    Hello from the UK! We are new to growing heirloom toms in our garden but the ones we have found the best, so far are the Black Krim and Ox Heart toms. Still plenty of choice out there.
    In regards to growing beastie toms, I love the idea and I already have a tomato formed from the double blossom which is doing well. Four years ago I grew a variety called Beef Master F1 and the tomato was 3 lbs in weight from a single flower!

    I clip out double blooms because they make rough tomatoes you can't peel. My dad likes single large slices for his sandwiches.

    Thanks for the video! In order to be an optimist, as I've not even managed to grow a one pounder yet (although I'm getting bigger varieties like Mortgage Lifter and Dr Wyche's), what did you use to build that tomato "hammock"? It looks like the material from the bloom isolation bags. (I don't see it on your website).

      I just cut a piece out of an old row cover material. but you can use anything. Stockings, an old t-shirt basically any material

    We used to get the mega-blooms and you can get large tomatoes from they will be ugly.,,, but since adding the horse manure from race horse stables we no longer get the mega blooms which is fine with me. I also develop worm castings which I share with my siblings[which they appreciate}. I havent yet grown a 3 lb tomato [2 lb 10 oz] my largest, but sis has had a 3.75 lb in her garden and has won a local contest in weight in back to back yrs. We grow the domingo which is currently worlds largest at #10. Most of the toms we grow are round and not miss shaped.

    How do I get some of your heirloom giant seeds. Also ... using compost and worm castings and chicken manure .... you shouldn't have to add much else. Watering: I'm growing in beach sand, so my garden retains almost zero moisture

    I do have another question. Is it possible to take multiple flowers and put them all right next to each other and let them form a large tomato? Even use flowers from two different kinds of tomatoes as long as they are flowering. If you are using those trash cans and flowers start on two plants, move the plants so they are right next to each other and then tie the vines so that the flowers are touching each other. Maybe even do 3 or 4 like that. Or even do multiple flowers from the same plant if the flowers can be moved so they are next to each other.

    • @Growyourheirlooms

      Unfortunately, that won't work. They have to be fused on the stem naturally in order to merge. However, you never know what our mad scientists will come up with in a lab some day :-)

    How many gallons do you water with? That's a bunch of media to saturate; I would imagine nothing less than 7.5 gallons. The reason I ask is because water conservation is an issue for me, thanks in advance!

    • @Growyourheirlooms

      It depends on the temps and the humidity. Here in So Oregon it gets hot. So I water at least 3 times per week when the temps hit 90

      Thank you for the speedy response and solid content! I'm at the edge of the Everglades, so I'm near 90° or over most of the year with stifling humidity to accompany the heat; I don't plant anything outside of cherries and a specific Roma after February until August. Eventually I want to grow a real monster but I've got some more scouting of the seasons to do before I should worry about which giant variety to get.

      I do have the Cherokee Purple growing in the north garden. Craig Lehoullier (the one who introduced the Cherokee purple) I believe claims to have produced mega blooms on his, but I have never had them do that. But they get large 1-2 lbs and they taste great

    Can you explain those bags on your tomatoes? I am guessing they are to keep the pollen in but it seems like the pollen would go through the holes in the bag. They look like mesh to me.
    PS I like your shirt.

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks. Yes, the bags are to prevent pollen cross. Tomato pollen for the most part is not wind blown. The pollen is carried by insects. But the fact that tomatoes are self pollinating, they don't easily cross. So as long as you keep insects from transferring pollen, they should not cross.

    • @DearHenryA

    All I can say is that you must be well off. I am a retired teacher living in Florida and sandy soil and three months of 100 + temperature. No way can we afford that much compost and worm castings. But thank you for this fantastic video. Learned a ton of the Heirloom I was growing. My wife bought the plant already in a little container and I transplanted it. Had no ideal about the double blooms, etc. We thought it had some kind of major problem. Big and ugly. I have to pick early here because is lots of pests. But will try those bags if I grow them again. I pick early and put in a brown paper bad with a banana. Works great at ripping.

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  Рік тому +1

      I have worm bins to collect the castings and I did a video on building a large 3 bay compost bin. I generate as much compost as I can. So no, I don't spend a lot of money on this stuff
