The epitome of French cinema. All about characters, dialog, performances, long takes, extended moments of silence, barely any musical score, inconclusive ending. The kind of film that is rarely made in Hollywood. Sandra is great but the young boy is truly amazing. And how did they shoot that scene with the dog on pills??
She was in Requiem. Fabulous actress. She won’t get it because the Oscars are so predictable and so political .

Same here. Everyone is in an uproar that Margot Robbie’s Oscar spot was taken by Sandra but there is no comparison in performances. I can wait to see her in Zone of Interest which will be opening here in Aus before the Oscars.

Milo Machado Graner deserves a Best Supporting Actor nomination. It was his character that drew me in. It was heartbreaking to watch.

Definitely my favorite original screenplay this year so far.
This is magnificent movie and in my opinion a psychological masterpiece. The depth and process of the screenplay is detailed, dimensional and quite complex. The Director, J Triet, stated that her intention was to have the main character played as she was innocent and to have the spectators draw their own conclusions. The languages are used as a mirror tool to create ambiguity between all the characters. The viewer (us) becomes the real juror and in my opinion the mother is innocent. The end of the story is perfectly concluded by the court prosecutor, "I implore the jurors to bear in mind, this story is extremely subjective".
I think she was to calm and out of rage to kill. I myself would kill if my husband played music this loud😅 But I did not see a slight rage in her during movie. And tbh I think the defense was right and the prosecutor did not had enough proof. But maybe I'm naive

AGREE, so much of what happens later is so extremely well yet gently set up in the first half... me I was riveted throughout this film and I SO enjoyed the incredibly realistic dialogue!! I was lucky enough to know absolutely nothing whatsoever about it when I saw it as I hadn't paid attention to Cannes this year. Here in France, the final 30min was much criticised as pointless though I really encourage everyone to think about that ending, for it too has an important though very quiet and gently made point!!

She's also been in Sibyl - a French movie that came out a couple of years ago with Virginie Efira. Off-ball comedy, also went to the New York Film Festival in 2020. Sandra Huller's movies don't usually make it to the US other than festivals, but that's it.
Thanks for an another excellent review, Brian. I love character-driven movies, and these days they are really hard to come by. I am looking forward to this movie.

I agree with much of what you have to say. This film grabbed me from the start and the last third was certainly a white knuckle ride. In the end, I still wasn’t sure if she was guilty or not but that confusion was surmounted by the fact that she and her son had found a way to move forward with their lives in a positive sense. That was certainly the ending I wanted. I agree that the child actor’s performance was amazing. He is a natural actor who already understands how to convey so much while apparently doing so little. It’s such a clever film on so many levels.
I'm chilean 🇨🇱 and I have great respect for the Oscars, as well as the Golden Globes. In fact, this year the chilean "The Eternal Memory" is nominated for best documentary, although it has tough competition with "20 Days in Mariupol", from Ukraine. However, I have to say it. It makes me very angry that the majority is betting on Emma Stone or Lily Gladstone for best leading actress, leaving aside a tremendous german 🇩🇪 actress, Sandra Hüller. 😖🤦🏻♂️ She seems to be from another planet. In "Zone of Interest" she is magnificent as Rudolph Hoess's wife. At times she even seems to be more nazi and genocidal than her husband. But in "Anatomy of a Fall," playing the widow suspected of having murdered her husband, she was simply superb. From another planet, beyond the fact that he had to speak in english and french.
Anyway, I know that mine is just the opinion of a south american addicted to good cinema. But it seems to me that SAG, Critics Choice and BAFTA have made the worst mistake this year in the leading actress category, and only because of pro-USA and UK marketing. Unfortunately, the Oscar will make the same mistake. Stone or Gladstone. But the BEST actress this season is Sandra Hüller.👊🏻

I had the same experience. I was watching it on rented stream so I stopped a few times and thought that it was dragging but if you give it time it builds and rewards the viewer. Great film!

Yes, AOAF is a masterpiece - of story telling, audience manipulation (in a good way) by the director and the screenwriter.
We've seen countless variations of this plot in TV and film but the director forces us in simple yet original cinematic techniques to fill in the story via personal interpretations, biases and perceptions to get to a version of truth. Cutting away visually from a horrific dramatization , panning to faces to see how evidence plays differently in the court of public opinion and one unreliable witness's testimony mouthing over another's alleged story. Elegantly simple cinematic genius.
Still, the film leaves us hanging on - story somewhat unresolved - much like real life. And like one character, you the audience are left on your own to make a choice.
Sandra huller also has another film zone of interest which is receiving acclaim. She may be nominated twice at the Oscars. Best lead actress and best supporting
She's not getting nominated for Zone of Interest. Be realistic.
THE YEAR OF HULLER FINALLY! She's been one of my favorite actresses since Requiem back in the day. And she doesn't act much, but we get one year with two performances from this and Zone of Interest. SHE BETTER GET A NOM! and i haven't seen it yet. ugh.

The dog did win the Palme Dog award at Cannes
There was a scene which i wont explain that made me think of Daniel the son being involved. Also at a point he mentions he touched the tape on the shed. AND in the beginning, at crucial moments and at the end you hear the click click click of snoops paws.
Saw it yesterday, impressive performances
It's good that some American reviewers understand what a "drama" is supposed to be and that a good film doesn't have to contain famous Hollywood actors in it or a high body count! 😂 Dramas like these are called 'slow burners', which generally culminate in a grand reveal at the end. I see this film as following the structure of a 3 act tragedy.
Such a great film. I really hope they win. It’s probably my favorite from last year. Absolutely great story and the courtroom drama would have you fuming. Was thinking about it days later.

Sandra was AMAZING in this!!!!!? The argument/ fight scene was incredible and the dog was incredible. Give this woman an Oscar nomination!!! She sort of reminded me of Vicky Krepps! She was so good!!!!!
Vicky Krepps is fine but Sandra Hüller is astonishing again and again. Just watch her first movie: Requiem. There are many other.

I feel like Antoine Reinartz is criminally overlooked in this movie. He was outstanding in the courtroom scenes and without him to bounce off of, a lot of those scenes don’t have their necessary dramatic weight and tension!

This was the 2nd movie I saw at TFF. I also really enjoyed it. I agree with Brian's comments. After the the couple fight in thw kitchen, I saw the movie so differently. An alternative title could be An Anatomy of a Marriage.

@5:09 lets be honest if this film was made in the USA with the criminal burden of proof, the court room scenes would have been moot as there was copious amounts of reasonable belief that she didn't commit the crime, it would be shocking if they even brought the case to trial.
Out of curiosity, did the movie have subtitles when you watched it? I saw it today and there was no subtitles and it made it difficult to follow along. Thank you.
You need to see in cinema to get the subtitles which are critical for the courtroom scenes. Any on the internet would not have subtitles.

@@sandrakenslow9540 You probably need to turn on the subtitles on Prime. TBH I think that would put subtitles on for the whole movie, even the English language parts, though. I suppose the movie is a bit out the norm, being in more than one language. I saw it in the cinema in the UK, at a surprise movie event, and the non-English parts were subtitled.

An absolutely great film. I'm not a cinephile but I caught it accidentally in my 20s, some 30 years sgo, on a random classic movies channel and was completely enthralled. Creative story, unique characters and outstanding performances delivered perfectly. I can only imagine the kind of reception it had when it was originally released. I'm sure it was the talk of the town.
The “You are not a Victim!” Monologue was Oscar on a Plate! She kills the whole movie but, that Monologue!!!
Can you still call it a Masterpiece if you dont love the first half?
Like many masterpieces, you later realise the importance of the set up in the first half when it starts to really pay off!!

I saw this film at tiff and it is definitely one of my faves of the year I have seen thus far, only behind Perfect Days. I love the structure of the film, the ambiguity, and ultimately how you as the viewer have to decide what you believe. It such an intelligent screenplay. Snoop deserved that Palme Dog. And I am rooting for Sandra Huller to win Best Actress for this year's Oscars. I can't see another performance rivalling hers (maybe Emma Stone but I have yet to see Poor Things).
Do you think Perfect Days will be nominated? Because it seems like everyone expected Japan to select Monster.
I absolutely do. Monster also would have been a very strong choice (I love Koreeda's work so much), but the simplicity of Perfect Days and delving into understanding the lead character really helps it shine. Another film to watch for regarding an International Feature nomination is Germany's submission which was also a fave of tiff, The Teachers' Lounge.
It was ok. I would have liked it better if there were no subtitles. It’s hard to understand when you only get half the information 😅 The little boy was absolutely incredible and he needs to win all the things!!

The last time a film was made about dissecting a murder case on detail was Anatomy of a Murder in 1959. These movies are usually a great watch because the story is told in reverse flashback in a logical manner but still keep you not guessing, but getting all your grey matter working in full steam.
Memento which is an adhoc recollection strictly kind of anatomy of a case, which also has its own merits, where the storyteller has to decide which jigsaw pieces to show the audience at a moment in time.
But frankly I like the story to be led by a courtroom drama makingrecounting the case even better. It adds dramatism to the narrative.
Also the Anatomy of a Murder is a US movie but I suspect is more on plot rather than character study. The razzmatazz on the movie was more on the storyline rather than the performance.
I prefer one that is more on character study just like Agatha Christie thrillers.
These European born actresses like Isabelle Hupert. work just like a imberjack when they perform in a film. It is like raw energy reminiscent of the wood cutters falling ogs in the thick of winter.
But if Michelle Yeoh EEAAO were to compete this year, she would still beat everyone. That film is unique and the role was mesmerising with a touch of the human element unlike Poor Things. Generally also courtroom dramas are not the Academy favourite gendres. Only To Kill A Mockingbird a semi-courtroom film won anything in the Oscars and the film was more on the small town ambience. Tjree examples of egregious snubs for wins are The Trial of the Chicago Seven. The Verdict and And Justice For All.
Possibly the best of the decade.

One doesn't need to explain a film to love a film. I had to sit in the cinema out of respect for my friend. Any film shouldn't take the time, energy, and even technical so much to deliver a ' normal' story.

I'd hate to think I have to watch this again since the first viewing was extremely disappointing. Nobody was likeable, Sandra is terrible, Daniel is a liar, and we never find out enough about any of these characters to even care. By the end I just wanted it to be over. Sure the fight scene was well acted but so? If Sandra killed him she got away with it but if he unalived himself then the big dent in his head makes no sense since they proved it wasn't from the fall and happened before he fell. Also the kid is blind but we are okay with him walking around outside in deep snow by himself. God awful humans

This movie suffers from being another needless gender swap. If you swapped the wife character with the husband character and changed the main characters lawyer to a woman you could literally have the exact same script and it would make much more sense. Oof

Is your comment based on your opinion that a woman isn't intelligent enough to kill her husband and get away with it but a man could? C'mon now, women are much more conniving than men and have watched way more true crime and forensic files shows; and the general public has a much more difficult time seeing a woman as a premeditated killer. If a gender was more likely to get away with murder, its definitely females.
