Yes I did this to my phlox and nothing fell over this year even though we live in a pretty windy area. Plus I stuck the prunings in wet soil and they all grew which is nice.

After Chelsea chopping, one can use some of those clipping for summer cuttings if you want too as they root very easily in a shady greenhouse

Thank you, John, David, and Teddy! Beautiful trees on display today! I planted a Satomi last year and I hope one day it will be as glorious as yours. Bit disappointed with the color this year, but maybe that will improve. If you could only bottle some of John's energy, I would be first in line. It is funny when he says he is lazy when he clearly is anything but.:) And, how lovely to have such rich soil. Thank you for sharing the joys of gardening in such an amazing locale with us. Not for the first time, it makes me wish my ancestors had stayed in Ireland. :)

I love dogwoods,here in Ontario I have the native one ( name ?) I would have loved the Cornus Kousa , but it’s a bit on the risky side.

perhaps not, but that's when you do it.
Chrysanthemums need the Chelsea Chop too

The big massive lie about the Chelsea chop is that you don't need to do it... People who have flopping plants simply either plant the wrong kind of plants for their soil, or just add too much organic matter or fertilizer to their garden. Most perennial flowers prefer lean soils. So they are smaller than what you think they should be, and they don't fall over. There are plenty of tall flowers that come from rich soils naturally and won't flop over. Just look for those. Or simply keep your soil lean, don't add compost or manure every year like too many people do. Wood chips every year is also very bad for that. And don't mix rich soil plants like eupatorium or astrantia or persicaria with lean soil plants like echinops, eryngium, agastache, poppies, salvias or perovskias... And as far as asters are concerned, well some are from poor soils, some are from rich soils. So if you do have a rich soil, and absolutely want poor soil plants, then yeah the Chelsea chop will be necessary. But that means you're growing weak plants that don't want this rich soil you're giving them. Not only they flop, but they're also much weaker to pests.
