Horizon is Kevin Costner's dream project.
Disastrous? I just went to see it today. The theater was full, not ONE empty seat.
Excellent movie. I love it.
I was one of only two people at my local theatre watching this dumpster fire, and we both hated it.
Seriously? I’m thinking about taking my pops to see this movie because it’s his birthday week. Is it an excellent movie or are you just saying that? Was the theater really packed out? I don’t want my dad and I to be disappointed
Can you explain why?I saw it today it was so confusing and the editing was all over the place with all the subpots constantly changing it was very jarring
@adammoreno4654 you and your dad with be extremely confused it's has over 10 plots lines rushed and constantly changing with no real character building
@@adammoreno4654
It is a three and a half hour long first episode of a series, in which the characters have very little time to be developed.
The last five minutes of the anticlimactic ending are a montage of the upcoming events of Chapter 2.
Yes it’s 3 hours long… so? Oppenheimer was 3 hours long.. The Batman was 3 hours long… Killers of the Flower Moon was 3 hours long.. all of a sudden it’s a problem now??
Personally, I think the biggest challenge this film has is structurally. It’s one film in four parts. Parts 1 and 2 are coming out this year, but there are still two more to film. Because it’s one big epic story, each entry is structured as segments of a larger one, it won’t be as clean as a series of sequels that have new stories to tell-I’ve read that Costner’s character doesn’t even appear until the second half of the first part. People might also not be aware of the four part structure, and be confused that it doesn’t end with “Chapter 2.” It’s gonna ask a lot of the audience from that perspective, and it being a Western, with an actor/director whose target audience is older, it just has several things working against it. I really want to watch it, but it’s not exactly on the radar of most people I don’t think.
To be fair, I’d guess the budget is technically divided between the first two films releasing this year, so each entry doesn’t need to make as much for the whole project to at least break even. That might help it.
Killers of the flower moon BOMBED at the box office so that's a terrible example
Batman and Oppenheimer had a built in dedicated audience: DC and Nolan fanboys. Killers flopped at the box. Costner hasn't been the Lead in a Big movie for over 25 years. There's probably a good reason for that.
Oppenheimer went by like a breeze, fantastic. Killers on the other hand was pretty boring & monotone.
100 million for both films. It's 50 million per film.
Stop trying to make it sound better 😂😂😂.
@@juanthompson8016he’s not “trying” to make it sound better, it IS better, it’s literally half the budget that’s reported. That makes a $10-$12 million opening not as nearly as bad. Not great, but not as nearly as bad.
@@thereelsociety6487 it's still a disaster. Marketing the film isn't free so you have to add that in
@@juanthompson8016 of course. But $50mil is better than double that!
Stop it. Go watch the trailers. Look at the size of the cast list. Even if everyone is working for minimum wage, you can't make a 3 hour long movie of that scope in the middle of Utah for $50 million. WB spent more than $50 million just airing all the Horizon TV commercials over the last 2 months.
Horizon did last a long time, it was over 3 hours long. The first settlement got raided by Indians , so then someone gets the idea to collect Indian scalps for profit.
Kevin Costner wasn't in the chapter 1 very much
i am 100% seeing this tomorrow... before quiet place for sure... love love westerns
Think they should have waited until Oscar season. It’s not a summer movie. Feels like the type of movie that would get some Oscar buzz that would be good for box office and for the sequels.
I didnt even hear about this movie till I saw this video. Then I saw the trailer. It looked pretty good. I dont know why John is confused about the plot. Its cowboys v native americans. This movie with Kevin Costner at the helm cant be that bad. but i blame the marketing because ive never heard about this movie till today.
Me personally I’m going to Horizon first then Quiet Place. But I’m a fan of Westerns! 🤠
Good or bad, I am still going to watch this movie.
After all, it’s a Western. One of the most influential genres in the history of films.
I agree.
They dont make it clear with Part 1 and 2?
It's in every Trailer stated plus on every poster! what more you can do?
It’s concerning that films like Horizon and Megalopolis have such a small chance to be seen as viable by Hollywood, what with the decline of theaters and shift toward people wanting to watch on small screens at home. Whether they end up masterpieces or as mediocrities or total failures, I’m happy they could be made at all. Filmmakers with genuine passion for their work and the theater going experience are being brutalized by the “content mill” of streaming, and need to supported more than ever.
But it's still the Movie BUSINESS. Spending $100 million to make Horizon and then another $50 mil to market it doesn't make Financial sense if it will only sell $20 mil worth of tickets.
@@courtneyvaldez7903 So true. I agree 100%.
@@daveclark8337 Perhaps. Then again, one never knows how films of this type will perform. I thought OPPENHEIMER was going to be a HUGH bomb and look what happened.
Im pretty sure it was said the $100 million budget is for both parts 1&2. The plot has been somewhat detailed in that it revolves around life after the Civil War and migration towards the American Southwest. I do hope to go see it maybe next week on my closest theater's discount night. I want to reward the risk being taken here.
Sorry John. I’m usually with you, but not here. The problem with the marketing of this film is not that the trailer doesn’t give us specifics about the movie, it’s that we hadn’t heard anything about its existence period. In other words: long term marketing was its failure, but that might be due to not having available funding for that kind of marketing. Actually, I feel most trailers tell us too much about a movie. The mystery of what this movie is about is what’s intriguing me to see it.
I agree with John. When you have a new franchise you need to clearly state the plot in the promotion, you need to hook people with a promise of an interesting premise or else you don't really give the audience a reason to see it. It's not about describing the entire plot, just how it starts, what the characters are trying to accomplish.
@@MatiZ815 Mystery can be just as potent a device as knowing. Doing both is a crowning achievement and these trailers do that. I have a problem with John because there is info about what the movie is about in the trailers. Lots of it. He just missed it. It’s just not spoon fed to us.
-It’s a western
-You learn Costner is starring in it
-You learn the main character is embarking on a dream and a quest
-You learn the dream and quest involves land
-You learn the name of that land he is seeking is called Horizon
-You learn it will be a difficult journey
-You learn that the main character is inviting others to join in his quest
-You learn that evil men will prevent the protagonists (several ) from achieving their dream and quest
-You learn the protagonists will be pursued, but you don’t know why which creates mystery and suspense.
-You sense from the trailer there’s a past connection of the land to the protagonist. Again creating mystery and interest.
These trailers not only tell you about the movie, they are also creating suspense by NOT telling you everything. An intelligent approach not only for one movie, but a franchise as well. Again, the problem I do have with the movie’s marketing is not enough was put out about the movie coming out and when. But that’s about not having enough marketing money available. I have no problem knowing what the movie is about. I know enough. I rarely go to movies anymore, but these trailers surprising make it tempting.
We’ll have to agree to disagree.
I think it has a lot to do with mostly shitty reviews and the fact that this movie is for old folks who remember the good old days of John Ford western film and they long since stop going to theaters.
@@stephennootens916 Oh. Really? The reviews have been bad? I’ve read a few, and the problem I’m hearing is because the movie contains multiple plots going on, the first installment of the film doesn’t really advance enough of any of those arcs to satisfy. If so, the problems with the film are editing and structure. A pity. This is the kind of movie the late, great Robert Altman could do in his sleep. Take a look at three of his masterpieces: NASHVILLE, SHORT CUTS, GOSFORD PARK and how he handles multiple stories. He was a genius at it. Oh, well. Hopefully, the movie can find a home and audience on streaming, where it probably should have first been released to begin with. Still, hats off to Costner for having the courage to attempt to think outside the box and be inventive. Something many film artist today are afraid to do.
The problem is the movie is 3 hours long and the new generation is not interested in supporting a western with a guy they don’t know. The movie is made for your parents basically. Gen Z does not know who Kevin Costner is😂. I’m still gonna watch it but I always knew it’s gonna fail.
Plus, its rated R, not showing in premium formats like IMAX or Dolby and the trailers strongly suggest it's just another version of the Yellowstone limited series spin off 1883. Having said that, I bought my ticket over a week ago and the only thing that concerns me is the 3 hour run time.
Lets not be to harsh but i see your point
It isn't made for their parents it was made for grandparents who saw the old westerns that John Ford made.
@@stephennootens916 I've heard the name John Forde time and time again when I've watched actors, critics and filmmakers talk about movies, but I don't know if I've ever seen a movie of his.
@@maximusaurelius9906 He's most notable films are stagecoach, grapes of wrath, the searchers, 3 godfathers, Fort Apache, and How green is my valley.
I already bought my ticket I don’t need to know what the movie is about.
Costner is 70 years old, as is much of his fan base now. Those folks probably don't even know what Fandango is. Maybe they'll all stroll up en mass at box office today. But with a 3 hour run time, they can only hit the matinees because the Early Bird special at Golden Corral is 4 pm.
FYI John, the $100 million dollar budget is for the 2 films combined. Granted, $50 million per pic is pretty steep but overall, this was/is a bad idea regardless that it's only a service distribution deal for WB.
It's baffling that they've greenlit and started production on Chapter 3 BEFORE Chapter 1 has come out!
They stopped production in May originally because Costner has been out doing promotions for Horizon 1. But last I heard, they aren't going to resume until August now. So maybe they are going to wait to see the box office results.
@@jeydoubleyew Perhaps the backend plan was releasing the later installments, as well as the entire epic as a streaming event.
COstner should do a sequel to "Dances with Wolves" and call it "Finding Two Socks" He will make a killing at the box office... 🤠
Just saw it,..Great movie!!!
What were smoking and or drinking?
I left the theater livid and confused.
I just saw it as well. I'm still working through my feelings about it.
Can you explain why?I saw it today it was so confusing and the editing was all over the place with all the subpots constantly changing it was very jarring
I’m sorry to hear that his saga is not doing well. I still want to see this saga.
You'll be wasting 3 hours of your life. Do not watch It. Kevin Costner does not deserve fans to watch this movie. After he let them down with yellowstone.
@@davidvillegas5885 I don’t care. I love Kevin Costner and me and my mom are anticipating this saga.
@@SG002Good. It got a standing ovation at Cannes. I hope you enjoy it.
@@michaelwallace2487 Thank you.
@@davidvillegas5885 I don't see how that's relevant at ALL
I got my Horizon tickets and am bringing 11 of my family members. 😂 can’t wait to see it. Love Oregon Trail type stories like 1883 and this is a continuation of that. Campea, the movie’s about manifest destiny and the American dream. Claiming the horizon.
Were you and your 11 family members confused and frustrated or did you guys actually like it?
If this movie makes between 20 and 30 million opening weekend, then it should end up being a hit. The first one costs 50 million to make, so it's very possible it could make its money back or at least break even
The way he left Yellowstone puts me off of this project -
But.. he mentiones what the movie is about in every trailer.🤠
The truth is that we HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT THIS MOVIE IS ABOUT! Other than Kevin Costner Western.
I looked at my local cinema that is showing it and for the whole weekend less than 30 tickets sold from 9 showings. There maybe some walk ins but I don’t have a good feeling about this. The runtime means there is gonna be less showings than normal plus westerns aren’t normally big draws. If it’s extremely lucky it might break through
I liked it but I really like most western films
Can you explain why?I saw it today it was so confusing and the editing was all over the place with all the subpots constantly changing it was very jarring
Watched an advanced screening on Monday night and loved it. Really looking forward to Chapter 2. I hear Chapter 3 (and possibly 4) are filming right now, so what happens to those if this flops. It feels like it should have been a 12 part streaming series, or had a limited release before going to streaming. An odd one for sure!
I think when said on Howard Stern that he wanted to direct and in Schindlers list kind of turned me off on him. Maybe that’s because that’s already been made, and I can’t see him in it. Also I have never really cared for his westerns. I did like Open Range, but that was because of Duvall
If its a good movie it has an chance over the long July4th weekend. Lots of folks with 4-day weekend and lookin for somethin to do. So could have a good second weekend if word of mouth gets out. I think there was a Disney movie couple years ago that pulled it over its second and third weekends after disappointing open; cant remember what year.
Horizon Chapter 1 is 3 hours and 1 minute long so that wont help.
SO? DANCES WITH WOLVES AND YELLOWSTONE EPISODE ONE WERE BOTH OVER THREE HOURS LONG.
Bro… Oppenheimer was 3 hours long and it made F YOU money lol miss me with that BS
@@aronscott9698yup....Barbie had NOTHING to do with that...
There’s 4 of them
Two this summer, and two next summer
sad to say, but Westerns aren't as popular as they used to been!
I mean, even if that that Alec Baldwin Movie Rust did come out, I really don't see that being well received by Critics or even Audiences!
Yuma 3:10 did very well.
@@dos3622 It did but that was made in 2007, which is almost 20 years ago. It is a different era now and I'm not sure Westerns have much appeal to people under 40. Horizon also had a 100 million dollar budget, which is crazy for a western with very niche appeal.
Let’s just call it Horizon World
No one cares about Kevin he hasn’t been box office in a very long time his recent popularity came from Yellowstone and because of his behavior he’s not on that anymore 😂
You don’t know what the hell you’re talking about
@@wesmcvay6078 everything I’m saying is facts and can be looked up lol why tf would I lie
Lets not forget most of the films he has made as a director bombed big time.
At this point its best to make a film cheap and with real backdrops out west. Then hope they make up the budget. People are just not interested anymore and have low attention spans. They'd rather see some ring ding animated film that has no real life value..
I hope he had a big post theatre deal with netflix or amazon
Wait a minute...is this the live version of Red Dead Redemption?
It’s a water world sequel?
Nice!!😀👌🙌
I feel like it may not be a big hit but it might be fine Kevin Costner is in the middle of shooting 3&4 at the moment
watching this Friday, along with Kinds of Kindness & A Quiet Place: Day One
BOTH Horizon movies COMBINED cost 100 million .So 50 million each
.
Perhaps if John could relate to America and the Westward Movement he would not be so sarcastic.
So this is basically the same saga Kevin Costner has done only in a different version people wanted to see him and Yellowstone now that that is completely done with for whatever reason he thinks that people want to see on Western just with him in a different time. With different character it just doesn’t work that way
The problem is no one knows this film is out cos it hasn’t been marketed at all
Going to flop hard, unfortunately. Critics hate it and then he is going against people who hate him for leaving Yellowstone.
ITs about the live action Oregon Trail. its pretty obvious by the trailer lol
Always felt like this was better suited to be a Netflix or tv miniseries. Releasing a four movie western series in theaters in 2024 just seemed like a disaster waiting to happen.
It's a surprise predator movie vs an old west cowboy. They will rake it in and laugh to the bank. Source: important people
Deepwater Horizon
Not even Avengers Infiniti war and Endgame came out a month apart why the heck would anyone think this is a good idea.
How did Hateful Eight perform?
156 million off a 44-62 million budget
Well THAT is Tarantino....
This whole project should have been on MAX or Prime or Netflix from day one.
Paramount+ would've been the natural landing spot but Kevin burned that bridge.
@@TLA79 Part of me feels that way. The other part, no. The film looks sprawling and epic and begs to be seen on the big screen.
Horizon It'll definitely flop with that title in the UK 😆
It's quite good and beautifully shot movie - watched it a couple of days ago, honestly didn't really noticed its 3h length. I've really enjoyed it and looking forward to Chapter 2 - it'll be sad if part 3 and 4 never see the light of day... If you like the genre of classical americana western, just go see it and support original filmmaking. And btw they DO clarify the part 2 is coming by showing a "coming next"-like montage at the end of the film, but I agree the overall marketing could be better.
Poor marketing, unpopular subject, not clearly informing people what's the plot about. I also think that calling it "Chapter 1" was a mistake. People love sequels but they don't like making commitments upfront. Seeing in the title that it's only a part one of a longer series will discourage people from giving it a chance. They were smart for not calling the first Dune or IT films "Part One".
i have not seen one trailer for this film. not great marketing?
I saw one in front of Dune.
Producers smh can't correlate investments with potential returns. This movie doesn't sound like something possibly making $250mil. There's quite a tendency what people watch at home, and what - in cinema.
I am not totally opposed to this movie. I am kind of interested. But I saw that it is over 3 hours. that makes it dead on arrival imo.
I’m really disappointed with the projections. As I have posted here before (during the CinemaCon livestream) I’ve been especially interested with these films as they were filmed in my backyard. I tried getting on the set for them but to no avail. They just filmed some scenes of part 3 recently here in St. George, Utah. I even met several of the crew during a filmmaking network event, including the DP. Costner has invested so much into this and my town to the point that he “is” building Territory Studios near the local airport. Seeing what’s happening I unfortunately can’t imagine the studio coming to fruition. I’m trying to get into the industry and that would’ve been a dream scenario for me.
Gonna be epic gonna go see all 4 Chapters of Horizon An American Saga when each is released into theatres.
I wont be able to see it opening weekend. But I will be able to see it July 4th weekend

Ouch! If you enjoyed the Yellowstone limited series spinoff 1883, you're sure to like this.
Shallow take from 1 min of research
It is reportedly a through back to the classic Westerns from the fifties.
Waterworld should've been a lesson.
I love Waterworld and the Postman. I'm also crazy, but still...
@maximusaurelius9906 but Waterworld bombed in the theater many of the same reasons. Most people would never know if it was a good movie.
@@quelnariemrah5624 That's only partially true. Remember there were numerous issues with shoot in Hawaii. Storms, destroyed sets, costly reshoots, battles with the director and editor in post production. And I think I saw that movie for free thanks to a theater employee 😜.

Another fictional take on what really happened to native Americans and the west.
You know how Tom Cruise basically had a preview for the last MI movie that essentially should the big stunt in the movie?
They should have made a preview like that, having Costner talking about his passion for the project and explain to the audience that it’s a four part series of films releasing within x amount of weeks of each other.
I see the same previews all the time after about the 3rd time the release date is committed to memory, because I know on that day I don’t have to see the preview anymore. Repetition works.
If each movie is 3 hours, I’ll pass.
Lastly, when in history has any director’s passion project been any good?
The trailers were really bad and different, I have no idea what the movie's about, it seems like a complete Costner cliched mess...
Do we have to spoon feed you?
The main reason I probably won't see it is that it's 3 hours long. I'm tired of really long films when I believe that most 2 hour films could easily be 2hr 30min or less. I know it's just preference but I want shorter films. I may see the new Quiet Place film because it's an hour and 45min long.
This review isn’t very good. The movie was great. If you don’t want to like it, just be honest and say so. How could you not now what this movie is about? This review is just sad
This isn't a review. By any definition of the word. They also never said it was a review. At what point do they speak about the quality of the movie? They've never even seen the movie. I recommend you look up the definition of the word "review" cause you legitimately don't know what it is.
Hope it fails epically as it cost us Yellowstone!
Yellowstone should have ended after season 2.
I will not be going to support Kevin Costner .After he let his fans down with yellowstone period.
Soooo... you're going to take persoal offense to a man making his own career decisions about his own life? Ummm... ok.
it wasnt even all Costners fault. Sheridan focus more on all the spin off shows than the pathetic Season five part one. literally nothing happened in all of those episodes than a multipart camping trip and a cowboy party where Jimmy's old gf got in a fight with his new gf. lame. very lame compared to previous seasons.

He didn’t want to leave Yellowstone.. it’s a cutthroat business and unfortunately the producers and the network and Taylor Sheridan forced his hand and it was time to move on.. the writing over the past two seasons was starting to get really stale IMO, still good but nothing like the first 3 seasons.
