Kobo Clara 2e (non-color) e-Reader is so light so I will use it Naked with a PopSocket instead

  • I will try to use the Kobo Clara 2e naked because it is so light, you almost doesn't feel it in your hand. So I will stop using the really great sleep cover for it that makes it a lot heavier. So instead I will use a popsocket on the back to get a better grip because the backside is quite slippery. And I said it again, it is much better to use the Kobo Clara 2e or the new Kobo Clara B&W if you only read B&W text ebooks. Because the Color Kaleido 3 display makes it a lot darker, dull and not as sharp. On a color e-reader you need to compensate with about 80% front light to have it enough bright to read on at home. But of course if you are planning to read coloured content like comics or coloured Mangas, then you should definitely buy the new Kobo Clara Color or even better the Kobo Libra Color. By the way, I also use a Popsocket on the Onyx Boox Palma for the same reason.

    If anyone wants to try holding the device like this to see if it works for them, you can "make" a free strap that weighs about a gram out of an ordinary household rubberband. (i think in the US they're marked #64). Just loop it onto one corner of the kobo, run it across the back of the device, and loop the other end onto the diametrically opposed corner. You're done.
    The two small loop ends will be visible from the front and you'll have two lines running across the back [\\]. I figured this out while waiting for my case to arrive and the rubberband is surprisingly comfortable to slip a finger or two under and provides more than enough hold to read the kobo fully upside down, like reading in bed.
    I have a case that I really like now and almost always still have a rubberband on the kobo or in my bag because of how much flexibility it offers. I haven't come across a case with a flip front cover that has a rear strap which can be used one handed upside down. So i just put the same rubberband across the bottom of my case to read upside down or to keep the cover closed if it's in a crowded bag or my bike panniers.
    I appreciate your videos and all the help you've provided the community. They're clear, concise, and showed me the entire workflow for calibre, kobo, and KOreader before i bought it so i could actually tell if the ecosystem did what i wanted. and of course the videos were also hugely helpful as a resource to follow when setting everything up. Thank you a hundred times!

      Sadly only reading progress works using KOReader on all devices. Highlights I manually collects from all devices.

    Clara 2e is out of stock in my country . May I know if Clara BW is an upgraded version to 2e , or should I wait for 2e restock ? Thanks

      Clara B&W is an upgraded 2E a bit sharper display and a bit faster.

    Hej...will you be doing reviews on the new Kobos? I'm not really interested in color if the ppi is low. But I do like the color highlighted feature but that's not really important to me. I wonder if the Clara bw screen being 35% faster (if that's correct) is noticeable.

      @@Femfemio unfortunately no. I just have two Clara 2es. the 2nd one I bought 2 weeks before they announced the Clara BW. Would have been nice to have tested the two to see if its enough of a speed upgrade.

    Have you tried the basic kobo cover? I'm wondering if the backside has magnets to keep it open. If not, is it possible to put magnets on without damaging the device somehow?

    • @svartling
      @svartling  3 дні тому +1

      No I haven’t tried the basic cover. And no it doesn’t have magnets to keep it open you just hold it folded on the back. And don’t mess with magnets yourself. Buy the sleep cover instead.

      @@svartling Very strange that such a basic feature as magnetic back is not included.
      I'm buying a Kobo next week but I chose to try a cheap used ereader before investing in a pricy one. I have the Bookeen Saga aka Adlibris frontlight 2.
      I love this ereader. It is a small 6 inch with page buttons on the side, light setting on the other side, page numbers, wifi, percentage countdowns, an internal gyroscope, a built in silicone case with magnetic back that stays open which is pleasant and nonslippery to hold. But it's also very slow and laggy with blurry letters.
      Why does this supposedly "bad" ereader have such good features that modern ereaders dont? Why do newer ereaders have an awkward shape with a wider side for the buttons like the Libra 2 instead of build in buttons on a clara 2e shape like this Bookeen? This is how the Bookeen looks like down below. Page turns on the right and light on the left. This ereader is perfect in so many ways, I just wish I could put Kobos latest tech into it. It's quite outdated but some features are so good and now gone on modern ereaders.

    Great! However, I would like to see the analysis of the Kobo Clara BW that will now be launched as well. I don't see a big difference for the Kobo Clara 2 E, even the new version (Clara BW) is slightly cheaper. Thanks.

    • @svartling
      @svartling  2 місяці тому +1

      The new kobo Clara B&W has carta 1300 instead of 1200 with the Clara 2E. That only means slightly better contrast and a tiny bit faster. So if you have a Clara 2E you definitely doesn’t need to upgrade

      A kindle is great if you want to use it for English books and the kindle store. A kobo is better if you want to use it with other languages. And kobo is more open so that you can install KOReader for example. And kobo also supports Adobe DRM so you can buy books from any store (except kindle store) and read them on the Kobo. I would recommend kobo if you live outside of US or UK

    I have a Kindle PW Signature edition, but today I went to check if Kobo was better in their devices. Sincerely, I hoped it was better or, at least, similar to Kindle, unfortunately they are not equal to the Signature version. It is better than Kindle PW (2018). Sage is the best size, but it more expensive in Europe than in the US. I will wait for Kindle Color versions in the futute. As for now, Kindle is my go-to e reader.

    • @svartling

      Do you really need color? It’s not a good experience if you only read black and white ebooks.

    • @aronherrera2876
      @aronherrera2876 2 місяці тому

      @@svartling I really need color in PDF scientific papers and some scientific ebooks. I agree that if you only read BW ebooks, color is not a game changer. I almost bought Sage the year it came out to the market platforms, but reviews about its battery made me change my mind. I was very excited about Kindle Scribe, but it's not waterproof. At this moment, Kobo color devices are not an option because of the price - quality balance. Nonetheless, the majority of my ebooks are purchased on Kobo US, as I can use them in other devices I have. Nice job, by the way.

    • @svartling
      @svartling  2 місяці тому +2

      @aronherrera2876 yeah but if you only read B&W ebooks its more than a game changer if you buy color e-reader. It’s a lot worse user experience then. Don’t buy color e-reader if you only read B&W content. It’s that simple.
