    To keep the original rules as much as possible: Make the snitch have a point per minute worth or something like that. The longer the game goes on, the more valuable it becomes. This way it isn't OP in the early game but it also keepss its worth in the the late game. And maybe instead of a fixed time limit, make the snitch slow down or grow shine brightly or anything else (you have magic, you can think of something) to make it gradually easier to catch the longer the game goes on.

      Im going to agree with StickX. It would make more sense to either have a set time limit on the game with an inverse point value associated with catching the snitch, or leaving it an open time-frame game but have the snitch still utilize an inverse point value while keeping the condition that catching it ends the game. That was catching the snitch early in the game would still have value, but catching it later in the game (when the difference of point values out match the value of the snitch alone).

      @Blixthand 8 років тому +10

      I see what you're getting at, but wouldn't it be better if the Snitch started at a set point, and then lots points for each minute? This would be OP in early game, but the snitch would be harder to catch and would make the teams invest more in their seeker, as the snitch would be worth like 250 points, but if the game goes on for like 2 hrs and the snitch is only worth 130 points and both teams probably has scored enough for 130 points not to be worth it anymore, you would move up your seekers to the forth chaser positon Ben mentioned, to score more goals. The snitch would still be cathable, and be easier to catch, but worth less, with a set "low" at something like 50 or 30. It could still be a gamechanger, depending on when you catch it and how much you are up/down by and it could be important for the total score for the seassons scoreboard, but it wouldn't be verry OP, unless you caught it after 10 min. Hmm, perhaps, perhaps not. it would be interesting if there were a computer program that let you play quidditch with changabe rules so that you could try your way to the best/most even

      I also would say opposite to point per minute increase, a point per minute decrease would be good too. the longer it takes to catch the less it is worth. that way teams would be encouraged to rally points in other ways as compared to slacking during the game and depending on catching the snitch. that and have a fixed match timr

    • @PipPanoma
      @PipPanoma 8 років тому +1

      What I'm trying to do is save as many original rules as possible while addressing the problems with the snitch: OP early game, useless late game and the possibility of endlessly long games if uncaught.
      The original rule I mainly want to keep is to have the capture of the snitch be the end of the match. That's why I want to make it easier to catch over time. Realistically it should never get as ridiculous as a flying lightbulb or it casually flying across the field. A good seeker should be able to capture it long before stuff like this happens.
      If it does turn out to become that ridiculous, then the reward for finally catching that damn snitch should be greater no?

    I always thought that it would be good for the snitch to *just* end the game and not do anything else, that way if your team is losing, the seeker's job becomes stopping the opposing seeker from catching the snitch and ending the game. Although this version would probably also require a time limit, and the snitch only being released at half time or something, up until which the seekers both play as chasers. This would also mean that if your team is losing, your seeker has the option of completely ignoring the snitch and the opposing seeker and playing as a fourth chaser to help get your team back up, before then looking for the snitch

    I think the Snitch should end the game, but be worth no points. That way, the teams' Seekers have to balance keeping the other team's Seeker away from the Snitch when their team's losing and catching it themselves when their team's winning. That way, it becomes less OP and more of a way of securing your team's victory before the other team can catch up. More strategy, you know.

      BUT if BOTH of the captains say to only catch it when their team is up on points then you will pretty much only have one team going for the snitch at once, which makes the game very short with the normal rules. And don't say defence because there are reasonable rules against that. For goodness sake, they're up on broomsticks flying VERY VERY HIGH IN THE AIR. Logic people.

    In Quidditch, You can't substitute out an injured player. Why? All sports allow a team to substitute out injured players. This rule means an unscrupulous team's Beaters can target the other team's Seeker to no end, injuring him so much that he can't play anymore, forcing the other team to forfeit. That's dangerous and extremely unsportsmanlike.

    • @thetoontastictoon1720

      Exactly. PLUS, Quidditch is EXTREMELY dangerous, you have a high risk of dying in it if a Bludger gets you and you plummet. Sure, Football is dangerous too, but it's VERY unlikely to die from it. Plus, they have helmets and pads. Why don't the Quidditch players get any protective padding?

    Quiddich is an incredibly aggressive sport
    1. There are two iron balls crusing at 40 mph and their only goal is to hit you.
    2. The players are playing at high altitudes basically sitting on a stick
    3. If two players crashed, with both of them going very fast their speed adds up and they are lucky if they survive
    4. There is a small gold ball somewhere going incredibly fast and you have no way to see it until it hits your eye
    5. A broom has sharp ends and the players have soft necks...
    And they start playing from the age of 11

    How to fix Quidditch:
    1)The snitch is worth 100 points and ends the game as long as it is in a 5 hour limit. If the game exceeds the time limit the team with the most points wins.
    2)Put a spell on the ground so people don't fall to their deaths.
    3)Have a broomstick speed limit so they are around the same speed.

    • @Siberius-
      @Siberius- 6 років тому +20

      But then you're relying so much on the other team not catching the snitch, or you just lose.. unless you have racked up a lead of over 100 points, which is insane.

    I thought I had a great new idea for the game, and I was typing it out while watching this...only to realize that most of it had already been suggested by Ben. (I know I'd seen this video before, but I didn't remember how much of my "new" idea matched with Ben's solution.)
    However, my idea does include one main difference. While I do want the Snitch to be worth a lot fewer points (25, 35, 45, 55), I'm not opposed the idea of the Snitch ending the game early when caught before the time runs out. That could keep the pressure on a Seeker to find it as soon as possible while their team still has the advantage. However, if that game-ending rule is to remain, I think the Snitch should not be released until the game has been going on for an hour or so.
    I'd hate getting hyped up to watch a big sports game and then have it end up taking only three minutes. Imagine if basketball had a rule that you could end the game at any time by making a shot from the opposite side of the court. (Now I'm having thoughts of a game-ending full court shot being worth 30 points...)

    I always thought quidditch was purposefully ridiculous, because that's how most people feel about sports in most schools. One or two people getting a lot of attention from tons of excited people over stuff that seems entirely arbitrary at best and completely nonsensical and potentially dangerous at worst. At least that's what football looked like to me in high school and college.

They both serve the purpose of being entertainment. Driving is dangerous, flying is dangerous. Idk what the point of this post is. Once the snitch gets caught, then there is like a ten minute timer left on the game starting whenever someone catches the snitch, so like if one team just has a god squad where all the players are insane and they’re crushing the other team, but the opposing team has a superb seeker, then team 1 has ample time to win because they’re the better overall team

    • @Devonimp
      @Devonimp 4 роки тому +13

      Really depends on a couple factors.
      (A) How good at snitchblocking is each seeker?
      (B) How good at snitchblocking is each teams beaters?
      (C) How good are each teams chasers at getting enough of a lead to make ending the game in their favor either way?
      (D) How good are each teams keepers at preventing the other team from getting that kind of a lead?
      So really, the whole team is a factor at determining how much of a priority actually catching the snitch is. Within the first stretch of the game, obviously the snitch is a game ender. So you want to prioritise your beaters on the opposing teams seeker to prevent an early upset. As the game drags on, the skill of each teams keepers and chasers determines how important each seeker is in their capacity of 'catching' vs 'disrupting', and depending on that, the priority of your beaters may likewise change.
      Depending how strong your chasers are, you may actually play a seeker who is better at blocking capture than making capture. I'd say this is what Ireland did but..... either Krum is SUPER OP in his role or Ireland didn't have that strong a seeker.
      The longer a game goes, the more strategy plays into it.
      Frankly, I feel beaters are an under-appreciated role on the team, since they have to be the most fluid in their tactics according to game momentum and opposing team skill.
      Seekers have the second most fluid role, as they need to be able to switch tactics from capture to interference depending on the performance of their chasers and keepers.
      Chasers and Keepers have the most set-in-stone roles, as regardless of whats going on their job remains the same. Get quaffle, put quaffle in opponents hoop, keep quaffle out of their hoop. Regardless of the momentum of the game, their actual role and focus doesn't change as much as seekers or beaters.
      I will agree the point value of the snitch capture should be dropped. I'd say 50 points and ending the game is a good margin, since that means you only need to be up 6 goals to render an opposing snitch capture moot, as opposed to 16. Tho we have seen progress in the magical world moves at a sloths pace, with much more emphasis put on tradition, so it is also quite likely that as the skill of players and quality of brooms improved, snitch captures became easier. I would guess that in the early, and even middling years of the sport a super fast snitch capture was probably far less likely.

    OK so here is how you fix Quidditch:
    1) Time limit of 3 hours.
    2) Snitch is worth 50 points, not 150, giving the chasers/goal scoring a much more important role.
    3) Catching the snitch DOES end the game. (This gives extra incentive to a seeker losing by more than 50 points to block and prevent the other seeker catching it until their chasers have caught up in goals)
    4) If the seeker gets taken out permanently by a bludger or any other reason, one of the chasers becomes the secondary seeker until the game ends. (This is a well-balanced disadvantage of having 2 chasers, a result of the seeker's lack of avoidance skill, or the opposition's excellent aim)
    5) I might have overlooked this somewhere, but put a slow-fall spell above the ground so people don't fall to their deaths (obvious?)
    6) Have multiple Butterbeer vendors in the crowd :D
    7) Disallow wands to be carried by players - no exceptions.
    8) Have anti-hex, anti-curse barriers around the stands so the audience can't cast any magic toward the players - and make it illegal to do so regardless.
    9) Auto-cast Impervious spell on all players, so one doesn't have visibility advantage over anyone else in poor weather.
    Feel free to add any amendments to this :)

      My contribution might be:
      Make height/altitude over twice (2.5x?) the length of the field "out of bounds" so that players remain relatively visible to spectators. (Only considered a penalty if the snitch is caught outside that boundary.)
      Also, stadium officials could make a magical, artificial "roof" for inclement weather. They might also magically broadcast certain shots on a viewscreen (like a huge tapestry) under the announcers' box across from the house/team seating and private boxes. (Or maybe that would be more for professional teams?)

  • @freshairkaboom8171
    @freshairkaboom8171 4 роки тому +10

    1. The snitch is worth 50 points.
    2. The snitch doesn't end the game.
    3. The game is played in periods of 45 minutes, and whoever has the most point after two periods, wins.
    The seekers can join the chasers after the snitch is caught.
    This is how me and my friends play IRL quidditch. Works great and it's super fun. The snitch is an actual person dressed in yellow, who has a tail with a golden ball on it that the seekers have to grab. The game is played on a football field by having brooms in between our legs at all times. We don't use the entire pitch, but the size varies, we just set up goal posts where it feels right. Penalties for dropping broom or not having it in between legs. The snitch is switched out every 5 minutes or so, so the snitch doesn't get too tired from running away from the seekers.
    Bludgers are soft balls like in dodgeball, and they're thrown. Any person can have any combination of chasers and beaters, the only rule is that whoever holds a bludger can only move three steps before throwing it. If you are hit, you have to stand still for 30 seconds.

    The broom differential makes me think that this is part of the competition as well. Sort of like in racing, where it’s not just about the skill of the driver but also the quality of the car itself. Also, polo on horseback is probably affected by the physical fitness of the horses being ridden in some fashion.
    Re the snitch winning the game almost always, I think the point is that the entire game is meant to be centered around the Seekers in a fundamental way. Basically the chasers are there to make sure that each team has something to force them to put in effort (like you can’t have your entire team look for the snitch since the other side would just run up the score on you and win that way). The chasers are basically fighting to keep the game locked in an effective tie until their seeker can catch the snitch.

    I think the snitch only makes the game unfair at Hogwarts and other school level Quidditch teams. Cause if you think about it, Hogwarts Quidditch is a lot like college football. The college teams consistently get less total points than NFL teams due to a lack of total practice time. So in Quidditch I think the same idea would apply; in professional games (like in goblet of fire) the point totals get so high that the snitch isn't as important. Which personally I think is quite fair. Now the broom thing is a completely separate issue...

    Speaking as someone who played soccer a lot as a child but not a lot else, I think Rowling coming up with a whole sport, including rules, an entire history, and whimsical details like being able to play for months at a time, is awesome and incredibly creative. And of course it doesn't have to make a lot of sense; Rowling herself has said that wizards are kind of stuck in strange customs and a lot of things they do don't make sense. For example, even British wizards use non-metric units like inches and ounces. If you think Americans are messed up for not switching to the metric system, think about how weird it must be to actually live in England and have to keep two different systems (one for Muggle interactions and one for wizarding interactions). Anyway, having a sport that makes no sense seems exactly like what wizards would do.

    I like your idea of having the seeker be a 4th chaser. You could turn your idea around and say the snitch doesnt award any points but ends the game.
    Giving a team thats behind the option to use 4 chasers against 3 while the winning team expends one of its chasers to catch the snitch to end the game before the opponents catch up.

      On the other hand, having all the skill in the world won't do you much good if your broom is cheap enough that you can't catch up with anyone else's souped-up brooms.
      Imagine that this was some kind of racing sport, something a bit more complex than go-in-a-circle-500-times but still where speed and maneuverability were important. Now imagine that players/teams who can afford good cars can drive the cutting-edge cars, while players/teams who _can't_ have to do with mildly souped-up sedans. How much do you think skill is going to matter? "Still some, but not as much as it should"?

If you prefer story telling focused on characters rather than action, with lots of thoughts and dialogue, and plenty of portion sized looks into very real methods of rationality (eg psychological phenomena, scientific methods), then HPMoR might be one of your favourite books, fanfic or not. i think that your snitch idea is good, but maybe have the snitch catchable multiple times? like, maybe decrease the amount of points its worth but make it that you can catch it any amount of times

  • @FXBX98
    @FXBX98 6 років тому +1

    Thats what I always thought, too. The Snitch makes it so the game isnt a team game anymore, but depends on the Seeker only, who isnt even fun to watch at all. Why not make it so the Seeker is a fourth chaser, and anyone can catch it if hes good enough, or better not like seperate classes of players, but everyone can do anything (exept the keeper), like in almost every modern ball sport. the rest should be left to the teams to tactition with (almount of bats, defence, offence, ...).
    Snitch needs the most changes. Maybe its like a 7th goal which you can hit with a quaffel, too (only catching it is better than shooting it i guess?). Its a ball sport so the main focus should be throwing balls, not raceing after something. Your primary goal should be to goal, not to hope for a random catch. Also I think the Snitch shouldnt give you just points, but give you some other advantage over the oponents, so it isnt like you play against a AI Snitch but actual Players (bot matches/Speedruns < Multiplayer). And also the time limit thing; the catch ending the game is stupid.
    Wouldnt it be fun advantage you get from a Snitch hit/catch would be the bludgers temporally/permanently switching aggro to the opponents only? Like if you hit the Snitch the bludgers dont hit you untill the next goal, and if someone catches it for the rest of the game. Other variants: hitting the Snitch disables it so you can catch it easier, and who ever has it gets joined by the bludgers; bludgers defend the snitch and help the catches team; ...
    Also I think for balance reasons the Snitch should be much faster so it gets cought in like 1/15 games. and hit like once every game.

  • @MrNintoku
    @MrNintoku 7 років тому +1

    I think a time limit for the release of the snitch would be good, making the early game focused more on the Beaters and Chasers and giving the Seeker the possibility of filling more than one role (extra chaser/beater/keeper). After about an hour the Snitch is released and the capture of the snitch gives the team the ability to grab an extra 150 points and end the game early before the time limit of four hours.

    How to fix quidditch:
    1. Time limit
    2. Snitch can’t fly out side the stadium
    3. Cushioning charm on the ground so people don’t die
    4. Do contests between schools
    5. Brooms have to be similar
    6. Binoculars should be given out to spectators
    7. After a foul, points are removed (how many depends on the foul)
    8. If someone falls a sub should go on
    9. Charms to stop any sabotage(I’m looking at you Quirrel)or creatures enter the pitch(Dementors)
    10. Make it available in the muggle world

    I feel like getting rid of the snitch is the best option, or making it worth far fewer points, like 50. Time limit is a good one, as well as dividing the game into four 40 minute quarters. Having the snitch catch not end the game, or if it is caught, releasing it so it can be caught again would make it more fair and exciting.

  • @MarlsbysDragons
    @MarlsbysDragons 8 років тому +72

    Ok guys, stand back. I wanna take a stab at this. *draws knife* Welcome to Maelstrym's Refined Rules of Quidditch, alternately known as Von Emring rules quidditch. There are either 5 or 6 balls, and a total of 9 goals per team. The balls are: the standard quaffle, 2-3 bludgers, the Golden Snitch, and the Silver Snitch. There are 5 goals to get the quaffle through, arranged in a square pattern with one in the middle. The forward goal, the one facing the center of the field, is the largest and is worth 3 points. The 2 on the sides are smaller, and are worth 5 points. The one in the back is smaller still and is worth 7. The goal in the middle is the smallest, and rotates slowly on a vertical axis. It's worth 13 points. Then you have the Bludging Gates, 4 goals, between the 3-pointer and 5-pointers in size, which rotate around the others vertically, looking like a wheel from the side, except spinning slowly around. There is enough space between the Bludging Gates and the goals for the goalkeeper and 1 other player to safely fly. The quaffle can only go through 1 goal, but can ricochet off them as much as it wants. Chasers are the only people allowed to move the quaffle, with the exceptions of the goalie (obviously), and the beaters, who can only strike it backwards, and only with their clubs. The beaters regular job is to defend the chasers from the bludgers, large, padded balls with a weak numbing spell which try to hunt them down. To this end, they are more heavily padded than the other players, and carry heavy wooden clubs. Next, you have the Seeker. They are the only people (other than the goalie) allowed to catch or chase after the Snitches, though the beaters can hit them if they come in range. The beaters aren't allowed to hunt them down though. The Seeker can act as a Chaser. And finally, you have the goalie. To explain their role, I must describe the field. Under my rules, it is a third as wide as it is long (length is whatever the standard Quidditch pitch is). The goalie is confined to a square a fifth of the length of the field (or a quarter, depending on the length, which I confess to not knowing). This square is centered around the goals, the largest of which is the same size as a typical Quidditch goal, with the smallest being a third. There are usually 4 chasers, plus the Seeker, and the goalie, who is allowed to act as chaser within their box, with 3-4 beaters, based on how many bludgers there are, 2 or 3. The quaffle must be thrown through the hoops, other than that you can transport it pretty much however you wish. The Golden Snitch is worth 52 points, and the capture of the Silver Snitch signals the end of the game. There are regulations set as to the speed, maneuvering, acceleration, strength, etc, of the brooms ridden, with different maximums set for every role. There are official regulations, but typically the teams will agree on what they are using beforehand. And that is the end of Maelstrym's Refined Rules of Quidditch. Please give me your thoughts and critiques (nicely, I would ask), and questions are very, very welcome. Feel free to point out holes in the rules situations that need specific rules, or entire areas I missed, it'll be fun coming up with new rules on the fly and pretending that I knew them the entire time.

So for sex it's looking at masculinity/femininity and sexuality within the series (and sexy HP fanfiction, no joke), death and its portrayal along with war and Christianity, then textuality looking at texts within the series comparing the book and movies then studies written about HP. But basically we're just having an in depth look at the series and over analyzing everything :P

      Yeah, but in a world where witches and wizards send letters to people that yell at their recipients, try to kill children for freeing their house-elf, only for said house-elf to throw them back with a blast of magic, force 14 year-olds to play in dangerous contests of magic they never even signed up to do, hire Gilderoy Lockhart PERIOD, force people to write lines with a quill that magically cuts their hand open to syphon the blood from it and use it to write said lines and, in the case of Quidditch, play a game with the morbid origin of hunting down a poor defenseless bird which is so frail that it dies upon being caught, A.K.A., the Snidget, the bird which was the precursor to the Snitch, despite the pure lack of ANY logic in these acts, I DOUBT they are gonna be logical and say, "Hey! That kid's broom only flies at 150 miles per hour while that other kids flies at 300! Make him use the same model!" I think with wizards, they're probably thinking "It adds to the excitement, suspense and drama!"

    Increase number of players allowed to 13,make pitches slightly bigger than a football pitch (not the American ones). This change alone allows managers to actually use real tactics instead of “you chase this, you chase that.”
    For example, they could play a 4-1-3-2 formation. The 4 would be the defenders, one for each hoop and then the spare one would be able to push farther up, help the midfielders, and plug any holes left by other defenders.
    The midfielders having 3 players means 2 could aid the forwards and the defenders, and the other could focus on defending the seeker.
    The forwards obviously just go and score in the other hoop, but bigger pitches, more defenders at the back and more midfielders allows more tactical opportunities such as going down the sides of the pitch, brute force through the middle or having defenders suddenly rush forward to score surprisingly
    The seeker would be behind the defenders and midfielders to start off with. This means they have 2 layers of defence, and have a great view of most of the pitch, keepers could keep and eye out for the snitch as well whilst the ball is down the other end
    Change to 2 balls. 4 is way too many lol. One is the snitch and the other is the main ball in play. That ball cannot be lobbed, kicked or thrown like an American football. They must be thrown similarly to a rugby ball, but may still be lobbed as long as the arm is under the waist whilst lobbed, otherwise it is fowl play and do a jump ball similar to basketball. This means you can’t cheese it by just chucking it everywhere, you actually have to do tactical and smart passes.
    Snitch doesn’t end the game. Every minute the snitch is in play means you will receive less points for catching it. Team with most points after 3 hours wins, if a draw, game must go into extra time before penalties.
    It’s very similar to football, since that’s my main sport but I tried my best to include aspects of other sports😂
    And obviously, that’s just one formation. With 13 available players there’s infinite possible tactical set ups and infinite combinations for managers to experiment.

    I think it adds a neat balance to the game, if you focus too much on just the snitch you can fall behind in score, and still not win. If you don't focus enough on the snitch you can lose too, there needs to be a balance between snitch focus and quaffle focus.
    Think about the defensive aspects of the game, both the Beaters and the opposing seeker need to make sure that the other team's seeker doesn't catch the snitch, but they also have to make sure the Chasers aren't scoring too much as well.

  • @getgudmedia7934
    @getgudmedia7934 5 років тому

    For a "Spec" Quiddich League, how about this:
    -Three one-hour periods of play.
    -Games start as usual with 3 chasers and a seeker. As standard ruling the seeker MAY NOT touch the Quaffle.
    -Upon Seeker A catching the snitch, Team A is awarded 50 points and Seeker A becomes allowed to touch the Quaffle (unlocked), effectively becoming the 4th chaser. The snitch is re-released.
    -If Seeker B catches the snitch next, Team B is awarded 50 points and Seeker A becomes locked (loses the ability to touch the Quaffle). Snitch is released.
    -Both chasers are once again locked till the snitch is caught.
    -An 'unlocked' seeker may still catch the snitch and garner another 50 points for their team. They remain 'unlocked'.
    This puts consistent relevance into both seeker duties and generic Quaffle scoring. Unlocked seekers provide great advantage for their team, so opposing seekers will be motivated to quickly reclaim the snitch to lock out the opposing seeker and 'zero-out' the bonus points gained by the initial catch. Sort of turns the snitch into a point-multiplier until the other team can negate it.

    This is my idea to fix quidditch, I call it Quitch:
    So, the first problem, I feel with quidditch is the scoring, it's artificially high for no reason. So instead of goals being 10 and the snitch being 150, we'll just make it 1 and 15.
    Focusing on the snitch for a bit, we'll say that catching it will still end the game, but the game will end anyways after four fifteen-minute periods. I'm also tempted to lower the snitch to 10 or 12 points instead of 15.
    As for the goals, well let's make it a bit more like basketball and say a normal goal is worth 2 points and a goal from far enough away is worth 3 points. Now, double digit leads, like in basketball won't be uncommon. Scoring goals is fast so a good set of chasers can build a lead that catching the snitch may not be able to overcome. Also, after a goal is scored the other team just gets the ball rather than having a face-off.
    Finally, since it's magic, why not make the bludgers be able to do something like freeze a chaser or make them really slow or what ever.
    Lastly, I'd change the quaffle so that it's more football (american) shaped.

    I have a completely different theory. When the game was originally created, broom technology was in its early days, thus it was exponentially harder to catch the snitch. Similar to how you said a game could last four days, this would let the teams rack up enough points to make the snitch matter, but not be an overpowering force. Though even in the early days of the sport, brooms were fast enough to have the game not last more than a day. The tradition of the sport has just continued to this day. The only thing necessary is to increase the speed of the snitch. As another point, I will discuss the broom problem. When the game was first created, wizards would enchant their own brooms making a broom advantage just be due to the skill of the rider, thus a fair advantage. This was a tradition which should be restored, this how to restore quidditch to its former glory.

    in plot terms, the snitch should end the game just to keep the plot going and having Harry win by himself. On the other hand, if I were to be playing that I would like it much better if catching the snitch gave points, rather that winning the game, and having a time limit. I feel this would make the game more fair.

    the thing about the snitch is that it brings strategy into the game if your team is ahead look for the snitch to end the game!
    your team is starting to lose? look for the snitch to catch the opposing team from behind!
    your team is badly loosing? make sure the opposing team is not getting the snitch! the catcher at this point could become a beater for his own team while they are loosing...
    so yea the snitch is the most important ball but it dosent mean that it is the sole importance if a team decides to all go looking for the snitch (wich was one strategy that i heard very often) the opposing team is free to score as many points as they so please making it easy for them to score 16 points before the opposing team finds it and get it to the seeker...
    as for the brooms i see it more like F1. in F1 they have the same model of cars but not the same engine the same fuel the same tires etc...
    quidditch is supose to be a game that can either demonstrate endurance or that can demonstrate the fast reflexes of your team depending on your teams strategy

    I use to play seeker on my muggle quidditch team back in uni and one thing i learned pretty quick is the potential to steal the game from one play doesn't produce wins at the other end of that equation, its just not that easy. For one, bludgers will come flying at you if you're too obvious about pursuing anything. Or reframed, if as a seeker you can have some bludgers come at you those pivitol moments almost always lead to goals and do so rapidly. Also, enemy seekers tend to linger in the same areas, to avoid the situation of the other guy/gal finding it and not being able to compete for it. With the other seeker a breath away you really gotta be alert for feints and sometimes seconds make a big difference and for me at least it was always my team that gave the cue to go for it. The comment on the fourth chaser is interesting because in muggle quidditch the keeper is a pretty offensive position, sometimes acting chaser-like and holding court near the center of the quidditch pitch. A relevent difference though is that its only worth 30 points for us but in my opinion I can totally understand why Krum caught it knowing they would lose. Goals score fast, really fast it takes like 30 seconds to get across the pitch and chuck the quaffle through a hope if no one stops you, and its not like you have a high chance of missing either like they seem to do in basketball and soccer. And if your team start trailing behind and you let it demoralize you a cascade of missteps is almost inevitable before long becoming irrevocable if not for the seeker.
    This is of course due to the volatility of the bludgers and fatigue and luck and the human factor, which makes sense for a game where you only have 3 players actively scoring out of 7, there's just a lot going on, the high-net seeker points balance that out and in a way are the only thing that make the game's otherwise questionable structure workable. The ideal point amount should be one amount that can't be easily offset by chaser momentum otherwise the game mechanic fails at its only job and becomes an almost irrelevent component while leaving the structural issues, of a game spiraling really out of hand when a team falls behind, unaddressed in the medium to long term. The amount has to be high enough to make victory achievable during successive "breakaways" as the defender while your chasers lose goal after goal to a formation they've never seen before until they come up with a way to counter and overcome it, at which point the dominant side would switch to another strategy or quickly find themselves confunded and wishing they had time turners. It all actually works quite well

    Ben, if you read Quidditch Through the Ages, then you would know that the reason the snitch awards 150 points is because in one of the first ever quidditch games, a bird called The Golden Snidget was sent out, Barberus Bragge being the one to suggest it, the smidgen was known for being able to fly at high speeds and for having amazing agility. Barberus Bragge said that whoever caught the snidget and killed it would receive 150 galleons (it was worth a lot more in 1269). But a woman (I forgot her name) came onto the pitch and, before the snidget was released, took off with it because she didnt want people to kill it. That woman however only saved one snidget's life, because from then on, snidgets had become a part of the sport. After a short while of this however, snidgets were starting to drop in numbers, so they stopped being used in quidditch. A wizard by the name of Bowman Wright (clearly a quidditch fan) invented 'The Golden Snitch' as he called his invention, which weighed exactly as much as a snidget did, and behaved exactly like a snidget did. And in memory of the 150 galleons that Bragge was promising to pay at that one quidditch match in 1269, the capture of the snitch would result in the seeker(that captured it)'s team receiving 150 points and it would end the game.
    Side note: That turned out way longer than I expected. Also, I'm not sure if I wrote it down in a way that people that haven't read Quidditch Through the Ages would understand.

    I think the Snitch should end the game instead of adding points, that way it gives the Seeker reason to work with the team instead of going on their own and just catching the Snitch and being the Hero Every Single Time.

    I love this video. I'm a huge sports fan and I'm getting into Harry Potter now, and I really love the scenes with the Quidditch games except the Seeker role. I would've loved to see Harry as a chaser or a keeper. Because in most team sports all the positions interact with each other to some extent. For example the QB is usually in sync with his receivers and linemen. But in Quidditch, everyone cooperates except the seeker. He's kinda left to his own devices messing around with a golden metal ball with wings! They're barely part of the team! They're like Punters except seekers can win you the game! #SnitchesBeCrazy

    I have a few thoughts.
    1. The school provides the same broom model for every student. If a student can afford it, they can buy one themselves. (I'm looking at you Malfoy.)
    2. The snitch only ends the game if the points when caught are drastically different. Hufflepuff seeker finds the snitch in a game of 200 to 500 vs Ravenclaw. It's near the time limit and Hufflepuff grabs the snitch. Even with the points, the team isn't going to catch up, so the game ends.
    3. Someone needs to enchant *something* the brooms, the ground, whatever, so no one falls off their brooms and breaks their neck. Or have a person hanging out like a ref who can use a levitation charm on the falling player.

    One thing that both your videos about Quidditch has forgotten to mention is that Quidditch is a sport that has existed for centuries and, like most things in the Wizarding world, probably hasn't changed much since its creation. So the rules that made sense then might not apply so well now, but Wizards are anchored in their ways...
    About Brooms: Do you think it makes sense brooms would have different "specialties" (one that super fast, one that you can ride with one hand, etc.)? If so, making all the players use the same brooms might not be an advantage at all. And players might prefer to use a broom they are comfortable with, rather than a shiny new one every year.
    Also, in the books, except right before a match or for qualifications, no team except Griffindor's is mentioned as practicing... And I do think it's Oliver Wood's doing. (and maybe McGonagall) Didn't he become a professional player after he left Hogwarts? We know the team was good when Charlie Weasley played, but maybe this whole "training every week" was Wood's obsession over Quidditch, encouraged by McGonagall who wanted her house team to win?
    Additionally, regarding the 6-matches-in-a-season, are you forgetting that Hogwarts is located in the north, maybe in Scotland? It would get freezing cold and stay cold for quite a while, so it might not be realistic to have a match every month... and Mrs Pomfrey would strongly object to students playing for potentially hours in the cold.
    Food for thoughts. (Slytherin for the win!)

    • @cynthiadesgagne8548

      Also, maybe it's only the point difference that counts. That way, extra-long matches were both teams scored plenty of goals wouldn't matter so much to the ranking. And it would explain why Krum caught the Snitch so early rather than waiting for the point difference to grow (still, what kind of pro would loose the game on purpose?)

    In the wizarding middle ages there were these things called 'snigits' they're still around to day but are a protected spicies (Which you would know if you've read quidditch through the ages)
    But back then in the middle ages golden snitches were very common in the north east of the UK and 'snidget hunting' was popular.
    Quidditch was around but called Cauditch and the players had different titles.
    Once a cheif in the ministry of magic brought a snidgit into a Cauditch match and told the players that whoever caught it would be given 150 galleons (Over 1 million galleons now) and thats why 150 points is now given to the team who's seeker catches the snitch. The game is then ended because snidgets being used in quidditch prompted the end of mistreating snidgets and prompted their becoming of a protected speicies almost a century later from that Cuaditch match.

    1.) The first snitch worth 50 pts and a low speed
    2.)The second snitch worth 50 pts and a medium speed
    3.)The third snitch worth 50 pts and a high speed
    This leaves both sides to have an equal chance of winning the game fairly. Ps I would also like if there were 4 seekers too

    Another option for the brooms would be for who rides which broom to be chosen at random. Or maybe just which team gets which brooms, since that would add an element of strategy in who you choose to ride which broom. The school brooms would doubtless have their quirks and failings, just like a wizards' chess set that's been played many times - Ron was said to have an advantage because he knew how to handle his troops in his old chess set. And no one would be too eager for there to be one stand-out broom. Sure, you can buy a Firebolt, but it might be the *other* team's Seeker riding it!
