Vandals cut cables of newly installed EV charging stations in Sumner

- Frayed wires are what's left at one of the newest electric vehicle charging stations in Pierce County, which was brought to town with the help of a local business owner.
Dave Radcliffe, longtime business owner and CEO of The Old Cannery, said its the second time the charging cords have been cut in the span of a few months.
Genius, who could have predicted that unsecured stations would be vandalized!!!!!!
Hooda thunk it…
This is why we can’t have nice things.
Hm. Vandals? I think you meant "thieves". Why use the wrong word to describe the theft of copper?
that struck me too. weird.
Destruction of property is vandalism.
@@andynewman835 If the thieves had cut the cables and left them there on the ground, I would agree that would just be vandalism. In this case, the thieves cut the cables and stole them, presumably to sell. See the difference? Destruction for the sake of destruction vs destruction in furtherance of a theft.
@@GroverParkGeorge a theft obviously occurred. Destruction of property also occurred. There are no restrictions in job titles as you can be a thief AND a vandal. If the perpetrator had taken the entire charge port, vandalism likely would be off the table as a criminal charge. Since the cable was cut, leaving the charge port inoperable, but still in place, needing repair, that’s vandalism.
@@andynewman835 Cool. Two charges. One for damaging the charger and one for stealing the copper.
Everyone should bring their own cable
The cables cost a lot of money and you would need one that works for every charging station
@@RavensFan634 more profits for Tesla! Now all manufacturers will use NACS
@@RavensFan634 Create an industry wide standard with minimum requirements. Many new EVs already come with at home chargers anyway.
It seems like vandalism and theft against a public utility would be very alarming..
Indeed. There are people that have targeted power transfer stations.....I would like the law to be able to enact SEVERE penalties.
😢
Thank you for reporting!!
It never occurred to people that the copper thieves will target them?
They are not stealing them for the copper
They think they can plug their car in at home for free . LoL 😂
You don’t need cameras Build them like a gas station with drinks snacks coffee restrooms attendants hire some people.
Catch and release all day
can't wait for robocops to become reality
What a modern crazy clash of worlds. The desperate vs. the Tesla owners.
The thieves aren't desperate, they're just too lazy to get a job.
These are not Tesla chargers… do your research…
@@billmM3605Or hooked on meth/fentanyl
Either lazy, addicted or coal rollers.
@@samsnead2770 I think you're right about the two, but coal rollers would have just cut them and left them.
My solution: the wires should be held in a cabinet which should only be openable if you pay first.
need mesh covered cables to prevent theft bunch of idiots

Need to change to "Bring your own cable" charging stations.
Welcome to Washington 😂
Hear me out put a camera right on the charger wow so mind blown
Perp wears a mask, is on property 30 seconds, law enforcement response…🥱
Doesn’t matter, can’t get charged for a crime in the US
@@lloyd.8272 true that
- W-H-Y no cameras !!! B nice to find the storage place
Easy solution; Make the cable removable like a hose & charge $500 for each person to have their own or include it in the vehicle package [=
Tweekers need copper.
Keep your gasoline vehicles.
Chargers should only have outlets so people can plug their own cable
And when you leave your car unattended to go for a over price coffee someone snaps the connection off at the car end, kicking it till it snaps and causing hundreds of dollars of damage to the car and most likely leaving the car unable to charge.
@@lloyd.8272 that can happen right now anyway? What's your point? Wireless charging? 😂
Make the cables out of lithium ion batteries. No one would dare cut them.
Vandals? These are thieves!
Criminals “you banning catalytic converters sales? Now we’ll take the charging cables for cash”
They are not vandals, they are thieves, stealing copper. What did they think would happen when you leave a copper wire in plain sight?
Wealth disparity strikes again. The movie Emily the Criminal kinda lays this out pretty well. If you have not seen it just watch the scene where Aubrey plaza's character is offered an unpaid internship explains the gist of the movie. I work an honest job for a living and am angered by property crime as much as the next person but there are some people who are recognizing the game is rigged, and are refusing to play. I feel like that's why there is organized property crime and theft rings and nobody can have anything nice. .
"Going to provide more security.... have a more direct camera..."
Why? The police won't do anything about it as far as I can tell. There is no proper punishment for this crime.
Society is so focused on ensuring the "punishment fits the crime" with zero regard for if the punishment is going to make people think twice about committing the crime in the first place.
We could’ve avoided this, and Elon’s special plug BS, by making the cable the driver’s responsibility and putting a universal plug on every charging station instead.
Like they do in Europe.
Better yet, quit building and selling BEVs until the grid can handle the capacity needed.
@@wampuscat7433 I get your point, but just like with any new technology, if it's not introduced in everyday life, it will be practically impossible for the world to create a system to handle that.
no cameras
This is yet another result of going soft on crime in this state.
I see no copper looks like tin cable.
LOL it doesnt even look like copper. Its just funny
guess they finally found out the cables are made of copper wiring... move along.
Even if the thief is caught, they'll likely get a slap on the wrist. Too many repeat offenders out there who should be kept behind bars. With that said, charging stations should be setup more like gas stations with a convenience store. That would discourage theft and encourage more to get an EV. Charging stations now are often on the edge of parking lots and not safe, especially at night.
Given the felonious nature of people, I can see when drivers are required to provide their own cables for a charge....
Imagine the gas pump has precious metals. It’s time to use non precious metals for these EV chargers, which is not going to happen.
The recycling places are in on it.
Too bad they were able to hit it twice....... Maybe next time they will turn into Doc. Brown from Back to the Future when the clock tower gets hit by lightning.
wtf
Sad really that people hate EVs and don't want them so they vandalize charging stations.
Yes.....if that is the case. I immediately jump to anti-EV jerks when I hear about vandalized EV chargers.
Maybe they just really hate EVs and EV drivers, which is totally understandable.
😂
The charging stations should have been designed like an outlet. The cords should have been made to come out of the cars, then you wouldn't have this problem, or cord length issues. But hey, I'm a black guy, and we don't take good ideas around here because.....diversity bad eh?
so the EV engineers would respond by pointing out that weight savings = range = sales.... that's why Tesla's don't come with a spare tire. Also, ICE cars don't carry a hose with them either.
@@Rashnak66 Bro, the weight of the cord is negligible. And no, ICE cars don't carry gas nozzles because cutting them at the pump (which is usually at a manned station) would be quite hazardous to your health.
how much would the cord cost .. would add a couple of grand on an already overpriced unwanted product.@@Neimfeltrite
@@Neimfeltrite There is also almost no value in gas pump hoses for thieves
@@verygoodbrother My comment was about charging stating cords not gas pump hoses.
Only gonna get worse.
Easy money for bad guys
Green energy at work here.
I have a Tesla.
I charge at home overnight.
And instead of sitting at those chargers when I need power cause I drove too far. I carry a Honda generator in the back. Pull off somewhere in a secluded area. Eat a sandwich playing with my phone and charge my vehicle there.
How many gallons of gas does it take to charge your Ev?
@dougwebb917 It takes a good many but like I said, I had to actually go back and buy a gas car after I got rid of my gas car when I bought the Tesla. It goes through tires in 20000 miles. They talk about it's no cleaner. Than a gas car because a lot of the power comes from coal-fired power plants. So I thought I was being green and it turned out. I wasn't as green as I was when I had a gas car alone as far as recycling. It's way greener to recycle a gas car that it is a Tesla. That's supposed to be real nasty like I said, I was hung out to dry when I bought that Thing
@@AB-tc8lxI love my EV. Love not going to the gas station.
@@samsnead2770 I did too Until I had to get tires at only 20000 miles and my 200 mile range. Just 2 years later is now only slightly above 50.
