This was the most empty interview I’ve ever heard. Ludacris was being so careful to not have an opinion on anything. He said NOTHING during this entire interview other than “It’s a beautiful thing.” 100 times.
SnapeInvader for people who don’t understand our culture ludacris is huge for hip hop community. He was one of the guys who help make gritty hip hop mainstream. And he’s in a lot of decent movies. Anybody from hip hop culture would understand why he’s necessary.
That’s what I love about Patrice he always took most the accountability for his lack of crossing over big. Can’t remember if it was a single interview or a compilation but once I saw his point of view and him admit he fucked up some big opportunities because he was unwilling to compromise but also admitted some of it was just self sabotage because he just couldn’t see himself doing certain stuff, but said it without looking down on people that do it.

This why I love Patrice, you get honesty. This is why I love O&A more....they constantly gave a platform to honesty. You don't always have to agree with some comics honesty, but that you got to hear it, in it's unfiltered form, is the true genius. No wonder when you hear Bill Burr in 2020 on the MMPodcast talk about O&A like a death in the family....you get where he's coming from.
I was defending Luda in my head until Patrice explained what he did. Luda made the luda side of him the character and the actor side the real side. That's just him participating in playing the "im not a who i am" game. It sucks that the system is set up where he has to take away identity from himself
The truth is that the Luda persona was never real. It was a character from the beginning. Chris luva luva became Luda. Chris was never in his life gangsta. He has said it himself. Luda was a way for him to get more aggressive.
Luda’s publicist gave him an earful after he started making headlines regarding Oprah and Bill. That type of “beef” only work in your favor if its in the music. Diss tracks sell albums, controversial interviews only help sell advertising dollars.
Ludacris: "I'm Ludacris the rapper, but i'm also Chris Bridges and I want the people to get to know that Chris Bridges and Ludacris are different" Patrice: "Still nigga"
It's like this, 50 cent came up losing his mother and struggling to live and make it into something. His rap means something. Ludacris just admitted to playing a character in movies. The character from his rap. He said he is playing a role, then pitched his movie in a very salesman way. I get it
Fear of losing their actual lives is what keeps em in check, fuck the money. Money comes, money goes, but when you make blood oaths, your whole family is in on the deal.
Great men are never realized in their time. Patrice was far more important than those men that he thought were more important. Long after those men are forgotten, patrice's work will live on.
i love this interview. Katt Williams shined some light on this exact instance again. Patrice trying to get Ludacris to break character and make him uncomfortable.
I think Luda didn't really get the show. He was expecting the show to be more like terrestrial radio show. Opie and Anthony leans towards being more like an podcast.
Patrice is venting about what has kept my race back in America. We've abandoned the 'each one, teach one' philosophy. The rich ones amongst us ain't mentoring the others below.
This conversation Patrice is having, which is cracking open the shell, is what makes him my GOAT, he had this "on to something " mindset about Hollywood Relationships Money and I would listen to every second n listen AGAIN. Miss you Big Brotha.
Just this picture. Real raw personality juxtoposed with glittering jewelry, photoshoot-dead eyes, and facial hair so over-styled that it looks painted on.
Jim understood this better than anyone . they could have gotten luda to say more if they would have asked some of those questions LATER in the interview. The guys messed up a lil. They should have made him comfortable with them first...THEN ASK. Or talk about their own experiences first THEN ask him about it. Luda was safe...but they launched right into the shit without taking into account that he is at WORK and doesn't know their angle.
I deff agree with the first two comments but they were just lookin for a genuine response and didn’t get a single one. Means one of two things, either he’s not well spoken or he didn’t know the feel of the show/ trust the show
I was only familiar with Patrice due to other comedians honoring him. Even though this wasn’t comedic I loved every bit of this. I also like how his colleagues listened and respected his opinions.
Just would like to point out the excellent video description written by the uploader. "Patrice O'Neal, Jim Norton and Ludacris in studio, along with a phoner from Edward Norton. A lighthearted conversation quickly takes a turn for the worse when Patrice realizes Ludacris is now a product of media training and would rather play it safe than be himself and have an interesting interview with any sort of substance. When Ludacris makes it clear he is in studio to promote himself and his current work, and not to answer questions about things that have happened in the past, Patrice puts his head down in disgust and loses interest. To his credit, Patrice rejoins the conversation and repeatedly tries his best to crack jokes to help Ludacris understand the vibe of the show and to make him more comfortable before realizing he's too far gone and it is what it is. After the interview, Patrice and Jimmy have a great debate about the interview and an even deeper discussion about Hollywood when the interview and post-interview discussion causes Patrice to have a moment of realization where he feels he is irrelevant."
The point patrice was making was he wants us as black people to have a culture amongst one another so if Chris Rock says something about anybody, a Sean Penn would either feel like he has to watch his mouth or get pushback for speaking. Unfortunately, we probably won't get it because too many people are not upright and functional
Holy shit Patrice was one of a kind. If you see this comment please watch the video to the end. Patrice had a mind like and iron hammer. Truly brilliant and introspective. Patrice would have been the greatest podcaster if he had lived. I’m sorry he missed this time by a few years. God must have wanted the message in this way.
*Eastside Low Bottoms sh*t !* _Tappin' in from South Central LA_ *8/17/22* I understand Norton's argument on Ludacris possibly being a little apprehensive during the interview. The same way he brought it back around towards the end when he compared the conversation with Ed Norton about seeing obama as a Black man to 'only racists see obama as a Black man'. This is still one of my favorite clips to listen to. Rest easy Big Homie. 🙏🏾 We're listening. 🤜🏾💥🤛🏾

O&A: "Man, did you notice Ludacris tighten up when we got in into that shit about money?" Patrice: "So you guys are millionaires, right" O&A: "Excuse us while we sidestep your question"
Rich white people value being able to pretend to be an "average Joe" above most things once they get their money. I am so tired of these rich assholes pretending to know what it's like to be an average ass person, while living a lifestyle that totally contradicts it. Funny thing is that Ludacris came from radio in Atlanta. He was very animated as Chris lova lova so to hear him acting like that on here is crazy. Similar to how Markie Mark acts like he was never a rapper.
“He got fired because he was black asking for whiteness” - Patrice
Patrice was brilliant in explaining things in such a unique, funny way.
Luda having been in radio prior to rapping has him sounding like he's reading from a script😂
In today's world, Patrice would be so incredibly valuable, which is not to say he wasn't valuable when he was here. With race relations the way they are now, it will take somebody so honest, and genuine as Patrice to break down the walls. Rest in peace, man.

This is a perfect encapsulation of WHY Patrice was never bigger. He spelled it out himself.

He’s almost always awful, but I do appreciate that he’ll dig in on stars/guests when they deserve it.
There’s so much Patrice material it’s crazy. I didn’t get into Patrice until 2013 when I saw Elephant and found him on O and A and I STILL come across material I haven’t heard before
Opie had his place, he helped keep the show moving and going to the phones led to a lot of great convos. Guy just got super self conscious about his role and turned bitter against everyone
Edward Norton was a total pro on the phone. He was very compelling and made everyone in the room feel like he valued their opinion.
I'd argue that Norton did roughly the same thing Luda did. Kept it accessible to all audiences. Didn't make enemies. I don't know why you trashed Luda but praised Norton.
@Nick West OP made a comment trashing Luda. I don't know how you don't see it, for me it appears right near this comment.
Patrice hated Norton, he talks about what an Ahole Norton was on the set of one movie in Which Patrice had a bit part as a club doorman. I guess this here broadcast was prior to that
@@virginnocencethe difference is, Luda was being a phony, Norton was being sincere. Ludacris came in with a phony attitude. Talking about how everything is a “beautiful thing” and saying Ludacris is a character and he wants to be called Chris Bridges. If you can’t see what a phony he was, then you are blind.
Patrice only needed to hold out until now. he would have been huge on podcasts and youtube like joe organ. he would have found his audience and made his millions being true to himself.
I completely agree. I tel people all the time that if Patrice was still alive he’d be the best comic going and a force for free speech

Damn, this turned into a really great, philosophical/sociological conversation. I love when that happened on O&A, especially with the great Patrice O'Neal being the heart and soul steering it. I feel shitty that I never realized when he was still alive what a not only hilarious/talented, but just real-as-hell, intelligent, captivating, deeply thoughtful person he was. The world can never have enough people like him. You are missed, Patrice. Now more than ever we need your kind of unflinching honesty, critical thought, soul, self-reflection and fearlessness in the face of our corrupt-as-hell system and spiritually bankrupt culture.
Tuan Jim amen to that! Lol beautifully spoken!!!!

The legend Patrice calling from way back what Kat Williams is saying today here.! Brilliant.! RIP🙏❤️
Patrice: maybe if I get 100 mill I might be quiet
Jim: we are pulling our money together
Even Patrice agreed this was not the time or place to critique Luda's agenda
No wonder he tells the boys he doesn't want to talk about the past. Katt is the realest
Luda sold his ass to Hollywood, what do you expect? Oprah owns him too
Patrice got that Freddy Krueger nose.
If Luda diss Oprah and Bill on this show the show wins and Luda loses......there u have it
Luda’s publicist gave him an earful after he started making headlines regarding Oprah and Bill. That type of “beef” only work in your favor if its in the music. Diss tracks sell albums, controversial interviews only help sell advertising dollars.

no, it's called othering others

Conor Doyle for real, that hit me too
The part about Sean Penn was so fucking true.
Patrice called back then, and Katt Williams is calling it out now.
Really knows the soul of the shows dynamic
The point patrice was making was he wants us as black people to have a culture amongst one another so if Chris Rock says something about anybody, a Sean Penn would either feel like he has to watch his mouth or get pushback for speaking.
Unfortunately, we probably won't get it because too many people are not upright and functional
