Welcome to ‘Karnataka Vaggeya Vahini’ - a series presenting compositions of senior Vaggeyakaras of Karnataka. This week, in the fifth episode of the series, we bring you a vocal concert by ‘Sangeetha Kalaratna’ Vidwan S Shankar.
Vid. S Shankar has rendered the compositions of ‘Sangeetha Kalanidhi’ Mysuru K Vasudevacharya, as a tribute to the legendary Vaggeyakara, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of his demise. Mysuru K Vasudevacharya has composed more than 200 krithis and many of them are immensely popular even today among musicians as well as rasikas.
Vid. S Shankar is a popular and senior vocalist from Bengaluru, with an impressive style, known for his adherence to purity of tradition and scholarship. He was trained in music by Vidushis Rajamma Shastry (his mother), Nagarathna Bai and Vallabham Kalyana Sundaram. Shankar is an ‘A Top’ grade artist of AIR and Doordarshan and has performed in national programmes as well as Radio Sangeetha Sammelans.

This is one of the best kutcheris in this year of 2021. Sri S Shankar has shown his mastery over any kriti of the great Vasudevachar. Everyone of the songs he presented with total devotion and perfection ably supported by the threesome pakkom -- all new to me -- from Karnataka. The concluding Khamash song "Eranaa sami ... Sarasadalanayana Krishnaa ... Najivadharudu ..." I tell you coming from the Khamash man Vasudevachar this tops among all Khamash songs. It brought tears to my eyes ... I listened over 7 times just to perpetuate my unbridled joy overcome with emtions this Eranaa saami song. May Sri Shankar be blessed with the best of health. That applies to the humble no-show-off pakkom vidwans including the young ganjira man with that thickest flock of sheen black hair with the cutest facial demeanor that is a joy to watch. All nononsense serious yet humble personas from the foursome. If and when Sri Shankar tours California I will be right there cheering for him. How a "LIVE" kutcheri of his would enhance my rasika experiences even in the septuagenarian segment of my life in the dusk!
