  • I was sent this Hornby Duchess of Sutherland by Alan. He bought it on ebay as a bit of a punt but it was a non runner and needed work so he asked if I'd have a look at it.

    This is where a 3D Resin printer would be handy it should be able to copy those gears with a bit of practice. 😅

      I second that. 3D printing is something i would like to progress with.

    They don't make Chinesium as good as they used to when I were a lad. Not your fault Bill!

    Hi Bill, you should be able to remove the cracked gear from the double gear, there are pressed on the shaft separately, the you will just need to find one that has the same number of teeth, you can use gears that are axles, and on step down gears. I've done this alot and it works for me.

    The model that stopped me buying 'new' (as a kid) was the tender drive 'Duchess of Sutherland ' back in 1978.
    It was horrible, the cab number was printed badly on one side, the clips holding the tender body on got broke, so it would come off when picked up !
    Worst of all, the electrical connection between engine and tender was bent and never worked properly.
    So it got put in a cupboard for 20 years and when it 'emerged' again the main driving wheels crumbled to dust ! ! !
    I paid good money to make them right again but I don't think it's ever ran again !
    Such a shame as it was a beautiful model and was light years ahead of the old 'Tri-ang' models that came before it !

    Hi Bill, last option would be to strip back running gear until it rolls nicely and use it as a dummy for double heading. Cheers Peter from downunder.

    I’ve got an old wheelset for a Duchess and also the double gear from a Merchant Navy which I think is the same. The double gear is the older brass one. You are welcome to them if you want.

    I really do wish Hornby would sell that double gear as a spare part separately. It's plastic against a brass worm drive. I've seen some nicer models online that go for quite a discount because that gear has bitten the dust

    Always enjoyable; never accept defeat; hopefully the wheel set and the double drive gear will appear in a short time. A truely lovely surprise at the end credits… excellent finishing touch to an enjoyable and informative video. Many thanks agian from Marc in Leighton Buzzard

    The gear on the drive wheel is usually identical to the small gear on part X8849 or similar. Plenty of X8859s around DCC where the large gear has cracked but the smaller one is ok. Just remove the wheel from the axle and replace the gear. Once the quartering is done it's good to go.

    I cannot believe that a double gear that thick could split. It must be quality of the plastic used by Hornby or the Chinese manufacturer that made it for them. I have had many problems with older Bachmann and Life-Like gears with an absence of any available parts. Sometimes you just need to stop and admit that it can't be fixed at this time. Great video, Jersey Bill

    A valiant attempt. The lack of spares for Hornby is staggering! I suspect it's due to cost cutting?

    Not defeat, just a setback. I've got a few models that require new gears and they just don't exist. I've even considered Re-gearing it. These things are sent to try us. It's a complete capital B when we meet those problems, if anyone can, you can. Great video.

    Splitting gears is an increasingly common issue with Hornby steamers.. spares? Nope.
    Had to turn away a chap the other day who had a Schools with a split gear. Couldn’t take the repair on when the part doesn’t exist anymore.

    OOBill NEVER fails 👍
    It’s just a matter of time before the follow up video. In the worst case maybe you couid find a suitable worm gear and brass axle cog. Back in the day such things were readily available… (1980’s - showing my age here!) from companies like Alain Gibson.

    Hi try the gears, idler and final drive for the Royal Scot. They seem to be available and the driving wheels are of a similar size. Many Hornby parts are interchangeable such as motors. The worm is just a one tooth gear and they only difference can be the pitch. Hornby's are mostly the same.

    I'm sure someone could 3D print a replacement gear for you if you gave them the broken one as a template.
    I'd offer to do it for you but my being in Australia is a bit of a problem.
    If anyone is thinking of making new gears FDM seems to last much better than resin gears. I think the resin is too brittle. Cheers!

    Bill, try looking at other gears from fowler tanks, royal scots etc, as they maybe different part numbers but they are the same piece! This is true of the gear from a J94, its exactly the same as the terrier but they have different X numbers!

    • @oobill
      @oobill  8 днів тому +1

      @@oobill It would be really useful to work up a list of parts which appear in different models and which have different Hornby part numbers but are actually the same item. Tri-ang had a unified spares list, but Hornby have forgotten how. But then Tri-ang made gears to last fifty years!

  • @brianparker2478
    @brianparker2478 8 днів тому

    Why would Hornby spend a few pounds on spares ,when if your loco packs up ,you buy a new one ? I believe that the same spare has multipal reference numbers and I have had several successes with alternative part numbers.I may be wrong but I think that the double gear has two variants? I had a Q6 which after a few months the motor burnt out.The model had been detailed and weathered so invalidating any warranty,but a search in Google came up with an article on replacement motor,had to reduce shaft length and transfer worm gear and still runs today after many years.Thanks for a great channel OOBill,always enjoyable and educational.

    At worst it could become an unpowered dummy model, as illustrated by the coda to your video. Well done for highlighting the problems. I fear for my versions of the same. I will also have a look in my small spares' tin.

    Hi Bill, spares for Hornby are very hard to get. You should be here in the land OZ. Seems no one here keeps Hornby spares. I was able to source spares from Peters Spares. The only problem now is postage since leaving Brexit the postage now is around £40 we’re as it was only a few pounds.

    Oh dear, such a shame for a nice looking loco in that very attractive LMS livery. I have a feeling that it isn't the end though, at least I hope not. We are so used to watching your successes but not everything works out first time. I hope it doesn't end up at the scrap yard. 🤔
