  • A few weeks on from purchasing cactus plants I'm getting round to repotting THEM (SLOWLY!) , TAKING OFF SOIL, SEPARATING 2 CACTUS IN EACH POT SPLITTING THE ROOTS TO FREE INDIVIDUAL PLANTS ON 3 DIFFERENT CACTUS PLANTS BECAUSE THEY ARE NEEDING MORE GROWING ROOM.
    ALL REPOTTED IN THIS VIDEO TO MAKE 6 SEPARATE CACTUS.
    IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER AND HAVE NEVER POTTED A CACTUS AND NEED TO KNOW HOW SINCE YOU BOUGHT YOUR PLANT THIS IS A GOOD VIDEO FOR YOU.
    HOPE YOU ENJOY.

      Yea, speaking of such; I had an Astro Ornatum, LOVED it so much!!! Was such a beautiful specimen! But I was brand new to growing cacti, and it rotted from the inside during winter. I had no idea, as it looked normal. Then I checked it, and it was completely hollow. I was so bummed. But looking back, I wasn't experienced enough yet to check the roots good for mealy bugs, like you did here on your Capricornes (which are both beauties), and it cost me my beautiful Ornatum. We learn as we go, and we learn from each other.

      @@risenfromyoutubesashesagai6302 yes, Asyrophytum can appear all healthy looking but the rot inside can take upto many months to show any signs that there is something wrong, that happened to some of mine and it affects all growers from beginners to experienced. They are a hard and firm cactus so they can hide lots of awful goings on inside them until its too late.
      I'm always very wary now of buying larger specimens.
      Thank you for watching.
      And the Astrophytum thar are featured in this video are still with me and doing well so far.

    So many useful tips Claire. When I’m next in B&Q I will be sure to look for the ones that need repotting and give them a good home.

      Most of these cactus in the terracotta pots are out of stock now in my local B&Q so I will have to wait until they are back in season again but they are good value because I now reuse the clay pots and drill drainage holes in them to use as actual plant pots 😆 I expect they will be stocking up on the Christmas cactus Plants soon 👍

    Nice cacti collection you've got there! I thought the spiky one might have been a saguaro at first, because the young ones are usually very spiky, but it's highly unlikely they're being cultivated in nurseries.

      Yes good thinking on that one, they are protected in their natural habitats aswell.
      I'm still trying to work out its I. D.
      Don't know why but the columnar cactus, to me, always seem a bit more challenging to identify.

    Very good tips & enjoyed watching!! However, I have seen this time & time again & it just really disappoints me every time I see others do it. BUT- y'all r SO ROUGH when tearing the roots off it's old soil! I can practically Hear the "Rip, Riiiip, Riiiiiiip!!!!" Each stroke of ur tool! And again, I see many others do this, u r definitely not the only one but I just think so often people forget that these ARE living creatures and their roots, even Cacti, have very delicate roots and all the banging around the pan and dropping the poor babies,,,and then people wonder why their plants suffer root rot pretty soon after transplanting!!! When we go Rip, Riiiip, Riiiip'ing their roots to shreds, it takes A lot for them to heal, thus needing a Heck of Alot more time to heal B4 giving them a watering after a transplant such as the one above. I Do hope u waited AT LEAST 3,4,5 weeks before watering him again or if in 6-12 months u notice ur babies have Rot, then u know why now.
    PS. it's prolly also a good idea to give ur cacti a good watering 2-4 days Prior to when u know u r going to transplant them so that when u go go Riiiiiip'ing at them, at least maybe the soil won't be so bone dry, thus causing the roots to tear so much more easier then if they r softened a bit with a drink B4 hand. But seriously, Thanks for ur video :)

      These particular cactus plants were very compacted in less than ideal potting mix, usually sold this way in small pots.
      They would not survive long term left that way, especially intertwined at the roots, they wouldn't develop well left like that.
      Freeing them up unfortunately will break roots. Leaving them as they were and sticking it into a new pot still wouldn't suffice.
      Personally from my perspective they have a better chance at survival from being separated and roots fully dealt with, enabling new roots to grow.
      Much of the longer tussles of roots on the ends are dried or dessicated and break off anyway.
      Bushes, trees, bedding plants, garden plants, shrubs, etc, in fact any kind of plant will be cut back, branches chopped, roots split, cut back etc to be maintained.
      I adopt this root pruning with alot of my cactus, especially when they are new purchases, as much of my plants are bought in that awful potting mix or peat mix without much else added to it, that desperately needs removing because eventually the cactus roots would not develop well which would cause early death.
      The Astrophytum shown in this video are still with me now and haven't rotted.
      I appreciate your comment and thoughts.
      👍🏻😊🌵

    I've been watching your videos tonight for the first time. Been enjoying them all and learning as well. Some of your potting mixture ingredients I never heard of. I do know enough to not use store bought cactus mix without adding something for better drainage. I just bought a bag of miracle grow cactus soil and found a small stream and dug out very small rocks and pebbles to mix with the cactus soil. Haven't had time to use it but what are your thoughts if you have the time. Thank you for your videos.

    • @CactusCove
      @CactusCove  3 роки тому +3

      Depending what part of the world you are located will have a huge impact on what the basis of your potting mix will be predominantly made up of...here in the UK its high humidity very changeable weather rains alot etc...
      So high drainage fast drying in between watering a cactus is needed for me.
      If you're in arid,dry desert for example,then you need a more water retentive mix because cactus in pots in this environment dry too fast and need to be able to access the water before it's gone too fast or dried away before they make use of it.
      So just balance out what you need based on your growing environment, growing INDOORS means a slight shift in increased waterings to account for the slight warmer temperature particularly in summer, and I ventilate the room with open windows, a fan moving the air around etc.
      With regards to using the MIRACLE GROW...
      I would not personally use this at all, if its the one labelled for cactus plants, its still not much good, but thats just my opinion.
      I don't use peat or any loam based soils anyway because its my preference.
      So using any peat in cactus potting mixes is not good long term, its okay for tiny seedlings etc.
      But if you're definitely using the miracle grow then you are very right to add other components because using it as it is will just rot and kill your cactus...it needs so much more drainage adding to it...so yes adding the rocks and pebbles from a stream is good idea!
      Try not to use smooth round stones, ones with rough irregular surfaces are better.
      Do thoroughly inspect the miracle grow before using as these packaged soils can get contaminated already with bugs and pests and if possible I would sterilise it before using. 😊🌵🌼🌵

      😁 I originally potted those 4 cactus on 3rd April (in first part of video) so didn't have the Kyodama, pumice, etc at that point.😆
      But also, I have 2 massive sacks of my fine grade moler Clay granules they seem to last forever! So an awful lot to use up so trying to now incorporate the moler clay with my potting mixes to help 'use it up' 🤭☺️
      I do have an upcoming video repotting my larger astrophytum using my new substrates actually which I filmed the other day (the potting mix does include a ratio of the moler clay! 🤦‍♀️🤫) I'm still playing around with the ratios! 🤯

    How long would you reccomend seperating the one that had the spider eggs? Just got one from homebase that had them :( thanks in advance!

    • @CactusCove
      @CactusCove  3 роки тому

      As long as its definitely spider eggs (and not Mealy bugs) it will be okay to put your cactus with other plants.
      I removed all the soil in this video(as much as you can really to get rid of those eggs) and if you want to, rinse off the roots in water and preferably allow them to dry out first, but make sure you repot into dry potting Mix and dont give any water ... If you are repotting cactus in Mid September (in the UK) then cactus will be soon entering its dormant phase by end of September early October, so your cactus wont need any water until end of next March early April depending on weather/temperature, so do be very careful with your cactus because it won't be putting on much more growth now and won't recover as well from the root disturbance at this time of year.
      Remember, the damage caused to roots from taking away old soil needs to heal and dry before repotting into dry potting Mix, otherwise rotting of your cactus can happen.
      If you are successful, next spring it will resume growth and grow more roots, if it concentrates on growing roots it might not choose to flower, but it can still go into flower, cactus are surprising! Good luck and thank you for watching and for your comment. 👍🤞😊🌵
      The spiders don't really harm the cactus its just unsightly😆

    decaying cinnamon slurry, doesn't sound to good after a few moths :x Regards

    • @CactusCove
      @CactusCove  Рік тому

      It wouldn't turn into slurry, it's part of the soil mix and as watered settles in.
      After all its an organic component just like many that make up potting mixes, except I didn't mix it into my soil so it looked more dramatic.
      If you take watering a cactus into consideration, and it's drying out fully in between waterings then there shouldn't be chance for slurry, and just watering and roots at they grow and move the cinnamon powder would be dispersed gradually and mix in more.
      It's just something I do sometimes for the roots to sit on for a time to heal.
      Thank you for your comment. 😊

    Hi got mine from BnQ as well..I've just repotted mine in a multi purpose compost and perlite...is this going to be a problem?? Thanks..

    • @CactusCove
      @CactusCove  4 роки тому +2

      Hello, Thank you for watching my video and for your comment.
      Hopefully you took off the old soil first (as shown in my video)?
      Well I would never say you have done a wrong thing in choosing multi purpose compost because you have also mixed in Perlite too which is better than just using the compost on its own.
      Without knowing what type of compost I can only take a guess that it contains some Peat, but correct me if I'm wrong ☺️. Okay... In short term:
      1) your cactus will be okay for now as long as its not in a massive pot; using a pot with a minimum of a 1cm space around cactus will be sufficient and that it can contain the root ball without too much soil space is good.
      2) Make sure (if you have to use Perlite for whatever reason) you don't add too much compared to the soil... too much Perlite is lethal because the granules themselves hold onto moisture surprisingly via its outer surface area and if particles are too close together (because too much used) it creates too much surface water retention in the gaps in between as they touch therefore turning your soil mixture into too soggy and rot your cactus... I. E. Roots grow before it commences the top growth after transplanting so it will rot before it can even show any top growth.
      I WOULD SUGGEST YOU ADD SOME GRIT OR GRAVEL TO YOUR MIX ASWELL, AT LEAST A MINIMUM GRAIN SIZE OF 5MM, THIS WILL DEFINITELY IMPROVE YOUR CHOSEN SOIL MIX and use less Perlite or omit it altogether. Because you are using compost add a handful of sand too if it does not already contain any, it will just help break up the mixture a bit more.
      So ultimately with the soil mix you are using (compost & Perlite) make sure you do not overwater because it will naturally hold onto water for longer so will take longer to dry ensure its bone dry throughout before next water and you just might get away with that mix of soil for a while but in the long term consider switching your substrate to a more suitable one, there are many substrates you can use and it depends where you are too because in the UK its wet/high humidity so need a very free draining mix.
      Hope this helps.
      😉😁🌵🌵🌞

    Question when you buy them from the store could you bare root them to repot ?

    • @CactusCove
      @CactusCove  4 роки тому +1

      Hello,
      This video shows how I repot cactus Plants bought from hight Street stores/shops etc (approximately at 4:00 minutes into the video I actually bare root the first cactus).
      So yes I do bare root EVERY cactus plant I buy from shops because most of the time you will find the soil mix the cactus are growing in, is just basic compost, especially peat based and the roots are often root bound (which is usually the case in the very small pots which I buy a lot of😁) and are so compacted they need freeing up before you repot them.
      Thank you for your comment and for watching. 👍🌵🌞

    hi i have a question!i bought a t with 3 cactuses.A big one,a smaller one and a baby(like rlly small)iS Is it necesarry to sepparate them?

    • @CactusCove
      @CactusCove  3 роки тому

      No you don't need to separate them at all... Its your preference entirely, if you enjoy them as a clump or trio of 3 individually rooted cactus in one pot then leave them, if you want to have them as individual cactus then have a go at separating them and have fun 🤗 If they all look like they are happy and thriving together then that's good, if one or 2 look like they would do better with their own space then I would probably look to separating them. Remember it's now the dormant season for Cactus so they won't need watering really until next Spring so if you do get the roots wet then dry them off with paper towel/towel before potting into as dry potting mix as you can, because they won't be actively growing much now so you don't want the cactus to suffer root rot.
