😄😄 Thanks, so happy to know you enjoyed the episode. It's very, very hard for people here. Even middle class people in smart houses are struggling to feed their families because of loss of income. The local governments have been helping, but after all this time Sabah threw up its hands and said there's no more money. 🥺 Communities have been helping each other, which has been heart-warming to see. 🙏 Liz
In my situations (First World poor and Third World) I could always distinguish the hungry from the larcenous but I still gave what little I had to the latter as well in most cases. Emphasize most cases. You are ambassadors of good will! Loved the photo sequence, more please and -- pretty please -- still the camera (right verb?), linger an extra second or two for our pondering pleasure. Kudos again!
I think you handled this as most of us have. Pilferage is a fact of life in the cruising community. You are spot on when you tell of the desperation of the unfortunate. We once had a very desperate fisherman try to take a dive mask I had drying on deck. Our ferocious crew ( two chihuahuas) alerted us . I spoke with the man from deck who told me he was a fisherman, but explained that with a mask he could dive for lobster and make more money to buy rice for his family. I thought it credible, so I gave him my old mask, for which he was very grateful. He returned the next day with two lobsters in trade for the mask. What many of your fans don’t understand is the abject poverty you encounter when you are very remote. We once had a father paddle 6nm from a village after he heard we gave the local school kids toothbrushes and toothpaste from a generous dentist in the States. He brought two kids not old enough for school. The fans also don’t seem to understand the concept of there not being any authorities for law enforcement. Another fact is the lack of standing of cruising yachts. You do not have the same rights as citizens nor the rights you enjoyed in your home country. If one were to detain a National, even to take him to authorities, one might be arrested for kidnapping. Not a pleasant predicament to defend a hat. So, well done. I watch from time to time to bring back memories of our 10 years at sea and our beautiful ketch. We are now preparing for much shorter passages with our grandkids but certainly no less adventurous memories for them.
You clearly understand what it means to be a cruiser and the kind of poverty we can experience. In the Anambas islands they particularly like old dive masks. We carry batches of pencils specifically to give to children. Talking of lobsters, a small boat of raggedy fishermen in Eritrea came to us at anchor. They held up two lobsters for which we traded old clothes, food and cigarettes. The next day they went past dressed in my old t-shirts with smiles as big as houses. 😁♥️ Liz.
Laundry? I used to just put my things in a net bag and dangle them over the side for a few hours, either slow sailing or at anchor. The motion of the boat gives them a good wash and then a fresh water rinse. However I wanted to commend you for your kindness to that young man. The world could do with a lot more people like you. Many thanks for another great video.

Excellent video guys ! Not much one can do if you have a hart but offer the poor lad some nourishment ! Maybe explain that mischief is fround apon and not nice !
I would have done the same. It looked as though he really needed some oars. Living in New Guinea as a kid i remember watching the local guys making a set of oars in just minutes with a sharp tomahawk from a suitably sized tree branch. There villagers had a communal attitude to ownership so when someone took something they weren’t stealing it, they were “using” it. If things sat around too long unused, they were “redistributed”. So every time we went on holidays to Australia our little dinghy, usually tied up at Ela Beach, would go missing so Dad would drive around the villages till he found it and collect it. It’s different there now, but that is how it was in the 50’s.
There are many ways to live, that's one big thing we've learned since untying the lines in 2006. And that shared community lifestyle is very appealing. So many places we've been where property boundaries don't exist and the idea of 'trespassing' is incomprehensible. 😄 Liz

Hello, I am here to just congratulate you guys and your positiveness. Me and the Wife recently found your channel and automatically fall in love. I am 47 years old Portuguese old and my wife is Brasilian in her early 60’s and been living in the UK for the last 20 years. I always had a passion for the sea and boats, and last year have decided to go and follow my dream ( just hope the wife let’s me.. :) :) ) . Well we are now in the process of selling our house and looking for a boat. So why this long message!!! Well like I said we recently found your channel and we are looking at all your Older videos and found one we’re you talk about the 5 reasons to not have a UA-cam channel. There you mention all the nasty comments that sometimes people leave in the comments. Just ignore them. You guys are brilliant, although there are lots of editing comparing to others were they are actors you are one of the most natural people have seen. Remember that the people that leave those nasty comments are just people with envy and probably with little or no achievements in their life. So please keep being yourself’s and carry on doing what it is a brilliant job…… Hope you check this, and hopefully we will cross paths one day. Cheers :)
What a lovely comment to read, thank you! We're delighted to welcome you on board our channel. 👌 Our age difference is similar to yours and your wife. 😊 Liz x
How will I wake up the morning of the issue? What did I/we do the day/night before? Because that may likely influence our/my reaction! I think you guys handled it exceptionally well.
It appears he's up the creek without a paddle, people will go to extremes when the going get's tough and all other options are exhausted, on another note, weather there looks very nice, here it's getting cold and wet ( normal conditions ) and happy Halloween, have a spooky good time.
Desperate also means dangerous. I trust you both are very deft at dealing with locals of this sort with as much sailing experience you have all over the world. Be as vigilant as you can to 'help' while maintaining your safety. From my own experience in feeding desperate locals such as this fellow, it can get very sideways very quickly, and then the state of affairs for all is worse than it was before the 'help'. I would have done the exact same thing as you did but my alert status would be elevated to the degree that I would change anchorages if I could to deter a third visit.
I am sick and tired of being robbed and attacked because I appear to be a helpless old woman on a boat.... so I've taken up target practicing with a flare gun and bow and arrows , shooting jugs on a rope in the water so that word gets around that I am crazy and a good shot!!!
Maybe its the accents, or the smiles, your music or the beautiful surroundings, but hardship in your world seems mild and manageable. In contrast, here in the states, and in Chicago in particular, where crime, murder, shootings, looting and politics occupy such a big part of every newsday, our world just is almost intolerable. Every one of your posts gives me a few minutes of respite. Thanks as always for sharing. Calm in the middle of our storm.
I'm happy our videos bring some calm in the storm for you. 🙏 It's not always tranquil here for many people, we have poverty and depression in Sabah instead of the shootings, lootings and politics you describe. Sounds pretty awful though. 🥺 Liz 🙏
Great job! However, it appears you may have a problem on your hands. People care about one thing and one thing only and that is for their own survival. He will be back once again to ask for more.
I assumed my trash cooking ability was born of my first world “finger cooking” habits. Obviously, this fellow isn't ordering takeout, so I guess that's not it! Maybe some people just can't cook. On the upside, I'll never be short of charcoal.
His outrigger looked newly painted and in tip top condition. So his apparent neediness is questionable. But you did the right thing to diffuse the situation. 👍
You are Champs. Not condoning theft but I do condone empathy and compassion and perspective. Meanwhile in some countries Governments are handing out huge sums of money each week to people.
And that's been a point of discussion (even demonstration) over here, many Malaysians are unhappy about the lack of aid being sent out by the government. Most Malaysians are providing private and personal assistance to those in need. Sabah is in an unusual and precarious situation which we discuss in more detail here: ua-cam.com/video/1D5rkAunOy8/v-deo.html Liz 🙏
Delete if inappropriate. Matter of starving or dehydration, I think we would all do the same? We would try to explain ask dont take. 9 Months of lockdown???? Clearly that strategy has not worked or is not working. Fair play to you guys for showing some humanity. Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
I would have given him food ,clothing and money. And remind him to always ask for help. Not steal. I have never met a yachty who would not help him when asked especially during this covid plandemic I then would leave that day cause every villager would arrive soon after. I was 18 months in sumatra during covid. No issues
I speak from experience. I used to give kids in a market some change. I told them nothing in life is free and would have them carry my goods to my car. That was fine for a while but I guess they told their friends and after a couple months I couldn't return to that market. I would be swarmed by 20 to 30 little ones. I didn't mind so much but it drove my wife nuts and disrupted the market. I was getting pretty nasty glares.
Poor guy... without a pot to piss in or fuel to heat water in said pot to cook noodles explains why he doesn't cook. And yet, he learned enough english to be understood.
I just had a guy pretend his car was broken down and he asked me for help. Little did I know at the time he was stealing my stuff out of my car while I was busy with his car. He disappeared saying he was going to get a friend. I waited a bit for him and gave up and drove home. Later on I found my backpack and other stuff missing from my car. The pack and contents were of no value to anyone. The most valuable thing lost was a bit of my faith in humanity. Will do my best to keep on helping others and not get jaded.
P.s.: Is there anyway to track down the name and street address of the knucklehead who down-voted this video?? I'll do more than reach into his porthole...🤕...

Which incident is that? Do you mean the one where the man was knifed and thrown overboard while his wife was trussed up? That happened about 10 years ago 1500 miles away, and was blamed by the authorities on two escaped Myanmar slaves from a Thai fishing vessel. Unless you're thinking about the kidnappings in the Celebes/Sulu Seas? Nothing like that has happened at Kota Kinabalu. Facts please! 🤔 Liz
These thieves make a carrier of stealing from boats. You caught him before he stole something and then said he was hungry. Then comes back to steal from the hand that fed him. Today a hat. Tomorrow your outboard engine, dinghy, bikes, etc. AT NIGHT... You where right off the main land and should have called the law. If the law didn't respond, at least it would have been recorded and in your Log Book. You just promoted theft.
No, you've misunderstood the situation. The conclusions you come to couldn't be more wrong. Watch again with an open mind and please try to understand the specific situation here in Sabah, it's not the same as where you're from. Liz
yea and no basic education what so ever apparently .. he was not been taught any life saving skills.. what a shame.. it will truely be a hillbilly who will be last ones on earth..lol i guess he missed the movie wilson island..tom hanks..lol .. you allz good peeps for helping him out .. fed a man once he live to be fed another day, teach him to feed himself he will continue the gratitude to everyone he meets..
Unlikely. No crime was committed in the end and we would never press any kind of charges against someone with so little. The authorities here are very well aware of the dire straits many people are in. Liz
I hope you are right. I was thinking more on the lines of vigilante action from locals. In some tourist areas the unofficial locals can come down much harsher on ne'er-do-wells who target the tourists than the authorities ever do. With tourism suffering so badly they might be extra-eager vigilant to protect their area's reputation towards the day this is all over.
It happened in Turkey. A local lad was caught stealing from three boats at anchor by a village and the villagers took matters into their own hands as he'd brought shame onto his family and home. In another example a dinghy was stolen from a boat in Thailand and was returned later that day by the village elders. It does happen.
Catch a thief then try to “educate” viewers on why we should tolerate it. Better he got caught by you because I’d shoot. Being poor does not give you a right to steal from others
What would YOU have done? Let us know in the comments...
I'd have the dude Arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law

So please keep being yourself’s and carry on doing what it is a brilliant job……
Hope you check this, and hopefully we will cross paths one day.
Cheers :)
What a lovely comment to read, thank you! We're delighted to welcome you on board our channel. 👌
Our age difference is similar to yours and your wife. 😊 Liz x
Well handled, and at least the guy wasn't aggressive. It's tough to know what to do, but I think you did the right thing.
Admittedly I held back my anger and after recording this I found he'd taken a second hat. That was handled rather differently!
How will I wake up the morning of the issue? What did I/we do the day/night before? Because that may likely influence our/my reaction! I think you guys handled it exceptionally well.
Thanks for your comment, it's much appreciated. 🙏 Liz
Very compassionate of you. Somebody should teach him how to cook. How did Liz's hat look on him?
Not sure how it looked on him but it made me look pretty angry!
It appears he's up the creek without a paddle, people will go to extremes when the going get's tough and all other options are exhausted, on another note, weather there looks very nice, here it's getting cold and wet ( normal conditions ) and happy Halloween, have a spooky good time.
Indeed, that poor fella has nothing and he's not the only one, there are terrible stories of poverty and destitution everywhere. 🥺🙏 Liz
We need to end these lockdowns.
Things are looking up here since we recorded this, thank goodness. 🙏 Liz
The KK segment without the mic actually worked quite well!
The photos saved us, Bryan!
Just got a new subscriber and follower. Y’all are awesome friggin people.
Thank you! 🙏 Wonderful to have you aboard with us. Liz 🤗
Yes, agreed, David. If we were anchored closer to his kampong we probably would have moved on but he'd paddled a mile across the bay to get to us.
It's not always tranquil here for many people, we have poverty and depression in Sabah instead of the shootings, lootings and politics you describe. Sounds pretty awful though. 🥺 Liz 🙏
Great job! However, it appears you may have a problem on your hands. People care about one thing and one thing only and that is for their own survival. He will be back once again to ask for more.
Of that there is no doubt but I'll be sure to tell him where to go next time!
Really good videos, thanks👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤟🥃
Pleasure 😃👍
I assumed my trash cooking ability was born of my first world “finger cooking” habits. Obviously, this fellow isn't ordering takeout, so I guess that's not it! Maybe some people just can't cook.
On the upside, I'll never be short of charcoal.
Broken mic = great video montage. I like it.
Thanks, Ed! We want to include more of Jamie's stills photography going forward. 🙏 Liz
Ditto!, or _¡ditto!_. 😁
Sabah is in an unusual and precarious situation which we discuss in more detail here: ua-cam.com/video/1D5rkAunOy8/v-deo.html
Liz 🙏
Prrobably, the same you did. Hard COVID times... Hold fast, guys!
Cheers. We continue to amuse and occupy ourselves 😃
@@followtheboat The best of luck with it! Everything has an end, hopefully, this pandemic as well.
It's working in terms of the numbers of vaccinated and infected, but the economic impact has been devastating.
You should consider what the infection rates would have been like without the public health measures…
A thief is a thief and is always playing you. Cannot be trusted.
I would have given him food ,clothing and money. And remind him to always ask for help. Not steal. I have never met a yachty who would not help him when asked especially during this covid plandemic
I then would leave that day cause every villager would arrive soon after.
I was 18 months in sumatra during covid. No issues
Well said. Where were you in Sumatra?
@@followtheboat banyacks and nias. Had the surf in banyacks all to myself for a year and a half. Now i can retire.
He will be back next week for more... hope your on board
He didn't come back. Liz
We see things as we are. I feel sorry for you Mel.
@@earthangel8730 you mis understood

You still wear underpants? Damn, that was the first thing I stopped wearing.
What’s the website for this tourist place?
I'm not sure I understand the question. We were at anchor by an island off Kota Kinabalu.
As a Malaysian who sail, I am sorry that you encounter such low life in the country.
No worries, Tai. 99.9% of the people we meet in Malaysia are good people 😎👍
To be honest, he was gentle and harmless (maybe a bit simple?) we felt sorry for him. We have never witnessed any bad behaviour in Sabah. 🙏 Liz
Wait for 20 more
There is always that possibility. If we were closer to his kampong I suspect that would have been the case.
Indeed. I suspect his first language is Filipino and can speak English and probably Bahasa too. That's more language skills than most.
Which city did this occur in?
Like his boat
P.s.: Is there anyway to track down the name and street address of the knucklehead who down-voted this video?? I'll do more than reach into his porthole...🤕...
😂😂
my youngest son like to eat Romaine dry from the package. Yuck! He and his friends love them.

...doesn't look hungry...you got played.
No.
food yes i would give food but a hat and what else food yes anything else no ill send you too Davy Jones Locker with a 20lb concreat block ziped tied too his neck and tell him too say hello to Davy for me but for food ill never hurt anyone for food or water ill give all i can as hungry hurts no one can stand that and i should miss a meal or two that poor man could have lots of food looks like he needs it god bless you for helping him but we have too draw a line some where food ok anything else no
I doubt he paddled all the way there to get a handful of food. He went there trying to get anything of value he could get away with.
You're probably right.
Don't forget the couple killed near Thai/Malaysian border on their boat....
🤔 Liz
@@followtheboat yes that's the one.a long way from KK of course.
Liz
If you had angered him, he may have came back again to sink your boat.
The possibility is always there. This is where reading a situation is important.
How would someone sink a sailboat from a canoe?
give him fishing gear
MCGI CHURCH God bless
And just like a pigeon he will be back again and with friends...dont feed the birds.
A number of people have said this would happen. It didn't. Liz
He only apologized because he got caught. If he was as innocent as he tried to appear, he would have asked for permission instead of forgiveness.
Yep, agreed 👍
yea and no basic education what so ever apparently .. he was not been taught any life saving skills.. what a shame.. it will truely be a hillbilly who will be last ones on earth..lol i guess he missed the movie wilson island..tom hanks..lol .. you allz good peeps for helping him out .. fed a man once he live to be fed another day, teach him to feed himself he will continue the gratitude to everyone he meets..
Wise words 👌
No basic education but speaks English?
: )
Why does your thumbnail portray the thief as white?
I know it's difficult to tell, but the cartoon in the thumbnail is not a real person.
@@followtheboat Still portrays him as white. If the thief was white, would it matter if you used a black character?
Hopefully that guy isn't going to face more horrible consequences due to your filming him and putting it online.
@@svbarryduckworth628 Can you give an example of a city where this vigilante stuff happens to protect tourists?
It happened in Turkey. A local lad was caught stealing from three boats at anchor by a village and the villagers took matters into their own hands as he'd brought shame onto his family and home. In another example a dinghy was stolen from a boat in Thailand and was returned later that day by the village elders. It does happen.
Catch a thief then try to “educate” viewers on why we should tolerate it. Better he got caught by you because I’d shoot. Being poor does not give you a right to steal from others
You're right, it doesn't, but shooting him in this scenario would make you the criminal. Let's use a bit of common sense, please.
All you did was encourage a more dangerous situation for the next boat
Good on you how you treated the local. Desperate times for them
