Why is the product free if it's so good? What is Cloudfare gaining from this? (Are they going to sell my data just like any ISPs? If that's the case, what's the point?)
The whole internet meant to be free. But there are some company that thinks the other way. For example, if you want to be a domain registrar, that way you can register new DNS names, you have to contact a company called -> icann. You have to pay 10k in euros (for me) as a starter fee and after that a monthly subscription fee which is over 200 euros and after every single domain I've created I have to pay for icann. The same thing applies to the ip system. You have to pay (monthly subscription) to gain access to IP blocks which will be then routed to your server. So now you can see that everything has a price. I wanted to create my own hosting company, but after I've spend 100k euros to get some equipment and subscribed to gain IPs and the rights to join to the global DNS system, I've realized that this "company" burned my money faster than my BMW E60 M5 (5.0L V10) while driven daily.

Idk why people are complaining about the video length. The 30 seconds refer to the app taking 30 seconds to connect to the DNS. Idk if I’m wooshing or if people are just insane
Linus, please correct me if I'm wrong but system/network engineers used to use 1.1.1.1 for testing servers or connections and sometimes kept them at 1.1.1.1 DNS. This means constant drop offs, I changed my router directly to hit DNS 1.1.1.1 and every day or two I will get drop offs, I changed it back to 8.8.8.8 and no issues at all. can you please give me your advise on this ?
Okay, so here is my problem with 1. , I love it and it's great and actually works. It's just with 1. address (I don't use the app because of android 9) some ISP's and networks actually DON'T allow you to connect at them at all. Now it would be fine if this was like 5-10% of networks but this is like half. It's quite disappointing that ISP's don't allow custom DNS's at all.
I've been using DNS servers 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 on my Xbox One X for a little while now. The lag in the user interface was unbearable using default settings, now it's very smooth!
@@phizlip Bahnhof, they're a Swedish ISP. They're super against the government watching over their users web browsing, and they refuse to give user logs to the police unless the court tells them too. And even then they sometimes go to court to fight the system to give their customers more privacy. Super cool company, and really cheap internet too. You can get 10gbps (yes GIGAbit per second) for barely 50 bucks a month in some places I think
You can change the dns manually in the PIA app. Change the vpn standard to OpenVPN and then you can set custom dns servers. I’m running it this way right now
I set up 1.1.1.1 on my router after LTT’s first video about it. Seemed like a good idea. Several months go by and everything was fine. Then started random instances of not having an internet connection. I’d be connected to my network just fine but couldn’t load or access anything on the internet. This would happen randomly and wouldn’t resolve itself for hours. I disabled it and never had an issue again. Later got a new router but never configured it to go to 1.1.1.1. Finally decided to try it again after seeing this new video. Fine for an hour and a half, and then all of a sudden the loss of internet access again. Which has never happened to me with this new router until now. I think I’m staying away from this 1.1.1.1 junk for good.
Hey Linus can you possibly make a video on what the best Music Production Desktop and setup would be... If you cant do the full setup try to just do the Music Production PC.
Reminder that if you aren't paying for the product, you are the product. Also, DNS queries are cached locally so this does absolutely nothing for a site you've visited recently. DNS servers specify how often you must re-check the address, but a common value is 24h. So in other words, this will only speed up loading by some tens of ms the first time you load a new site in a ~24 hour period. All other times it will do absolutely nothing. Edit: also worth noting that your ISP will still be able to see what servers you access anyways, so this really doesn't improve security in any meaningful way. If anything it makes it worse because now yet another company has (a small piece of) your data.
@@zxcaaq Ironic that you're calling him stupid idiot. He meant the video is for non *tech-savvy* people. Don't tell me your brain couldn't compensate for a misplace of a hyphen.
Sure Danny keep thinking that. I can bet you they will definitely use that data for something in the future. Just like how ibm bought the weather channel and now uses it to gather data to “further the user experience”.
Linus, PIA can easily handle DNS as well. Also, I don't trust the Cloudflare DNS since they do retain logs, even if it's for a short period of time. You can avoid the VPN issue if you just use the PIA app. Also, some OpenVPN apps allow you to specify which DNS servers you want to use
I love how I've been through all of this stuff whilst studying for my degree, yet here I am still watching the video just because I find the format and conciseness interesting.
First off, this video is way too late. Secondly, the amount of speed changing DNS servers will give you is miniscule. So this is mostly clickbait. The real reason to switch to CloudFlare's DNS is privacy. The DNS may not be the most important part for privacy (and changing DNS servers won't stop your ISP from spying on your internet traffic or allow to access region block content. So that's misleading.) but changing it to a an encrypted and good DNS still gives you a bit more privacy. So it is a good idea to change it. Also, there's not much of a use for using the app if you can just change it on your router and it changes for all devices connected to it. And there's definitely no benefit of privacy if you're still using Google Chrome.
Actually the app makes sense if you are using wifi outside of your own home. And in online games, shaving 10-20ms can be the difference between life and death.
I work in a hotel, with hundreds of people connected to the same WiFi, so CloudFlare 1.1.1.1 really does make a difference for me. Won't matter much at home because I have a Fibre Optic connection.
All of these alternative DNS providers were always worse than my various ISP ones. And I'm right next to a major internet exchange. I mean it makes sense as they can place servers closer to you in the access network. But data confidentiality and censorship were also never a problem with them.

OMG I HAVE SHITTY WIFI AND THIS HELPED SO MUCH THANK YOU!!!
I think maybe a video about Pi-hole might be a good idea.
pihole doesnt get the recognition it deserves lmao
@@Kushra21 PiHole desn't have the money to get an LTT sponsored vdeo
Just tested it. I have a 127.0.0.1 VPN & my own VPN provider enabled at the same time on my phone.
I've been using DNS servers 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 on my Xbox One X for a little while now. The lag in the user interface was unbearable using default settings, now it's very smooth!
I literally didn't understand anything he said 😶
Alex Kalugin basically download PIA his sponsor lol
Fkn same 😂
He said it's safe but not so safe. Fast but not too fast, download it but there's alternative. Typical nerd answers
me to
That's because it's just a minor tweak he got from 100 other sites.
1. build ur own vpn on a cloud server
2. point that VPN to 1dot
3. enjoy private browsing faster
7:43 It's apparently pretty difficult to press the button, since when you pressed it, it didn't stay on.
Thank god my ISP cares about peoples privacy where I live, they will even go to court on your behalf if they need to
What isp is it
@@phizlip Bahnhof, they're a Swedish ISP.
I really dont care about privacy except for billing type websites and uh... you know... the other ones... But other than that, no big deal 😂
@@CIubDuck I'm moving to sweden.
germany's internet infrastructure is archaic
@@issaciams pretty sure you're trolling... you don't want google/amazon/the government to know everything you do..
Wow a add that actual is in a video that is relevant to the theme.
"Wow, and ad that is actually relevant to the video"
Fixed that for you...
found that very informative, with a few innuendos thrown in!
BETTER Phone WiFi in 30 Seconds!
Step #1: get a better phone
Step #2: get a better wifi
The end.
I never get out of home, i can do It manually just once
Just change it on your router, then everything will be faster.
I always like the humor on your videos. Love the t-shirt tho. 😊
Hey Linus can you possibly make a video on what the best Music Production Desktop and setup would be... If you cant do the full setup try to just do the Music Production PC.
We we all know now that Linus gets off to having private internet
Nobody except the VPN provider knows what he gets off to
Reminder that if you aren't paying for the product, you are the product.
You made 8 minutes out of this... 30 seconds.... really Linus?
This was a video for non-tech savvy people for some reason.
@@zxcaaq Ironic that you're calling him stupid idiot. He meant the video is for non *tech-savvy* people. Don't tell me your brain couldn't compensate for a misplace of a hyphen.
Yes because he had to explain, you moron
everyone above me is retarded
All sounds great, but how is 1. Actually making their money
Cloudflare are big enough that making the internet a better place benefits them indirectly
Sure Danny keep thinking that.
I can bet you they will definitely use that data for something in the future. Just like how ibm bought the weather channel and now uses it to gather data to “further the user experience”.
Sorry that sounded so sarcastic
They provide paid DDOS protection? And they are actually good at it
@Daniel Brozovic i guess having a pool of ipaddresses of everyone around the world helps with that
Wow just downloaded it and I notice a huge difference thank you
I have never had issues with Wi-Fi at home. But then again, I live in a small two bedroom apartment. LOL
Thanks, I use 1.1.1.1 and it improves my loading times.
OMG I WAS YOUR 10 MILLIONTH SUB
When you try to watch this video with bad WiFi speed
Or bad data speeds because you have a cap and used that data limit eons ago....
I love how I've been through all of this stuff whilst studying for my degree, yet here I am still watching the video just because I find the format and conciseness interesting.
1:13 lol i thought it's buffering...
ORO 0147 1.1.1.1 compared to other dns is considerably snappier and faster
ikr I can manually change it anyway
Do you only use Wi-Fi in your home, or do you just take your router with you everywhere?
I work in a hotel, with hundreds of people connected to the same WiFi, so CloudFlare 1.1.1.1 really does make a difference for me. Won't matter much at home because I have a Fibre Optic connection.
for everyone saying it's not a 30 second video: He also shows and tells a lot of cool stuff about it. setting it up will take about 30 seconds
I cant tell if he wants me to use it or not
Correct video title: how to improve website loading pages on general a tiny bit, this has nothing at all to do with WiFi
And even then devices cache DNS queries
All of these alternative DNS providers were always worse than my various ISP ones. And I'm right next to a major internet exchange. I mean it makes sense as they can place servers closer to you in the access network. But data confidentiality and censorship were also never a problem with them.
You can set a custom DNS server in the PIA VPN app and still use both the VPN and the private DNS.
"Speaking of hard.. How I feel." ??? wtf 7:45
Just use ur neighbor's Wi-Fi.
Already doing
Well I am, no need to pay for internet when ur neighbour has it
