My shotokan teacher, was an 4 degree black belt, and past the red belt all our exams were made by ou national federation. It comes like this, white, yellow, orange, green, blue, red ,brown and we had 3 brown degrees. And normally it would take 2 yeard before each exame, ive made it to brown 3rd dan back to back. My sensei was a manufacturer, he even made your belt darker if you were exceptionally well in the exam.
one time i was allowed to join one of my friends during their karate classes and all they had left for me was either a purple or black belt and for shits and giggles they gave me the black belt to wear in a class full of white belts, they all looked at me like i was some celebrity while they were probably better than me

About the people saying “what about brown belt” well this guy is probably a coach or a proffesional so he probably knows better then guessing because cobra kai had brown belts. If not then it’s probably because each dojo has their own belts.
