There is a big chunk missing in the Paris story. The Swede Raoul Nordling persuaded Choltitz to not blow up Paris, so that's the true hero. There is a movie about it from 2014 called Diplomacy.
September 26 1983 was one day before my 2nd birthday.
I almost had a very very different "terrible twos"
There was an American battleship that survived WWII and I think WWI without ever taking a hit. In the Korean War, she took her first and only hit from a single NK artillery piece on a beach. The ship aimed all of her main guns at it and fired, giving cartographers a new job in redrawing the local map. One of her destroyer escorts pulled up and flashed "Temper, temper.". No lives were lost aboard the battleship.
If you'd like more, I suggest Count Dankula's Absolute Mad Lads series and Fat Electrician's channel.
That ship was the USS Wisconsin, she was not built during WW1. That 152mm shell caused no major damage and only injured three sailors. It was the only direct hit the ship ever received.
