Thank you very much for the mini tutorial. You are a discovery for me, and an oasis in the desert when it comes to VRAY tutorials with C4D.

Hello friend! Thank you very much for this tutorial. I have one question, hope you can help me with this. I have vray 5.2 for c4d R25 and I´m in the early stages of learning the engine. When I select the checkbox for "use caustics" in the vray tab, they only seem to appear in the VFB if, and only if I have selected the CPU engine. When I switch to the GPU engine the caustics just disappear. Also while in GPU mode, the bucket sampler does not work. Any thoughts on this? Thanks again for all the knowledge shared :)

Hi, caustics are not supported by the GPU engine. GPU engine works better in progressive mode, you can split the scene in large buckets only when you use multiple GPU, however each bucket will still work in progressive internally. Vray CPU and Vray GPU are two different engine, they do not produce identical results and don't support the same feature set. GPU engine is getting better with every upgrade but overall Vray CPU is more versatile, more stable, and plenty fast (even faster then GPU for same tasks using comparable hardware). If you are learning Vray be sure to subscribe to our channel and check our latest video on the museum scene they are very informative;)

Hi!! Thanks a lot for the reply. Random question, do you have an estimated date for the release of the "V-ray 5 for Cinema 4D Online Course"?
I´ll be more than happy to follow all your teachings. Thanks a lot again!!

Hello @3d Render and Beyond. Thanks for this new video series (VRay 5.1), but I have a doubt. This Caustics "Progressive" mode already existed in the previous version, 5.0. What's the difference for this version 5.1? Thanks! Regards!

As far as I know the progressive mode for caustics have been introduced with 5.1 update in C4D. Caustics were available before but they needed to be pre-computed before being used with the bucket or progressive sampler. Now instead caustics are computed while running in progressive and simply refines over time. Also, the old method often involves quite a bit of work on the caustics setup (on both render settings and individual lights) while this new mode requires basically no setup from my tests.

@@3DRenderandBeyond yes, in the previous version, 5.0, in VRay's Render Settings window in the Gi tab, there is the Caustics option and just below, after you activate the Caustics, there are 3 modes. 1 - New Map. 2 - From File and 3 - Progressive. But as I'm not a V-Ray advanced user (I use Corona/Octane and Redshift more), I can't say what changed from version 5.0 to 5.1. You clarified some changes from one to the other for me, but as I mentioned, there was already Caustics Progressive Mode in 5.0. It's not a new thing that only appeared in 5.1. In your opinion, what's the best caustics results? In Corona (for C4D) or in VRay (new version 5.1)? And which one is less complex to configure? Thanks!

@@jfcalcena In both Corona and Vray progressive mode ther's zero setup time so in that regard there's no difference, from my early tests Vray seems a bit faster in some circumstances and produces less artifacts, that being said is the same technology so you should not expect big differences.. in both engine if you give the renderer enough time you will get clean caustics so your best option is to try by yourself what's the best solution for your scenes. It is weird that you have noticed progressive caustics before the 5.1, maybe they were in the UI but not active? even on the documentation log says they where introduced with 5.1 docs.chaosgroup.com/display/VC4D/V-Ray+5

@@3DRenderandBeyond Well, I always notice that option was in 5.0 version. This isn't new. Because I'm user Corona Renderer, and I compare this two renderers. Please, see my print of my 5.0 version. And it's an active mode, working fine.

It is basically the same procedure, just be sure to get some real geometry for the waves and set the sun caustic radius to contain the size of the water volume
