I've owned many new Japanese bikes over the last 50 years and never took any of them back to the dealer for a service. I just do regular oil and filter changes and get consumables changed when required. Also I've never had a single breakdown!! 😊
I think you’ll find even modern Jap bikes will have issues these days - the basic components aren’t constructed of the same quality level as they were back in the day. It’s just an economic fact sadly.
I couldn't echo your thoughts more Bruce! I'm at 9000miles on mine and I have the same gripes and loves! I also wasn't a fan of the gear change compared to my 1250 but I changed the lever to an SW Motech one to replace the OEM plastic one and its made a world of difference!
@@teapotone I think so mate! It didn't feel like it flexed much but since changing the lever it's made a huge improvement especially downshifts using the blipper which previously were quite often clunky but are now (mostly) buttery smooth!
My R1300GS is on 6500 miles now. I respect it but don't necessarily love it. Sure is a fast bugger for a GS. As a comfy fast tourer though it's hard to beat. Think you nailed it Bruce, it's the BMW package, none of the competition can bring it all together quite so successfully.
Aye but they are getting close these days, I’m hearing great things about Ducati and KTM ownership from people the last year or two - Ducati in particular 👍
@@teapotoneI have a -24 KTM 1290 SAS. So much fun, love that bike. The GS i more comfortable for sure, but not nearly as fun, I think. I was willing to sacrifice some comfort for the excitement, so went with the KTM. Might get the GS in the future. Approaching 50, so might prioritize differently in a couple of years.

I've owned a k1600gt in the past, which was excellent for two up touring, but I ended up getting a goldwing, which we love. Thanks for your content.
Love the review, Bruce. I had the SOS come up on my 1250 in Germany (of all places!). Stayed on all the way home. Vines told me it was a system issue at BMW. They cleared it, and warned it may appear again. But, not seen it since.

Hi Bruce, just hired one for five days in Romania riding the Transalpina and Transfargarasan. I agree with your likes and dislikes. Id have to layout about £11K to swap from my 1250. Not for me. If youve never had a GS you wont be disappointed with it. Still a great bike and it was all very familiar as I sat on it the dirst time . I like the gearbox whine!! Take care.
Really enjoyed your review Bruce 👍🏻 Every bike has niggles, I think the 1300 caters for riders who have gone through sportsbikes and want a bike that can cover many bases, more so than the 1200/1250, as good as they are.
I still like my 1250, however I did test ride the 1300 and fell in love. Unfortunately the market is flooded with 1250’s and the part exchange offer I received was quite shocking. Great review Bruce.
I typically have my favorites (hamburger button) set to windshield, and long press for heated grips/seat. It's super easy, and really the only two I need for the most part. So I don't think I need a dedicated heating button, just hold for 2 seconds and it v switches from windshield to heating, then after a few seconds of not touching the rocker switch, right back to windshield. Simple.

I'm waiting for someone to pick up the mapping for Jekyll and Hyde.. in theory a brilliant idea, but quite a few mapping companies don't touch them because it would cost a fortune to get right due to the changes in backpressure so I reckon you made the right move. I believe it means mapping each engine mode to each exhaust valve setting individually, including the start up procedures the GS has etc. I'm sure it was 15 different maps needed or something crazy! LMK when you want to take out my old girl! Give you some ideas for sparking some towel-flicked danglies into the Gelände Straße Love you big boy
Nice Teapot, another UA-camr talked about the SOS problem the other day and many comments reporting the same. One comment said BMW were bringing a firmware update in September not sure if that’s happened or not. It seems to plague any bike that has it, my RT did it once I thought it was because I’d been in heavy rain for six hours the day before as it disappeared later the next day but maybe not.
I always say fitting a full system on any bike feels (and sounds) like you have a new bike again. Well worth doing after a year or so and If you start to get bored with your bike 😁😁

I’ve got a 2016 MultiStrada 1200S and I’ve test ridden the new GS too with a view to swapping but although I loved the engine, for everything else I prefer my older MultiStrada. For one the multi is still more powerful imho, it has backlit switchgear, proper pegs and decent seat all as standard. The old multi doesn’t have a quickshifter but does have proper lighting at the rear. What really annoys me for all its good points the new GS needs modifying and money spending on it to make it right out of the box when it’s already 20 but realistically £23k+ bike new and the electronics on the BMWs seem to have annoying glitches but then again maybe any new bike could have those issues tbh.. I’ll wait for the new KTM SA1390 or try the new V4 Multi.

@zexypupil they’re fantastic lights - not convinced they warrant that price tag but they have undoubtedly done an incredible job in the r&d, manufacture, and product quality - it’s top notch as always with their kit. You have a LOT of options to tailor the lights to exactly how you like them, but I think a lot of people will go overboard and just end up with lights that are far too bright for general use. As far as doing the job as lights go and lighting the way ahead in the dark, they are head and shoulders the brightest lights (in terms of reach and penetration) that I’ve ever experienced. But how often do you actually ride at night, or at night when there is no available ambient light? If you do, then these will be a God-send. If like me most of your riding is daytime, then the DRL functions are brilliant. The ability to work with your indicators and hazard lights, horn, flashers etc is awesome
Yeah there are two problems the lights will address for me: 1. More indicators and amber DRLs = more visibility in traffic, around junctions etc. 2. While I do ride mostly during the day, when I do ride at night it is in the countryside in the UK or through France with starlight for company so spotting wild boar earlier will be good. I couldn’t find another reputable supplier of lights that could address the amber DRLs, indicator mirroring, driving lights and long range main beam all in one light pod pair with the convenience of a tucked away canbus interface. I too have concerns about the price, not just of these (it’s about a grand for D7s) and I really hope I don’t take a stone to the lens as they aren’t replaceable apparently. All in all though I cannot wait to get them fitted to my KTM so I can enjoy more night riding and relax just a little more around junctions. Looking forward to your vid on the lights and thanks again for all the reviews and riding vids - you inform, encourage and just plain keep people company more than you’ll ever know 👍🏻
The SOS fault: .... had the same on my 2021RT.... took Vines 2 attempts to fix and eventually just replaced the entire thing under warranty. Fine for just over a year now.
You summed it up as you pulled into the petrol station. The GS has never done one thing outstandingly well… but does everything very well. Mines at 6k and I love it… even got used to the hamburger button now. 😂🎉
Getting my Honda Shadow Phantom valve clearance done this week! It will cost a about $650. Only difference is the service includes spark plugs, and all the oils changed.

Yet another great video! I don’t think I could live with that engine/exhaust sound. It’s terrible (IMHO). Sound is such an important part of an ICE motorcycle’s character and experience.
Paid £852 for 12k Valve check service Triumph tiger 900 gt pro. That was with a discount!! Was told would have been approx £1200 if they needed adjusting which they didn’t. To rub salt in wounds was also told generally they don’t need doing until 24k Service. Begs the question why bother at 12k. Servicing costs are becoming ridiculous. Looking at the new GSA for the new year. Looks Gorgeous IMO
Nice one Bruce. I think you’ve seen enough of me this year to know I’ve been absolutely loving mine! Yes, perhaps the engine is over refined but I can certainly live with that after touring on a more characterful Triumph 1200xe. The new GS is like a Rolls Royce of a ride in comparison. I’ve been disappointed with my aftermarket BMW Ackropovic “silencer”, looks great but has made absolutely no difference to the exhaust sound. A waste of £900. I also opted out of adding the dynamic package as I wasn’t bothered about having a quickshifter. Little did I know that there is no dynamic/dynamic pro riding mode if you don’t have the quickshifter fitted. It can’t be fitted aftermarket by BMW as I have asked the question. Saying this the bike still flies in road mode. Other features I thought unnecessary and saved me money were the adaptive ride height, not necessary if you can flat foot the bike and the riding assistant safety features wasn’t for me personally, front & rear observations and regular lifesaver head checks are all part of my riding although I appreciate some would want these radar assists fitted. The break lights with integrated indicators, yeah, I should have them changed out. Foot pegs, no issues with my size 10 feet. Seat, gets uncomfortable after two hours riding. I think most seats do don’t they? I do use a comfortair cushion which really helps on longer journeys. I bought into the service package up front which included the 6, 12, 18k and also the 600 mile running in service which I think was £1100 which I thought was reasonable. Overall, I’m a very happy first ever GS owner, coming up to 12,000 since I bought it in March and it’s been a pleasure to ride. YEEHAA !
That service package looks fantastic value bud, I should really have gone for that myself 🤦♂️ Your bike definitely was higher than mine, and your engine sounded totally different - mine was rattling like a good’un. However, it’s just had a firmware update which reset everything on the bike. Now it seems to ride the same height as yours, and the engine also sounds a lot better - they did top up the oil though too😉 Exhaust - yeah it’s the Euro 6 compliance bollocks they’ve got going on in the headers/cat etc, means whatever slipon you put on will generally have little effect on the grunt/tone sadly. I must admit though, I heard a few 1300GS’s with the new Jekyill & Hyde exhaust and they do sound fruitier - check out TrophyPete and ToroRides on instagram 👍
Hi Bruce, thank you for the review. I would add the electric screen is brilliant and the gearbox is still clunky and should be a lot better. So much so that I test rode the GS with ASA - auto box and fully manual. It’s brilliant,it’s smooth it changes gear like a Honda! In fact I liked it so much I’ve traded my 13 for the auto one. I would be interested in your thoughts on it so hoping you will take one out on the road soon.
I have a late 1250 and that has the whine and I mentioned it at the dealership (Shipley/Vertue) and the service manager told me that BMW had changed the supplier of the clutch basket has a revised gear teeth profile and that causes the whine.
I think that’s why BMW was hesitant to put an estimated amount of miles you can ride on their bikes. On my F800GT it starts counting up when you hit reserve. That in combination with your trip counter gives a good idea on how far you can still go.
BMW did that because the shape of the underseat tank on the F650/750/800 series is quite complex, and especially the route of the fuel into the engine, so estimating range to empty is much harder compared to a standard simple shape tank. The earlier models had a range reading but it was totally unreliable - I ran dry once on an F650GS with apparently 20 miles left - so they switched it to a count up. Having had several of these midrange F bikes I would also say that the fuel gauge and fuel economy rating on these bikes is quite unreliable as well.
@@MV-XD2 interesting. I have been riding an F800 since 2011 (8 years the ST and about 5 the GT now) and they have been very stable in fuel consumption. Around 4.1-4.2 for over 100k kms that I rode them combined.
@JeroenvanKleef I found when I lost the first bar on the fuel gauge I could get 10 litres in. Also when the fuel light comes on its definitely time to look for fuel.
@@chrishart8548 that doesn’t sound good no. First bar should be half the tank. When my fuel light comes on I still have about 60-80kms. Maybe it wasn’t properly calibrated?

I know what you mean by not engaging enough and too refined. That's why I sold my GS1250. I currently own a R12 ninet but miss the wind protection but is one of the most engaging bikes I've ridden. I tested the Mandello V100s on a couple of occasions and that's a wonderful mix of character and sports touring ability. I might test the GS1300 but I think that ultimately I would find it too slick for weekend blasts.
On my R1250GSA, when the range indicator reaches 0 the bike still has 5L in the tank. So there’s no reason to be nervous when you see that counter go down 😊
I watched a guy on u tube check and change shims 30 minutes each pot . Did they replace any shims ? If they did ask for them because they are expensive apparently and you can sell them on 👍
My XR had the same problem when I first bought it, it drove the mechanic mad trying to sort it out. In the end it turns out you have to unplug the ezycan I had a look at a 1300gs when my bike was in for a service and I thought bmw had accidentally built a 1300 XR
Hey guys, I’m a motorcyclist since 1978. I’ve had over 30 bikes up to 1300ccs. When I’m in the car with Mrs Kev, we might be travelling at 40 to 50 mph in a 60. I don’t see your problem. Just overtake 👍
5 years ago the valve clearance on my v-strom 1000XT cost me £630 (and they still didn't do the full job). The only service at the time that more expensive was the old 1260 Diavel, which was well into 4 figures (well, it was Desmo). Service costs over the years seems to have improved all round.
You say it's a daft thing if a bike is too good, that's the whole reason I bought the only bike I regret selling, the MT-10. The Triumph Speed Triple had my heels up my arse (Really high pegs for a naked) so I returned that to the dealer within half an hour, then I rode the S1000R Sport and it was amazing in every category to my mind, to the point it was clinical, brilliant but I didn't want one. The MT-10 was more brutish and wild, power wheelies and slightly imperfect brakes that I had to get used to, that crossplane soundtrack with more low end power than the BMW and no tingly vibrations meant that the less refined but more characterful Yammy got my money and the only bike spot in my garage... Thirsty as a parched Camel though. And now I ride a R1250GSA... What happened to me.
Haha I guessed 18.6 litres, not far off. Got to say Bruce I'm glad you like the bike so much. As a proper bike owner (Yamaha Tenere 😘) I do take the pee just a little from the GS crowd. But you can't fault the bikes really, and even I admit the 1300 looks WAY better than the old one. As for the new GSA, not a chance....
I test rode the R1300 GS. It had mahoosive amounts of power but felt agricultural and made a noise like a tractor’s tractor. Won’t buy one. May consider an R1250 GS. I’m not convinced you’ve upgraded Bruce. Sorry loon. It’s a wrong un. Notwithstanding my views on the bike, cracking vid as ayeways loon. Keep em coming chiel. (Doric acknowledgement)
Unrelated to review, but also took a calimoto route up to see fanily in notts (am Bromley based), agree with you, some absolutely belting roads from Essex upwards, especially round Peterborough and into Leicestershire. Particular favourite around the Vale of Belvoir! Have to say some of those long straight roads around Cambridgeshire Fens are pretty undulating, was out my seat a couple of times with the dips!
Hi Bruce, enjoying your video's, this one reminded me of a recent ride where I had gone 80 miles for a service at my nearest Moto Guzzi dealer and thought I could return home on one tank, the thing is with the V100S the range indicator gets to 50 miles then for some strange reason goes to zero then starts to count upwards, I thought it should be empty when a further 50 miles has elapsed so I decided to wait to get fuel at the garage nearest my home, now that proved to be a mistake as I literally ran out of fuel and the thing wouldn't start. Thankfully I had not long past a fuel station and was able to push it there and resume my journey. I think it was reading 44 miles and counting when it ran out, I personally think it would make more sense if it just counted down to zero.
I asked my honda dealer how much for vfr valve clearance and they said 1500 lol... they did also say to double the interval to 32k though as they are so rarely out and the first 16k check is normally a complete waste of money, still... 1500 jesus
How bad is the gearchange clonk (with the clutch) in the first 3 gears? I rode a 3k mile demo bike last weekend and it was the worst gearbox I've ever used, altho 4-5-6 was like butter. Curious to know if this dealer demo was shagged or not as it put me right off the bike compared to my 1250 GS
I find the exact same as you - was nice and smooth for the first few hundred miles, but is now probably clunkier than the 1250 - however as you say, gears 4,5,6 are generally much smoother🤷♂️👍

Hi Mister Meldrew, the whining noise is most likely gear or clutch drive mesh. I have heard whining noises on lots of various vehicles as well as several motorbike I have owned over the years, sometimes from the pillion or back seat driver. 🤣🤣 Good review of the beamer though Bruce although it is a bike I will never own, way too expensive for me plus I am a short legged 70 year old. I will stick with my Suzuki GSX650F till I decide to give up.
I have owned 89 different bikes: Italian, Japanese(All brands), German and British ( None American so far!!). I tested everyone in this class (Including R1250GS)…before ordering the R1300GS …. It has not disappointed…. In balance as a do it all big bike in the Garage it’s brilliant. This is taking all factors in consideration but especially the riding experience. I probably would not change if I had a low mileage 1250, but it’s a no brainier if as me you are buying back into the brand, but the 1300 raises the bar in all main areas just read all the road tests …The luggage issue is the only disappointment, as I won’t see these until next year, so I am told but I have been given compensation by BMW UK.
You do know the secondary function on the burger button can be set for seat/grip heating? Once done just a long press on the burger and hey presto rocker switch does the heat. Very easy
@frankhumphrey6402 yep course, but they’d just done a firmware update which put the bike back into factory settings, and the wonder wheel doesn’t currently work so I can’t change the function of the rocker switch and it’s set to the default range control for adaptive cruise control
It doesn’t - once the headers go on it won’t pass a mot, so will have to changed for that, but it doesn’t effect the warranty. It’s still Euro5 compliant but won’t be Euro6
Have you tried out the ‘24 Tiger 1200 yet, I’d really like to hear your thoughts on it. You gave the 900 a good review in the US any chance you could fit in a test? Good summing up of the 1300, especially the pegs, seat triangle etc…👍
Never ridden it 2-up, but I tour on it constantly with my touring company. It’s fantastic, very agile and dynamic, loads more power than you need, can carry as much kit as you want without affecting performance, shaft drive so maintenance on tour is practically zero, and weather protection is absolutely fine - I’m 6’3” and over 20 stone and I have no issues.
Sorry what I should have asked is, how does it compare to the 1250 in those regards. Contemplating trading in my 1250 for the 1300 or possibly a KTM 1290 adventure S(good deals on at the minute)😊
Did a tour on the Toro GS1300 just recently Bruce, one thing I did notice is that the QS probably needs some calibration. I found if I was light on the downshift the bike would blip the throttle for the down change but not change down, so would momentarily lurch forward on the blip, not a biggie as I adapted to being more purposeful on the down change, but I like to ride lightly on the controls especially with a pillion so this behaviour is not ideal. When I got home tried my 1250 and that doesn’t do it. Does yours do it? Or is it a a bike variance thing.?
The cheap valve clearance service? Well, firstly is is only a twin, secondly those two cylinders are sooooooo accessible, unlike the engine out job on my old Kawasaki GTR1400. So cheap as chips Bruce? I’d say, fair and in reality they’d be pulling a fast one charging a lot more.
Thanks Mark, when I filmed this it was immediately after I picked the bike up from the service, so my dealership had only just created the technical enquiry with BMW HQ about the rear disc/brake issue. I’ve since had their answer that they think replacing the rear DISC at 12,000 miles is reasonable with these new brakes?! I’ll be doing a vid on this in due time obviously, and will have to pay to have the rear disc changed when it goes in for the 18,000 mile service next week 🤦♂️

Sadly no I didn’t, I was fully expecting that to be the case but it wasn’t 🤷♂️ I completely agree with you, it’s bull💩that the disc should need changing at 12,000 miles with normal riding - they actually warned me at 6,000 miles that the rear disc was getting low on wear levels! 🤦♂️🤷♂️

Nice, but when are beemer gonna bring a new rs model out with better wind protection and the 1300 engine and a bigger fuel tank(just 3 litres would be nice)?
Is that gear lever really plastic? Tip: always ride a new bike until the tank is dry, that way you know your real range. Get to know your range and use an odo as a fuel gauge.
25K km on my 1300 now. It’s my 9th GS and on a functional level probably the best one. I find the riding experience…sterile, where’s the joy? The front “sports” brake is disappointing, it needs some heat braked into it before it really bites. Talking about build quality: plastic pedals, really??? I’m on my second high comfort seat, the first had a broken seat pan. Seat comfort is BAD. The electronic suspension(sports suspension, I’m 6.6 ) is starting to get softer. Pint on part of the frame is scoffed by mij knees. Maintenance is more expensive than my previous 1250’s. Will buy a new bike for 2026(this one will have done 60K by then) but I wonder if it is going be a GS again.
Ducati Multistrada V4S service costs every 9000 miles or 2 years an oil service £240, yearly inspection if you don't do the mileage for an oil service £80, the big valve service is at 36000 miles I expect this to be a big one but the other savings should make up for it. Who would think servicing on a V4 Ducati would be cheaper than a boxer twin.😂
Hi Abdi, I don’t like the way it looks personally, and I don’t think it really makes any difference when you’re actually riding the bike, in terms of visibility.
My friend sold his 2005 GS 1200 with 85k miles on it back at the start of the summer for one of these and he's had a fair few issues with it since. It's his daily for work so it's let him down and he's regretting the decision as of now. Must be said all the problems are technology based not mechanical
Aye I expected issues to be honest as it’s a completely new bike - I’d never usually buy the first generation of a new bike, usually wait at least 6 months for them to find and sort out all the bugs. But I thought I was in a good position to document any issues and let folks know about them 👍
Found the engine brilliant, noisy though, gear box great compared with the 1250 but riding position just a bit cramped. Having the decat headers Bruce will you be having it Hilltopped.😊
40mph is the modern day unofficial national limit, didn’t you know! General public feel they can drive comfortably without concentrating on anything at that speed whilst frustrating proper drivers.
I took a ride on my 1300 without earplugs the other day, and oh boy, I never had a engine sound so bad mechanically speaking. It sounds like is going to explode at any minute. Tje sounds are diverse! You have winning, rattles, and miscellaneous sounds everywhere. It is also a sound that appears to be coming from the cluch, since when I apply presure the sound changes. It sounds like 2 metal plates rubbing. And my oil was 1 liter down in 2k miles.the dealer told me I was riding "too gently."lol. She runs fine otherwise! I guess the solution is never ever ride without earplugs again! Lol
Why do you hang on to lower gears at higher speeds. On wide open roads at 60 mph and you are 4th. With all that low down grunt if you use 6th it would improve your fuel consumption no end.
Easier acceleration/deceleration engine braking etc. I’ll do 60mph in 3rd most of the time, hardly need to touch the brakes, just roll on roll off, effortlessly overtake, and you’ll pull up quicker in an emergency if you need to - especially mid corner. Still average 55mpg.
@akungwelly heating issues aren’t an issue for motovlogging as we have the air being pushed through/around the camera when we ride. I’ve just bought the Action 5 actually so will be trying it out over the next few months, along with the Hero 13 and the new Ace Pro 2 when it arrives 👍

That’s interesting to hear bud about the gear lever, possibly too much flex maybe with the OEM ones?
@@teapotone I think so mate! It didn't feel like it flexed much but since changing the lever it's made a huge improvement especially downshifts using the blipper which previously were quite often clunky but are now (mostly) buttery smooth!
My R1300GS is on 6500 miles now. I respect it but don't necessarily love it. Sure is a fast bugger for a GS. As a comfy fast tourer though it's hard to beat. Think you nailed it Bruce, it's the BMW package, none of the competition can bring it all together quite so successfully.
Aye but they are getting close these days, I’m hearing great things about Ducati and KTM ownership from people the last year or two - Ducati in particular 👍
@@teapotoneI have a -24 KTM 1290 SAS. So much fun, love that bike. The GS i more comfortable for sure, but not nearly as fun, I think. I was willing to sacrifice some comfort for the excitement, so went with the KTM.
Might get the GS in the future. Approaching 50, so might prioritize differently in a couple of years.

Love the review, Bruce. I had the SOS come up on my 1250 in Germany (of all places!). Stayed on all the way home. Vines told me it was a system issue at BMW. They cleared it, and warned it may appear again. But, not seen it since.

Hi Bruce, just hired one for five days in Romania riding the Transalpina and Transfargarasan. I agree with your likes and dislikes. Id have to layout about £11K to swap from my 1250. Not for me. If youve never had a GS you wont be disappointed with it. Still a great bike and it was all very familiar as I sat on it the dirst time . I like the gearbox whine!! Take care.

Really enjoyed your review Bruce 👍🏻 Every bike has niggles, I think the 1300 caters for riders who have gone through sportsbikes and want a bike that can cover many bases, more so than the 1200/1250, as good as they are.
I still like my 1250, however I did test ride the 1300 and fell in love. Unfortunately the market is flooded with 1250’s and the part exchange offer I received was quite shocking. Great review Bruce.

I typically have my favorites (hamburger button) set to windshield, and long press for heated grips/seat. It's super easy, and really the only two I need for the most part. So I don't think I need a dedicated heating button, just hold for 2 seconds and it v switches from windshield to heating, then after a few seconds of not touching the rocker switch, right back to windshield. Simple.

I'm waiting for someone to pick up the mapping for Jekyll and Hyde.. in theory a brilliant idea, but quite a few mapping companies don't touch them because it would cost a fortune to get right due to the changes in backpressure so I reckon you made the right move. I believe it means mapping each engine mode to each exhaust valve setting individually, including the start up procedures the GS has etc. I'm sure it was 15 different maps needed or something crazy!

Nice Teapot, another UA-camr talked about the SOS problem the other day and many comments reporting the same. One comment said BMW were bringing a firmware update in September not sure if that’s happened or not. It seems to plague any bike that has it, my RT did it once I thought it was because I’d been in heavy rain for six hours the day before as it disappeared later the next day but maybe not.
There is a fix mine has been done.
I always say fitting a full system on any bike feels (and sounds) like you have a new bike again. Well worth doing after a year or so and If you start to get bored with your bike 😁😁
The Triumph Triple whine, I took mine back to the main dealer every week for the first month complaining that it sounded like a Series 3 Land-Rover.

I’ve got a 2016 MultiStrada 1200S and I’ve test ridden the new GS too with a view to swapping but although I loved the engine, for everything else I prefer my older MultiStrada. For one the multi is still more powerful imho, it has backlit switchgear, proper pegs and decent seat all as standard. The old multi doesn’t have a quickshifter but does have proper lighting at the rear. What really annoys me for all its good points the new GS needs modifying and money spending on it to make it right out of the box when it’s already 20 but realistically £23k+ bike new and the electronics on the BMWs seem to have annoying glitches but then again maybe any new bike could have those issues tbh.. I’ll wait for the new KTM SA1390 or try the new V4 Multi.

@zexypupil they’re fantastic lights - not convinced they warrant that price tag but they have undoubtedly done an incredible job in the r&d, manufacture, and product quality - it’s top notch as always with their kit.
You have a LOT of options to tailor the lights to exactly how you like them, but I think a lot of people will go overboard and just end up with lights that are far too bright for general use.
As far as doing the job as lights go and lighting the way ahead in the dark, they are head and shoulders the brightest lights (in terms of reach and penetration) that I’ve ever experienced.
But how often do you actually ride at night, or at night when there is no available ambient light?
If you do, then these will be a God-send.
If like me most of your riding is daytime, then the DRL functions are brilliant. The ability to work with your indicators and hazard lights, horn, flashers etc is awesome
Yeah there are two problems the lights will address for me:
1. More indicators and amber DRLs = more visibility in traffic, around junctions etc.
2. While I do ride mostly during the day, when I do ride at night it is in the countryside in the UK or through France with starlight for company so spotting wild boar earlier will be good.
I couldn’t find another reputable supplier of lights that could address the amber DRLs, indicator mirroring, driving lights and long range main beam all in one light pod pair with the convenience of a tucked away canbus interface.
I too have concerns about the price, not just of these (it’s about a grand for D7s) and I really hope I don’t take a stone to the lens as they aren’t replaceable apparently. All in all though I cannot wait to get them fitted to my KTM so I can enjoy more night riding and relax just a little more around junctions.

The SOS fault: .... had the same on my 2021RT.... took Vines 2 attempts to fix and eventually just replaced the entire thing under warranty. Fine for just over a year now.
I think there’s now a fix as my bike got a firmware update last week and I’ve not had any issues since 🤞👍
You summed it up as you pulled into the petrol station. The GS has never done one thing outstandingly well… but does everything very well. Mines at 6k and I love it… even got used to the hamburger button now. 😂🎉
Getting my Honda Shadow Phantom valve clearance done this week! It will cost a about $650. Only difference is the service includes spark plugs, and all the oils changed.

Yet another great video! I don’t think I could live with that engine/exhaust sound. It’s terrible (IMHO). Sound is such an important part of an ICE motorcycle’s character and experience.

Paid £852 for 12k Valve check service Triumph tiger 900 gt pro. That was with a discount!! Was told would have been approx £1200 if they needed adjusting which they didn’t. To rub salt in wounds was also told generally they don’t need doing until 24k Service. Begs the question why bother at 12k. Servicing costs are becoming ridiculous. Looking at the new GSA for the new year. Looks Gorgeous IMO
Nice one Bruce. I think you’ve seen enough of me this year to know I’ve been absolutely loving mine! Yes, perhaps the engine is over refined but I can certainly live with that after touring on a more characterful Triumph 1200xe. The new GS is like a Rolls Royce of a ride in comparison.
I’ve been disappointed with my aftermarket BMW Ackropovic “silencer”, looks great but has made absolutely no difference to the exhaust sound. A waste of £900. I also opted out of adding the dynamic package as I wasn’t bothered about having a quickshifter. Little did I know that there is no dynamic/dynamic pro riding mode if you don’t have the quickshifter fitted. It can’t be fitted aftermarket by BMW as I have asked the question. Saying this the bike still flies in road mode. Other features I thought unnecessary and saved me money were the adaptive ride height, not necessary if you can flat foot the bike and the riding assistant safety features wasn’t for me personally, front & rear observations and regular lifesaver head checks are all part of my riding although I appreciate some would want these radar assists fitted. The break lights with integrated indicators, yeah, I should have them changed out. Foot pegs, no issues with my size 10 feet. Seat, gets uncomfortable after two hours riding. I think most seats do don’t they? I do use a comfortair cushion which really helps on longer journeys.
I bought into the service package up front which included the 6, 12, 18k and also the 600 mile running in service which I think was £1100 which I thought was reasonable.
Overall, I’m a very happy first ever GS owner, coming up to 12,000 since I bought it in March and it’s been a pleasure to ride. YEEHAA !

Your bike definitely was higher than mine, and your engine sounded totally different - mine was rattling like a good’un.
However, it’s just had a firmware update which reset everything on the bike. Now it seems to ride the same height as yours, and the engine also sounds a lot better - they did top up the oil though too😉
Exhaust - yeah it’s the Euro 6 compliance bollocks they’ve got going on in the headers/cat etc, means whatever slipon you put on will generally have little effect on the grunt/tone sadly.
I must admit though, I heard a few 1300GS’s with the new Jekyill & Hyde exhaust and they do sound fruitier - check out TrophyPete and ToroRides on instagram 👍

Hi Bruce, thank you for the review. I would add the electric screen is brilliant and the gearbox is still clunky and should be a lot better. So much so that I test rode the GS with ASA - auto box and fully manual. It’s brilliant,it’s smooth it changes gear like a Honda! In fact I liked it so much I’ve traded my 13 for the auto one. I would be interested in your thoughts on it so hoping you will take one out on the road soon.
I have a late 1250 and that has the whine and I mentioned it at the dealership (Shipley/Vertue) and the service manager told me that BMW had changed the supplier of the clutch basket has a revised gear teeth profile and that causes the whine.
I think that’s why BMW was hesitant to put an estimated amount of miles you can ride on their bikes. On my F800GT it starts counting up when you hit reserve. That in combination with your trip counter gives a good idea on how far you can still go.
BMW did that because the shape of the underseat tank on the F650/750/800 series is quite complex, and especially the route of the fuel into the engine, so estimating range to empty is much harder compared to a standard simple shape tank. The earlier models had a range reading but it was totally unreliable - I ran dry once on an F650GS with apparently 20 miles left - so they switched it to a count up. Having had several of these midrange F bikes I would also say that the fuel gauge and fuel economy rating on these bikes is quite unreliable as well.
@@MV-XD2 interesting. I have been riding an F800 since 2011 (8 years the ST and about 5 the GT now) and they have been very stable in fuel consumption. Around 4.1-4.2 for over 100k kms that I rode them combined.
@JeroenvanKleef I found when I lost the first bar on the fuel gauge I could get 10 litres in. Also when the fuel light comes on its definitely time to look for fuel.
@@chrishart8548 that doesn’t sound good no. First bar should be half the tank. When my fuel light comes on I still have about 60-80kms. Maybe it wasn’t properly calibrated?

I know what you mean by not engaging enough and too refined. That's why I sold my GS1250. I currently own a R12 ninet but miss the wind protection but is one of the most engaging bikes I've ridden. I tested the Mandello V100s on a couple of occasions and that's a wonderful mix of character and sports touring ability. I might test the GS1300 but I think that ultimately I would find it too slick for weekend blasts.
On my R1250GSA, when the range indicator reaches 0 the bike still has 5L in the tank. So there’s no reason to be nervous when you see that counter go down 😊

I watched a guy on u tube check and change shims 30 minutes each pot . Did they replace any shims ? If they did ask for them because they are expensive apparently and you can sell them on 👍
My XR had the same problem when I first bought it, it drove the mechanic mad trying to sort it out. In the end it turns out you have to unplug the ezycan

The valves on a boxer engine are easily accessible where as on an inline-4 they aren't.
5 years ago the valve clearance on my v-strom 1000XT cost me £630 (and they still didn't do the full job). The only service at the time that more expensive was the old 1260 Diavel, which was well into 4 figures (well, it was Desmo). Service costs over the years seems to have improved all round.
Had mine done on my v Strom 1000 for £800 a few months back.

You say it's a daft thing if a bike is too good, that's the whole reason I bought the only bike I regret selling, the MT-10.
The Triumph Speed Triple had my heels up my arse (Really high pegs for a naked) so I returned that to the dealer within half an hour, then I rode the S1000R Sport and it was amazing in every category to my mind, to the point it was clinical, brilliant but I didn't want one.
The MT-10 was more brutish and wild, power wheelies and slightly imperfect brakes that I had to get used to, that crossplane soundtrack with more low end power than the BMW and no tingly vibrations meant that the less refined but more characterful Yammy got my money and the only bike spot in my garage... Thirsty as a parched Camel though.
And now I ride a R1250GSA... What happened to me.
Haha I guessed 18.6 litres, not far off. Got to say Bruce I'm glad you like the bike so much. As a proper bike owner (Yamaha Tenere 😘) I do take the pee just a little from the GS crowd. But you can't fault the bikes really, and even I admit the 1300 looks WAY better than the old one. As for the new GSA, not a chance....

I test rode the R1300 GS. It had mahoosive amounts of power but felt agricultural and made a noise like a tractor’s tractor. Won’t buy one. May consider an R1250 GS. Unrelated to review, but also took a calimoto route up to see fanily in notts (am Bromley based), agree with you, some absolutely belting roads from Essex upwards, especially round Peterborough and into Leicestershire. Particular favourite around the Vale of Belvoir!
Have to say some of those long straight roads around Cambridgeshire Fens are pretty undulating, was out my seat a couple of times with the dips!
Hi Bruce, enjoying your video's, this one reminded me of a recent ride where I had gone 80 miles for a service at my nearest Moto Guzzi dealer and thought I could return home on one tank, the thing is with the V100S the range indicator gets to 50 miles then for some strange reason goes to zero then starts to count upwards, I thought it should be empty when a further 50 miles has elapsed so I decided to wait to get fuel at the garage nearest my home, now that proved to be a mistake as I literally ran out of fuel and the thing wouldn't start. Thankfully I had not long past a fuel station and was able to push it there and resume my journey. I think it was reading 44 miles and counting when it ran out, I personally think it would make more sense if it just counted down to zero.
Had a multistrada valve clearance service £1266 3 years ago. My 1250 gsa is £334
I asked my honda dealer how much for vfr valve clearance and they said 1500 lol... they did also say to double the interval to 32k though as they are so rarely out and the first 16k check is normally a complete waste of money, still... 1500 jesus

How bad is the gearchange clonk (with the clutch) in the first 3 gears? I rode a 3k mile demo bike last weekend and it was the worst gearbox I've ever used, altho 4-5-6 was like butter. Curious to know if this dealer demo was shagged or not as it put me right off the bike compared to my 1250 GS
I find the exact same as you - was nice and smooth for the first few hundred miles, but is now probably clunkier than the 1250 - however as you say, gears 4,5,6 are generally much smoother🤷♂️👍

Hi Mister Meldrew, the whining noise is most likely gear or clutch drive mesh. I have heard whining noises on lots of various vehicles as well as several motorbike I have owned over the years, sometimes from the pillion or back seat driver. 🤣🤣 Good review of the beamer though Bruce although it is a bike I will never own, way too expensive for me plus I am a short legged 70 year old. I will stick with my Suzuki GSX650F till I decide to give up.
I have owned 89 different bikes: Italian, Japanese(All brands), German and British ( None American so far!!). I tested everyone in this class (Including R1250GS)…before ordering the R1300GS …. It has not disappointed…. In balance as a do it all big bike in the Garage it’s brilliant. This is taking all factors in consideration but especially the riding experience. I probably would not change if I had a low mileage 1250, but it’s a no brainier if as me you are buying back into the brand, but the 1300 raises the bar in all main areas just read all the road tests …The luggage issue is the only disappointment, as I won’t see these until next year, so I am told but I have been given compensation by BMW UK.
You do know the secondary function on the burger button can be set for seat/grip heating? Once done just a long press on the burger and hey presto rocker switch does the heat. Very easy
@frankhumphrey6402 yep course, but they’d just done a firmware update which put the bike back into factory settings, and the wonder wheel doesn’t currently work so I can’t change the function of the rocker switch and it’s set to the default range control for adaptive cruise control

It doesn’t - once the headers go on it won’t pass a mot, so will have to changed for that, but it doesn’t effect the warranty.

Have you tried taking out the rubber inserts of the foot pegs. I think you will find them much better

What's the two up and general touring/wind protection comfort like?
Never ridden it 2-up, but I tour on it constantly with my touring company.
It’s fantastic, very agile and dynamic, loads more power than you need, can carry as much kit as you want without affecting performance, shaft drive so maintenance on tour is practically zero, and weather protection is absolutely fine - I’m 6’3” and over 20 stone and I have no issues.
Two up with that beard? Will never happen!

Did a tour on the Toro GS1300 just recently Bruce, one thing I did notice is that the QS probably needs some calibration. I found if I was light on the downshift the bike would blip the throttle for the down change but not change down, so would momentarily lurch forward on the blip, not a biggie as I adapted to being more purposeful on the down change, but I like to ride lightly on the controls especially with a pillion so this behaviour is not ideal. When I got home tried my 1250 and that doesn’t do it. Does yours do it? Or is it a a bike variance thing.?
The problem with fast is you can never get enough of what you don't want.
The cheap valve clearance service? Well, firstly is is only a twin, secondly those two cylinders are sooooooo accessible, unlike the engine out job on my old Kawasaki GTR1400. So cheap as chips Bruce? I’d say, fair and in reality they’d be pulling a fast one charging a lot more.

Thanks Mark, when I filmed this it was immediately after I picked the bike up from the service, so my dealership had only just created the technical enquiry with BMW HQ about the rear disc/brake issue.
I’ve since had their answer that they think replacing the rear DISC at 12,000 miles is reasonable with these new brakes?!
I’ll be doing a vid on this in due time obviously, and will have to pay to have the rear disc changed when it goes in for the 18,000 mile service next week 🤦♂️
@@teapotone their response is crazy and insulting, did you see anything on the 911 scan about the ABS pump being faulty like Mark Hooton from Cymarc Bike Parts?
Sadly no I didn’t, I was fully expecting that to be the case but it wasn’t 🤷♂️
I completely agree with you, it’s bull💩that the disc should need changing at 12,000 miles with normal riding - they actually warned me at 6,000 miles that the rear disc was getting low on wear levels! 🤦♂️🤷♂️
They are probably made of the same materials as the ktm camshaft! @@teapotone
@@teapotone I've just had the 12,000 mile service carried out on my 1250GS and they advised to replace the rear disc & pads (which I got them to do). I must admit I was surprised.
Nice, but when are beemer gonna bring a new rs model out with better wind protection and the 1300 engine and a bigger fuel tank(just 3 litres would be nice)?
Is that gear lever really plastic?
Tip: always ride a new bike until the tank is dry, that way you know your real range. Get to know your range and use an odo as a fuel gauge.
Would you upgrade from 1250 if you were not UA-camr and just regular rider?
Makes no difference to me, I’m still a regular rider so yes I would’ve bought a 1300
25K km on my 1300 now. It’s my 9th GS and on a functional level probably the best one. I find the riding experience…sterile, where’s the joy? The front “sports” brake is disappointing, it needs some heat braked into it before it really bites. Talking about build quality: plastic pedals, really??? I’m on my second high comfort seat, the first had a broken seat pan. Seat comfort is BAD. The electronic suspension(sports suspension, I’m 6.6 ) is starting to get softer. Pint on part of the frame is scoffed by mij knees. Maintenance is more expensive than my previous 1250’s. Will buy a new bike for 2026(this one will have done 60K by then) but I wonder if it is going be a GS again.
Ducati Multistrada V4S service costs every 9000 miles or 2 years an oil service £240, yearly inspection if you don't do the mileage for an oil service £80, the big valve service is at 36000 miles I expect this to be a big one but the other savings should make up for it.
Who would think servicing on a V4 Ducati would be cheaper than a boxer twin.😂
doing the Valve check should be so cheap from the placment of them but it is a costly sum for most bikes got a few more miles for my Tiger yet

I don’t like the way it looks personally, and I don’t think it really makes any difference when you’re actually riding the bike, in terms of visibility.
My friend sold his 2005 GS 1200 with 85k miles on it back at the start of the summer for one of these and he's had a fair few issues with it since. It's his daily for work so it's let him down and he's regretting the decision as of now. Must be said all the problems are technology based not mechanical
Aye I expected issues to be honest as it’s a completely new bike - I’d never usually buy the first generation of a new bike, usually wait at least 6 months for them to find and sort out all the bugs.
But I thought I was in a good position to document any issues and let folks know about them 👍
I just paid £900 for a Triumph Tiger 900 12k service which is also valves.
Found the engine brilliant, noisy though, gear box great compared with the 1250 but riding position just a bit cramped. Having the decat headers Bruce will you be having it Hilltopped.😊
40mph is the modern day unofficial national limit, didn’t you know! General public feel they can drive comfortably without concentrating on anything at that speed whilst frustrating proper drivers.
I took a ride on my 1300 without earplugs the other day, and oh boy, I never had a engine sound so bad mechanically speaking. It sounds like is going to explode at any minute. Tje sounds are diverse! You have winning, rattles, and miscellaneous sounds everywhere. It is also a sound that appears to be coming from the cluch, since when I apply presure the sound changes. It sounds like 2 metal plates rubbing. And my oil was 1 liter down in 2k miles.the dealer told me I was riding "too gently."lol. She runs fine otherwise! I guess the solution is never ever ride without earplugs again! Lol

When I’ve had them long enough to do a fair review of them
Why do you hang on to lower gears at higher speeds. On wide open roads at 60 mph and you are 4th. With all that low down grunt if you use 6th it would improve your fuel consumption no end.
Easier acceleration/deceleration engine braking etc. I’ll do 60mph in 3rd most of the time, hardly need to touch the brakes, just roll on roll off, effortlessly overtake, and you’ll pull up quicker in an emergency if you need to - especially mid corner.
Still average 55mpg.

@akungwelly heating issues aren’t an issue for motovlogging as we have the air being pushed through/around the camera when we ride.
I’ve just bought the Action 5 actually so will be trying it out over the next few months, along with the Hero 13 and the new Ace Pro 2 when it arrives 👍
