  • Here’s a lovely little slice of Bassetlaw that sits right on the border with Derbyshire. I was thoroughly impressed by this little place because of one feature in particular - the gorgeous River Poulter - which here runs in channels as it snakes its way through the village.
It is controlled in how it flows here because in years past, the river was truly what kept this village going, owing to the fact that the power the water provided to the local mill. That mill is now derelict after being used as both a corn mill and a cotton mill before becoming a restaurant in later years.
Perhaps one building that locals don’t even know about would be the care home that’s hidden away behind the trees in the East of the village, which not only harbours a lake which collected water from the river, but was also home to a very important man - a colonel no less - in Samuel William Welfitt. A street is named after him here.
To the East, Cuckney Hay Wood disguises a vast area which was once a quarry which has recently reopened after Tarmac merged with LaFarge to use it as a training centre - dubbed the National Skills and Safety Centre. It hasn’t been open long either, only in February of 2020 did it open its doors and it did so with the aid of HRH Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge.
As Bassetlaw goes, this one for me, is right up there. I’d love to sit on the side of the Poulter on a hot summers day with a couple of drinks from the Jug & Glass - and I’m led to believe the locals do that here! Who can blame them? This is the pretty little NETHER LANGWITH.

    NETHER LANGWITH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    - Langwith Lodge was for many years one of only two convalescent homes for diabetics in the country. Most of the patients were elderly and often dealing with complications of diabetes which nowadays is treated and managed completely differently to back then. Sometimes there'd be younger patients newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and learning to live with the condition
    - The making of wicker baskets and pottery was common at Langwith Lodge, these were activities to keep the residents occupied whilst being rehabilitated

Used to pass through many times when parents took us to Clumber Park and you're right, during the summer The Jug & Glass is very busy. Never seen Langwith Mill but on my bucket list now. Thanks again.
