This, do they think we stumbled across this video randomly and needed to know the difference between mono and binural? Not even a fair comparison considering most(literally almost all) music is in stereo, not mono.
@@poppinlochnesshopster3249 Yeah! They should have used more microphones and record the way they use to do (one mic close to each voice and instrument, wich record into it's own mono track) - then they make a standard production with mixing and mastering. That's what they should start with - then switch to the binarual recording. That will really show how much better the binarual recording is. I guess they just made it simple - they recorded everything in binarual (wich is ironically much easier than recording it the standard way, since nothing more than 2 microphones and a stereo recorder/camera is needed). To "simulate" the standard bad sound, they just took the sound from one of the 2 microphones and mix it out on both channels (or just mixed the stereo channels together), on the first part of the audio track. But as you say - it's not really a fair comparison, because even the standard recordings are stereo for the most part. Also - one part of what makes this recording better, is the stereo information. Stereo is recorded naturally by using 2 omnidirectional microphones with a distance in between (sometimes with a dummy head in the middle to simulate the effect of the head). The stereo on the standard production on the other hand is just faked by take a mono track and convert it to a stereo track, then adjust volume between left and right channel before it's put into the mix - that doesn't sound very natural, since there is no time difference between channels as it will be in real life (a sound coming straight from the left for example, will more sound like you have a faulty headphone/speaker on your right side, rather than the sound is actually coming from the left). Make the whole sound track mono, will not show this important difference.
You appear to be completely missing the concept of binaural music, which is explicitly a single point recording location with reflector features mimicking the human ears to add full spherical information into the recording.

Not just music- why isn't EVERYTHING recorded this way?!?!?! Binaural audio is so freaking cool! The microphones aren't even that expensive! The Free Space from 3dio is only $500 USD, compare that with some other high end ones that are much more expensive!
also, HIFI is usually made for reproduction through speakers, so they place microphones a couple metres apart to record an acoustical performance. it approximates the distance between home speakers in a good setup. technically, that's a binaural recording too. the difference is, when made like this, for headphones, the microphones are much closer. it is only suited for live music, though. when recording for example a rock band in a studio, there are dozens of inputs from various microphones, instruments, a drum kit can have 4-5 dedicated mics, one for every piece of kit, etc. would be an interesting experiment though to try.
Binaural recordings are intended for listening through headphones, since using the same recording on a home speaker system would cause distortions from cross-talk between the channels. Since there's a bigger market for loudspeakers than headphones, most recordings will be done in the traditional stereo format. Although I agree, it would be nice to have more recordings done this way, but it requires more effort on the studios. Maybe iTunes could do something like a binaural library or a way to toggle between stereo recordings and binaural. If more people are switching to binaural sound, then that might give studios an incentive to actually do those type of recordings -- because I'm pretty sure lots and lots of people are now using portable audio in this day and age.

+MrUnknownPunk Because music most of the time not played by headphones, this only works for headphone. If you play it with speaker it would have a too much reverb effect, making the sound blurry, not as clear as usual recording.
I can't believe how amazing the soundscape is on this. i wish binaural would become something bigger in the music world its an amazing stereo image that can't be recognized by the general public
What I find so magical - switching to the binaural recording completely eliminates the room echo, even if I only listen to a single channel (left or right). What a wonderful song, thanks!
I wish all songs have a binaural version so we don't have to buy expensive audiophile grade earphones with vast soundstage to produce this kind of sound.
Jonathan Rae Crisanto I have to say with high performance headphones this is such a wonderful experience though. It will drastically improve headphone performance but with poor detail and response and a lot of distortion it's not going to sound as good as supposed to be.
LOL!! You don't get good sound just because you buy " audiophile grade earphones with vast soundstage" - it's as simple as shit in = shit out. Information that was never captured during the recording and lost during mastering of the music, will not come back just because you get a good playback system. People who buy expensive sound system just wastes their money in most cases (except for those who listen to classical music, where you can find a few good recordings). But again (as I wrote before) - it's all about profit. The producers make good money on their crap and that's all they care about. Also when it comes to audiophiles - they will often hear an improvement as they change or upgrade their sound system (some of it isn't even a real improvement, but just placebo - for example when it comes to speaker cables). That's enough for them to continue chasing "good sound". Those improvements is so tiny compared to what they would get with a better recording. But since they are missing a reference for how it should sound, they just carry on. It's like moving centimeters when your goal is still 2 kilometers away.

Ckcorynthiohn Hey I love this video, particularly the ideas concerning binaural beats gamma . Another resource I also found useful for memory increasing exercises was Corbandy Binaural Beats Crusher - search google if you like
Really nice. Kudos to all on this one - the Artists (performers & composers and all that entails) and those who recorded the audio, schlepped cables (and whatever else the project required), begged for, borrowed, or had stolen just to get the gig done...and did it with passion. Solid.
I didn't notice a strong 3D effect. When the piano player sang he sounded like directly in front, when he was actually far to the right. Maybe it's the room's acoustic properties.
I guess it depends on what headphones you use. The pianist sounded off to the side for me (where he was). It isn't the strongest I agree but it is there.
qwasd0r It also strongly depends on each person's corpulence (head, shoulders, torso...), and for binaural recording, they usually use an average dummy for that (although, not sure if they used one for this recording). So it is not really surprising that the rendering may sound diferent for you, guys :-)
Using HD800s, E70, or W50 I can not only tell where piano is from, other instruments and singers' positions are easy to tell to. It's actually creepy when I listen to this at night before sleep. So I guess you need more accurate headphones.
You need quite an elaborate (and expensive) set up to record binaural. The acoustics in which the recording is made need to be very good as well. It has actually been used quite a lot over the last 40 years or more in recording chamber music, jazz and other acoustic music. Lots of "audiophile" recordings use binaural set-ups. It is sometimes also used to mix a little room atmosphere back into a mix where each instrument is recorded onto a separate channel. I actually work at a venue where concerts are recorded that way. The thing is, it can only be used with performances that are recorded live. But in a way it has always been a bit of a thing, just not for music that is recorded in parts and then mixed together.
Frauhofer made is possible to compress 21:2-Sound (Cinema DTS) or 7.1 (DTS) to Binaural Stereo. So this sounds like a Cinema. The Sound comes from a circle around you. But with Binaural you hear the distance and height from the source. If you hear binaural music on streets you cannot differ the music and the reality.Binaural sounds a little bit faked, if your hear it with loud-speaker. For recording you need a human head and a complexive ear-shell.
***** 5.1 and 7.1 headsets are pretty much snake oil any way, regarding sound binaural recordings (especially the barber shop demo on YT) proves that you have 2 ears and so 2 speakers can be all that is required for fully directional audio with headphones. You shouldn't need 5.1 headsets or Dolby upmixing which fakes 3D sound which as with any type of simulation pales in comparison to the proper way. This is why binaural should be more of a thing in mainstream media, music, games and movies because quite frankly it's more than capable of being much better than even surround sound speakers. Once again the barber shop demo proves the insane accuracy and shows you just how convincing a normal pair of headphones (not 5.1 headsets or anything) can be with binaural. It's actually quite frightening!
I've watched and listened so many times - with so many pairs of headphones and earphones. Anytime I want to be reminded of how great music can sound, I dip back in. And everytime it's just a treat. I would pay a hefty sum for an album (binaural and acoustic, natch)

the backup singers voice when she says marry me 😍😍
Simlply awesome! So sweet and emotional...
The WHOLE video I was just hoping and praying someone would smash that huge gong in the back. Other than that disappointment, this video is freakin' amazing.
Can we just take a moment to say how beatiful the co-ordination and vocals are.
There gonna get lots of views just because I'm gonna re listen so many times. Lol
Ckcorynthiohn Provided you have open backed headphones, you can get a similar effect for all your music with crossfeed: www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_dsp_meiercf
Ckcorynthiohn Hey I love this video, particularly the ideas concerning binaural beats gamma
. Another resource I also found useful for memory increasing exercises
was Corbandy Binaural Beats Crusher - search google if you like
Amazing sound! Really lovely performance. Thanks!
All songs should be recorded like this!
I miss this video. It's been 5-6 years I think since my last listen to this. ♥
Sounds like it comes straight out of little big planet
+beep813 I was thinking the exact same thing!!!
Really nice. Kudos to all on this one - the Artists (performers & composers and all that entails) and those who recorded the audio, schlepped cables (and whatever else the project required), begged for, borrowed, or had stolen just to get the gig done...and did it with passion. Solid.
pure musical bliss
wonderful! overwhelmed by this style recording and quality of music. Great stuff. Make more!
How does this only have 25k views...
I'm think I'm in love with Sarah Bateson's voice (she's the one in the vibraphone). You hear it so clear in the left ear near the end.
Read the posting notes. The focus moves with the Camera. H800's here and the recording isn't bad.
qwasd0r It also strongly depends on each person's corpulence (head, shoulders, torso...), and for binaural recording, they usually use an average dummy for that (although, not sure if they used one for this recording). So it is not really surprising that the rendering may sound diferent for you, guys :-)
Using HD800s, E70, or W50 I can not only tell where piano is from, other instruments and singers' positions are easy to tell to. It's actually creepy when I listen to this at night before sleep. So I guess you need more accurate headphones.
this made me tear up wow its like its giving you the feelings even more expierience add that binaural mode damn
Amazing performance, amazing technology. How is binaural not a 'thing' yet ?? Everything that has a headphone option should have binaural option too.
They do use it in a lot of songs but not very noticeable. I've notice that they use it a lot on Battlefield 4 with a ps4 it's awesome
***** one word 3ds
I've watched and listened so many times - with so many pairs of headphones and earphones. Anytime I want to be reminded of how great music can sound, I dip back in. And everytime it's just a treat. I would pay a hefty sum for an album (binaural and acoustic, natch)

there's no 3D sound but it sounds wonderful!
There is no what m8?
Unlike others here, I actually love how the recording begins in mono. It's like starting off colour blind and suddenly seeing full colour for the first time. The timing of it is perfect too.
Is there a soundcloud/iTunes of this?
Peter and Kerry- I don't know
This song and arrangement reminds me of Low Roar. Great song and sing!
you should have said the 1st minute is mono recording cause I was about to say it's not binuaral.
nth2tell It said it in the top left corner that it was Mono. Lol
Lovely song and great sound recording. Love it!
Anyone else here from the Ultimate Headphone Test video?

Very good. $400 kind of good lol.
@@corbinbender5122 mine is $100 dollar kind of good (corsair hs70) to my untrained ears it sounds quite amazing. I have read reviews by people who are audiophiles who have said the sound is great for the price though.

Morph the names together and you get Kety Perry
Keter Perry*
I too came here for the 3D sound and stayed for the music and lyrics. On repeat now all day. Love it.

Please. More.
Just art, arte en esencia...
I've loved this performance ever since I saw it around a year ago.
