Oh boy, a review of two of my favorite JRPGs of all time! I sure hope Merry likes them as much as I do and I don't have to disagree with him *_on the internet!_*
    That would be terrible.
    _Oh no._

My friend loved this game, but I never got around to playing it. Looks like a visually pretty cool game, but definitely not my cup of tea. I can totally see why people liked it so much, for a gba game it looks amazing.

The first game is still one of my most favorite games of all time. On the other hand, I'm similar, in that I never finished the 2nd one. I didn't like it. I always felt like an oddity because of that, as everyone usually says the 2nd game is great. But I only ever liked the first one.

I pretty much agree with your assessments. I love the games and hold a lot of nostalgia for them, but I don't think I've ever finished TLA more than once. Too much bloat. And even the first one is hard to revisit with its pages and pages of unnecessary dialogue. I still can't believe that no game since has ever really copied the djinn system though. It's such a fun and unique set of mechanics.

That's one of the main reasons that I've never played these games myself as even on emulators, that dialogue and backtracking wears on you pretty quickly. I've noticed that some mods are addressing this and even overhauling parts of the game to reduce the bloat and grind too so I hope that it'll be enough.

Huh. See when I replay the Golden Sun duology, which I do every few years, to me it feels like I'm playing through Golden Sun _to get to_ The Lost Age. That's the really good one imo. Having the whole world to explore and experience is intensely satisfying to me. When I have to go somewhere it doesn't feel like pointless backtracking it feels like, yeah, if you want to go somewhere you'll need to travel to get there, and you'll have to revisit places. To me it enhances the feeling that this an interconnected, whole world. It's not a designed game world where everything is laid out in the most convenient, streamlined way possible. It's the world as you see it on your map and if you go to one end of a continent to do a dungeon and the next place you have to go is on the other side of the continent where you came from well, yeah that's just how it is. I'll fully admit that the random encounters can get tedious and having to reapply items/psynergy to repel them every time they end is obnoxious though.
Similarly to the dialogue, I like it. Sure, sometimes where it's just needlessly repetitive I wish that was cut. Apparently it's a cultural thing in Japan to have everyone repeat the same thing to make sure everyone's on the same page or something like that? It definitely feels awkward and annoying in English though. But when it's not repetitive, when it's just information that isn't strictly related to the main plot, I'm fine with it. I LIKE Kraden. Yes old man, talk to the werewolf elder about his people, form a theory about how people in this town became werewolves based off of the properties of the world as we know them. Rock on! It all makes them games feel like you're exploring the world, like you're discovering things. That while individual continents may be mapped out and known to those that live there, and some people might know of the other continents of the world and roughly what they look like, *you* and the party are doing something very rare in actually traveling to all of them, learning about all of them, seeing all that Weyard is. It is a true globetrotting adventure.
I love it. I love it so much.

I'm ok witu a 4th game never coming out. 3 sucked and 2 wrapped up the story nicely. Even if the developers said that the end of TLA was only the beginning of the story it doesnt really matter.
