Abused Ion Audio Block Rocker repair

  • A friend of mine who is in the navy asked me to look at this so he could use it in the gym. I decided to take it on as a bit of an interesting challenge.
    This thing was used on a ship so has been exposed to salt water and also it looks like it's been dropped from some height as one of the corner shells was heavily dented and the transformer and woofer were completely detached.
    I got it going in the end by re-mounting the transformer and speaker, cleaning up the boards and bridging any corroded tracks and replacing a few corroded capacitors and resistors. The battery appeared to be dead but it seemed to gradually come back to life after leaving the unit plugged in for a couple of days.
    The iPod dock was too far gone to repair unfortunately. I ended up disconnecting the wires that connected it to the preamp board because it was causing some interference.
    The addition of Bluetooth would have been cool if it worked properly but I was getting too much RF interference so I need to work on better filtering and shielding. I decided not to add bluetooth to this unit but I have an idea for another video that will hopefully be up in the next few weeks.

    so i got mine for xmas three years back or so, basic job rocker...
    all was well until recently, it started tripping out with an RF distortion if that makes sense... Blue Tooth or radio makes it go nuts at any volume greater than mid way. is she worth fixing or taking to a shop for repair with a bench charge of 50 bucks...

    My battery tests at 12.5 VDC but the unit doesn't play off battery, only 110VAC. All the LED lights are on when the power cord is disconnected (e.g. the 3 green and the one red LED). What gives ? I thought either bad battery connections or blown in line fuse to the battery but I don't think so (how would the LEDs be able to light ?).Any clues ?

    Hi not sure if you can help. Got a block rocker only just two years old which is getting hot and then distorting. Been told could be dust causing overheating and to try cleaning with compressed air. Would you agree or any other ideas.

    • @reddragon27284
      @reddragon27284  9 років тому

      It seems unlikely that dust would cause much of an issue on something like this. Does it only get hot when you're playing it very loud for a long time or will it get hot without any audio signal fed to it?
      Without knowing which component(s) are getting hot it's hard to say what exactly is wrong. Does it get hot on battery power or only on AC power?
      Cleaning it certainly wouldn't hurt but I wouldn't hold your breath on it fixing your problem.

    I have an Ion Block Rocker, the power is fine (though the battery is dead), and the bluetooth connects finem even the radio seems to find frequencies, but I have absolutely zero sound from the speaker. It gives the classic "pop" when it's swtiched on and voltage is supplied to it, so pretty sure the speaker itself isn't damaged, but I cannot get any output from it whatsoever, any ideas?

    • @reddragon27284
      @reddragon27284  7 років тому +1

      Matt Canning I don't know off hand I'm afraid and I don't have the unit to hand as it wasn't mine. Best bet if you have it is to take the original fuse to an electronics supply place like Maplin. If I had to guess I'd probably go with a 20mm 1A 250V glass fuse. It might even say on the unit itself. You should ALWAYS replace a fuse with the correct value to prevent risk of fire.

      Whoops, yeah that'll kill it! I assume you're on 240V/230V (UK/Europe).
      At the very least you have probably blown a fuse. You MIGHT be lucky and get away with replacing the internal fuse but that is unlikely.
      You've likely blown more than a fuse. The power supply is probably screwed. It'll probably need new regulators and possibly new rectifier diodes and maybe even filter capacitors. Worst case and highly probable is that the primary on the power transformer is open circuit. They have an internal, non-replicable, thermal fuse.
      To be honest unless you know a hobbyist who's handy with a soldering iron I would cut your losses and learn from the experience.
      Sorry it's not what you want to hear.

      pookiewood I discovered later that using an audio isolation transformer between the output of the Bluetooth module and the input of the amplifier eliminated pretty much all of the noise. These are also known as ground loop isolators and can be picked up very cheaply.

      RedDragonUKTech I'll look further into that. Thanks! However first I have to get it working again. Lol. I think something got shorted and now the battery won't power it. Another issue that happened is that it was in my wife's car and I guess it bounced around with the plug still in and damaged the panel. Now it doesn't turn on at all. I may try to make a new panel out of a sheet of hard plastic and try to figure out where the short is. I do know I need a new few and at one point used an auto parts fuse that allowed it to power up before things took a turn for the worst.

      It’s quite simple really, you undo the screws - it opens. I have to be honest it was very simple so I didn’t include it. My thinking was that anyone who is likely to be working on the electrical side of this should already have the skills to open it.

    Hey man, I am hoping you will read this. I myself trow freeparties/raves(the basic principe is no loss and no gain the only money we get from donations goes into equipment)
    I can get an ION Tailgater for rather cheap the only thing is that it is broken.
    I was wondering what could be wrong with it( it think either a fuse is blown or the transformer is broken)
    Can you maybe confirm/deny this?
    Thank you for your time

      Hi,
      It's hard to diagnose the problem without more information but there's a few things you can try.
      The first thing would be a visual inspection, look for signs of damage. Also see if there are any signs of life at all such as a power LED. If there are you can usually (but not always) rule out fuses and the transformer. You can check inside the unit (UNPLUG FIRST!!!!!) to see if anything is loose or obviously blown.
      If you know your way around a multimeter then use that to check the transformer and fuses and you can check things like the bridge rectifier.
      Anything further than that would require to have the unit plugged in while you have it open which could be lethal if you're not familiar with electronics.
      Hope this is useful.
      Cheers :)

    • @hazzzee
      @hazzzee 9 років тому

      floryzzz, check the battery make sure it is not that dead that it draws to much of a current and blows the fuse, (black socket where mains cable goes in, if battery dead take it out and charge on a regular battery charger). If the thing is still not working test the transistors after you have checked the transformer for an output, this is rather a cheap nasty bit of kit, but then again, nothing to expensive to put right.
