As a mixer on many docos I'm always dealing with dialog EQ. My tip is to start with subtraction not boost. Lav mics and boom mics in roomy environments have ugly chest or room resonance, usually around 200hz. With a narrow notch (bell) reduce that frequency first. It is amazing how that first step increases clarity. You can tune the frequency by first adding boost and sweeping the frequency till you hear the resonance of the frequency that is making the sound muddy. Then reduce gain at that frequency. Next step can be high pass to filter rumble then play with boost in higher frequencies. You will use less hi boost when you've tidied up the mud first. Also be aware you might need a tight notch around sibilance which sits around 6khz. Often a specific 'de-ess' plugin might be best used to fix this.
Yup, totally agree. I have a similar process. This is geared for someone who doesn’t want to do audio work and wants a quick result. The non-audio nerds. 😜
Thanks, Jason. That really helped. I appreciate that the advice wasn't too technical as I can get lost quickly. This was something I can implement immediately.
Thanks for your great tutorials. I think for most of us, audio is the biggest area for improvement and is often overlooked or not given the priority it deserves.

Excellent. Really helpful. I'll try this on my next video. Do you also have a video on removing room echo? On the video I'm currently rendering out for posting, I spoke into my computer mic in a room with some echo. Want to clean up the audio for clarity and for echo removal. Thanks!

Wow! Well your the man to know! - actually I've been subscribed to your channel for ages - and I've been stuck on technical motorcycle videoing problems for ages too and the latest has been the audio inside the helmet and wind noise, so, thank you.@@JasonYadlovski
Voice Isolation would help a ton with your wind noise. I’d also try to get a good dead cat for your microphone if you could, that will help get a cleaner recording. If you decide to use voice, isolation, you might want to leave a little bit of background noise in there, it might sound weird if it’s only your voice with no wind at all in the background. But maybe not. I’ll have a video coming out soon on how to keep some background noise using voice, isolation, but lower the volume of that background noise. 😜
I just put a video out about removing background noise using voice isolation, you can check it out here if you want: ua-cam.com/video/tqgUA44Nd9k/v-deo.html
This is great. There's one UA-camr whom I have watched stream for a few years now where it sounds just like this in their streaming videos. They have voiceover gaming streams and during the streams could definitely stand to have an EQ applied to their voiceover. I'm guessing they have a lav mic for stream and something a little more robust for regular videos. Or maybe they just didn't figure out how to apply the EQ in their live streaming software.
Thanks! Yeah, EQ is the one audio tool everyone should learn. It's going to do the best to fix bad sounding audio....not including background noise of course. 😜
@@JasonYadlovski I'm guessing that maybe they just either cannot apply an EQ to their voiceover in the capture software or they don't know how. Not sure which capture software they use for their streams.

Generally I’m going to find harsh frequencies and make cuts. This technique is really for someone who wants to do as little as possible. But it will increase the clarity and sometimes you need to do it. It really depends on the type of clip and what it sounds like.
Great tip to simply adjust. Question: at the moment I am working on scenes shot in a church. The echo is very strong and I find it hard to adjust this. Any tips/tricks????????
Thanks! You could try using voice isolation if you have the studio version. But most the time it doesn’t work so well on reverb, but to could help. There’s a great plug-in from Waves called DeReverb that works good on reverb. You could also try an expander or gate, it’s not gonna remove the river, but it can help make it less noticeable between words or phrases.
