Hi two suggestions about chips. 1. Have you tried opening up the slot inside the cover by packing a thin piece of wood under the sides where it's bolted to the machine to increase the size of the slot? 2 If you drilled a hole ( not to large, start small and increase slowly) in the end of the cover so that air would low in front the blind end this might clear any build up at the blind end. If it didn't work you could always close it with a piece of duct tape or plastic glued over the hole.
Not tried anything like that to be honest. I try not to mess about with machinery. But I may give it a go to see if it allow it for better chip extraction, thanks👍
Hi Tomasz good review well covered. The snipe issue occurs on lots of thicknessers, just cut the wood over size in length so you cut it off later. If you have a compressor keep blasting the area that's a problem with clogging now and again so it doesn't get chance to clog. Enjoyed Tony
I just read the manual of the DH330: "The dust collector must comply with the following: − fitting the diameter of the dust extraction connector: − 64 mm or − 102 mm; − air flow volume ≥ 460 m3 /h; − vacuum at the dust extraction connector ≥ 530 Pa; − air speed at dust extraction connector ≥ 20 m/ s. Operation without a dust collector is only advisable: − outdoors; − for short-term operation (up to a maximum of 30 minutes); − when wearing a dust respirator. If no dust collector is used chips will built up inside the machine housing, and on the cutter knives in particular. These built-up chips cause the planed surface to become rough. Therefore the chips need to be removed periodically
@@CasualDIY Since the DeWalt 735X isn't available in Europe, I am considering the Metabo, the Triton you mention and also the Makita 2012. Thanks for the review. Tell me please what is the thinnest board I could expect the Metabo to produce? Will it take material down to 2mm? What of the Triton would that do it? Cheers.
None of them will go that low, I can't remember exactly but I think its about 1 cm. It should be in the description of the tool if you look it up online. However that is not a problem. Just put a board inside like a melamine chip board that is flat and slippery. then that will serve you as a new bed of the machine and will raise your material enough so you can do those thin pieces.
What is the max height of boards you can run through it? And are the blades disposable or do you have to sharpen them like in the Dewalt 733? And how long do the blades last?
Was looking at this and the Triton, saw snipe issues with the Triton caused because the cutting head has the hight adjusted by two central screws. The Metabo is the same, but has that locking arm. Does that in your experience give a better stability to the cutting head reducing snipe, have you even experienced snipe with the Metabo?
No difference to be honest and I almost never use the locking arm. Snipe will happen regardless on most machines. You can reduce it with correct technique and setup.
@@CasualDIY Some snipe can be caused by the cutting head rocking when the wood leaves the front roller and is only under the exit roller so the cutting blades are tilted down a little. Do you find there any movement or rocking of the cutting head you can feel when it's not running? A lot of thicknesser designs are the same with just 2 height screws either end of the cutting head, even the Dewalt 733. Others have 4 height screws one in each corner, I'm just wondering if that design produces less snipe.
Cuts wood as normal so nothing exciting to show really. For the trolley I made a video, here's the link ua-cam.com/video/OHYrdtfWGJ8/v-deo.html Thanks for watching 👍
Good review Tomas ,I see a space on the wall for the smallest Charnwood chip extractor .Had one for 9 years run my table saw and planer /thicknesser off it ,everything else on a vacuum /cyclone.
Hi mate! Great video! I just got mine and after few hardwood boards the finish is not perfect. :/ Could it be that the knives are already dull? And when I try to plane boards bellow 2cm rollers seem to block and the board is not moving. Can you recommend a solution? Thank you!
No the blades will not get dull that quick. Although don't expect finish like after sanding with grit 100. Take small shallow passes. Or the last pass make it just so it skims the board. That's how I get a decent looking board. I think there is a thickness limit on this machine, can't remember what it was tho. But I think it would be lower than 2cm. Try to put an extra board that will act as a new table. Best for that are melamine boards as they are "slippery" and flat. That should elevate the board you trying to sort out high enough. Hope this helps. Check the rollers if they are clean and not clough up with saw dust. Also check the tension belt, maybe its damaged or something.
What kind of stuff do you run through this? Given that you need a jointer and thicknesser to flatten stock on three sides, plus the table/track saw for the 4th side? I saw you have the Titan Planer, but with a 204mm width?
Rough sawn boards up to 15cm wide, mostly Ash and Oak. The the Titan planer is about that. Which means I'm very limited to what I can do with it. The Metabo is great, but the planer.... not so good
That height guide on the right, do you know the steps in mm? The scale is in inches but on the left it's mm but no definition of the exact steps. It's a feature i haven't seen on any other planer!
The smaller the passes the better overall. 1mm wont be a problem. That's how much I usually take off at a time when working with softwoods. Hardwoods I usually go 0.5mm at a time.

@@CasualDIY This video shows you how to do the upgrade to your machine and obtain amazing planning results. ua-cam.com/video/Fya9Ago7RNk/v-deo.html See this video to understand the different types of rotary cutter. ua-cam.com/video/UurAyAOfzGs/v-deo.html You will get the best result if you choose a cutter that has blades set on an angle and the Shelix helical cutter has this. It is an expensive upgrade, but it makes a big difference and you will not need to replace the rotary cutter for many years, and remember each blade has four cutting edges. You can buy a helical cutter for your machine, but I haven't researched if Shelix makes one that will give best results. You may have to import. The angled blade also gives best results for wood that has a changing grain pattern. Good luck.
I bought this Metabo, but it spits out quite a lot of chips from the in-feed end when it's being used. Just wondered if this is a problem you've had too?
You need a good chip extractor connected to limit that issue. Sometimes when the black plastic extraction attachment gets blocked then that issue may happen as well.
Hey Tomasz, I'm looking at getting this over the Triton. Mainly due to less snipe due to the cutterhead being more stable. The only thing that worries me is Triton runs off a normal plug, the metabois 16A and I keep seeing runs off a 16 amp plug. Did you have any issues with it in the UK and what circuit was it running off? Dedicated or just a normal ring circuit with an adapter?
Had it in my single bay garage with normal wiring. I was running with no issues however it was dimming the lights for a second when switched on. The power lead is massive, it does pack a lot of power. However never had any issues.

@@aevoguitars2576 if you go with the full capacity you will always run to the danger of the board getting wedged inside the planer. Personally I would not recommend it.
Hi. I am also owner of DH 330 and after leveling regulations practically each time I am getting 0,1-0,2-0,3 mm deeper cut at the end of material and this is started ca 7 cm from the edge of material This is exactly started when material is leaving first pushing roller. I asked Metabo service what to do They said this is normal with this machine and this part has to be cut out from planed material as lost. Do you see something similar ? Thx and Kind Regards Marek
Do you think the blocking starts in the "funnel" of the chip extractor, and then backs up? if this is the case, have you drilled a couple of 1-2mm holes in then (narrow) of the funnel so there is a constant suction from the actual end, and with this happening would that stop the build up of debris within the extractor? If this fails. just use a hot glue gun to seal the holes.
Depends on type of wood really. Sometimes it gets blocked where the plastic funnel meets the body of the machine. And sometimes it gets blocked at the narrow end of the plastic funnel.
Helpful review. Thanks. How often do you have to sharpen the blades? Do you DIY or send them off for sharpening? Maybe you buy a new set when they become nicked or dull.
Yes that could be the case. I was thinking of getting a chip extractor high volume the ones you can mount on a wall but not decided yet. Just the space limitations are an absolute nightmare 🤔
I think, if your Vac is a decent one, you’re good to go as far as the hose diameter is above 50 mm. If I remember it right, Metabo suggests for the DH330 58 mm or bigger.
Lol yes I do projects. I don't tend to post them on UA-cam as it takes far longer to record it, edit it etc. And then usually no one watches it lol a lot of projects are repeated so it's pointless to do 10 videos of making the same cabinet, side table etc.
Another great revue mate. Looks like you got a good machine there. I know chip collection is a problem on most thicknessers, I made a larger one for mine. Stay safe.
Hi, I've ordered this planer the other day in part thanks to your recommendation and available etc. Not been delivered yet though. I saw this video ua-cam.com/video/VDqceNNey3M/v-deo.html and am wondering if you have had any issues with the blades and chippings building up behind them?
Hi, had no issues with blades. I do get chippings build up in the plastic attachment for two reasons. The attachment is for 100mm hose mine is 50mm and I just got a shop vac which is not good for this type of tools. You need a chip extractor - high volume low pressure. Secondly, this issue gets worse when I do deeper cuts. So if I had a proper chip extractor plus normal passes I don't think I would have issues with the chip build up.

See this video to understand the different types of rotary cutter.

You will get the best result if you choose a cutter that has blades set on an angle and the Shelix helical cutter has this. Good luck.
thank you I will check out the videos and see what I can get
You can do this, but it'll cost about as much as the machine itself. Shelix heads are £250-300.
Do you think you could use it for sleepers 100cm thinkness
Sleepers no problem just make sure there is no metal in them. You mean 10cm thickness?
Tomasz, are you running it with an EU-to-UK adapter? Would it be safe just to cut the EU plug off and replace it with a UK one with 16A fuse?
Thanks man. Useful and enjoyable
Thank you kindly
i have a number of routers i have purchased this one as a trial a couple of years ago i used it to make a very small portable router table fantastic cant go wrong for money i use it more than my large router table the base that came with it is screwed to table i have recently purchased a makita cordless router which fits all the bases
How are the blades,
To be fair not bad at all. Had to change them only once in all the years. But I am a diyer so let's say the use is not constant.
@@CasualDIY thanks..i want it for guitar bodies..on the specs it says 330mm maximum width..you said 32.5cm ..wil it do 33cm?
@@aevoguitars2576 if you go with the full capacity you will always run to the danger of the board getting wedged inside the planer. Personally I would not recommend it.
@@CasualDIY thanks.i will have a good measure of the guitars.
Hi, all planers do that unfortunately. But there are way to limit this. Its called a snipe. UA-cam it 😁👍
@@CasualDIY Thanks will search for it. All the best.
this seems to be a similar price to the dewalt, i guess prices have risen?
Thanks, I just bought a new set once . So the set I go in now is nearly a year old. Not sure if you can sharpen the blades, I would guess you can.
Really helpful - thanks 👍
Thanks for watching Nigel 👍
Bought this model after watching review awesome bitbof kit
Yep I do agree 👍😁
To be fair, the clogging is more than likely due to your inadequate 'extractor'. A shop vac simply isn't powerful enough.
Yes that could be the case. I was thinking of getting a chip extractor high volume the ones you can mount on a wall but not decided yet. Just the space limitations are an absolute nightmare 🤔
@@CasualDIY I know the feeling. I use a vac on my Triton, and it gets about 70% of the chips. But I have no space for anything more powerful either
I think, if your Vac is a decent one, you’re good to go as far as the hose diameter is above 50 mm. If I remember it right, Metabo suggests for the DH330 58 mm or bigger.
Great review mate
Thank you kindly 👍
Nice review
Thanks
👍👍👍Thanks for useful tips and detailed information.
Thank you kindly for watching 😁👍
hello have your
CUTTERBLOCK WEDGES (things that keep blades in place) ever bent or deformed and if so how u solved that
Hi, not had that problem 🤔
Do you actually do any projects or just buy and review tools??
Lol yes I do projects. I don't tend to post them on UA-cam as it takes far longer to record it, edit it etc. And then usually no one watches it lol a lot of projects are repeated so it's pointless to do 10 videos of making the same cabinet, side table etc.
I'm still looking for a great thicknesser for a friendly price 😅
Watch out for those summer sales mate
Good job.
Thanks
Just bought it . Its now €580
Mad prices
Nice video! Direct like 👍
Thank you kindly😁👍
Another great revue mate. Looks like you got a good machine there. I know chip collection is a problem on most thicknessers, I made a larger one for mine. Stay safe.
Thanks mate, yes I will find a way to get it sorted eventually 🤔

@@CasualDIY ok thanks, I'll bear that in mind. Apparently it's arriving tomorrow so hopefully I have a similar experience to yours 👍
he speaks for 13 minutes and doesn't show how the machine works
You can see how it works on my other videos. It works as any other thocknesser
I have same one, really don't like it, no better than cheap one's
Very expensive and no better then cheap ones
Hmm I find mine quite good, far better than my Titan
Super video browo Tomek tyle detali pieknie opowiedziane naprawde kupie. bo zastanawialem sie czy nie jest gorsza od Dewalt ale widze ze nie dzieki pozdrawiam
In English all positive 😂 thx Tomek
Dobry sprzęt i dalej po latach działa świetnie 👍😅
Over here in Serbia it is around 800euros 🥲
Way too expensive
