  • Part 2 of the Remington 783 series: • Remington783 - Testing...
    Come join me on my quest to shoot sub 1/2 MOA @100 yards from the economically-priced Remington 783 rifle. I show you some of the powder and bullet-seating combinations that I used along the way.
    Eventually I find a magic combination that surprised the heck out of me. In all honesty, this was something I did out of sheer curiosity because this is my hunting rifle and I have no intentions of turning it into a target gun.
    Still, I had a ton of fun and learned a lot during the process. The Remington 783 is chambered in a number of cartridges, however I'm using the tried and true versatile 308 Winchester.
    Thank you for watching and I welcome all comments and suggestions. If you guys have ideas for a video, please let me know and don't forget to subscribe for more videos on outdoor products, self-defense, hunting and other macho and fun things. :)

    Nobody have done better review with Remington 783 with actual shooting beyond 100 yrd, There is still simple/useful staff more to review missing about the rifle itself (but other people have done it), but I like it and is most professional. Thank you it was very helpful and I like your style, accent and pronunciation.

      Thanks for the feedback, Krzysztof! Although I have no intention of shooting anything beyond 200 yards in a hunting capacity (if I can help it), the 783 is certainly more than capable by simply using optimized handloads.
      Thanks for watching!

      243 is a tad hard on the barrel throat. mostly coyote and ground hog here. see if I can work a load up. thank's again . I know it costs $$$ and time on your review.

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  8 років тому +2

      +kevin keesee You know, I've heard that the 243 can be tough on the barrel and throat but only when loading hot loads, something that approaches or exceeds 4,000 fps. Still though, you can't argue its flat shooting characteristics. How many rounds do you anticipate the throat can handle before it erodes too much?
      As far as the vids, yep it's definitely an investment in time and funds but I love doing it and try to do it when I can. Thank you :)

    great info thanks still deciding between the Remington 700 and the 783.

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  8 років тому

      +aj W I have both and love 'em. My 700 is the SPS Tactical also in 308 Winchester that I use primarily for punching paper. It has the bull barrel and overall the gun is too heavy to lug around for hunting which is why I purchased the 783. Both are budget friendly and both will shoot under 1/2 MOA with the right hand load.

    • @Silentdeath1194
      @Silentdeath1194 8 років тому

      +IslanderHero thank you very much I was also thinking about the .270 Winchester

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  8 років тому

      +aj W The .270 is an excellent caliber. It shoots flatter than the .308 and will take down practically any North American game animal. In general, it recoils a bit harder than the .308 but it's still manageable. I just prefer the .308 since reloading components are a little easier to find. Just a tad bit easier anyway. :)

    Liked your video. The .308 Win is my favorite cartridge and have been loading it for many years, may I suggest. Try Varget, the best powder for the .308 Win, bar none. Your load was good, but to make it great, try the following. LEE Collet die, no case stretching and uniform neck sizing. When the bolt becomes a little too snug upon closing, REDDING Body die to bump the shoulder and size the base with out deforming the neck. FORSTER Ultramicrometer seater die, the best in my opinion, and this is where it gets a little sticky. Many people will tell you opposite, but my chronograph sessions have proven the the results of the LEE Factory Crimp die. Applying a crimp to a bullet with or without a cannelure will help with the pressure curve, the more consistent, the more accurate. My best load ever was with LAPUA brass, CCI BR-2 primers, VARGET and LAPUA 155gr SCENAR bullets, 5 shot groups produced 4 fps extreme spread with 1.4 fps standard deviation, on multiple sessions. This combination of dies is what I use for every caliber I reload and the results speak for themselves. All the best. Dave & The Girls

    My god this man is a genius! I'm just getting into hunting and looking at the 783, Ruger American Predator, and "kind of" the savage axis (but not really). The 783 seems great but im on the fence. The bullet reloading part of this video was great dude. So informative and helpful, way more than alot of channels out there. Not sure if you did another video on the bullet reloading but I will definitely check AND IF YOU DIDN'T MAKE ONE PLEASE. Everyone else on youtube doesn't make sense like you brotha! keep it up!

  • @jonlucas5521

    Great video...Finding those golden loads is a slow, tedious, but very satisfying quest. I'm picking up a 783 in 308 next week. I'll keep Reloader 15 in the back of my mind as I work up some loads for it. I had high hopes for the CFE223, but we'll just have to see where it goes from there.

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  7 років тому

      +Jon Lucas Thanks for taking the time to comment, Jon. You're absolutely right about the process of finding a pet load. Tedious for sure but the payout is highly satisfying. Enjoy your rifle! It's a great little shooter for sure.
      In all honesty, every powder I've tried produced at least a 1/2 MOA at 100 yards after careful load development. Varget and Reloder 15 are my favorites, but CFE223, 8208XBR, IMR 4895, IMR 4064, IMR 4166 and others all performed well. For temp insensitivity, Varget and 4166 are my go-to powders.

    Im getting this same rifle but it will be chambered in 30-06 i was curious about this rifle at first and the reason why is because i had a Remington 770 in 308 shot it twice the stock cracked and then the scope that came with broke . But i did get my money back. I had people tell me this rifle the 783 is alot better and bolt works smooth like butter. And this video also showed me that. Thanks!

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  8 років тому

      Thanks for the comment, Mark. The 770 was Remington's offer to the budget rifle market, but everywhere I've read about it, most folks just considered it a very cheap and poorly made version of the 700. Looks like they took some of those criticisms to heart before they designed the 783. I'm very happy with mine and have no plans to modify it. It's light, shoots very well and the trigger is amazing out of the box (to me anyway). Thanks for watching!

  • @STARZFAN31
    @STARZFAN31 6 років тому

    The 783 is a great rifle right out of the box giving it the potential to be an awesome rifle with a few additions and the right ammo. I love mine and the trigger really amazed me... so clean and crisp. You wouldnt expect to find this kind of quality trigger on a rifle that didnt cost that much money.. Mine was about 300 dollars out the door and in coming months will change out the factory scope and experiment with several different ammunitions. All in all, great rifle, performs wonderfully, the recoil pad on the butt of the rifle does a great job at eating recoil and for those who cannot afford to spend $1000 dollars on a rifle, this is a great choice by a great rifle manufacturer.

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  6 років тому

    Don't have a lot of experience with the 783, but I did sight one in at 100 two years in a row and I have to say I was impressed with the accuracy. Shooting factory 180 grain 30-06 ammo I always put two shots well inside an inch at 100. 4 shots and it was sighted in. The next year I was asked to verify the 0 by the owner and it was spot on with again 2 shots well inside and inch. To tell you the truth that's about as well as these old eyes can shoot at 100 with a 9X power scope so it's very possible it shot even better than I could. Heck it shot as well my old Sako Hunter in 7mm08 with factory ammo.

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  8 років тому

      Hi Denis! When I bought the 783, I told myself I would be happy with 1 MOA at 100 yards, however, of course curiosity got the better of me and I had to develop a load for it. Kudos to you, however! Shooting under MOA with a 9x scope is not an easy task. That stock on the Sako Hunter is beautiful I have to admit. :)

    Thank you for this very informative video and even more for what you left out. Too many shooters feel the need to spice it up with language that does nothing but make them appear to be what we called trashy back in the 1960's. I have been looking at a 783 in 243 Winchester and your review ( the best I've seen on this particular rifle) has convinced me to pull the trigger on it. I wish you'd do a more in depth review on the rifle itself, a lot of us are curious about it and the videos I found were either advertisements or done by people who lack the skill to articulate the things people interested in a firearm really need to know. You my friend seem to possess that skill and I thank you again for this video.

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  8 років тому +3

      +mwilson70201 You're welcome and thank you for the kind words. I am sure you will be happy with the 783 in 243 Win. Seeing as this is now my most popular video (ironically, because in hindsight I think it was haphazardly put together), it appears that a thorough review is in order. I'm working on a couple of other gear review videos at the moment, however hang tight and I'll put the 783 back in the spotlight shortly. Thanks for watching!

    This was a very informative video. This young man is articulate and is educated in reloading, measuring the velocity of his reloads and understanding that it takes time and patience to find the proper propellants and bullets to maximize accuracy. I choose the proper bullet for the game I am hunting and try to build accuracy around my chosen targets. I know bullet weights for the .308 are numerous, but choose one weight to work with. 150 grainers are great for deer but in my opinion are not optimal for elk. I use 165s for this game animal and build from there.

    I've got the same rifle and my best group "amateur speaking" is half m.o.a. at 100 yards laying down using a forked stick as a rest with the factory scope. And that is right after i cleaned it really well. I'm still breaking it in though. I used factory remington core lokt ammo! Soon i will be trying to zero it in at 200 yards.

    Nice vid! Very quality gun. Went hunting for the first time this past weekend and killed a 175 lb hog with it! A lot of my buddy's paid $800+ for a rifle that functioned the exact same way. No problems whatsoever. Would definitely recommend it.

    H-380 powder works very very well in my .308 Win. Its a low pressure powder also and has a true ball configuration so it won't wear the barrel as much. It also meters pretty accurately from a powder measure. Bet you it will give you a better extreme spread by at least 1/2 of what you're getting now.
    I've not changed powders for 30 years because with clover leafs that can be covered with a dime and low pressure ball powders, what else do you need. I use hunting bullets exclusively for my loads.

      IslanderHero i tried h4895 and had trouble getting good results. although the h4895 did well with the 165gr sst's & 150gr sst's. weird why the h4895 didn't do good with the lapuas. . tried every seating depth and charge combos i could. gave up and tried varget & had great results right away:)

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  8 років тому

      +Nick I haven't tried H4895, but on the IMR4895 side, I always found it to be too hot. It's definitely medium burning on the chart, but it was inconsistent for me. The benchrest guys use Varget and Reloder 15 and once I tried them, my groups shrunk. Thanks for the update!

      Off the topic of reloading, do you know what parts of the 783 are shared with the 700? Id be interested in getting a heavy barrel for my rifle & maybe have to get some stock work or a new stock. Wonder if a model 700 heavy barrel forsale would fit right in? Can call it how to build a cheap deadly consistent Gun. Lol

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  8 років тому

      +Nick Sadly, I don't think any of the parts are interchangeable to the best of my knowledge. The trigger group and receivers are different. The 783 uses a barrel nut system similar to the Savage rifles. You can remove the 783 barrel (with the proper tools) but cannot swap it with one designed for a Rem 700.
      You would have to look at companies like Criterion or X-Caliber who make barrels specifically for the 783. As for other aftermarket parts, Boyds makes nice stocks for the 783.

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  8 років тому

      Hey Nick, that's a great group with the 168 grainers. Nice! About the SSTs, I actually have a box of it but haven't had a chance to do an accuracy test yet. The projectiles themselves (150gr SSTs) perform very well in my handloads. I saw your vid about a year ago, great job! Are you still happy with your Vortex scope? You mention in your vid that it has held zero for over 500 sounds.
      Feel free to message me if you have any handloading questions. I'd be happy to help. I've tried IMR4895 but not H4895. Regardless of powder, as long as you start at least 10% below max pressure and work your way up slowly while looking for pressure signs, you should be fine. It's also a good idea to have at least two handloading manuals.

      Hi Jeff! Apologies for the delay. UA-cam for some reason decided that your message needed moderation (no idea why) so it was stuck in my "Likely Spam" folder and didn't notice it until now. My rifle did not perform well with the Core-Lokts either (150 grain). I tested it out in my second Rem 783 video and the group was 2.7 inches. For hunting, I would not be comfortable using it for anything beyond 250 yards.

    also, I've found that 308's in 1-10 twist are more suited to 168gr bullets and ~43.5 varget. the only gun that doesn't like my standard loads is my AR308 (my savage, Mossberg and Remington that I've owned in the past vary about .3 - 2 grains). I also found it bennificial to move in .5 grain increments and when you get 2 that are close in size you split the difference. it's time consuming but working up loads is always worth it. my rem 700 300 win mag was a bitch to get set but using the above mentioned technique recommend by my gunshop, I was able to get a 150GR slug moving at over 3200fps and accurate as hell. .3 grain increments is probably better suited to a 308 though since it has alot less powder. I would love to see a video made for accuracy loading though. I can stand to learn a thing or two. great videos! I am subscribed!!!

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  8 років тому +1

      Thanks for subscribing, Patrick. I appreciate the support! I have a couple of rifles chambered in 308, one with a 1-10 twist and the other with a 1-12. I've found both to be very accurate with 168 grain projectiles and pretty much all of the medium-burning powders in the market. I never shoot past 500 yards, so loading close to the max pressure limit does not provide much benefit. The bullet remains stabilized from beginning to end, well, according to my chronograph and ballistics calculator anyway. :)
      By the way, come to think of it, I think I've tried 43.5 grains of Varget under a 168grain Hornady A-Max with the bullet jumping the lands at .020" and it shot sub-moa groups. I agree with you totally about working up in increments of .3 tenths of a grain for the 308. Works very well for me.
      My all time accuracy load is 40.7 grains of Reloder 15 (I know, don't laugh) under the same Hornady 168 grain A-Max. I'm not even jumping the lands with this one. I seat the bullet to the standard 2.8" COAL (from case head to bullet tip). This charge, according to my manual should fly at 2400 fps, however coming out of my 20" barrel, I'd be surprised if it clocks at anything near 2350. I haven't run it through my chronograph yet. It's a slow round for sure, but man, it literally shoots into the same hole at 100 yards. I was shooting out the 1/4" letters on my targets. Now, if only Reloder 15 weren't so darn hard to find. Varget is made of unobtanium too, but not as bad as Reloder 15.
      Oh, and your 150 grain round moving at over 3200 fps is mind-boggling. 300 Win Mag with that awesome case capacity for the win. lol! Best I can do with 150 grains from my 22" barrel 783 is 2800 fps.

    having a hard time getting my 783 to shoot under 4" groups. Its new but I haven't shot any real expensive ammo out of it yet. I will have to buy some of those 168 Sierras. Kinda disappointing to get so poor of groups on my riffle.

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  8 років тому

      +Hannah Avery Hi Hannah! Don't lose hope. I think you're just in the middle of your search for an accurate load. In my experience, hunting rounds group anywhere between 2 - 3 inches, which is fine for its intended purpose.
      For target shooting and smaller groups, definitely try the Federal Gold Medal match 168 grain. It always shoots less than an inch at 100 yards in all my rifles. I also hear that Hornady Superformance is another potential load to try. I have a box but just haven't had a chance to hit the range.
      The ideal load is one you make for your specific rifle, of course, but outside of this, try and pick up a box of Federal or Hornady if you can. Your rifle is new as well, so keep on shooting! You might be pleasantly surprised with better accuracy once the barrel and other internals are seasoned. Good luck! :)

    Hey dude, do this video... I've been bothered for half loooooong year to decide between a 270 and a 308 --- a lot of heated fights among friends. Finally, just ordered my 783 308 today !!! I know you must have tried hundreds of different loading recipes. Could you share the most current one, so I can cut the damn learning curve? Thanks!!!

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  6 років тому

      It's an endless debate and you can argue with someone about it until you're both out of breath. In the end, both calibers are amazing, I just went with the .308 because reloading components (and commercial ammo if you don't reload) is available everywhere. For loads, I love Varget and Reloder 15 for the 168 grain projectiles. I use either Sierra or Hornady. Start off low, at 41, or even 40.5 grains to be safe and then work up from there. For me, the magic happens between 42.0 - 42.5 grains of Varget (or RL-15), but again start off low and work up in either .2 or .3 grains at a time until you reach the velocity and accuracy that your rifle likes. You'll know when you get there, as it will be a harmony of vibrational frequency that your barrel prefers and of course will result in excellent groups. I am working on loads for the 155 grain projectiles so that I can achieve higher velocities, but it's still a work in progress. Good luck!

    • @ve7yan
      @ve7yan 6 років тому

      Thanks, dude! I'll get a pound of Varget and 100 168's to start with! Any 2nd thought before I commit to buy? Oh, BTW, mine 308 (on its way now) is the compact 783 with only 20" barrel length, as you mentioned the detailed harmonic freq. & nodes, etc.

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  6 років тому

      The barrel on my other .308 rifle is 20" as well and it likes the 168 grain projectiles. However, the twist rate is 1-in-12 so it may be too slow to push the 168 past 600 yards efficiently so I'm working with the 155 grain right now. However, for anything at 600 yards and closer, the 168 should work just fine. At some point when you get comfortable with the 168 grains, pick up the 155s and give 'em a try. :)

      +IslanderHero the only problem I found with it is that it will miss feeds after a while because the spring wont apply equal pressure on the 1st bullet. it only happens when you have all 4 bullets on the mag. Other then that, best gun for the price and there is nothing wrong with it, just the mag.

    That's interesting. I've got the same rifle, and the Hornady SST factory loads didn't seem any more accurate than Remington Core-Lokts - About 2 inches at 100 yards (definitely minute-of-elk, though). Guess I'll have to do a little handloading to really tweak it! Actually, the Core-lokts gave me a 1-inch group at 200 yards one time, but that was a particularly good day at the range. Thanks for the great video! Have you gotten to hunt with it yet?

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  8 років тому

      +Dillon Warn Hey Dillon! I haven't gotten a chance to try the factory SST loads but I'd venture to guess it will print the same 2 inch group out of my rifle. The Federal GMM rounds are the only factory rounds that shoot under MOA in my rifles (168 grain).
      1-inch groups @200 yards with the Core-Lokts is pretty darn good! They didn't perform well in my rifle, but hey minute-of-elk will suffice. Lol
      Thanks for watching! As for hunting, sadly no, I didn't draw a mule deer tag this year so the 783 will have to wait until next season. Although I'm thinking of taking a trip to Texas for hogs. :)

    I have been reloading for a long time and you put together a very, very good video, fun to watch also. Best of all the 783 video's that I have watched! If you had a few more rounds, you would have got that clay pigeon and all the rest once you got your scope dialed in. Check out the Bushnell elete 4x16 HD scope on amazon that has side parallax and small target knobs. Put automobile pen striping material on the elevation knob and mark for distance, the scope is unreal clear and repeatable. Keep those video's coming! Keep taking your son shooting also. Ear plugs and electronic ear muffs will allow him to stop blinking at the sound of the shot, better spotter!!!

    • @IslanderHero
      @IslanderHero  8 років тому

      Thanks, Sylvia! Reloading is almost therapeutic for me, but the subject can be pretty dry so I tried to present it in a brief manner but entertaining manner. Yeah, If I had a few more rounds to dial in my scope, I would have had a better chance. I do redeem myself in the latest video, however, so check that out when you get a moment. Thanks for the information on the Bushnell scope! I'll have a look it. My son had on his electronic ear muff, but great idea, I'll have him wear ear plugs as well because he admittedly kept flinching and knocking the spotting scope off target. I appreciate the feedback and suggestion. Thanks again :)
