    I got my first deer ever with my buddy's Remington 7400 in 270 at 65 yards (a nice 6 point buck down in Boone County, West Virginia). When it came time to get my own deer rifle, I went with the 783 also in 270 thinking when she fails me, I'll upgrade to a nice 700 CDL. It's been 1/2 a decade now. She still hasn't failed me year in, year out and it's almost always nothing, but heart shots. For the money and NOT for the money, it's a hell of a gun.

    I have a 783, Heavy barrel (threaded) in 6.5 creedmoor. This gun is a tack driver and will outshoot almost anything else I have. I have never been a Remington guy, but this gun was worth a flyer just on price alone. I get it's a "budget" rifle, but I am very happy with it, believe it or not it outshoots my Kimber 84m and my Ruger American....

      FLYER GRIFFIN Similar experience to mine. I purchased the 783 as a cheap extra rifle to have in case somebody wanted to come hunting or as a back up gun. I was immediately impressed with its accuracy and I can testify to its durability over the last five years, I have rode this thing hard and put it to bed wet many times. It’s just a great design that happens to also be something that lends itself to cheap mass production.So rather than look a gift horse in the mouth I just keep taking of hunting and I just keep killing deer and any range I need.

      I know what you mean about Remington rifles. I have an old model 700 in 308 that will make little cloverleafs that can be covered with a dime. I had a little accurizing done to it though.
      Bottom line is that it was a well made rifle to begin with.

    I don't like detachable magazine bolt action rifles generally because the racket is to sell magazines. Magazines tend to be of dubious quality and break or get lost. The stock on the 783 did not have to follow the styling of the failed 770, mistake. I prefer the Marlin X7, the parent of the 783, but the 783 is a good economy rifle. The extractor, rotating bolt head and superior trigger give it an advantage over the 700 ADL. The 700's aftermarket support blows the doors off the 783. It's a more refined rifle, no NINJA detachable magazines, no barrel nuts, no plastic sling studs. Both bedded in good stocks will shoot well. Resale and name alone propel the 700 over the 783. The 783 needs to be redone and maybe marketed as a Model 800, using the same receiver contours as the 700 with the same stocks, scope mounts and bottom metal and maybe retaining the barrel nut, but definitely using the Marlin X7 bolt, perhaps beefier. That rifle might give the 700 a run for its money and maybe even retire it (sans barrel nut). As it stands, the 783 is a good economy rifle in need of a better stock and a duracoat finish, not as good as the Marlin X7 it is descended from: it is not capable of dethroning the 700 at this point.

    If you get out performed, take it and go.
    I have shot the, 700, and 783. Both shoot excellent.
    Didn't like the 770. It shot good, but was cumbersome.
    I've shot the 700, and 783 against rifles that cost a lot more, and haven't been able to find any differences in accuracy. It's got a lot to do with who's pulling the trigger.

    would have been cool to see the 783 in .308 compared to your 700. Different scopes aren't a concern, if you zero them both at the same range and magnification. The ballistic performance is what I'd like to see between those models in the same caliber.

      @@drdrake63 indeed. Unfortunately around where I Liv, the most accessible gun ranges are indoors at 25 yards. And only one of them allows you to shoot rifles. So my 783, in 308 is zeroed at 25 yards. Which, numbers-wise would put the round at the same elevation at 230 yards. I just wish I could find a range here in Forsyth County North Carolina that has 100 + yard shooting lanes.

  • @rbm6184
    @rbm6184 5 років тому +3

    Other than the detachable mag, the 783 also has a trigger safety. I hate trigger safeties especially on a rifle as it interferes with accuracy. I will take a 700 any day. More expensive though. I suppose the trigger could be changed without the safety but then its added cost on the 783.
    Caliber is the big reason the 783 out shot the 700. The .270 is flatter than the .308.

    • @drdrake63
      @drdrake63  5 років тому +1

      RB M With all due respect I think your comment is inaccurate . First of all it’s not a trigger safety it’s a two-stage trigger. Secondly I’ll take that trigger over any 700 stock trigger any day and anyone who is shot both will tell you the same thing.

    • @rbm6184
      @rbm6184 5 років тому +1

      @@drdrake63 I will say it in a different way, any added "thing" on a trigger interferes with accuracy. Whether safety or stage it is a thing on the trigger.

    • @drdrake63
      @drdrake63  5 років тому +1

      RB M You are certainly entitled to your opinion and of course it is welcome here. I shoot this rifle more accurately than any Remington 700 I’ve owned and I’ve owned several with both factory and aftermarket triggers. I think it comes down to the shooter and what you can comfortably use as opposed to an absolute statement about something causing a rifle to be inaccurate.

    • @walliehart2055
      @walliehart2055 5 років тому +1

      Imho you chose well. The 700 is a very good push feed platform. A competent smith should not charge much to sqare and true the barrel to the action. He can also tweek that factory trigger for a small fee. Then you would have a rifle that will shoot circles around any budget rifle. I have saw to many burgered bolts and triggers on budget rifles to wast my money on any of them. Also i find the 270's always group better than 30 cals myself. Maybe because more metal left after. Boring. Idk. 👍

    Perhaps the biggest asset of the 700ADL is that it shoots as good as they high end 700s and is kind of like the old small block Chevys. There is a LOT of upgrades around that you can gradually, or rapidly, upgrade the rifle to the equivalent of the high end models.

      The 700 action is one of the easiest to "accurize" which is why the Marines still use the 700 (M24) as their sniper rifle. I had my gunsmith work on mine a bit and it now shoots SUB .5 MOA.

    Winner seems purty obvious to me.....yes the 270. 270 will out shoot a 308 in external ballistics ANY DAY, less drop less wind bucking, less doping....I see no comparison between 308 and 270, maybe against a grizzly at close range 308

    • @rmichaelzachary8574
      @rmichaelzachary8574 5 років тому +1

      Ballistically, a .270 is hard pressed to outshoot a .308 "any day." It is generally flatter shooting with greater velocity but with less retained energy, lower sectional density and lower ballistic coefficients. A 175 Grain TMK .308 will outshoot a .270 loaded properly in terms of retained energy over distance and ballistics over distance.

      @@drdrake63 personally if i where in big aggressive grizz country, and had to use a bolt . Much rather have controled feed prefer a k98 or Win 70. I watched a vidio where a hunter shot a Kodiak feeding towards them presenting the right shouder while looking over left shoulder almost broadside at about 60 yards. The bear had no clue the hunter was there.. they took the shot slightly uphill from the bear with a 375 hnh i believe. It was a dangerous game rifle, a ruger safari or Alaskan. Or somthing simular. At the shot which was a center punch dead center of proud left shoulder, rolled the huge grizz. Then identifying the threat charged a fracton of 1 second later anouther shot rang out a tuff of hair blew from the top of the bears head then skidded to a stop within 8/10 FEET of the hunter who was in the process of recovering from the recoil lowering the rifle while pushing the bolt forward. The hunter shot once . The camera paned around to the guide who was opening the bolt of a wood stocked win 70 with a very small scope with no front (bell?) Just a rear one. Who had a sh+t eating grinn on his scruffy face. It was a standard win70 rifle chambered in 270 or 30-06 seeing the empty case he was ejecting. This hunter had plently of rifle chambered correctly and the shot was ideal.. still the guide saved the day by opening his brain pan, thus shutting down the nervous system. The hunter was confused and shakened , sitting down indian style, with rifle laying accross thier lap still out of battery with bolt opened , head resting on both hands looking down , not at the 10' Kodiak 6 feet to their forward. All this transpired in less than 3 seconds. If not for the guide that bear would have killed the hunter easily, with its heart blown to pieces and both front shoulders shattered. They are very tuff, strong , fast and agile killing machines. This one was a trophy class animal . 10 Feet probably about 1,000 lbs. Although they come much larger than this. Also lets not forget about Africa. Like i said before the budget Remington is a competent rifle for non dangerous game. It is not for nor was it designed for dangerous game.
      It has a purpose and it fulfills that purpose sufficiently. From the reviews i have seen. I would suggest you look into the Mossberg Patriot rifles. Most i have seen print quarter sized groups at 100 yards with normal ammo ,and cut clovers with premium. As for the 270 win ,I have owned basically 3 that I purposefully acquired. One was a ridicules costom i had built by a famous smith in Montana. I wont mention any names, K98k ,timney, 26' bull barrel, in a costom lamented stock ,the works. Bedded and tuned. Shot every ammo i tried hole for hole at 100 yards. I had some costom cartridges worked up for it using a mix of powders that would shoot with if not better than a 270 mag. Young dumb working doubles to afford it. Over 2,000 bucks not counting. The Burris scope or expensive mounts and rings. I trade for a old truck because at 12+ lbs was not a good hunting rifle, for me. My Favorite and the only game rifle i own currently handles as well for me as a upland bird shotgun. It shoots amazingly well with a COLD bore is a Remington 7400 mid to late 90's vintage ,with original trigger. Also every 270 i owned have loved Winchester white box 130grain Silver tips. They are about 3/4 more bucks expensive than plain ammo but worth every cent. Still cheaper by far than Premium ammo. They shoot great and for some reason they put the game down. I was hunting a power line right of way that crossed a valley between 2 mountains with a large meadow in the valley. I saw a doe running downhill crossing the right of way at a 45° angle twitching her tail looking behind her nervously on every bound. I marked a spot with my eyes on the path she crossed at decided to aim at the bare spot she litt on after jumping a thorn bush she bounded over when crossing. 30 sec.later i faintly heard brush cracking , using a 6" tree to steady my rifle from a seated position i pulled the trigger just as he bounded over the thorn bush running down hill full tilt crossing just as the doe. I caught him in my scope 2 more times firing each time. 1st shot blew his heart n lungs out. One of the latter blew a front hoff of the other took a fist sized piece of flesh from a hind. We used a lazer the following year to check the distance. 400 yards full rutt running 3 year old white tail down hill chasing a hot doe. 3 shots 3 hits with the first being fatal. I checked the crime scene. This is why the 270 is favored by savy hunters. The bullet gets to the target faster . Higher balistic coefficient, less wind drag ,flatter trajectory and a much higher sectional density, combined with higher velocity , produces more hydrostatic shock or( knock down power) on medium sized game.. the 17 inch inside spread 8 point or 4×4 ,wieghed 175 lbs after field dressed. That so far has been my best shot attempted and made in 25+ years of hunting Whitetail deer in West Virginia.
      No Sr you should not hunt dangerous game with any budget rifle. Or a professional guide for that matter. I would recommend a sturdy double rifle, atleast a quality controled feed bolt should be required. Saying that i would trust my 7400 . I would not recommend or advise it to others. Getting killed is one thing ,being responsible for anouthers is a completely different matter idk if i could live with. Sorry so long. Be careful fellow countryman.

      ritesideofthefence 58 Hard to say with the type of wind that was happening when I shot this video. It was just crazy gusty as you can see from the video footage. I would not expect optimal performance from the Bushnell - But accurate enough for hunting inside of 300 yards.

    Declare a winner on a windy day.....nope.
    But I'm prejudiced against the 270 win from long ago experiences.
    Good video though.

      If I'm not mistaken, moa at 200yds is 2 inches. 3 inches at 300yds.

      Look on Cabelas website for each rifle and it will tell you the twist rate.

    And this claim of flat shooting cartridges, PURE B.S. There is NO such thing. As soon as that bullet leaves the barrel,it is subject to gravity just like EVERYTHING ELSE. Your lobbing any and every bullet UNLESS that target is right in front of the crown of the barrel.

    • @drdrake63
      @drdrake63  3 роки тому

      Not BS. Some rounds drop less when they lose energy than others.

  • @nealhadley1482

    It is still B.S. they ALL drop,you CAN'T STOP GRAVITY.

    That test was not even close to apple's to apple's the 783 is free floating and 700 isn't and big difference in caliber true testing the 783 against 700 same caliber with a aluminum pillar free floating barrell.

      Do it 270 win will take any NA game at long range. All these 6.5 Grendel and creeds and all are just re inventing the wheel for a 260, the 270 little brother both outstanding rounds 270 has that extra punch at range,
      .260 is .264, .270 is .277. Go with the heavier faster 270 you will never regret it

    Cheap gun,cheap scope,. If the 783 is future of Remington they are doomed. That is the ugliest rifle I've seen. The camo job is bad ass though

    Maybe YOU don't understand GRAVITY, how it affects bullets and every thing else. I completely understand ballistics and the affects of gravity, wind,eart rotation, and whatever else you want to add into this discussion. BOTTOM line is dropage as soon as it leaves the barrel. Fire some tracers and watch them drop,as everything else does.

    With reminton its hit or miss I had a 783 in 308 and it shot 4 inch groups at 100. My Remington 700 in 6.5 creedmore shoots 1moa but I've had one that was in 700 that also shot 2.5moa at 100 with 308 as well. Maybe it's just their 308 models lol.
