I would say leave it to a difficultly setting, Manual or automatic navigation, some like myself like to use sims like this as a learning tool. Eg i didn't know anything about navigation by stars before i played sailwind. So yea id have it as a setting that is chosen at the start of a save :) makes long journeys more interesting much like Manual sailing and trim ect. Boats can seem boaring from the offset but there can be lots to do if you implement it! Hope this is of help and isn't to obvious 😅

Just finding out about this project (thanks, youtube algorithm). Personally, I would prefer as manual and "realistic" of a process as possible- to include taking readings at noon, taking depth soundings and comparing to bathymetric charts, maybe taking readings on multiple stars against an almanac, all that fun stuff, but I'd qualify that statement by bringing up that I'm probably on the extreme end of that opinion there. Still, navigation is an interesting subject that stands to add some potentially interesting gameplay to what might otherwise be long stretches of just watching the waves go by.

I love the level of convenience, yet still having depth of features and mechanics. As a sailor and someone who is interested in where this goes, I like the sextant and chronometer yet how simple you made them. The map system seems great too, however the rulers felt a little visually imposing. Maybe with a full map it will have a different feel.

Thank you for the comment -- I'll maybe look at reducing the thickness of the metal parts of the rulers, as you're right they cover up a lot given the map scale.

I like the manual navigation. I love how this is going.

On another video you mentioned that you were afraid long voyages would become boring, by having a realistic navigation, you add a lot of things to do during fair weather, and on bad weather when you cannot get reading the time will be filled by handling that bad weather.
On another note, i really liked the manual interaction with the map; it would be awesome to have an interactive map and tools like the silent hunter games allowed.

Love the manual navigation system. But I'm sure some people will appreciate having a simpler option as well.

I’d say that you should go the same way Sailwind is approaching navigation, a simplified yet realistic use of actual navigation instruments. And maybe have an option to even make things simpler for people that do not enjoy this kind of things

I am not a sailer but have always been intrested in nautical games particularly navigation which has been lacking in so many nautical games I have played, I am very intrested in the future development of this game, you've got me hooked, have subscribed.
