  • Do transformers make a real difference in mic design? Hear for yourself and decide!
Some say they can have airier highs, more supple lows, and a little bit of nice saturation or transient smoothing.
Others say they raise costs while making the sound a little grittier and less clear. What do you think?
Justin Colletti evaluates the latest from JZ Microphones, the BB29, their first design to feature a transformer. It's voiced brighter than their other mics on top, but with warmth from the transformer and a slight midrange bump.

BH & BB29 are the standouts to me. Great detail and balance.

Oooo really tough choice. The thing that makes me prefer the 29 is the thing that will make me work more on deessing. The Black Hole might easier to work with...but I'll choose the 29 for instant gratification. I love the air on it. 29 for music, Black Hole for video voice-over.
Edit: after watching all of the instruments' recording, I'd still go with the BB29 vs. Black Hole. More work, but I love the 29's detail and flatness where it counts. For me.

That Marimba playing was pretty special!

I always thought that if a mic had a transformer that just meant that it was simply a mic that was "more than meets the eye".

I’ve got one and I love it on drum room. I think it’s closest to my TLM 103 out of my collection, but I think it suits me better in terms of my horrible voice. On proper singers: It’s definitely arrangement dependent, on something quite busy I really love it.

The “sounds EQ-ed” thing isn’t just hype, it really does but in a completely natural sounding way (on voice at least). I can’t afford another mic right now but if I could I’d be buying this one. I love my v67, particularly on acoustic guitar

Wow, even on a cell phone the differences are quite apparent between the various mics.

I think the BB29 sounds better for podcasting than the vintage '67, but personally, I like the Amethyst best. If I was going to buy one of those JZ mics, I'd get the Amethyst; I just love the sound of it. Like you said, it is very similar to the vintage '67, but there's something in the '67's tone that doesn't appeal to me as much as the sound of the Amethyst.

As an OH mic, I found the BB29 smoother and more pleasing than the more transparent BH-2, both on the drums and on the marimba. For that acoustic guitar, maybe because it has a mahogany top and is probably a bit darker in tone than a guitar with a spruce top would be, I like the BH-2 for a bit more clarity and brightness than the BB29. The warmth of the BB29 doesn't help that guitar as much as it might help, say a Gibson Jumbo with a spruce top and maple back and sides.

There's a creaming effect with a transformer... it's not so much the frequency response that makes it different although audible... is how smoothed it sounds... the other, that isn't really harsh at all sounds a little harsh in comparison... this is the thing that suits us better in audio with transformers or other magnetic transformations like tape or whatever... There are always other benefits but there is a smoothing effect that just makes the sound more organic and more finished in a sense... it's kind of like having a house and all the wires are hidden and out of sight... they are needed but didn't add to the overall feel and look... you wouldn't notice the difference unless you could before and after but when you can you can see the difference and with transformers you can hear a difference... I find parts just speak to you more personally and the feeling gets better translated... that thought that "they don't make them like they used to" is simply the effect of the technology first used designed and manufactured... it was less about the graphs and more about the feeling

I like the BB29, the Blackhole was too harsh for my ears but this one is more pleasant. Only have an Amethyst yet, but been wishing for the Vintage models for a while... they look like old school flasks :)

On my phone your voice sounds better on the 29 compared to the black hole.

Just wondering... If one were to run this through a tube preamp... and then into a leveling compressor.. Like the LA76.. and finally into the audio interface to the workstation ~DAW... Thoughts guys...?

Transformers are GO! Or maybe to sound less like The Thunderbirds I should’ve said “Transformers are THE go!” Anyhow, to clarify, I think the BB29 it is an excellent microphone, more clarity, fullness and air in the comparison to the BH🙏😎

The transients sounded different between the bb29 & the blackhole. The transformer treats details differently.
