This Whelen Supply Requires a Sync Device, That's Not Why it's Broken

  • Point of failure • This Whelen Supply Req...
This Whelen aircraft power supply was sent back to the factory in 1980 because it wasn't working. The factory tested it and returned it free of charge because they determined it was a model that required an external synchronizer to work. Previous similar models worked on their own but the synchronizer could be used to make multiple supplies function together. This change from "can use a synchronizer" to "must use a synchronizer" happened around the time this one was returned in 1980; so the confusion was understandable. When I fired it up (with the correct synchronizer) in 2024 almost 45 years later, it actually was broken (or became that way). Power supplies need to be used or the capacitors go bad. This is exactly what happened here. This video show me testing, troubleshooting, and repairing the supply.

I don't know much about strobe power supplies, but one thing I do know for certain is that like 90% of their issues are the capacitors.
