No. But I drove the piss out of it. I burned through a set of of 400 treadwear front tires from brand new to slicks in about 15k miles. I also learned how to work around a weak chassis as a driver as the grand prixs under developed chassis had a habit of either plowing understeer or snapping massively aggressive oversteer. For a first car it's less about what you drive than how you drive it, you are going to find a way to have fun with it regardless. And besides, you are going to crash it at least once anyways (or you aren't trying hard enough lol) so it's best not to take out something special or expensive to repair when you do. Jason can you please give some automotive book recommendations. I like to think I know a decent bit about the history of my favorite cars but I have always been blown away by the stories and info you have picked up through certain books
Hey if the Mazda2 person is out there - depending on your height the Honda Fit may suit your needs if you are looking for a small car. We had a Mazda2 and had to sell it for the same reason. Honda Fit may not look big but we can Fit adults who are 6 foot or less in front of our rear facing child seat. Dynamically it's not quite as sharp as the Mazda2 but it's still light and nimble and in my opinion the practicality makes it worth a look.
They're different kinds of cars to serve slightly different purposes, honestly. I don't think many people are going to be cross-shopping the two. Here's an ex-Spec Miata driver spotlighting his Z4 M Coupe, for one perspective. I think more recently he's been toying with the idea of selling it, though: ua-cam.com/video/DImA1KI4HHo/v-deo.html He's got a pretty nuts NB worth checking out, too, and has been really dialing in his S2000 lately. It's a fun channel.
What hated car do you love question was interesting. Would be interesting to have an episode discussing how opinions of cars change over time. There are a lot of cars that are hated today, but in period received positive reviews/were popular. How much of a car's desirability is tied to opinions passed along by people who have never driven one.
Playing this over the speakers in my Dad's shop as I install an LS in my 300zx. Just saying this because I have a feeling Jason and Hyphen would hate me for it lol
I think the most damning thing I've found with BMW Z3 etc is that I've always been able to chase them down in mountain roads - with a 82hp Honda Fit. I can't say the same thing about Miatas.
Jason, on your excellent recommendation I bought a manual transmission '09 V8 Vantage. I absolutely love it, but if I ever decide to sell it, what would you recommend as a replacement?
I bought a V8 Vantage 4 years ago with the whole reason to enjoy it and drive everyday, plus track days. The V8 all day for the better weight distribution, lighter weight, and dry sump. It is bullet proof! The V12 does have it's faults. But, for pure sound and occasional drives. V12 all day.
NO NO NO Jason....VW bought Rolls but the name and logo for Rolls did not come with the purchase. BMW knew that and bought it from Rolls Royce Aircraft Division, the actual owner of the name and logo. BMW then bought the Rolls manufacturing division from VW who were pissed.
Are you sure about the manufacturing division? From what I remember, VW kept Bentley and that's why Bentleys are made at Crewe, but Rolls are made in Gaydon which is all new.
I'm a Fan (and owner) of the 143cv Peugeot 206 CC... perhaps another forgoten great car. Same roof designer of the first Mercedes SLK. Should it be mentioned?
Dear mister Camisa, wasn't the E30 the FIRST car with a dedicated control for the driver to get cold air in his face even if hot was selected in the controls :) Disappointed :D great show guys!
The "Elise in your 20s" talk is giving me some baaaaaad ideas. Really bad UK eBay browsing hours. Ditto the old Mini question! Love those. I think that's an even better second car, I wish I didn't need at least a coupe+rwd as the token chosen fun car because I need the room but I don't wanna do a hot hatch. Then again...Mk1 Cabbies are ***cheap*** and unsafe but ***cheap***...somehow find myself more drawn to the Mk1 than the Miata but again...asspain. All I can think of now is that my automotive progression should be interesting if things go to plan. Gotta embrace the asspain first.
My question is on sound. I agree that the best car sounds are complex combinations of induction, mechanical noises and exhaust. Why don't most modern cars seem to get that right? My sense is modern performance cars are mostly loud exhaust, which is pretty one-dimensional. And, even on that, we've traded complexity for sheer volume. Given how good modern cars are, why do they not get the sound right? Is it a trade off on NVH? Multimode exhausts, after all, can have quiet modes! Or do most people just prefer loud exhaust?
Mission-creep. Everything is trying to be an isolated "luxury car" - and then they realize they have to add something "back in." So the exhaust gets stupid loud and fake noise is played through the stereo speakers. It's beyond dumb.
Derek and Jason, avid listener here and can relate with most of your driving experiences. If you would like to give a street-registered, manual-steering, early 355 Challenge race car (one that just raced in 2022 Velocity Invitational) a go, let me know.
I am overtly biased, but do you like or dislike the (Yamaha) Taurus SHO V6 sounds? You gushed about the performance in a glorious love letter of a Revelations video, and the end features some of the best captured SHO sounds ever.
It sounds great - for a V6.... when it's under full load. V6 induction and exhaust noise is often quite lovely (and the SHO makes glorious intake noise) but the mechanical noise (and vibration coming through the floorboards) isn't pleasant. Hang out at 4000 rpm in any V6 and you'll want to bludgeon your ears out.
@@JasonCammisa hehe, 4000 RPM is right at the secondary intake switch. I find myself hanging out there all the time because of the epic intake sounds and it's right in the thick of the torque band.
Hey Jason and Derek. On the topic of fun electric(ish) cars, the Ariel Hypercar, while ugly AF, it's 1500 kg and 880 kW with the turbine thingie... I bet that while it is not on par with , it still would be light enough to be fun, and with the "jet engine" be autonomous enough to be able to have fun at a track day.. Just sayin'
Is an E90 more fun than an E46? I'm hoping to get a manual car for fun times to supplement my AWD 5.7 charger it launches great and handles great and is just a great sledgehammer I'd say the corvette is definitely a bespoke sports car and it always has been. I learned how to drive stick in a rusted out shitbox 93 sonoma 2.8 v6 5 speed with 320k miles. Then I bought a 91 silverado 5 speed any 3 dial HVAC system is the best.1 for temp dial. 1 for fan position 1 for fan speed.
A base 2015 Focus. Not crap enough to be funny, steering that’s fast but totally numb, weird torque delivery with no sound, grabby breaks, the steering wheel is shaped weird, and Ford puts switches in weird places. It’s bad without being interesting in any way
1:26:27 I am not 100% sure but seems like US got a different F3X series. My F32 has been great and quality was much better than E92. Front end rigidity was always done properly on F32, even before LCI. Steering feel is non existent but other than that it is quite a good car. Hard to find a better car with same practicality (trailer hitch, AWD, good trunk spce)
Yeah I was a little confused on that one as well. I've owned both and, other than steering feel, I prefer the F cars. My E90 330i wouldn't let you heel and toe...
Also, on the list: perhaps the effort to go through the list of the 3000 plus cars you drove and, for lack of a better word, "sanitize" it, would be worth if turned into a book.. I would so read that instead of the myriad of crappy car books that are a dime a dozen..
I think Derek should run for president. No offense Jason, but with all of that talk of speeding in school zones, I might be just a little bit uncomfortable with your finger on the button.
Oh, I lost it. That was Randy Ad-Libbing, and then of course, worrying that people might think he actually ISN'T vaccinated. (He believes in science, as far as I can tell.) He's very, very funny.
I don't think, if given the option between three sports cars of my choosing, that any one of them would be a Ferrari. They just don't offer enough appeal. I also shudder to think of the maintenance bills for them. One of the cars would 100% be a 1st gen NSX Type-R, because it's my favorite, then the second two are less solidly set. I'd probably get an AMG GT C from the last model year of it, because I think it's an absolute stunner and because it can hardly be considered just a GT car once AMG has had time tinkering with the suspension. The final car would be hard to say, since the NSX is the most reliable, the GT C would threaten to kill me if I turned off the electronic stability control, but I still don't have a particularly practical car (if such a thing could even be considered for a sports car). I'm just not sure when Tesla will ever release their new take on the Roadster. Maybe a Lotus Evija qualifies? I mean, it's a hypercar, which is a subset of the superset of supercars, which are a subset of the superset of sports cars. I just want an electric car for the convenience of daily driving around town and within commute distance. Edit: apparently I missed the qualifier of "new". In that case, the Evija stays, the NSX gets replaced with a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS, and the AMG GT C gets replaced with something else that wants to rip my face off when you turn off the safety features, so maybe the CT5-V Blackwing? I'd get a sports sedan out of it.
Has Jason ever explained why he dislikes the S2000? It seems really odd considering most people consider it to be like a sharper handling Miata with a better engine, the best shifter ever, but worse steering.
@@nathanchildress5596 It's a damn shame when you look at the engineering into the frame. Also, it has some of the worst packaging I've ever seen in a vehicle, zero storage.
It was gorgeous. It didn't drive all that well (terribly unrefined 4-banger; though the Turbo was quick). Packaging disaster, crappy interior, roof that made you get out and walk around the car six times to erect. Put an LS in one, and I want it - but otherwise, it's got nothing on a Miata.
Don’t know if any other commenter already said this, but you have he rolls Royce/Bentley story backwards. VW bought both Rolls and Bentley, but when they did that, they didn’t know the rights to the name were owned by the aerospace Rolls Royce business. BMW quietly snuck in and bought the rights to the name. Later VW sold bmw the physical facilities as well and fully divorced the two brands
Derrek seemed to get personally angry when speaking about the 355. Somewhere between the frustration of dealing with the gum chewing "customer service phone rep" whos having a conversation with someone else while actively listening to you at the moment you are having to defend yourself for daring to say "excuse me" then repeating yourself and retelling the story of someone kicking your cat
Camissa, your mother didn't want to stop you from buying an E30. She just didn't think you were ready for it. Giving a kid all they want as their first car -- straight path to them growing up entitled. You have to work for things you want (just like when you drive a car for enjoyment), otherwise you just won't appreciate it. I'm not saying every kid would become entitled, but that's a rule of thumb.
Yes, the R1 motorcycle has had a crossplane crank for years. To better answer the quesiton flat and cross plane cranks really own work on 4 or 8. However there is typically zero advantage to a cross plane crank on a 4 cylinder. The reason Yamaha did it for the R1 was the power stroke pulses are distributed unevenly ( 270° 180° 90° 180°) VS a flat plane that is distributed evenly (power stroke every 180*)
Jason has the Rolls Royce Bentley BMW Audi story the wrong way around VW/Audi brought the Rolls Royce car company which included Rolls Royce / Bentley cars. However Rolls Royce Motors licensed the name of Rolls Royce from Rolls Royce the aero engine company (once all the same company but now separate). BMW had a joint venture with Rolls Royce aero engines and used this leverage to get Rolls Rolls Aero engines to withdraw the license to use the name on cars from Rolls Royce the car company and sell the license to BMW instead.
Mike Olney Are there many other places around the world that generate as many motorsport drivers as Scotland, in a area 100x100 miles as my wee country has,. Jackie Stewart. I have some question to people who have more experience than I do: anyone else that is disappointed with the engine in the E46 325i? (M54B25 engine, euro spec if that makes a difference) I used to have one, and the biggest drawback was the engine character, or maybe I should say throttle tuning. The response felt delayed. And giving half or full throttle didn’t feel like that much of a difference. It didn’t feel like it lacked torque or power, more like you got all of it at just half throttle. Are they all like that? What about the 320i and 330i? Are the M52 engines in the E36 with a mechanical throttle body better? As far as I know the M52TU engines have both an electronic and a mechanical throttle as a backup, however that is set up, could the 323i or 328i E46 with the M52TU engines be the sweet spot? Or maybe the E36, does the interior tend to hold up better in cold climates?
the problem with non enthusiasts buying electric cars is the fact that, for them, an EV is a sport(s/y) car. Non enthusiasts do not care about how a car corners, brakes.. how a car feels is not even on the table... no, they are simply reacting to two things: 1. acceleration 2. trend all evs get magna cum laude on these two characteristics; so, the non enthusiasts keep buying them more and more because, from their perspective, for the same 45k, they get an electric "sports" car that is even eco(which, of course it is not!), while the range of ICE cars at that price point are: A. not that attractive and B. not that sporty(not accelerative enough to support the idea of sporty for the average joe); that's why EVs are winning...and, as long as they can make them faster(from an acceleration pov) than the ICEs, the latter slowly will dissapear. edit. and I wish I knew how to fight that.. but.. I don't so, all I can do is watch from the sideline, driving my ICE sporty car(slower accelerative than a model 3 tesla.. but not slower on a canyon road type of driving).

My 740i MSport is still the all time favorite car I've ever owned and the Q45 is surprisingly more entertaining. I feel it's exactly the luxury car an engineer would build. It's the only car I stand on more often is my C5 corvette.
My E38 makes sense on face value. My Corvette also makes on face value. A Q45t make NO sense until you drive it. Then it totally makes sense. It's the only way I've found to tickle myself and I love it!! Cheap to buy, cheap to run, and as reliable as a cold creating snot! I'm on my 3rd because I'm totally addicted to the giggle.
The perfect escape from my boring morning zoom meeting 🤌🏽
As an owner of a E90 335i and a GT350R this Q&A makes me feel validated lol

Hot tip for you Derek: Peugeot 206 RC, 1050kg, 177PS, great steering feel, revs to 7300. Rough but strong engine, great Recaros.
Once again, another great episode. Information. Entertainment. Autoexperiential. 😄
Better alternative to a classic Mini: first or second gen Sprite or first gen Midget with a 1275 and ribcase trans (common easy swaps). You wear them like a pair of shorts and the movement is telepathic
Or get a first gen MR2, if you want something better in every way for less money.
Better is subjective. The first gen Mister 2 will probably handle better but then you have to look at it.
Super duper depressed but this makes the day a little better
Glad to help!
Yess was waiting for this before starting dishes!🎉
bro how many dishes do you have to clean?
Week of dishes for the family and a baby shower. Don’t tell me to clean my dishes as they get dirty. I clean them when I have time. What are you my wife? Don’t judge me. I can’t handle this pressure, I’m going to the store to get milk. I will be back in two hours. 😂

Jason can you please give some automotive book recommendations. I like to think I know a decent bit about the history of my favorite cars but I have always been blown away by the stories and info you have picked up through certain books
- I also would love a 450 SEL 6.9 I think that would be such a cool car to own!
thank you for making my drive from the bay to La less boring
Thanks Cammisa for turning me on to M539 Restorations, I've been watching SO many of his videos lately.

Was thinking about selling my NA miata to buy a Z4 ,think I'll keep it now...thanks guys
They're different kinds of cars to serve slightly different purposes, honestly. I don't think many people are going to be cross-shopping the two. Here's an ex-Spec Miata driver spotlighting his Z4 M Coupe, for one perspective. I think more recently he's been toying with the idea of selling it, though: ua-cam.com/video/DImA1KI4HHo/v-deo.html
He's got a pretty nuts NB worth checking out, too, and has been really dialing in his S2000 lately.

You’re making the right decision I think. Any good straight 6 would be heavier and more money, and those stock V6s are a pain to work on. Cool car man
If you're also continuing to keep a 300zx alive that's pretty cool. Not a lot left and an LS does suit the character of the car
I absolutely love it, but if I ever decide to sell it, what would you recommend as a replacement?
a V12 Vantage S 7-speed, of course!
Ah crap missed getting a Q in to get a A.
I would love to see an episode about
Magna Steyr Graz.

The way you describe the F355 sounds just like my TVR S series "it feels like a group of parts". Except it sounds great.
Hyphen and I share two “short list” cars: Fulvia and Galaxie. The first one I expected, the Galaxie not so much.

I hear all the love for the gr86/brz. Dimensionally nearly the same as a c4 Corvette, would you tell consider a c4 Corvette as a good weekend toy?
It's a bit... heavy-handed and unrefined, but sure! Sounds good, quick. I'd get a ZR-1 tho. That nooooiiissse!
I do like this. 👍
The 190E HVAC wins for me because it has 2 temperature controllers which work better than any dual zone climate control I ever encountered.

Also please do an episode on how Porsche nearly bought VW ❤

any 3 dial HVAC system is the best.1 for temp dial. 1 for fan position 1 for fan speed.
I have a fun question
If Jason could punish Hyphen by giving the worst car for him to drive forever, what it would be ? And vice-versa

Hey Jason on the subject of the Genesis video, how badly did you almost crack when Randy said he wasn’t vaccinated? Was that part of the script?
There’s only one question for Hyphen
Trains or cars?
Has Jason ever explained why he dislikes the S2000? It seems really odd considering most people consider it to be like a sharper handling Miata with a better engine, the best shifter ever, but worse steering.
Most likely weight to size ratio and steering.
He said it’s too buttoned down in an earlier episode
Guys... are we missing the Solstice? Was it any good? Looks interesting...
The Solstice looks cool, but it’s way heavier and worse than a Miata. More of a cruiser that looks sporty
@@JasonCammisa ...an honor to be replied by you. Thank you Jason.
Hyphen forgot that he also has the Muira...
If hyphen doesn't like the interior quality of the F355, why is he ok with it in the E36 M3s?
Go look at a 20k mile F355 interior and then look at a 20k mile E36 M3 interior. Also an F355 costs 10x as much as an E36 M3.
Derrek seemed to get personally angry when speaking about the 355. Camissa, your mother didn't want to stop you from buying an E30. She just didn't think you were ready for it. 1:06:40 yamaha claims to make an i4 crossplane...

How can you go through 94 years of your life without knowing how to clap? :P
the problem with non enthusiasts buying electric cars is the fact that, for them, an EV is a sport(s/y) car. Non enthusiasts do not care about how a car corners, brakes.. how a car feels is not even on the table... no, they are simply reacting to two things:
1. acceleration
2. trend
all evs get magna cum laude on these two characteristics; so, the non enthusiasts keep buying them more and more because, from their perspective, for the same 45k, they get an electric "sports" car that is even eco(which, of course it is not!), while the range of ICE cars at that price point are: A. not that attractive and B. not that sporty(not accelerative enough to support the idea of sporty for the average joe); that's why EVs are winning...and, as long as they can make them faster(from an acceleration pov) than the ICEs, the latter slowly will dissapear.
edit. and I wish I knew how to fight that.. but.. I don't so, all I can do is watch from the sideline, driving my ICE sporty car(slower accelerative than a model 3 tesla.. but not slower on a canyon road type of driving).
