Build a BIGGER BARTOP ARCADE - FULL LENGTH AND FREE PLANS!

- Finally here is the video for the Bigger Bartop Arcade. This build was a request and required some creative designing to fit the specs we were going for.
I combined all 6 videos into one long film for those that did not want the 'royalty free music' played during the video. Sometime music can be a distraction so I will only use it in future videos if I think it belong. Please ask questions about the video but don't forget to check the links below. Many of my pages (build plans page, etc) have all the information you may need! Don't be afraid to read the comments below for similar questions. Can you tell I'm a school teacher? haha
I have edited the videos to follow 99% of the steps I took in building this arcade. Almost every time I pickup a tool or turn a screwdriver you will see it. Most likely in fast motion but it is still there!
Plans are currently available FOR FREE on my website as a DWG Autocad and easy to read and print PDF files!
Similar internals for this build but I've learned a few tricks in the last few years on my own and from comments on past videos. I love building these more than actually using them!

Your video was the push that took me from "I'd like to do this" to "I'm buying wood, filling in gaps in my tool set and going full speed ahead"! Thank you for documenting this process and even more for making the plans available. This will be my most ambitious project yet but being able to watch you do it provided that last bit of confidence needed. Please enjoy the lunch!
Thank you! I am eventualy trying to put out a video showing how to do this type of project with only hand tools as well to give options when the big tools are not available. Send a message anytime if you think it will help!
@@WeBuildStuffI would love for a custom one. I have a pandora 30s.
planing to build my own arcade cabinet and your video is such a great tutorial. really love this. thank you so much.

Great job!! Love it!

Stumbled onto this randomly, may make a cabinet for our work one of these days for the lounge area. Thanks for the inspiration!
Most excellent video from start to finish. Really appreciate the warp speed to demonstrate the steps you took along with the excellent narration. I definitely want to take on this project and only things I may change is making my version a full console versus tabletop version and using a monitor vs TV set though I have not seen any 4K monitors. Anyway, again an excellent tutorial and am going to look through your previous projects and await new ones.
Just wanted to say thanks. You video was the inspiration I used on my build. I expanded you bigger bartop and made it an even bigger bartop, using a 32" TV as the monitor. I just scaled your plans slightly to accommodate and I think it looks and more importantly ... works great. So great work!
Great to hear! If you find me on Instagram i would love to see some pics of the finished arcade!
Really enjoyed this build. And your attention to your wood cuts really shows. Hoping to make my own soon and will be watching and rewatching this video a lot. Thanks.
Much appreciated. Feel free to ask questions if you have any!
Thanks for the walkthrough and the plans, just started yesterday mine and is getting great
good amount of detail, very clear and well paced explanation - thanks for this one!
Thank you so much for this insightful build. I just finished making my cabinet yesterday. It is a bartop with a full base on the bottom, so I can convert from bartop to full sized machine. Couldn't have done it without people like you, making these great DIY videos!
Awesome. Find me on Instagram and send pics of your build!
Glad the video could help!
I built one that looks EXACTLY like that with a pre cut Ebay flatpack. Using a pandoras box dx! Mine is identical except for t moulding but used a computer monitor. Love it.
This is a fantastic guide. I'm already well on the way to building my first ever cabinet with help from your tutorials. Being a novice, I admit I have run into problems on the way though. I also didn't expect to have to buy so many spray cans. But it's all worth it in the end. Thanks!
spray can is still cheaper than 4 gallons of fancy house paint! I usually use 2-3 spray cans for a cabinet. I would love to get an automotive style spray gun!
Thankyou so much for this amazing video i've been wanting to build my own machine but not everyone gave the whole setup. this is very informative and helpful so that I could set up my own and modify it.
Thanks for the comment! These plans are only meant to give a starting point and hopefully you can make a rad one!
Thank You for this long video with all the steps we need to build it. I'm going to build mine and use your video as a guide. ^_^
Thanks for the kind words. I tried to put as much detail as I could. There are a lot of little things I would change and it would be cool to do some fancier paint. I wouldn't use the same plexiglass screen cover since it is so reflective and I would have gotten a different light system for the marquee. Every build gets better
love those colors on the Player-input boards
Awesome build. Thank you very much for showing us all the details to follow and make our own. This is just kickass.👍🤙🕹🎮
One of the best videos iv seen on youtube regarding Building an arcade cabinet( and iv seen alot of them) thanks
That means a lot thanks!
I know everyone has their own style of building but I wanted to show every step I would show my students.
If you can share the video that would be much appreciated 😁
I'd say the clearest explanation of an Arcade Cabinet Build on UA-cam - well deserved praise. I've just ordered a flat-pack bartop from an Australian Company here because I simply don't have all the tools. I have all the electrical components, Raspberry Pi though. Thank-you Mike - a really great video mate!
I really appreciate it. I know the final product is nothing fancy on the outside but I do enjoy the process of making a starting point people can improve on.
@@WeBuildStuff I prefer function over form which you did so well here. Once you have it working you can pretty it up with vinyl stickers, nicer lighting solution, USB extensions so you can plug in PS4 / XBOX controllers etc). That's what I'm going to do with mine but yours is perfect as is to be honest! Thanks mate.

Very nice build, love the colors, they match my buddy's Formula Mazda race car! One thing to consider is a way to hit a button to shut down the PI before turning off power. The SD doesn't like the power being just shut off. :) Mixing games, fun and teaching. Perfect!
In the menu there is a shutfown option and I have built reset/shutdown buttons in the past by wiring directly to the headers of the pi or soldering to two holes on the PCB. I haven't done that recently but it shows in one of my othet videos 😁
Thanks for watching!

N64 Controller = 15 buttons.
4 for the DPad directions.
1 for the start button.
1 for A.
1 for B.
4 for c buttons.
1 for Left Bumper.
1 for Right Bumper.
1 for Z button.
&
1 analog stick.
Your arcade setup... an analog stick, which is more like a dpad if we are being honest, and 6-8 buttons.
Why are you trying to play N64 games with it? Hahahaha.
Also, for air flow, you should use 3 fans minimum.
2 intake.
1 out.
Or perhaps just using a big intake fan and a smaller out fan, this will have a similar effect.
Doing this will create positive air pressure inside the cabinet and will ensure air gets to all the components.
Great video though. Thanks. Always fun to watch you build and talk us through it.
I'm about to embark on this as a summer project, and this is the best instructional video that I've seen.
I am thinking of doing a modular version, i.e. having the bartop version sitting on a separate base unit, so that I could switch from full size to bartop arcade so I can make easily move it around if needed between different locations.
In order to do this right, would you suggest...
To follow the full size plans but cut just below the floor of the bartop, or to make the bartop and then create a separate box base?
To add some more stability to the bottom base cabinet to keep it more rigid - does it need it?
Raise the bottom floor of the bartop, so there was some space below (out of sight) to hook it over some guides protruding up from the bottom cabinet to keep it in place
or how would you best suggest connecting the top and bottom?
Hope that makes sense! Would love to know what you think.
Hi Paul. Did you end up starting your project?
@@WeBuildStuff RIP Paul's project 😭
Great works!!!👍
Great tutorial. One little nitpick is the action buttons clusters should be crammed much closer together, so your fingers don't have to unnaturally spread so much. Thanks for sharing.
All personal preference! Design for what works for you!
If I had them any tighter I would have difficulty with the retaining nuts and microswitches/cables being too close together on the inside. 😁
Your work is very very neat and clean.the work you done looks very beautiful it's a god gift to you the way you make and explain knowbody do this in my country India I am really your freind and want to become your students
Very cool! Enjoyed the build process. Thanks for sharing. I've been working on a mame cab for about 10 years. Built the frame out of 2x4s, have front kickplate, CP, and marquee in place, but still need to do the side panels, and back door for it. It's bloody heavy. LOL.
Thanks for watching!
I built a full size cab last year and even with casters it was a pain to move around!
Ah, yes. I knew it was going to be heavy as a fridge, so I made sure to put large, but recessed casters on my machine. It's so massive, even on the wheels, it doesn't want to move, when being played. Lots of inertial mass. :)
@@ThomasGrillo But i bet it's fun!
Oh, yeh. It's fun, but the PC finally died, and I need to put a Retro Pi, or something in it. It's a 2 player cab, with a spinner, 2 track balls, sticks, 7 buttons per player, and 2 pinball flipper buttons. unfortunately, I didn't think to put the holes for them, on the sides of the CP. LOL. Just need to cut out the coin door hole, and slip in a fake coin door.
I am so glad you used nut inserts, I have seen people build cabs and drill through the side panels to insert bolts, this really annoys me as it is just laziness.
I have built a couple of bartops very similar to yours but I prefer a 1.75" bezel and a 25" 4:3 monitor, I have been thinking about designing a bartop candy cab but can't make my mind up whether to 3d print or do some difficult routing for the front fascia panels, actualy thinking about it this could be the perfect excuse to buy a CNC router
Nothing beats real material vs 3d printed plastic!
That being said I love my 3d printer for prototyping!
I'm so motivated to do this!!!! Thank you!!!
Thanks for watching! Drop any questions during your build!

And recommendations on screen size and type can I use a tv or should I use a computer monitor?
@@anthonyhollinger832 I think I used a. 28" cheap TV for this project. I went to my local big box store and found a cheap Samsung screen that had easily accessible HDMI ports and a power button that I could mod if needed
Would you ever consider making plans for a Nintendo switch arcade stand ?
@@anthonyhollinger832 i would have to own one first to be motivated for that 😉
BAD ASS! I watched the whole thing! I'm going to be assembling a MicroCenter 3/4 size cabinet possibly tomorrow (4/9/2021) to house a PC-based arcade game I like playing and this video compilation of you building this cab from scratch was very satisfying to watch! I don't have nor have access to the tools you use for these projects, but I'm sure the kit I got from MicroCenter is well made (as I've seen many others build it). I'll have to either deal with some overhang from my game's controller, or mod the button panel piece of the cab, but I'll make it work for my needs. Thanks for posting this!
Thanks for leaving such a great comment. It means a lot!
@@WeBuildStuff Sure thing! Not that I can afford it but do you make custom builds for people? I was enamored by your craftsmanship and I might have missed it if you said it's for a client and not just to show your students how it's done. Oh yeah the sfx were silly and being the immature 37 year old that I am whenever you said "nuts" I internally chuckled haha.

thanks for watching!
Ho provveduto alla donazione. Cordialmente saluti! Ottimo lavoro!

Great build, i really like it. Shame, but i dont have space for an arcade cabinet. I would make some modification to the LED strip mounting: alu LED rails for the mounting, opal diffusor to "hide" the invidual LED modul pieces and for better light spreading. The other thing is that the passive heatsinks are not enough for the Pi. Up to N64 is enough, but if u want to play PS1 or GameCube games, then you need more cooling. The 52Pi cooler is Rpi3b+ and 4/4b compatible.
That's the fun part about doing your own build. Design the way you want it and make it happen within your means and budget. My videos are only meant as a starting point. Customizing projects is always more fun! Thanks for watching!
Extremely well done!! Thank you, you earned a loyal subscriber. Question: would it be possible to mount a 52" LCD in similar manner (in a bigger box of course).
Any size screen can work but with the weight You would probably want both the mounting I did as well as a VESA support inside the box. I've included DWG plans that can be easily modified for this project. Thanks for the comment and let me know if you have any other questions!
Thank You !!!!!
Nice work
You dont need to drill a hole for the remote infrared. You can engrave the wood to a very thin layer from inside and it will work. It won't be seen outside.
Also.
Use full metal case for the raspberry and you won't need fans.
It will even be significantly cooler than using heatsinks
The fans were also to help with airflow for the screen as I have had them overheat inside cabinets before. Good tips!
Those are nice fans. I was going to use them to act as a solder smoke wick, but it's now cooling my cable modem. I live in MS, so it gets super hot and disgusting in the summer and noticed my internet was dipping as a result. SO, I have that janky setup. Which I might switch out for cheap laptop cooling mats and sandwich the router in between them. Since right now nothing is keeping them stacked.
Cool thanks for watching
Extremely well done video editing, tutorial and narration! One of the best indeed.
The only thing I´ll do, to the project be perfect, was cut the beard to that teacher... ... ... :P

excellent appriciated
Great and detailed build! Question: Do I have to be millimetry precise? I see some value like 74.07 and was wondering if this .07 is necessary or I can round up to .1. Thanks!
As long as your measurements are consistent, pieces fit, etc.... I round to the nearest 1/2 millimeter and just make sure it matches both sides.
I'd like to do a new design that just uses the thickness of a ruler to layout lines without needing to measure as much. I've posted my autocad design for whoever wants to make it their own😊
That is awesome dood.
Thanks for watching!!
perfect video
Your video made me build my first cabinet. Any recommendations for 28" display from current tech? What aspect ratio is best for raspberry pi arcade games.
I'm always budget conscious for my personal builds so I usually go to whatever local electronic store has TVs and buy something on sale in the size I want. For retro games just about any new tv works. I also like to have something with audio aux out to hook up extra speaks and I like having button access or a way to aim a tv remote control.
I got covered the woodworking part, but I'll use lots of your recomendations about measuring and the use of t-nuts from now on. I used to use screws/glue for everything and then taking it apart was always a pain. I was too scared of the wiring part, specially the buttons, but you made it easy to follow (do you have a item list you bought for this?). I guess this is my new project to keep me busy during the quarantine. many thanks! and sorry for the bad english.

But I don't know how to relate what I need to draw to my monitor size??? Sorry, probably basic question.
