    For the sake of a perfect compare you could’ve put and FTZ on the z7 for image quality tests at the very least.

    It would have been interesting to compare the "kit" 24-70 f/4 in that group. I own the 24-70 2.8 E and G versions which are a lot more expensive than any of these lenses, particularly the E version that I find is slightly behind the older G version that does not have VR. But every test I have tried the $600(when buying a Z camera) f/4 Z mount thumps both F mount 24-70. The difference is seen in the center where they all are good but the corners at f4, the difference is so obvious no pixel peeping is needed. There are many reasons to get a Z camera but the Z mount lenses is one of the most important. Same with the 14-30 f/4 Z mount compared to the more expensive 14-24 2.8. The 50mm 1.8 S is the sharpest lens I have ever seen in the mid focal lengths.

    The Tamron G2 series is just killing it. With a six year warranty to boot! I did a head to head with the 70-200mm 2.8 G2 against the Nikon 7-200mm 2.8 FL w/D500. No wonder Nikon is losing market share to them. Tamron beats Nikon right out of the Camera and into Capture One Pro

I have tried it out on video and yes, you can hear it auto focus. it's not too loud but it's there. if you are doing video alot I'd suggest going with the S series Z mount from Nikon. bit more expensive but great lens, sharper then the Tamron edge to edge but most importantly, silent in vid... or as silent as you are gonna get right now. If you use outboard mic, it's no issue though so... IQ on the Tamron is amazing, especially for the price. good build, feels good in hand. love the lens.

    It's been a few years now since I bought my Tamron 24-70 2.8 when I first saw Matt's do a comparison review on the 24-70. LOVE THIS LENS and I would purchase another if ever I need to. Yes, I should maybe have it calibrated But I will say I have shot many a concert and many a model with this lens and on point every time unless operator error. Compared to my husband's Nikon 24-70 2.8 it to be well worth my investment. LOVE my lens and would not trade it for the price in which I purchased it at almost 1/2 the cost of the Nikon that was purchased and yes I would do it again. Oh and I believe it is the Tamron SP 24-70 F2.8.

    I have my Nikon 24-70 G version on D850 and still love the results.Not sure why your beloved one is not capable anymore,or you feel it is getting old.Unless you compare it to hands-down Z version,it is very capable of doing the job.I believe it is getting old on paper,not in photo shoots.If that was true,Nikon might stop selling that! If you are not on landscape/nature shooting style that needs corner to corner sharpness,this lens by far is to go with.

    Would LOVE to see more comparisons between the f-mount lenses and z (s line) mount lenses! I have the Z6, but have yet to purchase a native Z lens because they are SO expensive. But if the quality of the f-mount ftz adapted lenses is COMPARABLE, considering the price of the z mount, to the z mount, I will stick around with Nikon. But Sony opening up their tech to sigma and tamron allowing for faster production of high quality Sony E Mount lenses has me wondering if I should convert to Sony.

    Nice review, always a joy to see Matt work with Steph. Just a limitation in the diversity of shots. Because of the lighting they will not bring out chromatic aberration nor flare and those to me are more important than the last bit of sharpness. If AF had problems staying locked on Steph in the red jacket, then I would also like to see what AF does when there are several people in the frame.

    • @BradMorrisKA3YAN
      @BradMorrisKA3YAN 5 років тому

      Joel, I have both and this is my opinion. Because the 70-200 is so much longer, when I have it on the sling strap, it rubs my side and sometimes switches the VC on and off, or one of the other switches. Because the 24-70 is so much shorter, I haven't had that problem. The switches are practically identical though.

    I had a Sigma 18-35mm for crop and it was impossible to calibrate for my D7200. If I calibrated one set of distances to one focal length, it would offset at a different focal length so it was basically a prime lens with zoom functionality but you could only focus accurately at one focal length at a time. So I only used that lens with live view focusing mode and it was a bad experience. The images were sharp as hell but for anything other than tripod shooting or very slow handheld live view shooting it was useless.

    Hi Matt, appreciated the video, but couldn't spot the link to download the files ? I also agree with you overall, I moved from Nikon original 24-70 non VR to Tamron 24-70 G2 when I got the D800, glad to know that when I go Z mount later on, the 24-70 F/2.8 is even better than what I have now, Cheers.

    These Z Mount Nikkors are optically great. They will not age well though with delicate OLED displays. Pricey. The oldest 24-70 non-VR Nikkor is indeed the best on F Mount. The Tamron is impressive I have the 15-30 G2 and I’d seriously consider the 24-70 G2 big brother. I’d also pass on the Sigma.

    I know it was not part of this review, but do you feel the 24-70 f4 s kit lens is just as sharp as the tamron 24-70 f2.8? Trying to figure out the best route to go this fall when i get the Z7. Just get the body and tamron which is only a couple hundred more, or Z7 with that kit lens?

    Love your videos. I have a Nikon d750 and looking at either the a Nikon 24-70 non-VR or Tamron 24-70 G2. I do my Nikon glass. I’m worried about not having VR(the VR is out of my budget). Sometimes I’m not the steadiest, do you think not having VR would be an issue or should I just go with the Tamron G2? I shoot travel, landscapes and street, some night. Thank you

    #AskMatt - Hi Matt. I've not owned an auto-focus lens except wayyyy back in the '90s, (a 70-210 Nikon lens [not the D variant] but I have no idea if it ever needed any form of calibration). I was wondering, what's all this need to calibrate the focusing on these newer auto focus lenses? Is it the autofocusing itself that's 'off' or is it something to do with focus distance or is it something else entirely? What should we know (calibration wise) prior to using a modern autofocus lens and why do they need calibrating?

    • @jasonandrews7355
      @jasonandrews7355 5 років тому

      Modern camera bodies let us be more precise. Focus adjustment on old bodies would be nice, but just wasn't feasible.
      Also as sensors become higher resolution, it gets easier to notice slightly missed focus, so adjustments are more useful.

    • @Noriuslephotographe

      Good for you you had a good copy, i am taking about 8 photographers in my group I personally had my 2 first copies with the motor defective ( not focusing at all) and my 3 rd had ri return it because of 6 out of 10 pictures where out of focus! The other 7 fellow photographers had problems with it ( 2 of them motor problems) if you have a great copie good for you .. i mean this lens is so plastique and cheap for me that never again will I buy ( and thats my choice) any tameron! Maybe the sigma is not as well rated but it’s my first copy and it went through 10 000 + photos... and 99.9% of the time the pictures are tack sharp! ( my fellow friends also changed to sigma) but one and guess who had to return it again last week ( the 3rd time) well ... enough said!

    Firstly the model is absolutely gorgeous!!! What a babe! Regards the lenses, obviously the Z is the best as its the most up to date set up with the mirror less camera which Nikon are really pushing. But really the price hike between that and the Tamron is definitely NOT worth it. Theres not a lot in picture quality to justify the outlay. If mirror less really takes off (and its still 50/50 as to whether it will) then in 2 or 3 years time there will be a lot more better and cheaper mirror less cameras and lenses. Myself I'll stick with the D850 & buy the Tamron lens, maybe two with the money saved.
