I felt happy to come across your interview on DD Urdu Channel and know about your life time devotion to harmonium. My congratulations to you on being awarded Padmashri by the Govt. of India. In this interview you have referred to the name of Pandit Manohar Chimote from Maharashtra as the one who also gave his contribution to lifting up of ban on the harmonium imposed by AIR. Being disciple of late Pandit Manohar Chimote for more than 3 decades, I had the fortune being associated with all activities relating the promotion of harmonium (which we call it as SAMVADINI.) as a solo instrument capable of being played with its own identity . In 1996, myself along with my guru bandhu Advocate Madhav Paranjape filed a writ petition in Mumbai High Court requesting for an immediate lifting of ban on the harmonium by AIR. Seeing the merit in out petition, the Court passed an immediate interim order lifting the ban on the harmonium. The copy of the order is available as it is in the public domain. As you know Pandit Manohar Chimote ( 1929-2013) was the only harmonium player who did not treat harmonium as a supporting/ accompanying instrument but as a solo instrument only. He devoted his entire life in developing harmonium as solo instrument capable of being played as per Hindustani ragdari sangeet in the same manner as the sitar, santoor, flute. or sarod. After having Indianised the harmonium he named it as SAMVADINI. Today the the word SAMVADINI is used synonymous with harmonium by all and one. But it is not so in reality. Samvadini as developed, played and taught by Pandit Chimote is different from normal harmonium. To continue the legacy of solo SAMVADINI vadan, we disciples of Pandit Manohar Chimote ( Bhanu Joshi, Madhav Paranjape, Rajendra Vaishampayan, Sarangdhar Sathe, Milind Joshi ) are actively engaged in Solo Samvadini Vadan. We look forward to have frequent interactions with an experienced harmonium player like you.
