reading the comments section seems like a lot of people say that Kali/Arnis/Eskrima is an ineffective self-defense martial art. but judging from everything ive seen and heard of the art is that it was never designed to be used in self-defense. i think its actually designed to kill. basically a “kill him first using speed and angles before he kills you”. no wonder this guy, after dropping the other said “now i can finish and do what i have to do”. If im not wrong, this martial art is purely offense and counter with no time for defense in mind cuz it is designed to kill in seconds not wanting to prolong the confrontation.

you are correct :D I trained a little bit of this when I was in the philippines. As he said that the stick is respresentive of machete. This art is for combat. I didnt get to train with knifes tho , little time :(
When come home again to norway, and like one week after I came home I was surprised. There were tryouts for escrima, but I was little disapointed it was washed down version :P In norway it is not allowed to have that brutal trainning/forms here. Every fighting sport if they want to go pro, they have to move and train in another country :P it sucks... :(

The most underestimated, but the most devastating technique in arnis de mano: the eye poke. An eskrimador told me once, he used to carry a small plastic pouch full of red hot chilli powder in his pocket and he would crush it and coat his finger tips on it covertly. Imagine beibvbpoked in the eye with fjngers coated with chilli powder lol.

I've seen this used in real combat about 40 years ago. Scariest thing I've seen, still give me chills down my spine up to this day. We were playing back then when someone came running to the village shouting that a certain farmer goes "huramentado" to settle a land dispute. So we ran to the scene and saw an old man shouting for our neighbor to come out, armed with "sundang" on his right hand and the sheath on his left. He has this fearsome reputation of coming from a lineage of eskrimador with "anting anting". So a couple of able bodied villagers intercepted him, all armed with sundang. I remembered how fearless and confident he was, using both his blade and sheath to attack and defend. The fight was so quick, he effortlessly killed 9 men that day including my uncle who merely tried to help. Deadliest sh*t I've witnessed my entire life. It was only interrupted when another relative of ours aimed a "paltik" revolver at him, he fired but the damn thing failed. The hysterical women rushed in to check the butchered bodies, most were still alive but losing blood quickly. Realizing that the remaining 4 men have no longer intention to fight, the old man just walked away. Nobody even attempted to run after him out of fear. We never saw him and his family again. Rumors that time said he escaped somewhere in Cebu and Negros. The experience hunted me for years, especially if I remember how that that little dirt road got drenched in blood and the vivid memories of those huge stab, hack, and slice wounds on the victims.

@@ryanli5010 For you saying that it wouldnt work(I guess you might believe that nothing would work), just pray that you do not get caught, ganked or cornered. Running is the self defense with the highest survival rate, for sure. But if for example you need to stand your ground and defend your family, you need to learn or practice at least anything at all. Theres nothing fancy in Kali. When I was in the Philippines, almost everyone has a knife, and they know how to use it. Nothing beats experience and in an environment where you always mentally process on how to defend yourself or others that you love. A Stay safe.

The long distance stick fighting seems logical but the short knife defense just seems like a lot fancy non sense. Who is going to have their hand out for that long, to where you allow someone to cut your own throat?

As an Escrima practitioner its not about defense, the essence of it is to kill your opponent by countering their attacks as quickly as possible.
Strike them without even realizing your next moves, that's why it consists lots and lots of hand movements
Techniques and forms are not likely be applicable for life or death situations

There are only two types of knife fight. One is to show off or intimidate, making the knife intentionally visible. Two is the one that has the intent to kill. Let me compare.
The first one is like - Stab > wait for opponent to counter > (insert surprised pikachu 😮) > watch the opponent do the theatrics >"wtf just happened"
The second one... STAB > STAB > STAB > STAB > STAB > STAB > STAB > STAB > STAB

A knife attach is really simple to understand. Don't participate by doing anything other than trying to escape. In all of these videos I see the same thing. The attacker seems to forget that he/she has two hands also. A real knife attack will have the attacker using his second hand to hit and punch also. It looks more like this ua-cam.com/video/E61jnJe_1SI/v-deo.html.
The point of knowing how to not get an artery cut is simply to allow you the opportunity to escape. Stop believing there are defenses and disarms. Don't participate and RUN.

Done watching the video. . Then I decided to read all the comments, you know just to waste my time "LOL" .. I saw a keyboard warrior discrediting the effectiveness of Kali. Saying that it will not work in a real life situation. End of conversation brother. Im a practitioner of kali, a living proof that it actually works. It happened way back 2010 around 2am, going to work. Someone tried to rob me then stabbed me. If im not trained, I could have been dead by now. Again those techniques that are being thought by the master were just used to train your reflexes.
