Let's be fair to my man Tenzin. He's a husband, father to three (and counting) young Air Benders that he is also teaching. He's literally the only Master Air Bender in the world, representative of their culture, a leader in Republic City and the rest of the world, and now he's trying to teach this headstrong teenage girl about Air Bending and Air Bender philosophy.
Tenzin has a lot of pressure on his shoulders. The Air Nomads are one bad day away from being erased from the world. And the world needs Air Benders.

Tenzin is one of LoK's biggest highlights for me. We all love Uncle Iroh, but perfect mentors with limitless patience and wisdom are not that hard to come by in kids' shows, even if he was a peak execution. The fact that Tenzin has just as much to learn from teaching Korra as she does from him makes their relationship so satisfying to watch develop, and really stands out especially against a lot of its contemporaries.

I love how you noticed the difference in earthbending styles, republic city earthbenders use a more light on their feet style that bends smaller rocks
while Korra is trained in more traditional earthbending focused on being unmovable and bending large boulder.
Traditional earthbending is stronger but republic city earthbending causes less collateral damage.

I think what's going on is that only a certain level of bending is legal in a match. Like, they could easily bend more but the amount is limited for a match and a quicker bending style evolved to compensate.

@@madladdie7069 That's certainly true, but throughout the series, I noticed the more light-on-your-feet style used not just by professional benders but by most earth benders in republic city so I think it might also be influenced by just the urban environment of the city where throwing massive boulders isn't as practical.

One of the biggest themes of Korra is the modernization of the world and where that leaves bending, and my favorite example of this is how modern benders use a more modern style akin to MMA that tends to leave behind the more cultural and traditional roots of bending
You can see a clear visible difference in fighting style between the more traditional and modern vendors it's very interesting to watch

This is my issue with a lot of commentators on the show in general. Nothing here, but this comment thread reminded me of these ideas.
I understand the idea of vibing with traditional/pure styles of bending. However, what I don't agree with is when people use this more mma style as a gripe against the show.
I firmly believe that republic city style water, earth, and fire bending is indicative of water, earth, and fire bending culture. It's like kudo, Krav Maga, and jeet kune do. They may take a lot of the same inspiration and even incorporate the best techniques for proper fights into their individual styles. But they are still representative of their own culture. Kudo is still Japanese, like Krav Maga is still Israeli, like jeet kune do is still Chinese.

I haven't watched much of Korra yet, but I'm curious to how this styles will do in actual bender x bender powerhouse fights, without rules or anything... Kind of why I'm not a fan of the Mecha side they seem to take often here.
The reason I'm curious is, old school bending seemed to be about making the most out of the elements, no amount of fancy footwork would save your ass in the Azula x Zuko Agni Kai, or against Boomie and Toph...
Seems to me like a "MMA vs Street Fight" debate that's still up to this day.

It also makes a ton of sense practically. The mark of a powerful bender in ATLA was very often the sheer size of their bending, hurling massive boulders, or unleashing gigantic fireballs. But we see very clearly in LoK's first episode why that's a terrible idea in an urban setting when Korra destroys half a street fighting those gangsters. Bending mastery in Korra's time is about control, precision, and creativity, which ends up making for some _incredible_ fight choreography.

I don't remember if it was ever stated in the show but after looking it up (because I was always confused on this). A team wins a round by gaining the most territory in 3 minutes. A team wins the game by either winning the most rounds or by "Knockout". Knocking all 3 members of the opposing team off automatically wins you the game. So even if the other team wins 2 rounds, a 3rd is played in case Knockout occurs.

Yeah I can't believe I never realised this, but her lack of freedom growing up was probably one of the reasons she struggles with Airbending. It's also the complete opposite of Aang, who has already been around the world by the age of 12.

    • @stevengucum
      @stevengucum Рік тому +2

The problem is not that there is no explanation. The problem is that we don't see her struggle with anything. You can easily see what I mean by looking at a perfect example: Toph (since Korra is basically based on Toph). Toph is a rebel who was limited and vastly underappreciated by her parents. She, as well as Korra, has a natural talant. But, unlike with Korra, we see Toph's struggle with her parents, with her not being able to do what she likes. We see how and why there is so much missunderstanding between her and her parents. One episode was enough for all of this! There is nothing like this with Korra: we just see time skips and have to assume what her relationships with other characters and her feelings were like and that's it. It feels like Korra is like this just because.

    • @emptynight4861
      @emptynight4861 Рік тому +5

@@stevengucum There are similarities, but they aren't the same either. Toph had those restrictions placed on her sure, but even as a child she could see that the rationnelle behind them was baseless. She wasn't the helpless fragile girl that her parents saw her as, so when hiding who she really was didn't work, and when trying to share the real her self with them also didn't work, she made the justified choice to leave them. Korra doesn't have that certainty though. When the white lotus or Tenzin restrict her freedom, the basis is something more along the lines of "the safety/growth of the avatar is more important than (thing you want to do)" which can be much harder to argue with in individual circumstances. Her safety and growth ARE important, and the people making those decisions are sincerely trying to help her achieve that, so rather than a strict opposition forming within her it's a dichotomy of how much she agrees with them vs how much she wants the thing they're restricting her from. And it sucks, because even if they are well-meaning, the way theyve raised her with this logic does a ton of damage to her throughout the series.

@@stevengucum Is that actually a problem though? Good character writing is just making characters behave consistently, they don't have to spell out everything that goes on for it to be true. And they are extremely consistent with the issues she has and how the traumas she experiences affect her. That consistency is what gives insights into the things you're saying they never included, and I'd say the mere fact that we can talk about the deeper motivations of her character at all proves that we got all the information we needed from the show to do so.

So what I love about the scene where Bolin goes over about her fighting style is what is often brought up in modern day martial arts. While traditional styles are fine in a dojo in a real fight or much like in this case sports. I think the best example is much like mixed martial arts where they take the best aspects of a style and utilize it. The more showy or formal aspects of a style are dropped as they leave you very vulnerable in a fight.

I like the conflict in this episode, both Tenzin and Korra have their flaws that lead to issues. Korra is very proud and used to being able to master bending easily, this leaves her impatient when she struggles with air bending and in turn doesn't know how to learn from her faults. Tenzin meanwhile, despite being a master of an element that is about flexibility and approaching problems from different angles, is being inflexible with Korra and keeps trying to approach the issue from the same direction, discipline and patience. And fittingly for air bending, it's only when Korra takes to the basics of air bending is when she approaches the issue from a different angle. And what makes the conflict good is both are able to make peace and admit their own faults that caused the very conflict.

Korra does improve character wise throughout the show. She does some absolutely insane and illogical things sometimes, however I believe it has to do with her upbringing. All the other Avatars were told of their status and power till they were older, more experienced, and mature. Aang only found out early because of the war, and even then, he freaked out and ran. Korra has known since she was in diapers practically; she has been told she is unique, special, and gifted from day 1. That can lead to arrogance and blind frustration whenever ANY difficulty is encountered, and that mindset can only be helped with a huge pile of Humility slapped on.

Pro Bending and Earth Rumble 6 are very different beasts. Though to call it drivel is being rather close minded.
I like the touch with the sleeves. It just immediately shows her as feeling apart and trying to be herself, while Tenzin fails to realize how stifling and rigid he's being.
We saw with the mafia goon that Korra relishes in confronting a direct problem, but the training showed she can be quite light on her feet.
Precisely. Korra wants freedom, craves it, needs it, but even now, far from the compound, she can feel that brief taste of it fading. Tenzin is trying to force his standards on her, and she wants to succeed to be done with the mediation and isolation. Being told to wait after she's waited not only to be taught, but still waits to do something for the world or even for herself in the world.....
This is just continuing to wind her key tighter and tighter. And to hit a road block after smooth roads dives the talented up a wall.
Bolin's attraction is more cringey than I remember, but I last saw it in high school so....
Republic city was founded at the heart of what used to be the oldest Fire Nation colonies. Lands that had been in the Fire Nation's sphere so long that they didn't feel like they wanted to go back to the Earth Kingdom. Add in a ton of immigration, and it's a lot harder to be sure who's what.
You were a sports commentator? Neat! Also, you're going to have a lot to work with in this season.
Toph was queen of Earth Rumble, but this is a whole different game. A limited area, defined boundaries within the ring, set sizes and weights on thrown stones, and padding. You can't rotate the entire arena or burrow under it. You can't anchor your feet. In a more regulated and limited match, different strategies and tactics emerge as meta than the metas in a free for all that ends with knockout or ringout.
I'd be lying if I said Korra didn't have issues, but she's not entirely wrong about Tenzin being a bad teacher. Doesn't mean she was right to lash out, but he isn't being very adaptable.
I mean, you can see how throwing someone new, if conventionally talented and classically trained into the deep end would go wrong. She was trained for battle.
These guards are going to be busted down to mopping, armory upkeep, laundry, and kitchen duties for sure.
Still a long road to improvement, but they're on their ways.

I honestly think Korra is a very likeable character and more relatable than Aang. Aang's main flaw was lacking confidence, which is a good character arc in of itself, but Korra coming into her own and interacting with an ever changing world rather than a fixed one in a poor state is more interesting. Especially since she was raised in a sheltered environment where she was mainly told she could not do something and her only form of release and confidence came through bending. Her power was her place of comfort but in a modern world personal power can only do so much. I would definitely say the shows highs outweigh the lows and she feels very real in her story.

Also Korra has never had freedom then was told by Katara you need to find your own path. Now Tenzen is telling her to confine herself after letting her stay. Right next to the equivalent of New York city a stones throw away. What frustrated country teenager with a rebellious streak wouldn't chafe at it.

I wil say, you blame Tenzin for his inability to train Korra, but her personality is also a complete clash to him. He did say he had other duties on top of training her, which she did FORCE into the situation. Remember that still going forward that she did indeed push herself to do something they weren't ready to do immediately. And it's only been a few days starting.
Second note tho: He's happy she can learn and it works to help her potentially lead to air bending. He's doing what he can to teach someone but it takes them time to find a style that works, and for ego's and personalities to find common ground. They sometimes never show that very little time has passed still.

From a spiritual sense, tenzin has a point. Pro bending makes a big spectacle put of a purely spiritual practice, and prevents innovation due to the limited techniques one can incorporate. You can't exactly use earth and waterbending to their maximum potential when you can only use what is in the arena.

  • @crowhaven895
    @crowhaven895 Рік тому +1

Tenzin is too strict and Korra is too bull-headed, but I can understand both of their situations.
Korra was born with amazing powers, most of which she could access early on. In a world of magical powers, she has more than those who were so blessed to have even one. She knows she is special, but she is also impatient. The responsibility of being the Avatar was placed on her shoulders before she could figure out who she is, and it would seem whenever she can't figure something out she resorts to brute force. Can you imagine trying to teach or discipline a child with that much power.
But I feel mostly for Tenzin. His father was the last Avatar as well as the last airbender before he and his siblings were born. Not only is he the child of the Avatar that ended the 100 year war, he now has to train the new Avatar, the reincarnation of his father. He knew his father was a great man that did so much for the world, but now he has to train the person that is the vessel for his soul. What stress would it be, to lose your father, then have to teach "him" to be as great as "he" was before. The idea of failing the memory and reincarnation of someone so important to his life must be haunting.

It's even worst than a cubicle, it's a changing room, it's supposed to be private as you're basically changing clothes. If the genders were reversed, people would call Korra a creep for barging here and acting like that. But apparently if you're Mako, you're supposed to kneel down to the great avatar, and later you're supposed to be happy to be kissed without your consentment even if you clearly stated you weren't interested and were already with someone. And guess what? Most of the fandom will only blame you for that because growing up in a white lotus camp gives you excuses to be a creep.

What's interesting is that Korra is basically what Aang WOULD have been, if he didn't have Monk Gyatso as his guardian. It's clear the other monks were only interested in teaching him airbending and keeping him absolutely focused on getting stronger due to the impending war with the Fire Nation. Which, ironically, probably would have made Aang a much worse airbender than he turned out as! It's just fun to see these parallels between the two shows :)

Here's why Korra has difficulty with Air
Each Avatar has had a bending style that was hard for them
    For Aang it was Earth
The opposite Element to their personality will be the hardest
Korra is strong willed rebellious even, Water is the most Mulible Element
Water to Ice and back again simple
Earth having a literal tie to the Ground itself
Fire is life and Destruction in one if one can master it they control the Fire the fire doesn't control them.
Air is letting go of things letting your Spirit in the wind guide you rather than instinct
Korra relies on simply her INSTINCTS in Bending

I think the writers kinda retconned the meaning behind opposing Elements. In Aang's series, the Elements themselves opposed each other, as well as complement which is why Aang had so much trouble with Earthbending but picked up Waterbending easily. In Korra's series Tenzin claims a Bender's Personality opposes the Element. If Korra was playing by Aang's rules, she'd have no problem with Airbending. Since she's Water Tribe the element she should've had trouble with is Fire.

I'm pretty sure she was taught to be spiritual and the spiritual side of bending, but rather than listen she didn't care at all about it, so she went fk it blamed everything/everyone else and went with the mentality, if it won't help me in a fight I'm not gonna learn it. Then the one time she is able to use something from air bending/ a more passive fighting form in a real fight, suddenly she starts liking air bending and the spiritual side. I rather think that instead of others not teaching her, that she herself was extremely narrow minded, headstrong and spoiled, which led her to think nothing was ever wrong with herself.

Probending is bending as sport vs what we have seen is bending as war. They are 2 different styles with 2 different purposes. Korra was destroying her opponents but not following. In a no holds bar knuckle drag fight she could probably beat the other team on her own.
There are a lot of things probenders do that are great for teamwork and one on one bender on bender fights. But fighters fight on muscle memory and we are going through the next 2 seasons that what they are training themselves to face, isn't the type of opposition they are going to face. Which is where their growth as benders will come, from facing different kinds of adversity and each of them will have to learn and adapt to those scenarios.
LoK may not be AS good as ATL, but it certainly starts out stronger and is a little more consistent. My opinion being season 2 being its weakest season, but still not bad. I am ready for this journey.

@Marty Melcher in the context of a world that is more or less divided between the four nations... yes, I would agree. However, it's not simply a matter of leaving old tradition for something that is "new or better". The new style of bending, I.e. the more "brawly style", represents cultures coming together in and of itself to become a new distinct one. This more unified style that can be adapted into any nations bending is the style of republic city, a place that is not tied down by any nation other than itself. In that respect, nothing is truly lost. At the same time, a hybridized martial art can still represent the culture it was created in. Take jeet kune do, Krav Maga, and kudo for example. Though they've all taken from other cultures to add more realism and effectiveness to their fighting styles in their country to make these new hybrid martial arts. Despite these three drawing from similar inspirations and represent less traditional fighting, they are still representative of the country they come from. As such, a water bender using a more republic city style to bend, for example, is no less waterbending than the purest sense.
And to make this last point quick, in the last Airbender, we already got to see bending that was not purely one nation. Take for example lightning redirection. The synthesis of techniques from one culture to another was already there. This was inevitable, and lightning redirection is no less firebending than pure fire bending. So, adapting republic city style to firebending is no less firebending than traditional firebending.
