They(UNFIL) maintained a buffer on the border for 18 years. Functionally keeping peace since the IS kicked out for illegally occupying Lebanon.
With what aircraft? With what directive or arms? To do anything like what you’re suggesting would need the entire Security Council and I don’t know if you know this or not the Security Council is what is holding back the United Nations because nothing can get done with them blocking everything. Those men and women are doing the best they can with the limited support and resources that are getting from the UNSC.

One would think that if the UN "peacekeepers" in Lebanon had been actually doing their job, Hezbollah never would have had a chance to start daily rocket, drone, and missile attacks on northern Israeli communities on 7 October, those communities wouldn't have spent a year evacuated from their home, and Israel wouldn't have any reason to be fighting Hezbollah back to the Litani River that the UN resolution those "peacekeepers" were supposed to keep them north of. But it seems like all UN agencies do is support terrorists. Why else would the head of the UNRWA teacher's union in Lebanon also have been Hamas' liaison to Hezbollah in Lebanon?
@bitkower Do you know nothing, try reading a book or two (not Janet and John books). UNIFIL are a glorified police unit (not a force in anything other than name). Hezballah can fire rockets from northern Lebanon and easily reach Israel, so UNIFIL "forcing" Hezballah back changes nothing. And for your information UNIFIL is there to stop both sides entering the blue zone, not just Hezballah. As you can see Israel has totally broken the U.NS.C. Resolution, and now breaking all International laws to boot.

Yes, the second Israel decides it needs enforce resolution 1701 after Hezbollah fired over 10,000 missiles into Israel UNIFIL is stepping up to handle the situation. It’s not like it was UNIFIL’s job over the past two decades to disarm and push Hezbollah past the Litani River. It’s not like the UN has issued more country-specific condemning resolutions against Israel than every other country in the world combined. Oh wait, that’s exactly what is going on…..

But great to see footage of the Irish contingent. The Irish have done a brilliant job there and elsewhere on behalf of the UN, since its inception. Punched well above their weight. And yes, in the past they have done the peacemaking bit as well. Again, look it up. There are different types of UN mandate.

@karstenschuhmann8334 No that is NOT their job. Peace keepers are never in an active war zone. They were there to help the Lebanese army keep hezbollah out of south lebanon (google it.) Theyve clearly failed havent they. By the time war breaks out, the peace keepers are redundant. The UN normally moves them to safety at this point, as they have done in EVERY OTHER CONFLICT ZONE. Name me another single active war zone where peace keepers sit there in the middle of active gunfire like sitting targets. You won't find one because they always leave when hostilities actually break out because they are there to PREVENT war not to sit there with gunfire all around them. This is common knowledge.
And no. UN peacekeepers cannot call in air strikes on their behalf. The UN does not have an airforce or army. That is also completely incorrect. This is all common knowledge. I suggest doing a minimum of research before spouting cr6p.

The problem is they're not peacekeepers. They've failed to keep the peace over the past year and since 2006 failed to prevent Hezbollah millitarising south Lebanon.
The UN has rules and you're entitled to your opinion.
They have a mandate to be there, and the UN Security Council renews it every year in a vote. Israel has no right to shoot at UN soldiers.

The UN is refusing to leave. As someone who did 6 peace keeping tours in this region, I can only offer this. If peacekeepers are injured or killed it is entirely the UN’s fault. The UN's conduct in Lebanon is, to say the least, odd and counter to what they have done and are doing in regards to other peacekeeping missions. A peacekeeping mission is defined by the UN as when two or more sides of a conflict come to a formal agreement to end hostilities. The UN then monitors compliance of the terms of the agreement by all parties.
So when the agreement breaks down to the point that hostilities re-commence there is no longer an agreement to enforce so for their own safety they withdraw from the conflict area. In fact that is exactly what they are doing in Mali right now. Like Mali, the UNIFIL mission has been a complete failure because the UN refuses to enforce the terms of the agreement. For instance in Lebanon Hezbollah has ignored the no fire zones by moving weapons and fighters into them and fortifing the area. For years the UN, despite Israeli protests, has done nothing about it. The only logical reason for the UN refusal to leave is in order to help Iran & Hezbollah. There can be no other reason, proving once again that this organization has lost its way and is no longer credible.

That's not their remit. They are a buffer force to separate the forces, nothing else.
@holaclive They were there to keep Hezbollah north of the Litani river, away from the Israeli border. In other words, to enforce the defined buffer zone between Hezbollah and Israel. They completely failed to do that, Hezbollah have been all over that buffer zone for the past year, firing missiles into Israel every day beginning 8 October 2023.
UNIFIL has been a waste of space throughout that time, not even trying to enforce the agreed buffer zone. And reportedly even needing Hezbollah's permission on when & where UNIFIL could patrol. Humiliation for all concerned.
Then why has Hezbollah been throwing rockets into Israel for a year? Surely a buffer force is supposed to yknow buffer.

I know the times haven't generaly been supportive of israel but peace keepers went there 20 years ago to disarm hezbollah and they obviously have not done a thing and now hezbollah are firing rockets just hundreds of yards from the un bases . Sitting around playing backgammon, taking notes and whiling away the time is not what they were there for. The sponsoring countries were paid off well for these deployments so they didn't care, especially countries hostile to Israel and turning a blind eye to Hezbollah. The mechanisms for any relevance was never there--Iran was allowed to co-opt Lebanon's political system, nullifying the entire mission.

The majority of people simply don't understand and need guidance regarding subjects such as this, I honestly believe that Israel should completely surrender now as they are obviously fighting a war which they can not win. I have a Master's Degree in Political Science from the University of Canterbury and I have also worked in conjunction with the U.N so I speak with experience and knowledge regarding this subject. I would therefore fully endorse Iran using their Nuclear capabilities against any aggressor within the region.
