The Irish troops watching Israel's hidden war - BBC News

- Along Israel's northern border with Lebanon, since 7 October the Israel Defence Forces have also been engaged in continuous fighting against the Lebanon-based Islamist armed group and political party Hezbollah.
The group are seen as terrorists by governments including the UK, and have long been opposed to Israel’s presence in disputed lands in the south of the country - resulting not in a border, but a so-called ‘blue line’ drawn by the UN, dividing the two nations.
From the Lebanese front line, embedded with Irish UN peacekeeping troops, Nafiseh Kohnavard reports.

I thought the same thing, the lady commentator, has another first language, mixed in when she learned English with an Irish accent. its kinda cool what humans can do.

But nice fail anyway.

Nothing, just look at Rwanda for the UN's peace keeping record. Plus they wouldn't have Israeli incoming, if there wasn't Hezbollah outgoing.

They take sides, and help hizzballa
The Irish support Palestinians murdering Israeli children so do nothing
They're there to document if war crimes happen. Ever wonder why Israel is keeping them out of the West Bank and Gaza?
Great guys and well done to them, but UNIFIL is a joke. UNSC Resolution 1701 said that Hezbollah must keep to the north of the Litani river, but in fact it is at the border, so their first and foremost mission is null. Besides, they follow Hezbollah orders, and when Hezbollah tells them to clear off, they follow instructions, and have done nothing so far to stop Hezbollah. Same is true with Lebanese Military but that's another thing. This story fails to show that Hezbollah has been attacking and firing daily into Israel, and it only mentions Israeli retaliations but that's to be expected from the BBC.
Preventing a war starting in the northern border is crucial for both Lebanese and Israelis. UNIFIL is doing a very poor job at ensuring peace on our borders, again with all due respect to the brave soldiers there who surely are doing their best personally. The problem is organizational, not the individual soldier's fault. Let's hope the border remains relatively stable and Hezbollah don't try to pull any major attack off in service of their Iranian masters and at the cost of Israeli and Lebanese lives.
And the same goes for Israel.... did you just forget to add them to your list? I'm thinking that the Israelis are the biggest threat to humanity at this stage.
@@shortfattoad7317Regardless of what you think about the occurrences in Gaza, in Lebanon Israel has been retaliating against continuous Hezbollah attacks. All violations of the ceasefire there are started by Hezbollah (I believe the same is true with regard to Hamas's violation of the ceasefire on Oct 7 attack with its jihadist attack, but that's another matter).
If you think there are Israeli violations on the Lebanese borders in recent years like i stated in my comment - you are free to state them.
You are "thinking that the Israelis are the biggest threat to humanity..." - OK so you think that. Everybody has his own thoughts to enjoy. It's always good to challenge them, check the reality and history, try to see why you believe so, but it's fine that you should think so. I studied the history and reached different conclusions.
All the best, have a great day.
Your last sentence revealed your bias particularly the ‘Iranian masters’ comments. UNFIL is doing the best job it can with very tight parameters. If peace does not last in Northern Lebanon then it is Israel alone who shoulders the blame.
@@maxpowerii7368 Hi Max. I'm obviously biased as I'm Israel and have been under attack by Hezbollah, and have witnessed the destruction that followed their 2006 attack on Israel, so I have no problem with my 'bias' being 'revealed'. However:
1. Yes I said 'Iranian masters' - How is that biased? Everybody knows and it's an established and obvious fact that Hezbollah is a proxy of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Is there any serious claim that it is not that?
2. You say that if peace does not last, it's Israel's fault - Hezbollah has attacked Israel countless times in last two months, it's ALWAYS started by Hezbollah and followed by Israeli retaliation. So already I don't understand what 'peace' is to last. Does peace mean only Hezbollah attacks Israel without retaliation? ALSO - Why is it Israel's fault alone? In 2006 they crossed the border to take hostages, while firing crazy number of rockets (Hezbollah has more rockets than almost any standard army in the world) - is this also automatically Israel's fault as you say? How is it that Israel's neighbors can attack Israel and still somehow it is automatically Israel's fault alone as you claim?
As for the claim that "UNFIL is doing the best job it can with very tight parameters" - I don't necessarily disagree. As I said I have a lot of respect for the soldiers on the ground, what I have a problem with is those 'parameters' that include UNIFIL taking orders from an Iranian proxy. This is document and a fact, and if you don't believe Hezbollah is an Iranian proxy or that it commands UNIFIL around you can easily research and see that is the fact. I am not blaming those Irish soldiers and I appreciate their efforts, but the reality is that as a peacekeeping organization it performs very poorly as there are daily attacks into Israel by Hezbollah that is not even supposed to be there according to international agreements, but only north of Litani river.
@@maxpowerii7368 What? How? So if Hezbollah attacks Israel then Israel is to blame?

What an ironic statement. I don't get it probably because I'm not part of Ireland or England.
Just looking from the outside through your window..

Don't know that "pride" is an appropriate term for it, but as British myself, I certainly extend my thanks and respect to the Irish for their compassion and humanitarian stance with regard to Palestine. In contrast I feel nothing but shame and disgust for the actions of the British political class, both government and opposition for their appalling and history-defying support of the Israeli terrorist state and its decades-long project of genocide, which has intensified dramatically over the past two months.
As an Irishman, I, like every Irish person I know, love and respect our British cousins. It is very unfortunate that Britain has global interests, which see it so appalingly wrong on this. However, ordinary British people are not at one with their government on this.

I would conclude that the UN are doing a very bad job in that region. Unless their only job is to "see".
The same in Serbia, Cyprus ....
The UN historically does not really want to get involved as a result of Israeli lobbying. Hence why UN troops are ordered to monitor and report events back to UN commanders.
If they weren't there, we'd all be believing Israel's propaganda.
Doing a very bad job?.. Until Oct 7th for the first time in many generations there was a generation of young Lebanon children and adults who’d never experienced a war, who’d never run for their lives from shelling or watch their family and friends die, and that was solely as a result of many years of very good soldiering in Lebanon.. I wish them well. But they've completely failed in their mission to uphold UNSC Resolution 1701. They've done little to help the Lebanese army secure the area, and haven't even tried to demilitarize Hezbollah let alone prevent new weapons from entering southern Lebanon. The renewed conflict is the direct consequence of this (and so many other) UN failures.
That is the problem with UNICEF , these soldiers will not risk their lives to stop Hezbollah. Why would they? it's only up to Israel. or if ever the world will have enough with Iran brutality
why would they demilitarize hezbollah? israel is the problem.
In contrast to Israel, the UN peacekeepers do not have access to artillery or air power (or do not have the license to use them on anything other than rocks). If the UN copied Israels behaviour in Gaza, they would have a shot at taking on the Iranian militias. Fat chance getting Guterres to sign off on that though…
@@fredrikhelland8194 We can't expect peacekeepers to be peacemakers. But they should be challenging Hezbollah and reporting back to the UNSC. These are violations of the agreement. But that doesn't happen. States are criticized for not complying with int'l law while terror groups get off scot free because they won't comply anyway. The entire system is flawed.
H e z b ol lah is the actual one ensuring security of Lebanon. You can go ask these peace keeping forces about who is the one that is actually keeping Lebanon safe. If they are being honest, they will say H e zb o ll ah. All of lebanon including the christians and muslims are grateful for the presence of H e zb o llah. In the past IDF would try to release p oi so n bo m bs in the form of b al oons or do ll s in the borders. Children would always be the vi c tim . That is why you don't see fights between he zb olla h and peace keeping forces. They are working with each other. That's the mystery I hope I was able to clear.
It's very nice that their operation "expanded" to recovering the dead and helping locals, what did they expend their mission from? Weren't they there to enforce decision 1701 to disarm Hezbollah and keep it away from the border with Israel?

You haven't a clue ,
the work on the ground in south Lebanon among the civilian population carried out by UN soldiers is beyond quantification, particularly by the Irish , from the orphanage built in Tibnin , to the schools in villages , to the medical treatment provided , food ,safety transport and a general all round looking after the civilian population, no question of political affiliation, colour or creed ever questioned ,
The leabanise people are beautiful people and desire peace , the UN provides that sense when ever given the opportunity ,
I know this for a fact as I served there and proudly .
They asserted that both parties desire war, but in reality, it seems that only one party, Hezbollah, is inclined towards conflict. This perspective raises questions about the credibility of BBC's reporting.
No group of people loves or incline to war, that is simply a common propaganda to villianize a certain group

UNIFIL runs with their tail between their legs the moment there's trouble at the border. I don't blame them, I don't see why the Irish would wish to die for any side in this conflict. But the truth is, they aren't doing any peacekeeping. UN resolution 1701 states that Hezbollah should not be near the border with Israel - and guess what - no one is enforcing that, not the peacekeeping force, nor the Lebanese government.

@@margaretmcguire8952 If he is an Israeli Margaret he doesn't have a 'country' he just lives on the land stolen from Palestine.
Amazing these soldiers seem very professional and very Cordial ❤️ from California :)
Do you think only 'Murrikanz are 'professional?
Blessed be thy Irish man.
Talk about useless. They have not done squat to enforce UNSC Resolution 1701.
Love the irish ☘️❤️🇮🇪
Wow...i didn't even knew they were there. I don't know what they even doing there, because obviously the Hizblabla rockets still flying to Israel. Please stop wasting human life for no reason and send these guys home already.
Why don't you let the UN in to monitor your "special military operation" and show us what you are doing to minimise civilian casualties?
@@yermanoffthetelly Oh, so they're stationed there to spy on Israel! now everything make sense, what an unbiased and totally legitimate organization.
I didn't get what you trying to say here, are you implying that we should give a tour in a middle of a military operation for a force from a visibly hostile to Israel organization?
❤ and respect 2 the Irish Republic from Pakistan and muslim world
Pretty one sided reporting…

Go Irish! There's a reason Notre Dame has the motto "Fightin Irish". We are better your friend than your enemy. Pray for peace...you know the rest. Great to see this!

Ireland supports Palestine 🇵🇸
The amount of blame on the UN in the comments. The UN is its membership, you are all citizens of its member states, its the self interest of each member state that hampers the UN, particularly the permanent members of the security council. The peacekeepers are powerless by design. Their mandate set out rules of engagement etc. Furthermore, Israel, its de facto forces, Hezbollah etc etc don't abide by the resolution anyway - so what are the Irish and other contingents to do? Lobby your governments at home at get them to make the UN work - they are the UN.
