      got mine yesterday, still didnt shoot a lot of birds but..some. I had problems shooting flying kingfishers. Sitting birds are not a problem, but flying little birds are ...well.. dont think my Olympus E-P7 pics from flying kingfishers are worse.. umm.. was disappointed and hope to get better pictures.

    Good review of the new Bird Subject AI AF. I enjoyed your photos. I have been using it since it was released. I find it helpful in a lot of cases. I have it assigned to the position 2 on the Function Level, with position 1 being the regular C-AF. This was I can quickly change between the two AF methods.

      Thank you very much David. :) Yes that's a good idea with the function level, I did the same but I still hope that it can be assigned to a button in the future. The E-M1X would have enough places for that.

      @@andrebossphotography7967 Absolutely. Something like the Canon setup, which allows double af modes via custom buttons. Really hope it gets added. I'm using joystick press as home. between bird af and whatever af mode my c modes are setup with but the button function would be so much better.

    • @fsi2210

      Or even the E-M1 Mark iii eye af implementation would be even. it will auto find eye, but can be toggled off with a custom button and also can select via a custom button or tapping the screen.

      Well I can agree on that but we have to be avare that Olympus cameras are highly customabile, more then most other brands. I am shure that sooner or later we will have the option to add more function to the buttons.

      @@andrebossphotography7967 In case you (or others) still haven't, I use the centre press of the joystick for AF target home with C-AF+TR. One button press to turn it on/off. Just choose whichever button you prefer.

    The bird detection is always using the hole area and AF points. Number of chosen AF points has no influence on it. In case the software detects more then one bird the camera does select the closest to the chosen AF point. In case you have chosen all AF points than it select the one closest to the center. This how you can influence the behavior of bird detection.

    • @andrebossphotography7967
      @andrebossphotography7967  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Michael thanks for your comment. So what you are describing is what the software does and I experience the same when it is about the first step, the recognition. First it detects the bird with the white box and for that you maybe not experience such a differents. In my last months of working with this software I feel a difference when the box starts to get green and targeting the head or eye. When I use for example only one AF-Point and I move my camea around the bird I get more red boxes which is not a good sign. So there is a change in the behavior, thats why I am saying use all the AF-Points or not lower than 25-AF-Points.

    • @michaelguthmann
      @michaelguthmann 4 роки тому

      @@andrebossphotography7967 Understand, I just would like to point out that the camera looks on the hole image area for birds independed of how many focus points you have chosen. When you experience is that you should have at least 25 AF points that is fine. In case you have more then one bird detected than the camera selects the one which is closest to your AF point selection.

      @@michaelguthmann Yes, that's true. I had so many different situations and because I love backlight I was more safe without all the fields...I understand that it always will use all...but for the second step, to keep it at the target I had a better hit rate with less fields.

    Thank you for the usefull impressions, Andre !
    Did you tried to use AF Limiter inside the camera ? Using a specific range (4m...100m) might increase the speed of detection and/or autofocus.
    I did not tested this, it's just a guess. In my camera (E-M1 Mark II) AF Limiter is usefull in some situations (birds in flight and something in background) and it will speed up the AF system.

    • @andrebossphotography7967
      @andrebossphotography7967  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Toni, thanks for your comment. To be honest I don’t use the AF-Limiter very often, only then when I am in a hide and I know my range will more or less be the same. In generall it can be usefull, like you explained. I am not shure if the improvement would be noticeable together with the bird tracking, because the system can separate the bird from the background. If I am out next time I will test that and let you know 😉. Thanks again.

      @@andrebossphotography7967 Thanks that's good to know. I am torn between getting the Panasonic G9 (now has animal detect AF) or the Olympus EM1 mk2 or mk3 (no bird detection AF of course on those) for wildlife filming on a tripod mostly. Any thoughts?

    • @andrebossphotography7967
      @andrebossphotography7967  4 роки тому +1

      @@koolkutz7 I would prefer the E-M1 III over the E-M1 II because i feel a improvement in the C-AF and other features of course. The G9 offers a 4k with 50p or 60p and the E-M1 III is with 30p max in 4k. I used the G9 for testing (before the firmware) for some time but it could not convince me.

    • @koolkutz7
      @koolkutz7 4 роки тому +1

      @@andrebossphotography7967 Thanks. This is my dilemma! On the one hand the G9 now has 4K 60p & 10 bit 4:2:2 plus animal AF but the Olympus has PDAF system which could be better? I also really like the Panasonic Menus as I've had their cameras before so Oly menus seem a bit daunting!

    • @andrebossphotography7967
      @andrebossphotography7967  4 роки тому +1

      @@koolkutz7 On the other hand you have in the Olympus cameras so many nice features. Live ND Filter, High-Res Mode, Live Composite, Stary Sky AF. I personaly like the focus system cameras more then the lumix. In the new E-M1 III there is a option called "My Menu" the star sign at the end of the camera menu, so you can favorite those menu points you need reguarly in one place.
