If you're thinking about passing this video because of audio quality, don't! Well worth the "canned" sound and CC works great! Thanks LRB and Bentley!

Sorry, but my 70 years old ears are not working so well with this audio😢

I like the idea of thinking about our aquariums in terms of Lakes and rivers, this can help us decide how we approach the equipment we use and how we stock the tank and the methods we use for maintenance.

    Yeeeeeees
    Instant rewatch for me
After watching the first iteration i decided to try turning down the flow of my canister filter for my tetra tank and while i wont be able to fully turn it off, because the tank is very much on the high side of stocking density, but ive since observed the changes in fish behaviour lucas was talking about and i quite enjoy it

28:10 even if you do no water changes you can still effectively do the same thing for cories and stuff by letting the water evap pretty low and fill it up with new water. You aren't changing any out but by volume you are adding much more water.

It's weird how some people say if you have algae it means there's an imbalance in your tank, meanwhile LRB is purposely growing algae to stabilize his tanks.

It's a perspective! I love being open minded to how others do things because I feel there is always a lesson to learn that will help me be better.

@@BentleyPascoe Lucas's theory or Idea about the daphnia population jumping up in spring and that triggering fish to breed in his style of filter-less tanks is interesting too. I'm just getting to that part of your interview and thinking to myself why rewatching is worth it. I didn't remember him talking about that! And I'm just at the point of wondering what will trigger my CPD colony to start breeding again. Since I'm in southern CA I don't run heaters except for winter and it's just into the low 70's in the tank so I'm wondering if I wait, or try to intervene with extra food or water changes.🤔

Totally off topic, besides relating to LRB, but that's a good picture in the thumbnail...except for Lucas has one of those classic cow poke faces??? I can't look at him without thinking he needs one of those black, flat brim stetson hats, a pair of six shooters and to be up on a horse next to Billy the Kid or something. Not in a bad way, he just has those old sepia tone wild west vibes. 😅✌️

I love algae. It houses life and the fish eat it. Once the micro life is going I can lightly scrape the algae off the glass and it’s a meal. I don’t have to add in extra food all the time. Water parameters stay good. The life cycle continues.

So, no, heavy stocking doesn't work with filterless tanks (parsing what I just heard).

He really should have someone write a summary of his thoughts and views. I think it would help a lot to have the info in one place like that

Im slowly getting used to not put a commercial filter in my tanks mostly I use air now but it is possible to have no filter tanks and even have “pretty tank” without filters

I really believe whatever lrb is doing but his "way" has low reproducibility if you can't find water like that. Also in smaller scale like if you have a single 10 gallon, some variables become more prominent.
Going filterless is absolutely easy but going no surface agitation, going no water circulation, these are not as easy. Filter is just surface area if you don't count the mechanical filtration it does.
Going no water change is often bunched up with going filterless and that is an issue because these are entirely different things.
I for example am going for a filtered no water change aquarium right now. I just want the filter floss working on that water clarity because I have so much mulm. I want it to look nice
Going no water change is harder than going no filter in my opinion

    • @LRBaquatics

Definitely has high reproducibility. Why else would I have so many aquariums? Many smaller than 10 gallons.

Would no filter be a bit of a misnomer? Being that isn't he effectively using the soil as a filter? At least that's how I describe how I filter the water. I just use something to push the water around if I have fish that want it or I want to introduce it for some reason like with cories.
Like a true no filter would also be without substrate and lava rock or whatever else right? So just no powered filtration then? Lol

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  3 місяці тому +1

I can understand where you'd say it's a misnomer. I think it's more the thought that most people use a piece of equipment as their filter and don't necessarily think about plants, Algae, substrate etc. Being the filter
