      My ferrets usually play very roughly, they’ll toss each other around and jump on top of one another. They let the other know when they’ve had enough and I’ve only seen mine hiss at the other ferret one time. I think as long and the ferrets aren’t running away they are fine.

    Ferrets and cats have a very thick skin. The cat will not hurt the ferret and Elsa was actually playing with the cat. That's how all of my ferrets have played with all of my animals. I have had lots of ferrets over the years and have taken in many rescues. Elsa is actually initiating play. Ask another professional if you are still worried but it's sad to think that Elsa and Nyla are missing out on a beautiful friendship. Ferrets are close relatives to cats and will not hurt each other. Both normally play more rough that other small pets ..at least rough in our eyes. It's not rough to them. It's fun to "play attack". That's how they play.

    • @Pete--
      @Pete-- 6 років тому +99

      I mean, their skin isn't so much thick as it is stretchy. There's a lot of scruff, so claws and teeth don't really pierce anything. Dogs do the same thing.

      "Ferrets are close relatives to cats"
      As much as they look similar and even do some things in similar way, ferrets, according to scientists in the field, are actually mustelids which are part of the caniforms, not the feliforms. Caniformia and feliformia diverged 42 million years ago. Similar animal that are feliforms are the mongooses.

      @@xxdeletedfortniteaccountxx3543 Apparently both ways are right. They have their family tree identity confused, sometimes I see them and think that way too. Keep in mind, they are not either cats or dogs, but more closely related to one of them. When the carnivora order appeared around 42 MYA rom the miacids, it splitted into these two groups and each kept splitting. So mongooses and hyenas being feliforms and closer to cats, doesn't mean they are cats just as bears and ferrets aren't dogs but are closer to them, and share certain characteristics, that are from the splitting. There are some animals very close to canids and some very close to felidae.
      Also if you see mustelid skulls some of them really look like felid skulls, some doesn't.

    Back in middle school we had a cat who LOVED the two ferrets we had and the ferrets loved them back. So much when the cat was trying to give birth, the spot she really wanted to be in was the ferrets cage where the cage was open top. So she could cuddle with the ferrets while giving birth. We obviously didn’t allow it, but man, she was persistent in wanting to be with them.

  • @MoonClawx
    @MoonClawx 6 років тому +65

    I wouldn't worry too much about the cat and ferrets playing roughly. Ferrets playing roughly, and cats are perfect for that. Best way to tell if a ferret is fighting or playing is the hair. Just like a cat, if the hair on their back is standing up, they are being aggressive and fighting. I wouldn't defend yourself so much, you are doing great in raising them all. Just let them have fun and if one cries from pain, then break it up. Sounds heartless, but in all honesty neither can hurt the other quickly and the more they play the more they learn proper play. Ferrets for example can break bones with their bites, but thay are intelligent and through play they learn what is the right level of bite. You are doing great.

    • @littleloulou1
      @littleloulou1 4 роки тому

      I applaud you. :) My ferrets have always been like MEH and have never raised a hair but like you said, they were given the proper chance to meet and greet correctly without anyone jumping in to confuse things. It's like butting-in when at their best opportunity to communicate. My boys had a friend over and his little chihuahua thought it was a good idea to attack our little (not so little...larger than the dog) Radar just to find himself cowering in the corner. They made friends in less than 2 minutes. He knew that a fight was not what he wanted after that day and they got along just fine. Animals speak animal...and we don't. All we can do is watch their movements and even then; we see something new often enough to just trust and be nearby to scoop them up in a split second.

    • @littleloulou1
      @littleloulou1 4 роки тому +1

      The cat is walking around to claim the area and the ferret approached the cat at the end to acknowledge that he knew the cat but the cat was fickle. He may not have understood that. Ferret behavior is so different from what most pet owners think. The ferret may also push the cat back while sizing him up...but she said on the video that they already knew the cat so the ferret (who knows no "uncomfortable distance" may have caused the cat to at some point; get all serious but injuring the ferret is a whole other thing. They are strong skinned and thick skinned to anger. The only thing domesticated ferrets are know for is being oblivious ...not war. Just like any animal, one can stray from (mental illness) their docile yet engaged attention but very rare. Ferrets as kittens can be a bit rough...just like Feline kittens but both grow out of it and this ferret is not a kitten.

      My grandpa had a cat who missed half of right ear, and scratched nose which never fully healed ! To picture of that cat look more scarier, imagine that he is full black ! Because he was full black ! With about 7Kg of weight, and half meter of lenght ! Cant remind wha twas name of that cat given by my grandpa, but i give him a name - Frki :)
      When i first time ask grandpa whats happen with the Frki (then he was not in all of already mentioned measures), he say that cat had a clash with the fox ! I don't believed him ! Cat/Frki will not survive fight with the FOX ! But latter same day grandpa's neighbour mention when he saw Frki, that cat (frki) manage to protect his chickens when fox comes from them :) They trully clashed. And he lose part of ear in that battle ! Grandpa was think that Frki also get that scar on nose from that battle. But it was not the case !
      Frki always love to get lost, and get back to home after month or two ! Where he went to ? To the forest ! Who know what he fight in the forest, when he get back with that "open" nose !
      The cat of that neighbour latter at some point success somehow to find a Marten or some other musteline, whatever was that ! But way bigger than this ferrets on video ! Neighbour cat almost get fight - read life - when that musteline bite that cat for a neck - read throat !
      Frki at once appear from nowhere and grab a musteline ! Neighbour cat escape and now those two start to fight :P
      Battle ends with the musteline opened neck - read throat ! Frki not have injuries at all ! He was at his full mentioned size :) Just some scratches on the head, which heal just in a few days ! True i not watched that fight, but my dad left a musteline hanged to me and brother saw it bcs he knows we will not believe :)
      There was a lot of lethal adventures with the Frki. And what really happen with him, no one really knows !
      Once he goes on his adventure into the woods and never back :( Some people seen him in another village, behind another hill - cat without ear and open nose, some people who knows my grandpa and be at his house - know the Frki - they recognize him in the suburb :P
      Never discover whats happen with him :(

      Ferrets ARE misunderstood by people. They are very intelligent territorial predators, and if you bring home a kitten one day and they decide they don't like how much attention you are giving the new baby in the house, they absolutely are capable of murdering that kitten. This exactly happened to my best friend. I'm not saying they can't exist in cohabitation as you can clearly see is possible, but I think people need to stop making generalizations that aren't true based on their own anecdotal experiences with these animals. Of course there are more cute videos of cats and ferrets playing together found on UA-cam than there are videos of them murdering each other, but don't think that just because yours get along that all of them do.

I'm not a ferret expert, but I feel like if the ferret was actually hurting or threatening the cat in any way, the cat would do something about it, which she never really did. all I saw was play behavior. Eventually Mr. Ferret passed of old age (he was 5 or 6 when we adopted the kitten and passed at 8 yrs old) and Miss kitty was SO SAD, so then we adopted a kitten, who is now her "annoying little brother" ..but she has also enjoyed your video.
    More suprevised playtime with "Hey guys chill.... " and separating them when one or the other gets too wild for the other, and they'll eventually learn the limits.

    Had 5 ferrets & a female cat. The 4 boys would play great with her & she loved them. My tiny female ferret, though, would go bottle brush tail, start honking aggressive and try to clamp on to my cat's belly. Cat would play rough with the big boys, but if she saw that bully ferret girl coming, she high-tailed it to the tallest piece of furniture in the room. Had a male cat & the girl ferret left him alone. I'm pretty sure they can smell sex difference across species. Female ferrets are so much more territorial with each other, same with female cats. So, yeah, alpha/aggressive females aren't going to care if it's another ferret or a cat. If it's another female, they're going to fight.

    I know this is a late comment, but I used to have grand-ferrets (my daughter's pets; like grand-children.) She had, before acquiring her ferrets, a very unsociable cat- Othello. He would actively stalk guests/strangers/ anyone who came into the house other than the 2 people who lived there. I remember placing furniture between my ankles and Othello, because he would attack. Then came the ferrets, and Othello was intrigued! He learned to enjoy interacting with them, then, for some reason, started socializing with the rest of us (humans.) Unfortunately, at a ripe old age, Othello passed away this summer, but I credit his interaction with ferrets with his acceptance of people.

    There's plenty of cases where you have rescued animals where they're raised together from babies to adult and they get along great in captivity where they're natural enemies in the wild. There's just somethings in the wild that adults have to teach the youngsters. Maybe youngster animals don't care what the other guy looks like if they're playing and are happy together . Bonds that can last a lifetime. That what it looks like to me anyway.

      This so much. People are so quick to judge and complain these days. No one did anything wrong in the first video... ferret, cat or human. While follow up explanations were useful and overall a good thing, they should NOT have been necessary! I didn't get the impression that the kitten was eating the plastic material in the first video, or that she or the ferrets were hostile toward one another as opposed to just tentatively feeling each other out as new presences within their shared environment... but I do understand those concerns. Still, nothing about that first video suggested any ignorance, negligence or mistreatment on the part of the animals' guardian(s), so maybe conclusions should be arrived at prudently and fairly instead of instantaneously and knee-jerkingly?

      Machetes AreFun so true. Haters gonna hate...especially ignorant people and needless to explain ..ignorant means not knowing: not stupid. But stupid comes when people post their ignorance rudely on videos to hurt others feelings as if in a threatening manner. Well said btw. If anything, cats and ferrets prove to us that people are much worse at getting along with one another.

It seems like cats get a bit freaked when one of these go after them. Ferrets and their kin are fast and agile.

    A ferret doesn't need to be trained to kill. Ferrets are predators. And they prey on small animals. So small animals can trigger their predator instinct.

    Can't vouch for the ferrets but the cat was definitely trying to play. Seen cats play exactly that way all the time.
    Then again, adult cats that do not get along may very well try to kill each other, and neither of these species are fully domesticated (just don't tell the cat I look after who has a serious crush on her brush).
    When, not if, things get out of hand they can go bad very quickly, so I am glad that you are aborting the play long before that.

    • @Cocoonen

      Cats may get along better with other animals than their own species - if we speak about animal they don't know yet. Kitten learns to think animals she meets during her first couple of months are "part of the flock", part of "us", like almost cats. Some say cat thinks human is some kind of no-good cat.
      On the other hand, many animals understand that another animal is not adult. Adult animals stand puppies, kittens and so on much better than they would stand older animal doing same thing.

One day, the one ferret was bothering the cat when he wanted to be left alone. The cat actually put the ferret in its mouth and lifted it off the ground. It scared me, and I never let it happen again. After I got them separated though, the ferret actually looked amused and playfully pounced on the cat again. I separated them at this point, but it showed me just how resilient ferrets can be.

    Something you need to correct, is that ferrets dont need to be trained to hunt. It is very much an instinct and they can and absolutely will hunt to kill.
    Sure, if they never get the chance to work, then sure, they make absolutely amazing and sweet pets, but do not make the mistake of thinking that they need to be trained to kill, because they absolutely do not.
    They are incredibly curious, and intelligent and will make great pets that also work and play with other animals like cats and dogs, but surprisingly enough, they can also interract quite well with almost any other pet, including rats... I would not trust them with smaller animals though...
    Other than that, its a great video, and the cat looks like our Misty ( RIP ) and she got on great with all of our ferrets just fine, as did Luna, but Fizz tolerates them until they get too close to her when she is eating.... Then she smacks them on the head.

      I always introduced the other pets to all of my many ferrets very cautiously but once they meet, it's a done deal. I've had many small pets around my ferrets and nothing. They pack like dogs and almost instant family. No injuries and they are careful with the little ones. When my hamsters got loose; I let my ferrets find them. They would scruff the neck like a mama cat and bring them back to me unharmed and unfazed. My rats always loved them but only for naps since they don't play the same way. At night, they went to their respective cages and would sometimes chatter to each other until I let them out to play....well visit; then nap and nap and nap.

    Ik I’m very late- however I will say that they are definitely trying to initiate play with each other, there’s a saying between the ferret community, “no poop, no blood, no problem” and it very much stands with the cat and ferret. They won’t kill each other as long as you keep maintaining them however you’re taking more of a risk with a dog. Cats almost always get along %100 with ferrets and will even cuddle. Dogs however have a pray drive with ferrets on that prey list. As soon as they get the opportunity they will feast - depending on the breed of course

    I got 3 Ferrets. And 3 cats. Note I live in the country out in TN. So I have plenty of land to take my ferrets on walks. Yes walks lol. My ferrets have never once bitten me. They teeth me which is just playing for them. My boy cat that I am really close to does this as well. He will put his teeth on me. But that's as far as it goes. He knows exactly when to stop from biting me. Now my ferrets are primarily kept outside on the front porch. I took a chicken coop and converted it into a 2 story ferret cage with a tube connecting top and bottom. The roost box is where the ferrets sleep and during this winter they did really good out there. As its protected from wind and raid on the porch and the ferrets burrowed into their pet bed I bought them turning it into a burrow lol. Hell they were warmer than I was in my own home. I also use cedar chips for their litter. Its really good at neutralizing the smell of their pee and poop. And it lasts far longer than any other pet store litter. I plan on doing some addon work to their cage this summer to give them allot more room to run and play. They do really well outside and I often see them lounging around in their hammocks and such during the day. And zipping around in the evening. They are very affectionate pets and very curious pets. So you have to think baby proofing and then take that to a whole new level if you decide to get them as pets. Because they WILL find crazy places to sneak into if you aren't careful. But they are a lot of fun and return a lot of love. They get along with my cats and I have never seen them fight. My cats are pretty laid back though.

    Looks like the kitten is testing her dominance over the ferrets, and she's not fully grown yet! She was mostly pushing the issue, until the end, where one ferret finally had enough. As the kitten grows and gains confidence (and weight), you will probably see things escalate a bit. Cats do not need to be trained to hunt or kill, they learn by playing, and it's instinct that they rely on as adults.
