This has been on my list for awhile. Unfortunately I had to toss out almost a full night of images do to high clouds. That said I was amazed at how much surrounding structure in Ha there was for this target! Most of the images I saw prior to shooting this seemed to show NGC2175 pretty isolated in the surrounding blackness. That just isn't the case at all! For the palette, after seeing the initial SHO image, with Ha completely dominating the entire scene I had to pivot what I wanted. Ended up running the great ForaxxPaletteUtility script by PaulymanAstro as well as an HOO+SII blend I did myself. Seeing both had their strengths and weakness I averaged them together to get my final palette (Foraxx had the nice bright blue center and HOO+SII had the great reds around the main bubble of nebula).
There are some really great little things peaking through. SH2-252E is really cool. It looks like it is being ionized by UCAC4 553-022951 -- Eclipsing Binary but there are infact a lot of young stellar objects within there. It is a true star forming region unto itself!
Another really weird structure is just listed as WISEA J060825.57+210456.8 Infrared Source, but it does not look like anything i've seen and it is very faint on the IRSA finder charts as well. It is really small, just 12"x7" at its biggest. So if anyone has a big scope on a mountain they want to take an image of I'd be excited to see it 06h08m25.5706s, +21d04m56.889s
One other intriguing area are the giant loops of Ha getting blown to the right in the image (north) of the entire structure which seem not commonly seen in images of this particular target along with a shock front above (east) the main structure.
    Comments always welcome!!

A striking work, Frank. You know what, your videos form a sort of addiction (at least, in me) as you generously share all the items that form it: the great (and continuosly improving) tools, the detailed yet easy methodology, the cool findings/results that even amateurs can dig out in the night sky and the aspiration that’s there in your words and intoning. Your enthusiasm if so transfusing, man. By large, you’re a beacon of light for many stargazers out there, no less. It does set the new boundaries and suggest that one has the means of looking wider and deeper into the Universe. That’s awesome. Keep that light shining, please.

If you flip the image 90 degrees clockwise you can make out the Monkey Head a bit more.

Yes, 90 degrees clockwise, then look at this. photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-JjD96hR/0/LwD5vnhSQcpqQmd8nbS2tQt9sQcbJKrvqv8cv27dn/X2/i-JjD96hR-X2.jpg

Looks like that 10" is getting some use. Looking forward to an update video on your thoughts on it now that you got some decent time under the stars with it.

I’ve also wondered why it’s called the Monkey Head-personally, I don’t see it. But nice image!

Hey Frank - gonna image this next week OSC narrowband..
I’m curious why you shot 15 min subs?
    Jeff

That is my default time for narrowband. You want to shoot long enough subs so that the histogram is off your noise floor. I think people are getting caught up in taking a ton of shorter exposures and that will never have the same quality as few longer subs, especially for narrowband. Broadband is a different story as the light coming in is so mich more intense. Usually around 20x for broadband. So if you shoot 1 min broadband dont be surprised it you can shoot 20min narrowband subs

15 minute exposures. What made you decide on the length? Is the NEQ-6 the predecessor to the EQ6R Pro? Have you done anything to the mount to improve the quiding? What is the typical guiding RMS for a session? How many nights did it take to get all the data. Did you know it was going to take 28 hours? Is your OTA weight at the limit of the mount? Your final image is beautiful. Thanks

That is a lot of questions lol. Length, even at 15min the histogram is still well on the left, could go longer but settled here. Neq6 is kinda of the predecessor, it is a but more heavy duty than the newer variants and was advertised for an imaging caoacity if 18kgs. Nothing modified, just tightened the worm gears to minimize backlash. My guiding is depenant on seeing but typically .65" for an average night. For length i like powers of 2 for number of exposures. So for narrownand i like to strive for 64x900" per filter, but will settle for 32 if i have to. You can get 32x900" in a night. So i plan on 1 to 2 nights per filter.

Thank you. I’m new to this hobby and I’ve haven’t seen this exposure length used. I’ve seen videos of lots of short exposures vs fewer long exposures and how much integration is needed but I still don’t have a good understanding. I’ve settled for 3 to 5 minute exposures. My mount is the AVX and the guiding is erratic. While I’ve tried to adjust backlash and can get a session under 1” average there are some wild spikes at times. I’m experimenting with integration times. I’m using a OSC camera, ASI071MC, OAG, C8 SCT at 1442mm. I only have a light pollution filter, Antlia Quad band. I manage to get almost 16 hours of integration of the Wizard Nebula, using 5 minute exposures, and when processing with Siril and Affinity Photos the final result doesn’t look any better then after processing 5 hours of integration. Maybe I need a duo band filter. Frustrating hobby but I like the challenge. Thank you.

@KJRitch i started with a c8 and the dslr pentaxk5 which has that exact same sensor chip! It is a great hobby full of challenges

@@setiv2 Other than the extra aperture size is your Newtonian a better design vs the SCT for DSO?

That is beautiful. Monkey? Not so much.
