@@PossiblyJamesAlexander I agree, but I still love the current stereo mix of Your Mother Should Know. The way the vocals change their panning and become fuller by the end gives the song a great sense of progression.
I too want a deluxe MMT package. But you can hear a surround version of Strawberry Fields on the Sgt Pepper deluxe box and, i think, the 1+ dvd from a few years back. And i think the MMT movie blu ray has the songs with a 5.1 option. And both songs are on the Love soundtrack dvd with a 5.1 option if you buy the cd/dvd package of that.
Actually what I really want to see is a true stereo remixing of the first four albums using the tech from the Revolver remix. A true stereo She Loves You!!!
It's been done by former engineers, now collectors. There's also a two-track mix matching the two-track stereo of the first few albums. Some have tried a synch-up of She Loves You, but they are easily identifiable and obviously, don't sound like the original. The two-track that I have is the real deal and sounds fantastic! I hope , as well, that at least the "Please, Please Me" and "With The Beatles" albums, are given the remixing treatment now available.
Didn't Paul basically record his bass live for their first few albums? DI wasn't around until the mid 60s. I'd love to hear those old bass tracks with the new mixing, it would probably be completely eye opening.
Good news for you, stereo She Loves You will be out later this month on the "Red Album" remix. I don't really think A Hard Day's Night and Beatles for Sale need stereo remixes that badly. No idea why they released them on mono for the first CDs in the 80s. The stereo versions sound great.
I love how they upload everything onto Spotify and other streaming services. I know it isn't the same as a physical copy but as a student I get really excited to hear the new mixes in very decent quality and all the extra outtakes and demos
I found mono Revolver on UA-cam Music and mono Sgt Pepper on UA-cam. I haven't seen mono White Album on a streaming service yet. The mono box set is pricey.
@@ts214121yeah apparently there is no mono White Album on stream services, like Spotify. It surely is a pity, 'cause I would love to hear it Hopefully someday they will release it there...? In any case, probably this year we will get mono Rubber Soul and hopefully mono Please Please Me, With The Beatles, etc. in the near future(also please, mono MMT and the mono mixes of YS)
Rubber Soul is one of my favourite Beatles albums. Not only that it should be remixed, but also add Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out as bonus tracks. Also it should contain the original unstretched photo as a bonus.
@ultramet agree, 100% and you may have already seen it on UA-cam, but they have a 20 minute overdub session for “Think for Yourself which is an absolute blast. If you’ve not seen it yet I highly recommend it, it’s a lot of fun and their back-and-forth is hysterical!
I think a 'Psychedelic Beatles' box including MMT/Yellow Sub is a great idea with plenty of scope for demos, early mixes, outtakes, etc. Years ago, I burned a single disc cd-r of such a compilation, including 'Christmas Time'.
@@gregcross5579 Same here, I'll also pass without it. I hate that Giles even said it was a mistake, but they never released it stand-alone or anything.
I appreciate for life to hear that studio chatter from "Think for Yourself" I swear Paul sings two songs that make me feel crazy hearing. Paul hums "doo doo, doo, doo-doo!" two times; George picks it up and sings: "It's the Woody Woodpecker Show!" Later Paul sings the credits for the TV show Stingray: Aqua Marina. "Marinaaaa... Aqua Marinaaa"
I think what would be nice to see in the Rubber Soul Box Set, would be a true stereo mix of the Capital Rubber Soul record, as a bonus. That would please the American people who grew up listening to it.
I would LOVE a UK and US remix/remaster of Rubber Soul. And make it a Box Set worthy of the Pepper Box Set. Also! A Blu Ray version and NOT a CD of just “Day Tripper & We Can Work It Out” remixes!
I have the magic solution to your question... ...Get Peter Cobbin !!! I made a playlist of the new Revolver remix and added Think For yourself and Nowhere Man from Yellow Sub - and they felt just as warm and vibrant. In fact for me they justified George Harrison's assertion of the two albums being like"Part One and Part Two" At the very least I hope they follow Peter Cobbin's formula for bringing out the richness of the sound cascading out from the centre. Can't wait.
As an American who first bought the Beatles' American configuration LPs in the late '70s, recorded them to cassette and listened to them a lot in the early '80s during college, and then bought the British configuration CDs in the late '80s, I was worried I might have imprinted too hard on the American versions, but found myself adapting easily to the Brit ones. I think it would probably be harder for someone to wean themselves off the US versions if they had been part of the original Beatles' American fandom in the '60s.
I was in the same boat, US preessings first, then the British, then the confusion of running order on which LP. After I'd mastered the listings on Parlophone, I started to forget what the Capitol sequences were after a while - you go back and forth.
So true! Weening is a hard thing to do!! If I want to feel 16 again and smell the old days memories, I go back to the U.S. version. Just gotta hear that false start again!😁🎶👍💚
I was a US Beatle fan since 64 and had no problem putting the crappy Capitol butcher jobs on the shelf, when I was lucky enough to find the real (UK ) Beatle albums in 1970 in a Boston record shop. Fortunately, they had both the mono and stereo pressings, so over time I was able to get both of all issued in both formats.
I decided to get all the British versions of the albums when I collected The Beatles on CD. Took a little while to get used to them after having been brought up on the Capitol albums. But now I prefer the British versions. Except for "Beatles VI", which was the first album I ever bought. Also "Yesterday...And Today" which is close to being a Greatest Hits collection.
They already have remixes for the Yellow Submarine and Magical Mystery Tour songs, so I'm hoping that one day they'll make them available outside the dvds/blu-rays of the movies. I'd also love the earlier takes of I Am The Walrus, followed by the later takes. A "full" version of You Know My Name is something I'm surprised hasn't really happened yet. And hearing the raw studio takes of It's All Too Much would be a blast. Would rather see Rubber Soul done first, and I hope that as they get closer to the beginning, they include live performances of some of the songs (the Beatles did consider themselves a live band after all). There are other performances on tape, and with the de-mix technology we could finally hear the Beatles when they were most energetic.
The idea behind the mix was associated with the fact that modern (1965) mono turntables could be used to play stereo LPs. If one plays a stereo LP that has a centered stereo mix on a mono player, it folds down to mono, but the fold-down effect keeps the material that is at the center at a different volume than it would be if one combined two discrete channels. The mix was designed to have the same sound whether it was played on a stereo player or on a mono player with a lightweight tone arm.
I must have the Lennon demo of What Goes On. That's incredible that you're the owner. I'd bet the original tape is long gone. You almost certainly have the only copy.
I just hope that with Rubber Soul they use the Revolver Box Set as a benchmark here, as for me that has been the best deluxe Box Set so far. A Hard Day's Night would be a natural candidate for the next Box Set for me..
The early version of "I'm Looking Through You" (with the opening handclaps) fades early on the Anthology set. I have the longer version on the bootleg CD "Back-Track"
It's a real balancing act especially with dynamic range plus Andrew's knowledge of The Beatles is fantastic and he should be employed as a technical consultant or specialist
Regarding the question of why they went for hard channel separation on the original stereo mix: I don't know about EMI UK, but I understand that Columbia Records in the US was at one point encouraging its engineers to do this kind of hard panning. The reason was that record buyers who didn't yet own stereo phonographs were nonetheless starting to buy stereo LPs (stockpiling for the future?), and when you play a stereo record on mono equipment, anything that is at or near the center of the stereo spectrum comes out a lot louder in relation to instruments or voices that are hard left/right; keeping EVERYTHING hard left/right was a way of ensuring that the stereo "fold in" would have more or less the same specs as the mono mix. So maybe there was a similar edict from the higher-ups at EMI, or maybe George Martin and/or engineer Norman Smith just thought it was a good idea. (And after all, who was listening with headphones in 1965/6?)
I would love for that early demo of “What Goes On” to be included. It is a fascinating glimpse into the Lennon McCartney songwriting process, and it is a miracle that this demo survived. How perfect it would be to present it here, in a Rubber Soul box.
@@jonathasantoz I’m not sure if they’d include it on Rubber Soul or on a Please Please Me SDE. They did add White Album takes of Across the Universe and Let it Be on the White Album SDE, not the LIB SDE
From what Ive heard, there is a good 16 mins of the "Think for Yourself" session out there. "Why such fury?!" lol Idk if that is its entirety but that track can be found on the bootleg "Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 7." Available as early as 1991...
There are still quite a few Beatles albums remaining, for deluxe reissue. Here's an idea for extras- Now is a good time to start issuing the Beatles live concerts. The ones that have been bootlegged, and are all over UA-cam. I suggest- locate the best sources, start polishing them up, and include one as a bonus with each set. Everyone knows the sound quality isn't great. We still want them.
Totally with you on the CD "EP" 👍 Also I feel MMT has been ignored and no full rooftop concert on physical format is a mistake. There's no way I'm paying some streaming service in perpetuity for the rest of my life. And that What Goes On acetate... we want to hear it!
Two Things not mentioned. The US stereo mix of "The Word" is different than the UK and on the mono mix of Norweigan Wood, there is a couch after "started to laugh"
I can’t wait for a Rubber Soul remix! Everything outlined is what I would expect too, even though I was unaware of the few takes of The Word and Michelle. Perhaps having a non fade out version of Michelle like what was in Rock Band would be awesome. And any MMT or Yellow Submarine box set would be amazing! We really need an updated remix of Hey Bulldog.
Hey Bulldog sounds great (and powerful) on the Yellow Submarine Songtrack CD, in fact, all the remixed songs on that CD sound fantastic. It would be nice to have Hey Bulldog run complete to the cold ending, as heard on the weaker sounding version found on the Rock Band CD.
Some good predictions, Andrew; I'm sure many will come to fruition. 'Rubber Soul' is my favorite Beatles album; it's the one that I grew up with. I look forward to hearing whatever outtakes exist, and a book with photos and ephemera from that period should be fantastic. Thanks again and take cake.
@The_PurpleApple Loved the 2017 remix a lot. It's my go-to version of the album. I think Giles and Sam have been doing a great job so far. I prefer listening to all the remixes done actually. However, there are tracks from Revolver wherein I prefer other mixes. I prefer the 2015 Mixes of Paperback Writer and Yellow Submarine. I also prefer listening to the 1966 Mix of She Said She Said.
Totally agree with all of your thoughts and ideas for the reissue. One other difference in songs on the UK vs. American version of Rubber Soul is "The Word". John's lead vocal is double tracked slightly differently in the verses. If they do offer a mono mix, I'm hoping for one with a little more top end. My copy from the 2009 mono cd boxed set sounds muffled and thick. I've added a significant amount of high end to brighten up the sound when I play it. Also, they need to make a new mono mix of "Day Tripper" to eliminate that bad sound dropout on the master after the guitar solo. It has been repaired on the new stereo versions but was still present on "Mono Masters".
Andrew, you said it correctly! @ the 2:09 Mark! original Phonographs of that time and before the 90's produced the real stereo mix. and after the 1980s... If these kids of today only knew, what stereo was! vs is of today! Are you sure about that 3 min Mix of the 12 bar orig, just being the cut for the cd? or was this from a vinyl press years back, being re released! I do think I heard the 3 min mix on the radio way before the Anthologies! I may be wrong on that though! Well, Nothing is removed from any tape! just that track from the tape is not copied over to that channel. take for instance an 8 track mix of Girl, could have that track, but only 7 tracks of the tape are used - removing that fuzz guitar. so, the master I would think should have the fuzz guitar mix on it! weather or not every cut had this fuzz guitar on it. that would need to be seen!
I myself do not buy the remixed box sets, but I also think a remix box set for Rubber Soul would be fantastic. There has got to still be a wealth of early versions, backing-only tracks, and alternate versions of all these wonderful songs that collectors would enjoy.
What About including live versions of "Nowhere Man", "If i needed Someone" and "Day Tripper" from the budokan or Germany Concerts? it would be great !!
You covered it all. And though i grew up with "ive just seen a face" and "its only love" as the opening songs for each side, ive recently been getting used the uk version only because i want listen to what the Beatles wanted me to hear. Thats more important. I would love to hear what Giles would do with those two songs. Both having wonderful acoustic guitar work and vocal harmonies, you know , those harmonies that only the Beatles can sing! Cheers!
@@oppothumbs1 They are but in America, Capitol messed with the tracklisting of both albums. I've Just Seen a Face is the opening song on the American Rubber Soul.
Revolver is my all-time favourite Beatle album. So, of course I have the box. That said, they could’ve waited a bit and made a Rubber Soul/Revolver box set. I mean, the Revolver box could have been put on 2 CDs. I can’t imagine the Rubber Soul material would take up much more than that time wise.
Here is my wishlist for the Rubber Soul box set, which is pretty much in line with yours: Stereo Remix album and singles Original Mono Mix Takes 1 and 2 of 12 Bar Original (Unedited with slate) I'm Looking Through You - Take 1 with slate This Bird Has Flown - Takes 1-3 with slate Wait - Pre Rubber Soul overdubs Other outtakes, including outtakes of Day Tripper & We Can Work It Out Paul's demo of Woman What Goes On demo
Since we only have the early albums left to get a deluxe set, not counting Magical Mystery Tour, it would be nice if we could get live recordings as a part of the set. If they have any full concert records that sound good I hope we could get a disc or two dedicated to that.
Great video, especially the last two seconds! 😉 Since we're making a wish list, I'd love a stereo vinyl LP included mastered all analog from the 1965 master tape. Yeah, I know...
I would love to hear the vocals centered on all the tracks. With digitally un-mixing the tracks possible, maybe make a discrete 4.0 or 4.1 multitrack on a DVD or Blu-ray. If other discs are also made available, have unheard or rare versions included. Also maybe other songs recorded at that time and either only released on singles or shelved projects.
Excellent video. I wish they'd include scans of handwritten lyrics, like from In My Life where John goes from naming specific places in Liverpool in early version of the song's lyrics to more general in later (...There are places I remember... though some have changed...).
I always sit, with a cuppa, and immerse myself in this awesome range of presentations. Such thorough research, unearthing a wealth of fascinating 'under the bonnet' info that I've been blissfully unaware of. I must try more of these mono mixes as I feel I've really missed out. Thank you as always. brilliant work :)
Rubber Soul took me forever to appreciate and I have no idea why. Growing up my favorite Beatles album was The White Album, followed closely by Revolver. It took me years and years to fully appreciate exactly how good Rubber Soul is.
As a lover of the Capitol Rubber Soul, I would love to see them include a version of that. I know you started off by saying that Giles would never do that, but there a a lot of people who really love that version.
In regard to Yellow Submarine, I still believe that the film version of It's All Too Much has a verse that I have never heard on a recording. I had hoped that it would be on the version released in 1999, but unfortunately. Am I deceiving myself with this notion? If I am not, a remix of Yellow Submarine should include that version of the song.
More good ideas. The only complete version of Much is in mono on bootleg. You can piece together bits from the movie and two stereo mixes and the mono complete, as I and others have done. I'd love the full George Martin score from YS as originally recorded, preferably in stereo. All sorts of possibilities. As usual, the general rule is "never give the fans what they want." They'd rather save stuff for the 100th anniversary release...when none of us are here.
It will always be overshadowed by Revolver, sadly. A shame, really, as it’s an incredible folk rock album. The fact that even Capitol couldn’t even mess it up is a testament to how well-connected the album is. The only album I find more cohesive through is A Hard Day’s Night.
Rubber soul underrated? Rubber soul has to be one of the most loved Beatles albums. If you want underrated listen to other British Invasion bands like the Hollie’s or the small faces they have tons of albums that got overlooked compared to the Beatles albums
@@Townshend90125 Right. Most critics and people, I thought, consider Rubber Soul comparable to Revolver. Of course, to me, the best songs are usually John's. Norwegian Wood / Nowhere Man/ Girl / In My Life. I can easily tell who wrote the majority of most songs. Well, John's 1980 Playview interview helped me hone that craft. And the best song on this record is Harrison's "If I Needed Someone".
I feel that the pre-Rubber Soul Beatles are underrated quite a bit across the board. ‘Beatlemania’ would really benefit from some love from Giles Martin.
Slightly off topic, but I bought the Pink Floyd Remix of "Animals" and it is fantastic. All of the Beatles remixes should have a DVD remix if at all possible. It is the ultimate way to listen if you have a nice home theater.
The Floyd albums do sound terrific In DSD, which is just the best format for music listening imo, but audio fidelity does bring large file sizes and the highest resolution DSDs can be huge. Not that I care personally. The Beatles albums in DSD would be a real treat and, given their importance to musical history, should have been remastered in that format years ago.
They should look at Magical Mystery Tour and Yellow Submarine album plus the songs recorded in February 1968 before going back with Rubber Soul. Have them as one boxset and have brand new mixes of all the songs, and include both films as 4K and Bluray. The Kinks did the double boxset with their albums Muswell Hillbillies and Everybody’s In Showbiz, Everyone’s A Star.
Nowhere Man used to have high frequency feedback in the vocal track but that got fixed with the Yellow Submarine Songbook remix. I'm Looking Through You had similar high frequency problems.
I'd like Apple to revert back to including a blu-ray with hi-res/5.1/Atmos mixes. It should be possible to include ALL relevant mixes and session outtakes etc. in a CD box set - new stereo/mono mixes, original mixes, US mixes. These albums were quite short, and stereo + mono mixes can readily fit onto a single CD, with room to spare for contemporary single tracks (Day Tripper/We Can Work it Out). The Revolver vinyl box was well done; the CD box not so much...
This socks-and-sandals listener of the British Beatles pressings is about to get the early U.S. versions for the first time. Thanks to YOU, I’m intrigued at the prospect of being to hear the difference. In my day, I sonically “stared” at jazz, film soundtrack or classical recordings. Never had I thought to do that to popular recording until I stumbled over your channel. Mahalo for bringing your in-depth take on music that played in the background of my life! You are helping me mine the musical gold that should be in all our lives.❤
The story I heard about the extreme stereo is so mundane it’s probably true. I can’t remember who told me, but it was somebody in radio and recording circles. Mono EMI record players were being fitted for the first time with stereo cartridges wired to mono. Shortly afterward, they discovered there was a quality control problem in that some record players were going out with their carts wired out of phase. They were getting records returned when it was the hardware that was defective. A temporary solution was to go back to making records with minimal centre information. There are a few EMI pop albums recorded in the last half of 1965 which are mixed this way. The Hollies mixed most of their stereo albums that way, of course, even when they were recording on 8 track.
Actually, I certainly feel that the 1963 demo of What Goes On clearly does belong on the Rubber Soul box as a related ‘in progress’, documentation also, as being a goodie in itself - for that one alone, I would have bought the box (not that I wouldn’t buy it anyway, but you get my point). And that absolutely wonderful demo of We Can Work It Out must still exist in full, or what? I do hope so - it would be nice if Sir Paul would agree to include it on the hopefully new deluxe box set! The little we’ve heard is so good that it should be shared - pretty please with sugar on top? If all we’ve heard of it is what’s left, please feel like including it, anyway! I have an understanding that Macca has an archive of his own that he wants to keep for his personal memories and I can understand him in many ways. Yet, I can also understand us fans too, still hungry for more historical and always wonderful Beatles material, no matter the fidelity. There’s got to be more home demos, a 1963 live recording on a university with songs not available even on bootlegs comes to mind, and of course an unedited In Spite Of All The Danger etc. I know, those mentioned were not Rubber Soul-related perhaps (with a few demos excepted maybe), but so what? Personally, I’d love to see that lovely «Beatle Talk» recording from the Think For Yourself-session would be wonderful to include in the future box set as well. If Apple/Universal could include those great ‘bio-interviews’ (which I love them for including) on an earlier archival release, they should do the same with that most entertaining ‘chat recording’ - but unedited, not excluding things like McCartney’s «Been having a shit lately, Megan?», it’s one of the very highlights! And «The Music Of Lennon/McCartney» and other nice visual material would be top cool, I fully agree with you, Andrew. I guess it’s way over the top to hope for that The Beatles/Universal/Apple could add McCartney’s «Unforgettable» Christmas give-away show as well - I guess this could become a big (and delightful) box! Dreams are free. Yes, we ‘Socks And Sandals’ are terribly greedy, aren’t we?
Great video as always! I'd love to see the inclusion of any LIVE material from their 65 tours, audio or video! What about their performance from Top of the Pops?! (I know that supposedly it was erased). If that cannot be found, include the remastered performances from France or any footage from their performances in Spain! Or even a full release of their footage from Shea Stadium? Wow if they were to include any of these performances, I would die very happy!
I would like a five LP vinyl set. The Giles Martin new mix, original UK mono and stereo reissues, the US version reissued (either mono or stereo) and a LP of different takes. The chances of that happening are truly below zero I know, but never mind. 😀
Rubber Soul 2024 Super Deluxe Edition Disc 1 2024 mix Disc 2 outtakes Disc 3 more outtakes Disc 4 Mono Mix Disc 5 Rubber Soul EP No blu ray disc And the book 100 pages hardback book 5CD 4 LP and EP 2 CD Set 1 CD Edition 1 LP Digital Dolby Atmos It’s will come out in October 2024 or November 2024
A Mono Album is a must and I agree it should come out separately 👍 Great idea about the blue ray. The Granada Music of Lennon and McCartney show is a fantastic slice of 1960s visual history. The raw Top of the Pops promo clips of I Feel Fine, Ticket to Ride, Day Tripper etc would be excellent too!!
Yes I would love it if they make the mono separately. I couldn't afford the Revolver box set. I would love to find a mono copy of that album. But it would be pricey
Hey man, I just want to say how much I enjoy your channel. You get to the point and edit your videos very well. And unlike some Beatles fans on UA-cam, you don’t waste time complaining or whining about their albums. Happy and proud to be a subscriber.
Could you please put out a video comparing the "Let it be" album with the "Let it be…naked" album? it would be great! In my eyes, the naked album is much better and more naturally and represents the project as it was meant to be (-; great channel!!!
I'd appreciate a stand-alone mono release of the white album since the correspondent box set included it as a blu-ray audio exclusive content. It's even ridiculous to have the mono Pepper and Revolver available on streaming, but not the white album.
I love the Rubber Soul album. Great songs, well played. I was happy with the remix of Revolver - listened to it in hi-res via Amazon and I was impressed - so more of the same, please! Great episode Andrew - you always get the balance right. Can I recommend you pick up an Arcam rPlay streamer if you see one going cheap online - discontinued but I'm sure there are some secondhand ones about. Thanks again.
Thanks, Andrew. Superb video again. My favourite Beatles channel. Most of all I want a great sounding remix. They can obviously improve the stereo imaging. A mono version would also be great, as well as a High Res version of the album. I agree that a 7 inch of Day Tripper and We can work it out would work. Not a CD though please. I hadn’t realised so few takes were done, so it’s a wait and see on the demo/sessions material. I wasn’t much of a fan of the 1966 tour, they sounded a bit out of tune and lacking in energy by then, so not so keen on live Rubber Soul tracks. Thanks again, Andrew 👌
I hope some of the full length session mixes featured in Rockband (especially The Word) are included here. Would also love to hear Girl with George's acoustic guitar fills in the first verse restored (you can barely hear it bleedling through in places on the official stereo mix). Another plus would be a bonus disk of the 'wet mix' with some liner notes as to who prepared it in the early 70's and why it was done - it's the only stereo RS I ever play.
As an American who grew up on the US version, I would really like to see a true mono (not a Capitol fold down) version of the US album included as a bonus disc. That way they wouldn’t have to put much effort into it, and it could give the super deluxe set some girth. I do have my fingers crossed that there are home demos that might make their way to this set. But I feel like with so few outtakes, they may as well include everything, including the tape of the group working out their harmonies. As for video elements, I’ve been seeing some high rez scans with what sounds like remastered audio of some of their concerts on UA-cam pop up here and there. Maybe an infamous concert, along with television appearances and promo videos? Or if there’s any video of them in the studio? I certainly hope that better attention to detail will go into the packaging as well.
Do we need another remix of Rubber Soul. I have the Beatles in Mono box set and the RS in that set sounds fine and addresses the hard panning issues of the stereo version. Just a thought.
Hi Andrew great upload as usual. As you say not a lot of outtakes and material probably available due to them recording the album so quickly. I would love as many early takes maybe with isolated tracks like Georges 12 string on if I needed someone or work in progress versions of the tracks like the anthology version of Norwegian wood. Not a big fan of 12 bar original so unless there exists demos we do not know about its hard to see what could be available. I agree about the session taped for the Christmas flexi lets face it much of the joy of revolver was the chat before takes of the other versions. What does everyone else think?
Hi Andrew. In answer to your question about the extreme separation on the stereo Rubber Soul mix: George Martin was at that time trying to please both the stereo buyers and mono buyers - More and more record player cartridges were able to play both mono and stereo (previously you'd have to purchase either one or the other). By keeping all the instruments hard left and right you get a much better balance when playing on a mono player. The further centre a sound is in the stereo field the louder it is, so by keeping them separated you get an all round better balance sound on mono reproducers. This was a period of fast transition and EMI wanted the public to start purchasing stereo records even if they had a mono player. Those who bought the stereo were few and far between, but the extreme separation certainly gave them their money's-worth on their posh stereograms. All the best from the UK!
As an American, it was many years before I ever heard "I'm Looking Through You" without the false start. I would hope there would be a false start version on the box set as I'm sure lots of British fans hadn't heard it and it's ingrained in our brains here across the Atlantic.
A very interesting video, I think we may get a 60th anniversary release of Please Please me in addition to Rubber Soul. Outtakes do seem pretty sparse for Rubber Soul but I wonder how many versions of Please Please me songs are in existence from that day long session they did. That would be interesting too
I’ve heard about half of the songs from the album, multiple takes have been booted(I’m not sure if they all were included on that copywrite dump nearly a decade ago. I think I read the other half are lost.
I wouldn't mind hearing some de-mixed and improved live recordings from the era, now that they're finally getting into the touring years with these reissues. Also, I had no idea that the snippet of Think for Yourself in Yellow Submarine was taken from that lost tape! I figured it was just edited that way for the film. That blows my mind.
For me, the ultimate Rubber Soul box set would include new stereo and mono versions of the UK album PLUS a new stereo version of the US Rubber Soul. I've always felt the "I've Just Seen a Face" side one opener and John's "It's Only Love" followed by "Girl" opening side two, not to mention the 2 false acoustic guitar starts to "I'm Looking Through You," made the Capitol stereo Rubber Soul the ultimate Beatles acoustic-driven record. Such a pleasant Sunday listen!
The USA version certainly has its charms. I read somewhere that Capitol were trying to capitalize on the folk-rock boom by omitting the tracks that didn't have that flavor. "Drive My Car" is a perfect example.
I loved the American stereo version of Rubber Soul with the vocals and overdubs on one side and the rhythm track on the other. It revealed for the first time ow the songs were constructed. The choice of songs was great as well, crating a folk rock Beatles album. "We Can Work it Out" could have been included, because of the tambourine if nothing else, and "Day Tripper" could have been put on "Revolver", along with "Drive My Car".
@@josephorsini4051 Yes, it's almost certain that Brian Wilson did not hear the original British tracklist of 'Rubber Soul'. Andrew Hickey says as much on one of his '500 Songs' podcasts, and I trust him entirely.
Your comment that 'run for your life' is no a pariah made me look again at the lyrics. I have heard it a thousand times but never really thought about what the lyrics mean. It will be a miracle if this song makes any kind of modern reissue. It is by far one of the darkest beatles songs.
With Paul’s announcement that they’ve completed another John Lennon demo I think they’re releasing something Anthology related this year. When they get around to Magical Mystery Tour they definitely have to include the four Beatles songs that appeared for the first time on Yellow Submarine. It would probably be on an EP but I hope the vinyl version will be a 45 like in the Let It Be box. It’s much easier to store than a 7” that’s floating around.
I doubt it would show up, but a RS box would be the right place for the jokey full "Think For Yourself" vocal overdub session. Love the channel, Andrew!
I feel like there needs to be a Magical Mystery Tour Remix at some point
yea, i like to have Strawberry Fields and Walrus in surround.
@@evertvdb000 Absolutely, also the songs need better remixes especially Your Mother Should Know
@@PossiblyJamesAlexander I agree, but I still love the current stereo mix of Your Mother Should Know.
@@welltoucansamatthatgame I do see what u mean
Actually what I really want to see is a true stereo remixing of the first four albums using the tech from the Revolver remix. A true stereo She Loves You!!!
I’ve been wishing for this too!
a stereo version of She Loves You would be the best thing I think they could possibly do. I would die
It surely is a pity, 'cause I would love to hear it
Hopefully someday they will release it there...?
In any case, probably this year we will get mono Rubber Soul and hopefully mono Please Please Me, With The Beatles, etc. in the near future(also please, mono MMT and the mono mixes of YS)
Rubber Soul is one of my favourite Beatles albums. Not only that it should be remixed, but also add Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out as bonus tracks.
Also it should contain the original unstretched photo as a bonus.
Yes! Definitely ! 🙂
After the Revolver Box Set, I am all set but Rubber Soul would be icing on the cake. One can never have enough of The Beatles. Can't wait.
@ultramet agree, 100% and you may have already seen it on UA-cam, but they have a 20 minute overdub session for “Think for Yourself which is an absolute blast. If you’ve not seen it yet I highly recommend it, it’s a lot of fun and their back-and-forth is hysterical!
@@bruceernst7162 I think the entireity of that's a bit much, considering there IS so much out there, like the electric version of Michelle.
Boy, you've got that right! Beatles forever! I collect everything of those Liverpool Lads!
I think a 'Psychedelic Beatles' box including MMT/Yellow Sub is a great idea with plenty of scope for demos, early mixes, outtakes, etc. Years ago, I burned a single disc cd-r of such a compilation, including 'Christmas Time'.
I would love this Psychedelic Beatle box
I've got bootlegs of outtakes. Great stuff.
I did the exact same thing as you, including Christmas Time Is Here Again, hahahaha
Called it "Magical Yellow Mystery Submarine Tour"
Yellow Submarine is so-o-o underrated - I love every one of those tunes that didn't show up on other albums!
Yes!
I like the idea of a MMT/YS combined box set. Can we add Lady Madonna/Inner Light to that?
Apple would do well to have you as an official consultant on this box set reissue programme, or any other project they have in mind.
I agree. You definitely know your stuff. Another great video, thanks.
I hope they include a Blu Ray with Dolby Atmos and DTS mixes. And some video too.
I won't purchase it without a hi res / ATMOS Blu ray. I passed on revolver because of the lack of a Blu ray. At least issue these on their own!
@@gregcross5579 Same here, I'll also pass without it. I hate that Giles even said it was a mistake, but they never released it stand-alone or anything.
I appreciate for life to hear that studio chatter from "Think for Yourself"
I swear Paul sings two songs that make me feel crazy hearing.
Paul hums "doo doo, doo, doo-doo!" two times; George picks it up and sings: "It's the Woody Woodpecker Show!"
Later Paul sings the credits for the TV show Stingray: Aqua Marina.
"Marinaaaa... Aqua Marinaaa"
Thanks for taking the time to do this Andrew. Apple listen up - this is what we want!
Yes! We get it here first!! :)
@@moondogaudiojones1146 It's great that Capitol once included that false start on Rubber Soul on the 2004-2005 box set "The Capitol Albums Vol. 2".
Also "Yesterday...And Today" which is close to being a Greatest Hits collection.
the plot twist that you own the sole copy of an original What Goes On demo is insane!! what other treasures are you hiding Andrew!!
You are the man sitting on that original acetate of What Goes On! ♥
I would love for that early demo of “What Goes On” to be included. It is a fascinating glimpse into the Lennon McCartney songwriting process, and it is a miracle that this demo survived. How perfect it would be to present it here, in a Rubber Soul box.
It would feel like the first version of Yellow Submarine.
@@jonathasantoz I’m not sure if they’d include it on Rubber Soul or on a Please Please Me SDE. They did add White Album takes of Across the Universe and Let it Be on the White Album SDE, not the LIB SDE
@@doodledangernoodle2517 That makes sense, considering they release the things based on the time it was made.
RUBBER SOUL IS MY 2ND FAVORITE BEATLES ALBUM. CAN'T WAIT FOR THE STEREO REMIXES THE MOST
What's your first?

@The_PurpleApple Loved the 2017 remix a lot. It's my go-to version of the album. I think Giles and Sam have been doing a great job so far. I prefer listening to all the remixes done actually. However, there are tracks from Revolver wherein I prefer other mixes. I prefer the 2015 Mixes of Paperback Writer and Yellow Submarine. I also prefer listening to the 1966 Mix of She Said She Said.
@@RemasteringMcCartney_AndreyM Mine too! :)
"When you have a hammer, everything can look like a nail." - What a great saying! And if I had a hammer, I'd take a whack at "Please Please Me."
The song that started it all..plsplsme.
I myself do not buy the remixed box sets, but I also think a remix box set for Rubber Soul would be fantastic. There has got to still be a wealth of early versions, backing-only tracks, and alternate versions of all these wonderful songs that collectors would enjoy.
10:33 The vocal harmony is three-part: John, Paul, George.

We need Andrew to be upon the Apple team for these remix sets.
Here is my wishlist for the Rubber Soul box set, which is pretty much in line with yours:

Original Mono Mix
Takes 1 and 2 of 12 Bar Original (Unedited with slate)
I'm Looking Through You - Take 1 with slate
This Bird Has Flown - Takes 1-3 with slate
Wait - Pre Rubber Soul overdubs
Other outtakes, including outtakes of Day Tripper & We Can Work It Out

Thanks Martin. Glad you enjoy them!
Rubber Soul took me forever to appreciate and I have no idea why. Growing up my favorite Beatles album was The White Album, followed closely by Revolver. It took me years and years to fully appreciate exactly how good Rubber Soul is.
I am in this boat and when it hit me I realized it was their best work
As a lover of the Capitol Rubber Soul, I would love to see them include a version of that.
Rubber soul is very underrated. I don’t know why it is overlooked by revolver? 🤷♂️
It will always be overshadowed by Revolver, sadly. A shame, really, as it’s an incredible folk rock album. The fact that even Capitol couldn’t even mess it up is a testament to how well-connected the album is. The only album I find more cohesive through is A Hard Day’s Night.
George Harrison himself said Revolver was like the second record of a Double Rubber Soul Album. He considered them both to be one single work.
This was a great video. Please do this for the remaining Beatles catalogue for potential album remixes. Fascinating information. Thanks.
Nowhere Man used to have high frequency feedback in the vocal track but that got fixed with the Yellow Submarine Songbook remix. I'm Looking Through You had similar high frequency problems.
I heartily endorse a combined MMT/YS set; the music goes together well, and that's how I have it on a one-hour iTunes album.
Glad to have been of help, Jim!
Great points you made here... I too belong in the "Sox & Sandals" club.... Hope Apple listen to you...Til then... Stay Gold!

Great idea about the blue ray.
I love the idea of putting a blueray documentary of the making of the boxset along with a hi res mix into the boxset.

Ooo- your idea about making MMT and Yellow Submarine a double-set is 🔥
I'm looking forward to a Rubber Soul Box Set. Rubber Soul is one of my favorite Beatles albums. I wonder if you've heard any updates on it's release?
Nothing yet!
I do hope Apple watch your superb video Andrew - and take your recommendations as they’re all great ideas and common sense too. Thank You Sir 😎👍
I would like to know if there's any news on more Lennon box sets...
Do we need another remix of Rubber Soul. I have the Beatles in Mono box set and the RS in that set sounds fine and addresses the hard panning issues of the stereo version. Just a thought.
But the mono box set is in mono, and a stereo version is wanted
Apple should remaster the US and UK versions. And include both versions in a box set.
I sure hope that Apple is listening. Well done as always Andrew.
Andrew, thank you very much for your archeologie on Rubber Soul album! Warmest regards from the sunny Brazil!
Thanks for listening, Braz!
Give us WE CAN WORK IT OUT and DAY TRIPPER in the super deluxe box!! And their concerts and music videos too!!!
As an American, it was many years before I ever heard "I'm Looking Through You" without the false start. I would hope there would be a false start version on the box set as I'm sure lots of British fans hadn't heard it and it's ingrained in our brains here across the Atlantic.
I second that motion!
@@wheatonna I think that’s probably true. It’s also likely the version that inspired Brian Wilson to make Pet Sounds.
Peter Cobbin’s remix is by far my favourite of all.
I’d buy the crap out of a rubber soul box set BUT a Magical Mystery Tour one would also be freaking amazing
Something I'd like to see in this new release is the mono loud cut.
Its not a very good cut.
I doubt it would show up, but a RS box would be the right place for the jokey full "Think For Yourself" vocal overdub session.
Love the channel, Andrew!
