Teraflex Alpine IR Track Bar Update

- Well, its been 1.5 years and we gone through two of these trackballs. Both started clicking and clunking. Been seeing a lot of complaints about this product on the internet and I can confirm the problem. For the amount of money we spent on this, I must say.... I am disappointed and would not encourage anyone to spend their money on it in the future. I am still extremely happy with the Steersmarts track bar. After swapping out the rubber joint for poly, Iv had no problems with it. Drop a line in the comments what you think we should install in its place!
I was about to buy one of those. Thank God I saw this in time.
Just doing my civic duty sir,
I'm so glad I went with steersmarts. I replaced everything, I had the synergy brace at first, but after awhile, it failed and turned out to be garbage. I would recommend all steersmarts in the front. It drives so much nicer. I miss your guys banter, but I understand. It's life.
did you call synergy? bet they talked to you like you were an idiot and it was ur fault?
Completely agree, replaced all their stuff on the front end and wow. Night and day difference between stock and SS.
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD no, I should have
Keep us posted on what misty decides to do!
God bless!
Absolutely! Love ya, friend!
I went with the yeti and it’s 100%
Excellent choice… Iv been happy with mine.
Ya there stuff is heavy duty.. I put it on my gladiator and jl.
Track bars are nothing to mess with pal🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
Just ordered a Metalcloak tb. The ease of their joints and customer service made my decision
Mc has seriously, one of the best customer service departments
My buddy runs Douetch Offroad in Arizona and sold me the new teraflex hd IR track bar that you have and I installed it on my new JL diesel. One day later it was loose and doing the same thing. He called teraflex and they sent a new one. Four weeks later the same thing. They warrantied it AGAIN to their credit. So onto the third one, and this one took 10 weeks to get here. It is now doing the same thing. They’ve now warrantied it 4 times. I’m f**king done. I love this shop (not their fault) and I love my other teraflex products. But I just want my money back and a new brand. I’m so sick on this and glad to see I’m not the only one, but also sorry you had to deal with it. Good luck! What do you now recommend???
Glad to see you guys are doing well. Hope things are moving in the right direction with your goals Mo!
They are, thanks brother. We are growing… amazing things happening
I agree 100%, if you let someone in need borrow something, you should never have to ask for it back.
Borrow something and make it a priority to give it back as soon as you are finished using it.
This…. You said tht perfectly
My tarraflex bar just took a crap!
Thinking about a synergy? Any thoughts or did you find s solid alternative?
Steersmarts is the best…. 2nd choice would be rpm
Ive been using a jks for 2 years no issues on my 2019
Always happy to hear stuff like that
Good to know.
Just installed one that came with my Alpine RT3 kit. I'll keep an eye/ear on it.
Thank you.
UPDATE:
300 Miles and mine is clunky like a sumbitch. I'll have them replace it and keep it on the shelf as a spare.
I just ordered a yeti to replace the teraflex. Their alpine arms have been great but the trackbar had the same issues you describe. With it on you could feel the play where the end met the collar. I didn't even bother with the warranty I don't want another one.
I figured it was a defective one… seems they just tell people it’s normal… regardless… not want I wanna listen to while driving.
that's a very interesting problem with the track bar... i'm surprised teraflex hasn't engineered that out yet.
Exactly why I do not buy their stuff. Surprised more people don't call them out on some of the problems they created with their products. If more people would let them know the issues maybe they would make better products.
From what I understand, they tell people this is normal now..... But yea, Teraflex is one of them brands,,,, that value their name WAY. more then they should
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD interesting. Normal. Yeah... No. It is not normal lol.
Running a Metalcloak track bar with no issues .
This is one on the list, we will see who wins
I know y’all don’t like running the same products but why not use what works and get a yeti?
because, we don't like running the same stuff LOL XD
I like synergy adjustable track bars. I have them front & rear.
Awesome and glad to hear it. Synergy stuff aint really for us thou.
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD why ? you might have just saved me $300.. thanks
You loan tools! I'm coming over! Glad to see you back on the Tube!
LOL, problem with loaning tools,,,,,,, they rarely get returned. LOL
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD can I borrow your Jeep?
Lol
YETI!💪🏽
Iv been happy with SS in Bromance… cannot argue tht suggestion.
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD love mine but I'm gonna ad a Synegy sector shaft brace. Only thing I'm worried about is the thickness of the Yeti and will they be compatible.
Just put in a yeti about a month ago
Frunt and back the size difference is crazy
Love my Yeti, an easy one to recommend in most scenarios.... the question is, will Misty run what I run.
Haha no she will try to find a better one lol
I have clicking in my teraflex track bar sent them a video and they said it’s normal. I’m going to be changing mine out to something else.
Think they got sick of everyone complaining about it…. Though it’s performing fine… I don’t see tht much movement as ok… especially how much they charge for tht thing.
Same problem here
I ended up getting a steersmarts yeti pro track bar. The clicking is gone and feels so much better while driving.
How much you pay
I have a synergy front and rear. They’ve been quiet so far but the front rubs my ARB diff cover. It’s kind of self clearanced over time lol. Thinking about replacing it with either a metalcloak or rock jock (since my control arms are all rock jock). Both Currie and metalcloak are 1.25 vs 1.5 for the synergy and many others which allows a bit more clearance. Things are so tight under the Jeep.
Yea, adding a HD diff cover seems to make the problem common...
You look like you could be Luke Rudowski’s twin brother
Started my build with this trackbar and exact same issue. There team was awesome and sent a replacement next day. Swapped out and same issue. Before getting rid of the bar I thought screw it hit it with an impact and see if I can get rid of the play….. well after killing it with the impact no more play. Unfortunately never put it back on to see if it was an official fix but seemed reasonable. I’ve got the MC on there now and it isn’t as tight feeling as the TF was and I always have to check the damn jam nut on it. Sooo I’ve been thinking about giving TF another go. We will see.
Haven’t tried MC, steersmarts was rock solid… rpm has also done well for our jeep….
That’s awesome that you recommend RPM, they are local to me here in Az. Im about to install apex/RPM steering on my JT later today. Honestly if you haven’t replaced the trackbar hit it with an impact until there is no gap. Im curious if that would fix it. Im still thinking about going back to it just because it is an absolute unit of a trackbar.
This one is long gone 😂
Haha thanks for the reply and thanks for the content man!!
I built my own track bar, chromoly tubing with Johnny joints and I've been running it for about 3 years now and not a single issue.
Can’t go wrong with tht combo
I just replaced my teraflex TB today because of the same issue!
Kinda frustrating a company as ‘prolific’ as Teraflex would design something so…. Underwhelming
I recently went with a Core4x4 rear track bar, hella stout and their rear upper adjustable control arms. Went their tier4 on both, Currie Johnny joints at both ends!
I hear good things about core 4x4. We will keep em in mind. Thanks brother
Bummer, I have all Teraflex and no issues so far (2 years) but I will be keeping an ear and eye out for any developments.
I guess if you determine that there is a solid quality bar, please let us know. Thanks for posting!!
Iv been happy with my Steersmarts TB. After swapping the rubber bushing for the poly, its been flawless
@JL LIFE OFFROAD, why not just get another STEER SMARTS trackbar? Should last & a very high quality part.
I know iv loved mine,,, iv suggested it, but end of the day, its Mistys jeep,,, she gets to decide.... she likes running what I don't, for the most part.
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD my wife is pretty much same way lmao
I had my for about 30 day and had the same issue but I was able to return it. I’m glad didn’t order a second one because I’ll be pretty mad right now.
Yea, think we paid $380ish for this one… wtf… this should cost $200
The heim joint on the axle side of my track bar wore out and it was a pain to replace. There is no room to get the nut on/off the backside. I wish the aftermarket one would have come with a flagnut instead of a regular nut. The threads were pretty rusted after just a few years and I had to heat it to get it off. I made sure to put a lot of grease on the new one before installing it.
When you do take it off… it’s easy enough to weld a ‘flag’ onto the nut… will definitely help out in the future.
I’m not gonna lie… the nicest thing about the JLs… they came pre-rusted 😂
The j10 however….
TNT Customs track bar with summit machine joints. Amazing track bar.
I’ll have to look into them
I’m actually going to buy front and rear track bars. I was going to get the Metalcloak unless it would be worth spending a lot more for Steersmarts.
I wouldn't say $60ish is a lot more - definitely worth the extra money imo.
@@HoneyBadgerAP would it be worth going with the pro bushing? I thought I saw that the standard ones don’t last to long.
@@FlyFish402 the standard rubber bushings will last plenty long, but people don’t realize that even when brand new there will be some movement in them when they cycle cycle the steering side to side when the vehicle, not realizing that there is a ton of force required to turn big tires when you’re stationary and that the rolling resistance is greatly decreased the faster you go. Some will argue with that, but I’ve had a lot of experience with them at this point.
That being said, i do believe the polyurethane bushing is worth the slight difference in price between the standard and pro series. The bushing is a harder durometer and will rotate 360 degrees because the poly is pressed into the sleeve and coated in a grease where the rubber is vulcanized onto the outer sleeve of the standard bushing, which is another way that the bushings fail (people torquing them track bar bolts down while the suspension is at full droop - doing this puts the rubber bushing I to a constant state of bind and it then over rotates when you get compression and it tears it apart).
Poly for the rear isn’t as important in my opinion because that axle isn’t attached to the steering linkages, but you can get the poly bushings and have them pressed into that housing as well if you really want to go that route.
I put the Teraflex trackbar on my 2019 JL when they very first came out. It never fit right on the joints. When fully torqued it had too much play in both joints and you could physically twist the trackbar with your hand to get it to clank. Whenever I hit something hard or hit the brakes hard it would clank. Teraflex said they were going to redesign it, but I eventually didn’t want to wait any longer and Northridge 4x4 was nice enough to let me swap it out for a Steer Smart over a year later. The Steer Smart is beefier and has quieted down the front end. That would be my recommendation
Yea, Iv had SS in my JL for going on 2.5 years… it’s been a solid piece… TF is disappointing… Im not eager to try any of their stuff in the future. They are just over priced for what they are
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD their lift kits are good specifically the control arms are great as there is no maintenance and their axels are supposed to be nice, but I haven’t tried those yet.
The joints on my Teraflex track bar are totally shot too. I’ll probably go to one with Johnny joints.
Teraflex quality has sadly decreased
I've hard creeping n popping here n there. Pulled the TF Trackbar off a week back and measured 0.030 to 0.035 movement (rotation not taken into measurement) from end to the inner split nut sleeve. (Split nut sleeve itself had no movement to main trackbar).
Running OEM now but steering wheel beyond adjustment... Just figuring if I want to try to get this fixed... Or just weld it... Or buy another mtg trackbar.
oooof, well I can recommend what I have in my Jeep. Iv had no problems after swapping the poly joint in. This Teraflex TB should cost HALF what they charge.
Since when did Jordan get a jl?? And why'd you give him your trackbar?! 😂😂🤣🤣🥰
You can't see me,,, but the buffering circle is just going in my head right now
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD 😂😂
I haven't even begun on suspension stuff. That's maybe do to the fact that haven't decided what type of off roading I'm going to do, but I am putting on some default stuff that's useful in various types of off roading
No worries man, hopefully when u are ready to upgrade.. we help guide u in the right direction
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD I'm leaning towards light to outlanderish trails with some obstacles, if that makes sense and a lot of mudding.
I've had zero issues with my Synergy steering parts!
Had the same thing happen with my core 4x4 track bar. Still under warranty and they replaced it. If it happens again, ill probably get another with out the johnny joint at the upper end and see if that helps
Steersmarts has been solid for me. Heavy duty and thiccccc. Had a problem with the rubber bushing, but after swapping the poly in,,, it has been perfect
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD thank you. I’ll keep that in mind if mine fails again
Cool tat!
Missed you guys. Yep I have one of those people's too that borrow and never return. I cut them off. 😂😂😁
Dude…. I have to be prepared to just GIVE away whatever I loan out. Wtf
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD I hear ya Brother!!😁😂😂
If i were yall id just go ahead and get the steer smarts
SS makes great stuff.. been super happy with mine
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD i got mine from a guy that sold his Jeep got the track bar and draglink for 225 and that was both, everything in good working order but he failes to mention it was the top mount draglink so i have to order the bottom mount because ive only got a 2.5 inch lift on it right now
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD if yall ever make it to north east tn, id love to chat with ya and pick your brain on some ideas for my and my wifes jlus hers is getting there and mine im not happy with what i have, i am when i get it, but i see something i want to replace the stuff i just got for it lol anyways happy trailing
I know you know better, but did you have the right size bolt on the frame side? This happened to me on my RK. The bolt size is larger on the RK, and it was clunky-clunkity-clunking. Mine was different, as my wheel centering would change after trail runs... just a little.
fyi, I'm on year 3 with my RK, but don't wheel nearly as rough as you folks do. No issues seen with RPM steering yet either.
Yea, it was running fine for about 1.25 year... then the clicking started. Teraflex just seems like one of them brands that think they can charge more then its worth.... I wanna say this one was the most expensive TB when we both it
If this happens on the track bar it makes me not want to go with Alpine IR control arms…
Any updates on what they said?
which track bar brace do you prefer, ss or syn? I like the bearing over the bushing
Of those two? Steersmarts, in a heart beat. Not sure how much u watch on our channel, but flex is not an issue with SS
Do you, or have you used the synergy or steersmart trackbar /
sector shaft brace with the steersmart track bar?
Used the ss TB with the easily production SS track bar brace
Used the synergy brace with rock krawler and Teraflex trackbars
Check out Iron Rock Offroad Trac Bars hella beef!!! it made my old rubicon express one look like a toothpick
LOL, a toothpick would make Rubicon Express look like a tooth pick!! JKJK I kill myself!
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD lol
Since jumping up to 37s - I think all that added weight and pressure - makes the track bars wear prematurely - I am on my 2nd one myself just made it under the wire for warranty with Rubicon Express - they actually redesigned theirs but I am not so optimistic it will last lol sadly :|
IDK man, my Steersmarts one has been SOLID. love it, abuse it and never question it. You may wanna look into them if u decide to go away from RE
Core 4x4 give them a try I p icked up front and rear.
I hear nothing but good things about them
Yoooooooo! What’s good folks
Living the dream!
I'm not the smartest guy but it seems to me that track bars don't need these fancy "johnny joint" type ends. I prefer solid mount ends and not a fan of split sleeve adjustable track bars unless its the Yeti.
It wasn't the joint that failed, it was the sleeve that allowed the end to flop around
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD is that track bar manufactured in house or is Teraflex outsourcing it? 🤔
Being Teraflex… I’d assume out sourcing.. but I could be wrong 🤷♂️
Let me know what track bar you think is the best to go with. I need a new one to go with the TMR 2.5 ton tie rod and drag link I will b installing. Thankx
Love the channel keep the vids coming
Thanks brother, I can easily say Steersmarts has handled my wheeling very well. The only time its not viable is if you don't have space upfront..... (it rubs into aftermarket diff skids)
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD a lot off the "fourm" guys say the center hollow adjusting point on the streermarts is a weak point and it's better to just have the end adjustment... , also said double pinch bolts is over complicating things.... what is your take ? Thanks
so what brand did you go with? I had metal cloak less 4k miles on it and now getting dealth wobble. The nut jam comes lose and will not tighten so I get play with it. Decided to tera flex and didn't want anything that a nut jam at the end because of my experience with Metal Cloak. Almost got Snyergy as its set up is almost the same. Let me know what you guys like out there.
I’d recommend steer smarts… Ben in my jeep since 2018… solid
We replaced this tb with rpm… however that one has Jan nuts
What? An aftermarket company with a very good reputation for quality parts had a design failure? Not like that's something that doesn't happen every single day in the OEM and aftermarket world... This is where it pays to be smarter than a trac bar. While no one wants to pay for defective parts , an actual tech could have fixed that in less time than it took to film this video. For starters, fix the problem as soon as you notice it so the threads arn't destroyed by constantly beating each other to death. Second take a cut off wheel and fix the damn clamp so it can tighten properly. Third, instead of making a stupid video trashing teraflex, call them and explain what's going on, tell them to update their clamp, and send you a new trac bar with the update. When I was younger I used to always wonder why old guys bitched about the younger generation being stupid. Now that I'm old, I get it.
Rebuilding the RK track bar should only take you about 10-15 min...that’s the route I’ve taken (several times)
Lol… WTF 😂
Metal cloak
I have a synergy track bar setting in the garage. It’s yours if you want it
Thanks for the offer my friend! I try to stay away from their stuff.
You having problems with it?
@@JLLIFEOFFROAD no problems at all. I put a metalcloak 3.5 lift on and used the track bar that came with it. I have no use for it, and thought that you could use it as your diagnoses one. You know sense you no longer have on. Fire me an email.

Check out Clayton Off Road. Their trackbar is stout! I've put it through its paces.

@@JLLIFEOFFROAD Give em a call and ask for Adam, tell him I sent ya. You won't be disappointed.
I also had really good luck with Clayton Track bars on my 2019 and 2020 JLUR. for my upcoming Eco-Diesel I am actually thinking about giving the Rusty's Track bars a shot. however if I don't swap to those I will 100% run Clayton again. I do plan to run the Clayton overland+ arms either way again.

Yeti
My TF track bar has started the clunking after a few months of only road driving. Didn't even get to put it on any trails. Very unhappy with TF.
Put a yeti in and everything is quiet and smooth.
I ran the same track bar and had the same issue in about 6months.... Not a fan of that teraflex bar at all.
Sorry to hear it, but seems to be a very common complaint about this thing.

I have had a Steinjager for a while now and have had no problems with it !
KILLER, ill look into them
I would be very careful with the steinjager track bars - there is little to no engineering $ spent on those and they failed at an embarrassing and dangerously low number of cycles...and the failure mode was snapping in half. just FYI
@@HoneyBadgerAP noted good sir, 🤵♂️
