  • The lyrics to a magnificent Harry Chapin song and family favourite.
It should be noted that this is my favourite version and is performed live. As a result it has some lyrical variations from the studio/album version. The lyrics posted match the lyrics in this live version. If you'd prefer the lyrics to another version, please leave a comment.

I saw him in Worcester, MA, on December 1, 1977. I was 16, it was my first concert. I was living in Boston in July 1981 when I heard on the radio that he was killed in a car accident on the Long Island Expressway. I couldn’t believe it. We lost a legend that day.

There's always an obvious undertone of pain while trying to seem happy in the songs i've heard from him so far. Are they all like this?

I've only heard a couple of songs by Harry Chapin that didn't have a touch of sorrow in them. Even so, he's amazing. I mean, even 30,000 lbs of bananas (which is an upbeat number) quickly mentions that the truck driver barely lost his head. I missed that for the longest time before realizing that the trucker was decapitated, albeit barely, lol.

They are. No-one sings happy songs, or at least no-one over 12

Not all of them, but many. Try listening to 30,000 pounds of bananas

The deeper you get into his catalogue, you'll hear there are indeed happy songs. However, he did write about situations or people he encountered and we all know life is not constantly sunshine and rainbows, thus reality in his his story songs.

You might want to correct the spelling of Idaho, but thanks for publishing this video.
