This is my favorite Harry Chapin song. I had teary eyes all through this beautiful and solemn song. There were times in my life I may have felt this way when I was young.
Thank goodness I found someone 41 years ago who filled up my life, and we have been married those 41 years.

I wish that I was beautiful... the remaining lyrics, are the story of my life. Thank you for this song. RIP Harry Chapin.

I saw Harry Chapin in concert in Watertown, NY at Jefferson Community College in 1975. It was a great place to grow up but I can see where the inspiration for a better place to be comes from.

This song is sorta like the story of my life. :( One of Harry's best. I saw him do it live at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Ahhh. Harry was so much fun. He knew how to entertain! R.I.P my friend.

This used to be my favorite of Harry's songs, until I came to realize that "You Are The Only Song" is Harry's love song to his audience. Harry was always better received in concert than on studio recordings. They audiences loved him - and he returned the love. That, more than anything, was what collectively made his concerts a special, unequaled event.

Great song, having been stationed at Ft Drum I couldn't help but laugh at the opening about Watertown.

I've always wanted to make a movie based on this song. Pretty much exactly like the lyrics. All you would need is access to a tool and die factory at night. A bar room and a bedroom for scenes. It would definitely be a blockbuster.

There's tons of old factories in watertown and that bar he's talking about colesantes is still there lol why not film it here

Thanks for doing this and sharing. A couple of small corrections if you get a round tuit. First it should be "Tool and Die," not "Jewel and Die." Second it should be "as the clothes all fell around her," not "as the close all fell around her." Other than that, spot on!

We have a Swedish cover mostly made famous by Lill Lindfors, as in this clip. The Swedish translation of the chorus would in English be:
If you want to, then I'd love to,
I'd love to if you'd like
Cause when you're lonely you're noone
but TOGETHER IS A WAY OF BEING THERE (The title)
The Swedish text was written by a writer, journalist and actually humour tv show host, Åke Cato.
