I think this list only counts the arbitrary “city proper” borders, when counting total metro area I think Moscow is bigger than Istanbul. Because it has been the center of the world since the 4th century. The old name of the city was Constantinople and it had been the capitol of Rome for a 1,000 years.

About 75% of Russian territory is in Asia, the other 25% is in Europe. 75% of the population live in the smaller European side, and the other 25% live in the Asian side. Moscow (and every other major Russian city) is in the European side.
The Asian side of Russia pretty much just holds Siberia and a massive empty wasteland, all the people love on the Western edge in the part of Russia that is European.

I thought so too, but Ural Mountains serve as the border of Europe and Asia and Ural Mountains are in Russia and Moscow/St. Petersburg are both west of Ural Mountains and therefore technically in Europe.
However, I really think Europe should not be a separate continent and it should be called Eurasia (Europe and Asia as one) like many other countries call it.
