Blues Guitar - Improvising - Guitar lesson by Joe Murphy

- In this video, i take a look at various ways to improvise.
To be good at improvisation, we need to be able to be able to play various things in as many positions as possible.
One of your aims should be, to begin learning the notes all over the fretboard. This along with all the other things mentioned in the video, will help grow your musical vocabulary.
Below are links to the videos I mentioned in the above lesson:

Just ran across your videos, Joe. I'm hopeful again. I've been watching UA-cam vids for years, and they don't seem to get me anywhere. I joined your Patron. I really like the way you are teaching. I've watched most of them on UA-cam, already. As I said, I'm hopeful now (again.) I didn't see if you explain some differences (besides the obvious ones) between finger picking and using a flat pick. I have always had trouble hanging onto a pick..... it slides loose. About 50 years ago I used a pick without that issue. Don't know what is happening now. I have been working only with my fingers for years. Anyway, thanks, and I be around and in touch,
Hey Thomas, great to hear from you and thanks so much for your support over at Patreon. Glad you enjoy the videos, hope you enjoy the exclusive content on Patreon, there is a lot of it. All the best
This is probably the most important lesson manu need to learn. Thank you so much for this explanation
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Glad you enjoyed the video. just in case you are interested i have a patreon page where i have lots of exclusive content. here is link www.patreon.com/joesguitarlessons
You are great. You are not so overwhelming. One can absorb it
Thanks Mike, for taking the time to comment. Glad you enjoyed the video. just in case you are interested i have a patreon page where i have lots of exclusive content. here is link www.patreon.com/joesguitarlessons
Love your approach. I'm not interested in learning how to play Eric's work note for note. After all he doesn't do that. Listen to Bill Broonzy play "Hey Hey", then Eric's "Hey Hey" on Unplugged; not much alike except for basic melody. That's what made Broonzy Broonzy and Clapton Clapton. This is why I love the blues over all other guitar forms: The uniqueness of each performer is allowed. Thank you for your encouraging insight into that aspect. I do most of my learning after I watch a well done video like yours, then head to my couch on the back porch where the real learning takes place.
You are helping me to get going with my guitar after struggling for a while, thank you.
Thanks Paul, for taking the time to comment. Glad you enjoyed the video. just in case you are interested i have a patreon page where i have lots of exclusive content. here is link www.patreon.com/joesguitarlessons

Hi Eddie.... Like you a mature learner...........I tried hanging around the crossroads in the middle of Bexhill .A dark stranger approached me and I thought >>Here We go...but I think he just wanted to know if I wanted help to cross the road :) Onwards and upwards

Comment from Montréal: althought I take courses locally in face to face, I enjoy shopping around to see what youtube has to offer, to improve faster. There are 2-3 guys like you that I like on youtube, each with your own slot in the musical rainbow. I like the way you teach the Blues, easy to understand. Keep the good work !!

Thank you for this lesson, Joe. I'm working on blues basics, and need some guidance on starting points (scales, rhythm & lead, alt chord positions, etc.). I'll def be checking out your ref. videos.
Hi Sharon, thanks for getting in touch. I always suggest people get started with my blues guitar for complete beginners it is a seven part series explaining most of the basics the first two parts are available here on UA-cam and a further five parts over a Patreon, if you are interested.

Completed 1 to 7 and really enjoyed the progress. Thought Id look at this before back tracking for my musical vocabulary!
Loads of helpful info to boot. Thanks Joe.
Great stuff Harry, sounds like your making good progress
Like Eddie Connor I'm in my 70s and find your lessons an inspiration. It's good to hear someone chatting about the music as well as teaching the specifics. Colin (Man City) - sorry Eddie
Hi Colin thanks for taking the time to comment, shame you’re a Man City fan ! Ha ha Really glad you are enjoying the lessons. If you are interested I have a Patreon page with lots more material see link below, I can use all the support I get thanks again Colin
Great stuff thank you Joe. Your style and content is very helpful indeed. I have come back to guitar after many years and now focus on finger style acoustic blues. So this is right up my street. I have downloaded Muddy Waters The Folk Singer which is just £4.99 on iTunes - what a steal for a fabulous album. I discovered you through seeing Eric Clacton play Why Did You Leave Heaven by Big Bill Broonzy in his film on touring by train back in 1997. I'd never heard it before and was therefore delighted when i found your version to learn. Many thanks & more please!
Hi Nigel, and thanks very much for getting in touch always great to hear how people are getting on with the lessons. I have done a few big bill bronzy songs as well as quite a few blues, so hopefully that will keep you busy for a while. Have you checked out Mississippi River blues another nice broonzy song. Be sure to check my website if you haven’t already it’s much easier to find things there. Thanks for watching and long may it continue all the best
Great lesson, thanks very much :-)
Just down loaded that Muddy Waters. Brilliant . Really useful class. Cheers

I am one of your Patreon members and am wondering do you get. your nails done on your right hand or do you do it yourself...? I am thinking about doing mine because when fingerpicking my nails BREAK and CRACK
Hi Greg great to hear from you. Just to say you are always better off trying to contact me via Patreon as you will get a quicker response in general I don’t always get the opportunity to check back here that much. Yeah I tend to do my nails myself and you should be able to do the same with a little care I don’t know if you can use anything to stop them from cracking. There is probably something if you have a look around. Also play around with the length I find my work best when relatively short. Sometimes I play with the flesh as opposed to the nail these are all things were a few experimenting with you have any more questions don’t hesitate to get back to me all the best
Happy New year Joe , and thanks , when you can , please explain the Everly bros . Walk right back , I have seen no way to play it so far .
It seems like there's a lot of elderly people learning how to play I'm 74 started when I was 65. I started off the late 60s playing blues harp came down with emphysema at 60 should have paid more attention guitar players in the band but I didn't but I did pick up some licks watching the guitar players, but it's good to know that I'm not the only senior playing late in life. I play Everyday at least 2 hours. But I played some open tuning in the band on certain songs.
Sounds like you are doing really well with the guitar playing. Thanks for taking the time to comment Harry. Just in case you are interested I have a patreon page where I have lots of exclusive blues lessons here www.patreon.com/joesguitarlessons
Hi Joe, I enjoy your lessons but was wondering how you learnt. I am more interested in the way of thinking than just copying people's videos. was you just trying to replicate what you were hearing, guitar lessons, books. I am assuming there was no youtube. Thanks T
Tons of information I'm halfway through and keep going back.
Great lesson you don't happen to teach in Illinois do you? Thanks
I’m afraid I don’t jack I’m based in the UK, I do have a Patreon site where I have quite a bit of exclusive material though if your interested www.patreon.com/joesguitarlessons
To be honest you would get as much from these lessons than you would having a private lesson.

JoesGuitar lessons awesome. Thx Joe
I just went to the web page for your turnaround and could not access without being a patreon. This is something I may do. I am very leary of the computer maybe you can you tell me where to find more info on your $10 or $25 it doesn't really tell me what I would get. Sorry if you can't help I understand
Hey Chris, Thanks for getting in touch. The different price points over on Patreon are more based on what people can afford. But whether you choose $5, $10 or $25 you get everything I have done. For $10 & $25 you also get your name credited on the selected videos as an associate producer. So it's more a question of what you can afford and how much support you want to give. I hope that helps.I should also point out that it is best to sign up at the beginning of the month as, you are charged at point of signing up and again at the beginning of the month, although this is made clear when you are signing up.
Dont hold back do more scales and order of scales to use
