Wath's up with all these self-proclaimed opera fans that apparently do not know that Verdi clashed with the management of the opera theater, in the première of La Traviata, PRECISELY because he wanted Traviata to be staged not as an escapism to modern life, but as a DEPICTION OF THEIR CONTEMPORARY REALITY. Yes, you may not like it from an aesthetic point of view, and many "updated" productions are indeed ridiculously unconvincing and unrealistic, but a 21st century Traviata set in a world exactly like that of the audience is precisely what Verdi wanted. He wanted people to see that that story had happened and would happen again in the very world where the audience members lived, it was not just some sad tragedy of the past. Pretty Yende's singing is amazing in legato and phrasing, and as for the production I won't comment much because I didn't see it. But please stop whining about this being a modern production. This is La Traviata, not Lucia di Lammermoor or Aida.
I do agree with you, but somehow I feel like the director could have done a better job by making it a little more simple... but that's just my opinion. Pretty Yende is so beautiful and her voice is so amazing. Love her
Excuse me... but, why do you think its neccesary to set the stage as if it was a 21st century story to make the public understand that this tragedies happen today? Every masterpiece is eternal because it appeals to the dephts of human soul. The stage doesnt make it "modern". In fact, if we followed that view to the end we should also change the text, as it wasn´t written as it would be today. I don´t want to dismiss all the modern productions... I have seen some good ones, but just in very few cases. Most of them are absolutely tasteless and disgraceful. And some people seems to forget that music is above all... I can´t stand the eagerness for prominence of many stage directors when it comes to Opera.
But that’s the entire point made by the side you’re against. “DEPICTION OF *THEIR (Verdi’s) CONTEMPORARY REALITY”. Verdi wasn’t fighting for modern aesthetic just for the sake of a modern aesthetic. He therefore would not want La Traviata staged with 2019 AESTHETICS just for aesthetics sake. We do not share the same societal morals and so updating the opera visually makes no sense. None to the plot, none to the poetry, none to the music, But thanks for proving our point.
Then set it in the Middle East because it’s sexist as fuck and incredibly disrespectful to women. It does not reflect 21st century western values or even emotions. It’s antiquated and imperialistic.
Oh wow what a VOICE! I just discovered Pretty Yende. What a talent! I really like that modern production too. Very original, it immediately caught my eyes.
I love this very emotional performance! Pretty Yende has not only a great vocal technique, but her acting is also exceptional, despite the somehow uninspired scenography. I hope we will see her in a more traditional setup as well.
Makes me want to go to the theater. Nice idea to portrait her memories with Alfredo like a picture of her happy times. 🥺 La Traviata is all about Violetta feeling things she never thought she could 😭🤧
Merveilleuse, incroyable cantatrice ! Ah, Paris ....
Very passionate rendition. The pathos of Violeta is clearly there and deeply understood by Miss Pretty. Great singing!!! Very pretty Miss Pretty...indeed!
It's sad that so few people (especially Americans) don't know that Traviata was shockingly modern and scandalous when it premiered in Paris - and that's what Verdi wanted. He told the story of a woman who had died only 6 YEARS BEFORE. People complained - as they're complaining over this production and used much of the same language. "Cheap, vulgar. No escapism." Opera must adjust to suit the times to have any relevance. I love traditional productions, but I also love bold, crazy productions - like this one. At least this production has people arguing about ideas, as Verdi would have wanted - instead of just commenting on the costumes.
Thank you for the education. As an American I didn't know the backstory but I think it's brilliant. I was shocked initially seeing the picture in the background but it certainly captures ones attention.
LaDivinaLover Art is not stale or in a jar, especially music and stage act. La Traviata was made 200 years ago. As a music form, it stands as it should, but as a spectacle, it needs to be updated. They did the things they did then because it was a product of their time. Your bourgeois and narrow-minded viewpoint is one of the reasons only 85 year-olds go to opera today.
@@LaDivinaLover Plus if you can't find new meanings and new interpretations, that means that the work has already given what it has. So congratulations, you just made every work of art meaningless, because you only have one interpretation.
Bravo BRAVO
Opera doesn't always have to be performed by oversized people in dusty old costumes. This was a refreshing contemporary presentation that breathed life into La Travita with youth, passion & a beautiful woman with a mesmerizing voice.
Whether you prefer modern or traditional settings, Yende's performance should help you not to care. The art of opera is timeless, so which time period it takes place in is arbitrary. Composers have never adhered to tradition, which makes it ironic that it's fans insist so heavily on it.
The composers of the 19th century had a common sense expectation that opera is, by definition, a play that is sung. They wrote music to the libretto, in the same way a modern day composer writes music for a movie soundtrack. The setting of the story, time period, etc. all influenced the composers' music. Having said that, I do believe the composers would like various creativity. This presentation of this aria, presented here by wonderful Pretty Yende, is tasteful and true to the essence of the opera. The problem that we, the audience has, is that opera, the way it was intended, ie a play that is sung, is being suffocated nearly out of existence by productions that ignore nearly every aspect if the literary source, which is also an important part of the opera experience.
¡BRAVA!
Exquisite. Emotional. Relatable. While Opera knows it can't suit everyone, it has to pack the house, pay the bills and get an even bigger audience. Why should Opera escape the occasional modern adaptation? Keep bridging the divide, Pretty Yende. Keep defying the naysayers!
Very violent emotions of intensity similar to those that Mary arouses. Straight tips in the middle of the beautiful. In the heart of emotions. And how much immense beauty. What a supreme voice. What a wonderful new theater at last. Beautiful beautiful. God bless you happy creature immense beauty. I never thought that at my age I would try again what I felt so many years ago. Thank you for that. I thought there would be nothing left afterwards. Instead a star of immense light was born .. I rely on emotion. When I saw you and heard you I started crying with a thousand heart. And I’m not at the End of cryng
She also wouldn't have been able to have her own credit card, work in business, AND there would be no people of color onstage or in the audience. Times change thank goodness.

Ms. Yende as progressed extremely well vocally and in her career. This performance lovely and vocally so pleasing.
