- Visit to the Lofoten Islands in Norway and shortstop in Tormso. Stayed in the Thon Hotel in Svolvaer. Svolvaer is the 143 most northern city in the world. Tormso is the 47th most northern city and Fairbanks, Alaska is 410th most northern city. On this late November visit the sunrise in Lofoten was 10:30 and sunset at 1:30. In Tormso, the sun did not rise above the horizon.
Svolvaer industry is 40% tourism, 25% fishing and a few others. This visit was to exprience the northern lights which can be seen in another video.
To get to Lofoten required a flight from Frankfurt to Oslo, Oslo to Bodo and Bodo to Svolvaer. The last leg was 30 minutes but Bodo was free of precipitation. However, across the Norweigan sea in Svolvear it was snow, ice and wind. All the cars had studded tires for this reason.
Svolvaer was built by blasting the mountains and put the fill into the sea. It was only in the 1970s that much of Svolvaer including the town square was part of the sea.
The Norwegian people here were extremely friendly and we learned much about this area from friendly locals that were happy to share.
