Saddens me to see the aftermath of that tornado 2 months later. I cannot begin to imagine how hard it must be for those who went through it. I'm 74 years old and I know how difficult it is for me to do what I used to do with no difficulty now. But starting over is well beyond what I can grasp at any age let alone elderly or disabled persons starting over. Pray that God blesses Sulfur as richly as it was destroyed and that it comes back even better than it was.

In 2016 our entire Parish, along with many other Parishes, were flooded. One normal size river had increased by 25 miles wide. And that was just one. Lots of other rivers and bayous fed into, or out of that river. And you can still drive around and see homes that have not been touched. Our Daughter in Law’s father died last year from mold that was hidden inside the home. Not only did everyone lose just about everything that they owned, there were people going around ripping off families, saying they would do the work to rebuild, but took the money and ran. I had just finished treatments for breast cancer, the month before, and I had to learn how to do things that I had never done before. It took 2 years of working every day. My husband worked at a plant, and would come work about an hour, then go work 12 hours, then come back and work well into the night. He slept very little. It was so hard. So I know what those people are going through. I pray for everyone that was involved in helping to clean up and rebuild. So to drive around and see homes still in ruins after this long is hard to see.

That shock never leave, I'm a 65+ yr old woman that went thru tornado in 1965 in Minnesota. My Auntie and Uncle's house was the only thing left standing for blocks. They slept 40+ people in their basement for the first night including me. The state locked down the entire community for days. No person could come in if your driver's license said that you didn't live the community. You had no business being there. You couldn't walk in or drive in. My dad tried many times to come get me. Finally my uncle walked me out to the border crossing and my dad was there to take me home.
For many years just the tv saying there was tornado watch up would put me in the basement for the day. That is what terror is. My highschool graduation was held under tornado watch and was in gymnasium I sat as close to girls locker room just in case. I'm better now then when I was younger.

A lot of historic buildings and homes destroyed but the Spirit of the people is more powerful than any brick and mortar building. It took a couple of years to get back to normal and I’m sure your hometown will be the same. Sulpher Strong my friend.

It took Joplin MO how long to rebuild after the tornado in 2011. But from the looks like it the town is getting cleaner and one day it will be just back to normal. Good luck with all the rebuilding and getting back to normal. Hope this can just be a past reminder as time goes on and life moves forward.❤❤❤

I have a niece who lives in Sulphur about three or four blocks from where the tornado hit.She only lost a tree and was in the storm shelter when it hit.She likes to jog and a few days after the storm went running. She said when she came into the area hit by the storm, she had to stop and cry. While she was stopped someone came to her and ask if she wanted something to eat or drink. She has only lived in Sulphur for just over a year, moved there to retire. She likes Sulphur a lot but was still shocked of the kindness of the people.

    • @Doxymeister
      @Doxymeister 3 місяці тому +5

Gosh, I'm sorry this happened right after she moved here--I've been here since my boys were entering junior high, so late 80's, and this is the first direct hit our town has taken since I've been here. And the kindness of the locals is one of the things that drew me here to begin with. We had lived in Midwest City, a suburb of Oklahoma City, and gangs had become such a problem in the area that I was truly worried for our safety. My folks had recently bought a place in the Sulphur area, and we visited every month, especially at the holidays. I had been struck at how kind everyone was, everybody waved at you when you drove by even if they didn't know you, so we moved here.
And they're still like that. During the pandemic, I became almost a hermit and my children lived elsewhere, so I got in the habit of driving over to the SnakShak every night. I tried to buy something each time but mostly it was just to visit with another human being. They didn't care, they smiled and talked to me just like we were related. LOL, sorry to babble, I'm just glad your daughter retired here, it's a good place and these are good people.

No, it does not. We literally lost everything to Ian. Had to relocate up to Ocala, far inland, and away from water. 2 of my sister's live in Greenfeild Iowa and I was texting then as I was watching RYAN HALL the same time they were. They missed getting hit by 4 blocks. I've worked in that town for 5 years. I went the next day and could not find my way around. All the land marks were wiped out. Over 380 homes and businesses are wiped out. Literally evaporated. I had just watched what you all went thru and learned a lot from you. People think tornados are so cool, until they are not. 4 people died in town, another on the highway. I think almost 40 injuries and a boat load of God's blessings.

On April 27, 2011 an F5 tornado hit Tuscaloosa. It was such a shock and it still is today. We have rebuilt, but things are all changed. I sometimes feel lost in parts of Tuscaloosa because it looks so different now.

One of the best things they can do is install berms around the houses to deflect the wind. These flimsy stick-frame houses are just matchsticks in the face of a tornado. If you have the house torn up do some retrofitting with some wind straps from the walls to the roof trusses. I have metal rods that run from the foundation to the roof every 4 feet all around the house. Have narrow soffits around the house so the winds have less to grab onto. If you have the chance, install deep pile hook points. If a tornado is coming you can toss the wires over the house and ratchet them down. My house has layered shutters I can set in place quick. 2 hook points on the top and then lower over the window. Lag bolts get screwed down to lock them off.
I would do a survey of the town using an aerial map and plot the damage of the tornado coming through. Perhaps some neighborhood storm shelters might be in order. We built one under the new wing of our elementary school near us. It's fully underground and will hold the whole school plus a lot more folks. One idea to consider is a place to drive your car into that is concrete and like a bermed garage. You can pull in with your car and be safe.
The other thing you can do is work with the utility company to have an auto shutoff of gas, electric and water from the central hub so it eliminates a zap, boom, and flood potential.
I have no idea why house A is destroyed but house B is untouched. I have seen amazing things during cleanups. China on the wall of a destroyed house untouched is an example. Small-town folks come together in an emergency and have the biggest hearts of anyone I know.

This past Saturday an EF2 hit the town of Janesville WI where my Brother and Aunt and Uncle live. They are ok. My brother heard the humming sound of the tornado and he was only .7 miles from it. I will be heading up North in July
A Pheasant Farm was destroyed and about 4,000 Pheasant escaped. They are not allowed to capture them, there are tons of Pheasant out there roaming around.

I’m in Britain and thank the Lord we don’t have tornados…we have major flooding in a lot of places most every year but to go through what your lovely town went through is unimaginable… to lose ther businesses …ther livelihood…the ability to feed your family is just awful and will take a lot to rebuild and start again… the people who have lost ther homes wer do they go if they don’t have family…it’s heartbreaking…the Chicksaw Nation are building Eddy and Steph’s house arnt they…that’s amazing that they are going to raise all that money to help people…and they are known to do what they say they will do…
Yes very strong people to live through a tornado like that and survive… no we are not bored…we love you both dearly … he did say it didn’t he… god bless him ❤

My family owned a furniture store there in Sulfur, I'm not sure yet if they are going to rebuild or not. I live not to far from there in Ada, and the winds this night was crazy. And we lived through the tornado that took out almost every 12 years ago in Tushka..crazy how my whole family still loves our state!!

David from Fayetteville. Sorry about everyone's loss. Have been watching shows about farmers and cattle ranchers up north. They are having bumper crops on hay but soybeans and corn have been a washout. Unbelievable rain. Fields flooded . Rivers flooded and its all pouring into the Mississippi River. Watch out Southeast Arkansas!

The downtown loss is so sad. Those types of buildings simply don't get built anymore. Too expensive and no one even knows how to do it anymore. Maybe they get rebuilt but they will end up looking like wooden boxes at best.
