Excellent review showcasing both the positives and negatives of the 16X. It's good to get the perspective of someone who does "normal" riding, in addition of the upcoming trails and torture testing Marty will contribute, and the edge-of-sanity riding that is Chooch's forte.
I’m glad to hear what you had to say. I have a 16X on the way. It’s my first wheel, I’ve never even touched one or seen one up close before. But I’m convinced I chose the right wheel. Thanks.
Duf thanks. Yeah I got a bodyguard from Roll.NZ on the way too. Myself? I’m pretty well padded around the mid section, but I might need knee, elbow, wrist and head protection 😁
Good logic. X=torque + maneuverability, while Nikola= speed cruiser. Each winner in their respective category. Thanks for the review, Duf. Pretty impartial judgement. X then is winner in my realm.
For me, the decision between the Nikola(+) and the 16X came down to being able to ride the "finished product" this summer or not. I had no doubts that the 16X would end up being great, but it seemed like the refinement process was taking a while, which would mean my riding season would be over before it was done with the firmware iterations and debugging, along with the shipping delays while KS figured things out. The other downside was dealing with the app, the speed unlock process, and of course, the throttling. With the Nikola (specifically the 100V version), it seemed like all the (important) bugs had already been worked out. Connect the app once, turn off the alarms and tiltback, and then just ride, knowing I'll likely never hear a beep out of it because I rarely exceed 30mph. As for the 18L, if it had the range of the 16X or Nikola+ and I could stop it beeping at me like the Nikola, it'd probably still be my ideal wheel. Longer, flowing corners on it still feel better to me on the 18L than they do on the Nikola. The Nikola wants to fight me to take the line I want it to take, it either wants to turn too sharp, or not at all. I will be trying a new tire to see if I can change that behavior.
HOW THE HECK do you unlock the speed on the 16X? Ug. I've tried every version of their app and some you can't register with phone and then if you register with email you can't login without phone... so irritating. Let me know if you have the solution.
Love your reviews Duf, and was waiting for this one in particular, as I am contemplating purchasing a 16X. Some feedback, or a few things I like about your reviews in particular... you give a wheel it's due diligence (miles/time) before rendering your final thoughts, you do a good job of pointing out your own preferences and therefore any of your observations that might be deemed even slightly "subjective" when rendering your opinion, and last but not least, as with your off-road observations, or lack thereof... if you haven't done the testing you don't render an opinion... and in this case, will even defer to another reviewer that might have a more informed opinion of a certain riding characteristic. Bottom line... thanks for your pragmatic and honest opinions.
@@Duf No sweat... I've noted that if you put yourself "out there" as a content provider or "influencer", there is sometimes no end to the nit picking and critical feedback. I agree the 16x is better for most riders, you didn't even mention that it is significantly cheaper than the Nicola. I have heard from multiple people that the speakers are also better on the Kingsong so yours might of gotten covered when you took it apart. Thanks for the review!
You are right, the 84V Nikola is the same price range but the plus is roughly $500 more, I should have brought that up. The 16X also has a legit mudguard!
Great review duf!! I appreciate the honesty, seeing that you basically just got the 100V Nikola and still said you'd get the 16X. Maybe you don't need 15 wheels, but just 1 more :)
Great review. I've had a 16x since release and I adore it. What did you think of the carving characteristics at speed vs. the Nikola+? There's a lot of chatter on the forums about the tire profile and how the (shipping) stock 16x tire is relatively square affecting carve quality.
Nice one Duf another great point of view was looking forward to this, but I had already got my new 16x 3 days ago, glad I never got up to 18 inch wheels always a fan of 16 like my ks 16s great wheel, the gotway brand I just could never buy one there quality issues have always been enough for me to stay away, but I was tempted by Nikola plus only cos it looks nice and love the led's but glad I came to my senses and didn't get it , sticking to Kingsong who care about quality over top speed and doggy mosfits and burning/overheating wires, what a nightmare, so leave that stress to the lucky gotway owners. cheers ing-eeeeee
between the 18xl and the nikola i definitely prefer the 18xl in all regards.. the nikola is unnecessarily bulky and just awkward in comparison.. however it was much more snappy than the 18xl.. i do heavily prefer the 2.5" wide tire of the 18 though much more nimble a 3" tire is too stable... definitely interested in trying out the 16x though
Hi and congratulation for making such great videos from a french viewer. I’m considering an upgrade for my V10F which i use most of the time for my urban commute to work. Duf another vert important point, i weight 240lbs for 6’1, and your little « lecture » about kingsong firmware safety modification talked to me as well :). (I like the speed, but most of all, i want to trust my wheel even with my heavy body)
@@Duf Do you know how long you will be experience speeds around the max speed (50km/h) ou let's say 45km/h) in 16-x until it start to decresce the speed because you have less battery..? When i brought my wheel a z6, i had look to the max speed and it fit's, but I am only a very small time around that max speed... it start to beep and decrease the speed so soon. So for a new wheel, I am almost ignoring the max speed, but pointing to some km/h below during a significative amount of time.. When i think about 50 ou 45km/h I would expect some time on that speeds naturally without a decrease of speed. I expected that for a wheel like Nikola plus 100v 1800wh... not sure how the 16-x behaves.. My idea is to grant a speed like 45 to 50km a significative amount of time... that would positioning me at the traffic speed in the city to deal with them naturally. What you already know about this?
@@mariotomas6571 I believe the throttling starts around 50% battery but it is not a huge throttle. In my long ride after 65km I was still able to ride about 29kmh with 30% battery remaining. Like I said in the video, I expect KingSong to continue to adjust these numbers.
16x is more off road capable than the nikola. Its tougher and can handle dirt and water better. I was stuck between the two, but the quicker acceleration, off road ability was my deciding factor in wanting 16x
Good review, my take is that there weren’t any negatives that were salient for any of the wheels you reviewed. If this is the case, does the decision ride on the rider’s preference, I.e. governed v. unrestricted speed, lights, or audio quality? My other question is on the performance aspect. Is there a minuscule or gargantuan margin between the wheels for performance?
Thanks for all the great info. This is super helpful. As a tall guy, do you have any issues with a smaller wheel like the 16x? I was thinking about going with the 18xl for my first wheel, but now you got me thinking the 16x might be a better choice both in terms of torque and nimbleness. I've been steering away from the 16" wheels just because I'm tall too (6'7"). Does height matter at all when it comes to EUC's?
I found my Nikola plus was too prone to speed wobbles. Too top heavy. Got rid of it. Just speaking for me as a lot of people love that wheel. I saw Marty speed wobble off his Nikola as well though. I also find I that the 16 inch wheels even with wider tires do not take bumps as well as 18 inch wheels. My 18xl is great. 16x is sexier looking though but no thanks to 16 wheels going forward for me sans suspension,.
I ever had an issue with wobbles on my Nikola BUT I keep my tire pressure in the high 20s for that very reason. On multiple wheels higher pressure has meant more speed wobbles for me.
@@Duf Ya the tire pressure for sure played a role. After I fell off my Nik at a high rate of speed due to wobble I never trusted it again. Man though the wheel held together well. Well built case on the Nik
